I think the Sega Genesis Golden Axe is better than the arcade too.
Similar to this game, hit detection improved and "weight" added so it feels like you've hitting something.
Plus it had an extra level.

I loved the snes version but have come to appreciate the smoother animation details in thr arcade version. The snes version lost a lot of animation in the port which is very noticable coming off playing the snes version. One problem with emulating the arcade version is not being able to pick a turtle since its based on the first player port being used. You can get around it but its anoying

There is a ROM of the 2 player cabinet out there. It lets you select any of the 4 turtles no matter which joystick you're using. Most 4 player games that have a dedicated joystick per character have a 2 player variant that lets you do this. The first TMNT, The Simpsons, Gauntlet etc.

Arcade version is more nostalgic but for me the winner is hands down the SNES version. Tighter gameplay, more interesting bosses, and you can tell the game was redesigned for a more fulfilling console experience rather than sucking the quarters out of your pocket. The arcade version is straight up one of the most unfair and punishing arcade beat-em-ups out there that does not want you to get better. If you somehow survive a stage for 5 minutes without dying, it suddenly drops an instant-death bomb right on your head that is unavoidable unless you react with a move that gives you i-frames. It was probably designed as a measure to get back to the attract mode if the player walks away from the machine, but some of those stages are longer than 5 minutes so it ends up punishing anyone going for a 1 credit clear.
There's also the Genesis version (Hyperstone Heist) which is rarely mentioned. It's not quite as good as the SNES version but it's worth playing as it has an exclusive stage and a bunch of other differences.

Fun fact, the throwing foot soldiers into the screen thing was actually not a Mode 7 effect. Common misconception that I just found out about the other day.
I forget who explains it, but there's a UA-cam channel that did a video on mode 7 effects in games that aren't actually mode 7.

The arcade game has slightly better graphics and animation, fuller sounding music from that Yamaha 2151 FM chip, more voice samples and sprite scaling. The SNES has more precise gameplay and those mode 7 stages but man this port is one of the first games I would rather play at home than at the arcade. It doesn't just feel like it wants you to keep feeding it quarters and actually gives you a chance to get through the game. Only thing I miss is that pizza power song in the intro from their coming out of our shells tour, i would watch the attract mode over and over just to hear that clip!

'Pizza Power, oh that's what makes us feel alright.' Turtles in Time is such an amazingly fun game. The choice between the arcade and SNES ports is a difficult one. I think the most fun to be had is with 4 players in this game, so choosing the arcade is a no-brainer if you have more than 1 friend (or arcade strangers) to play with. But, if it's just a solo affair or just you and one friend, well, the choice is extremely more difficult. I know a lot of fans prefer the SNES sound, but, me, I've always preferred the arcade soundtrack. The SNES music is great too, and in some ways better in ; however, I just prefer the arcade music. Otherwise, though, for 1 to 2 players, I'd go right with the SNES port. Or...if you want the best of both worlds, grab the MSU-1 hack with the arcade soundtrack (though it's not mixed in terms of balance maybe as well as it could be). So...this is an amazing game that everyone who enjoys side/belt-scrolling beat-em-ups should play in both incarnations, and, even if you are not a fan of the genre, maybe at least listen to the OST of the arcade and SNES versions of Turtles in Time and even Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis (and definitely listen to the soundtrack of TMNT III: The Manhattan Project too, since Konami just knocked it out of the park with that music). Fans of fun games should play it in this order to best appreciate the differences: 1. arcade, 2. SNES, 3. Hyperstone Heist, 4. SNES with MSU-1 patch. Of course, everyone should play the original '89 TMNT arcade game as well and the NES port of that (should have got a Genesis port as well, IMO...haven't seen anything of Master Linkuei's Genesis homebrew in years, but the Master System homebrew from xfixium is looking amazing for the system). As much as I love Turtles in Time (+The Arcade Game, Shredder's Revenge, and Hyperstone Heist, my favorite TMNT beat-em-up remains TMNT 3 on the NES.

