Free Hand Peening with a Flat Anvil | Eastern European Method of Peening with Snath Attached

- Professional sctyhe mower Janne show us a method of peening with the snath attached to the blade, used in Eastern Europe. With this free hand method, you can lie down in the field and peen on site, which of course has its benefits.
When peening a scythe, you would usually remove the blade from the snath and peen it with a peening jig fastened on top of a log that you sit in front of on a chair. You can learn all about that in this video:

You can't hit it too wrong if you bring the edge of the blade to the near edge of the anvil. Aim to almost miss the anvil. Then you will hit right on the edge of the blade, or glance off the anvil. You can also fix the warped blade, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
If you are not skilled with a hammer you can ! Even if the edge is close you can still hitt further up. I guess you have never done this because when working with peening this way it is natural to place the bevel somewhere on top of the anvil for best control. It would be very annoying to completely slide off and miss the anvil every now and then.

@@slattergubben6702 haven't done it with the scythe blade yet, no. Almost ten years experience as a blacksmith though so my hammer control is reasonable. Scythe skills, zero. I got hold of one to get a bit of healthy movement into my back.