While the SNES music isn't bad, I think the arcade music is much better. There are just certain elements of the SNES soundtrack that bother me, like how choppy the instrumentation is and the heavy use of orchestra hits. The arcade's FM sound is much smoother and matches the action better. I think it was this game that got me interested in taking a look at the MSU-1 hacks. Being able to play the SNES version of the game with the arcade music is a wonderful thing.

Hard to explain, but it feels punchier and more connective, the arcade version feels a bit mushy and less effective for lack of a better term lol. Only got to play the arcade version a few times as a kid, but I remember being more impressed with its version of the future stage, since it had the nice graphic of the buildings showing between the gaps in the road, plus more standard gameplay, whereas the SNES version felt like a drawn-out bonus stage with worse-than-F-Zero graphics

During that fleeting pre teen to mid teen time- I remember seeing a Turtles in Time machine as a 14 year old only one time on vacation, and not being able to pickup (afford) someone else's progress during the continue screen. I never saw an arcade in PA with a Turtles in Time Machine..despite seeing the OG TMNT machine everywhere between 1989 to 1993. Then knowing about the SNES version, and not being able to play it because I had a Genesis. Renting the Hypertone heist for Genesis and not appreciating it and still not understanding gameplay patterns (which are critical in TMNT arcade games). Then waiting until 1998 as a college freshman for MAME and SNES emulators to be only somewhat capable of playing TMNT Turtles in Time...while being more interested in other things like girls and beer and having to do well in school. When the game finally could play on an emulator, on a Pentium 2, it still had problems where layers would flicker on and off. So you got most of the game, but not all of it.
I played Turtles in Time for SNES (and Karate Kid for NES) the day before my daughter was born...before speeding my wife to the hospital when it was time. Turtles in Time is one of those really important games to me.

Here's the thing, both versions do not play "exactly the same". The snes version is better, not just because it has better boss fights and more content, it plays better. If you go into the options, you can turn on an option for controlling when you run. In the arcade version you only run after walking for a set amount of time.
In the snes version, you can also control when you do the throw and ground slam. In the arcade version, these moves are random. Yes, the arcade version has more character animation, but the snes version has better gameplay.

Both are excellent, I'm a little more partial to the SNES version due to the extras and how impressive of a conversion it was for the time especially when you consider this was released only a couple years after the NES port of the original game which really demonstrated how much of a powerhouse the SNES was, yes the graphics and the music were better in the arcade but not by much, however the one thing I like more in the arcade version is just the pacing of the game it just flows a little quicker for me.
Both versions are included within the Cowabunga Collection and I recommend playing both you can't go wrong with either.

  • @ImmortalGodEmperor

I would pick the SNES version. More than the extra levels and bosses, the actual controls just feel better and more responsive. If you can throw the foot soldiers into the screen intentionally in the arcade version, I haven't figured out how to, it feels random. The Shredder fight wouldn't work on arcade because of that.
The ideal version of this game would be a merging of the two, the SNES's tighter controls and extra content with the arcade's superior graphics and sound. Kinda surprised no one has taken a crack at that fangame wise.

  • @ravagingwolverine666
    @ravagingwolverine666 Місяць тому

I agree with your conclusion that both games are different enough and good enough to both be worth playing. Many of the changes for the SNES version make a lot of sense as far as stage progression or help the presentation and gameplay. Of course, the first Shredder fight is very clever. It uses three background tile layers to make that happen. The actual background, Shredder in the foreground, and the fake scaling of the Foot Soldiers are all using background layers. And rearranging the game gets more bosses in. Bebop isn't even in the arcade, but putting him and Rocksteady on the pirate ship was a great move for the SNES game.
SNES has other good changes. Auto run is optional. I initially hated the auto run in the arcade, so the option is very nice. I've since gotten used to it. For the home port, the two throws can be done reliably on demand and Konami incorporated that into the scoring system which matters for getting extends(3 points for screen toss, 2 points for side slam, 1 point otherwise). The turtles have much greater differences in the home version. Raphael is much faster but much weaker for the home port. Michaelangelo is the tank. I also like the way they made the hits feel in the SNES version. When you hit Foot Soldiers in the arcade, they flail about. In the SNES, they look properly stunned. That and the different sound effect make it feel like the impacts land harder. I also think they made the timing easier for the, I believe, four different jumping attacks.
With that said, the arcade is a technical marvel. While the SNES does a nice job replicating the graphics, the arcade's animation is excellent. I also like the concrete monster in the prehistoric level. He's pretty easy, so that helps. I also strongly prefer the arcade music over the arranged SNES soundtrack. The SNES music isn't bad, but it was never to my taste and I think the arcade is way better that way. I also like Neon Night Riders better as a regular scrolling stage in the arcade as opposed to a Mode 7 bonus stage.

Added 4p, enhanced MSX music, added animation frames, enhanced colors. Call it the Gnarly Edition or something
With all these enhanced ports I’m seeing with the Sega Genesis like Mortal Kombat Arcade edition and Final Fight MD, I think it’s time to see SNES games get that kinda love.

I don't think they are using mode 7 for the screen throws but loading in different sprites. (I think mode 7 only works on background layers, and getting the throw to be a background layer would be too much of a sacrifice for the actual backgrounds. +No actual sprite scaling and rotation in the SNES afaiK)
It was an impressive port, for sure! Turtles in Time, Castlevania IV, and Super Ghouls n Ghosts really stick out as big early bangers for the SNES.

    • @ravagingwolverine666

You are correct. The Foot Soldiers thrown at the screen are a fake-scaling effect which was done to some degree on all the various major consoles(usually to scale down rather than up). It's clear in motion that the Foot Soldiers don't scale smoothly on the SNES, but in distinct steps, but it happens fast enough that it looks reasonably good. Though I call it fake scaling, it's a good effect under the circumstances. What's going on is that the game uses a video mode that allows a third background tile layer for the Foot Soldier toss so as not to have to deal with any horizontal sprite limits, and it redraws the tiles larger in sequence. One way to tell in game that it's using the third background layer for the toss is in stage one when giant Krang shows up. At that point you have the far background, the foreground, and Krang all being displayed as background layers which makes it impossible to do the screen toss until the segment with Krang is over. No matter what, the only throw the game allows during that part is the slide slams.

Play the super nes version semi reguarly. The last time I played the arcade was the collection release 2 years ago, and before that, when mame came along on the wii and I thought it would be fun to try it on the crt. As good as the arcade is, it’s not very well balanced being a coin eater. Even on hardest, the super nes version is wonderfully balanced and fair at all times.

SNES has much tighter controls and fewer but more powerful enemies who require a full combo to be killed. Arcade version has slippery controls, hits feel weaker, the moves are random, combos don't connect as well and it's too chaotic.
    SNES wins.

  • @Lastjustice

I'm taking the SNES version, as the overall better package beats out slightly better graphics. The graphics aren't better by enough to justify all the content you'd lose. Obviously in the Cowabunga collection you get to play both, but the Snes version always felt like a more complete game and is my favorite of the two.

The only aspect in which the arcade version is better is the graphics. And not by much. The arcade gameplay is really unfair with stupid mechanics to take your quarters. The snes version is more fun, fair and balanced. It also has more content, levels, bosses and story. You can finish it in 1 credit without problems and enjoy it, the arcade is impossible, almost a nightmare, most people don't try to play the game seriously to understand its mechanics, they just spam credits.

I personnely prefer the ARCADE version just because I played the game in the arcade on release in 1991 before even owning a SNES, so I always prefered the arcade aesthetic and art design, I love the way minions vanish in an upward light show, it seems when you kill a minion, that he's going back to his timeline, while in the SNES version they simply explode within a few frames, it looks cheaper. But thats my opinion. Of course I do love the SNES version as well because it is so closed to the arcade and yes its a longer ride and they simply improved the arcade version but with some system limitation unfortunately, otherwise the SNES version is a clear winner as far as gametime is concerned. Like you said JUST PLAY BOTH VERSIONS !!!! The arcade 1st and the snes version 2nd, and you get it all !
