- As a scything teacher, I have seen a lot of mistakes that many beginners do when they are learning scythe mowing. And I see some more experienced scythe mowers do them as well! It's not the end of the world, of course, but a good technique will make scythe mowing a lot mor fun, enjoyable and efficient. So here's me demonstrating some mistakes that you'll want to avoid... all in good fun! :)
Which mistakes are you making?
Please share in the comments if you could relate to any of these! :D

I've been scything for about 20 years. I began with no knowledge, since there were no computer videos to teach how it is done. I made all these mistakes, of course! But after injuring myself with muscle strain (and one unfortunate cut on my hand from swatting at a mosquito) I slowly found that my body could tell me the easiest motion, and my field could tell me how to level the blade and make a fair swath. I hope anyone who is taking up scything will learn the best way -from you!
Cheers from Cantabria, northern Spain. Here everybody seem to be an "expert" when they see me handling the scythe, but nobody is eager to show how much of an expert they are when I tell them "ok, show me". I am a fan of yours now, and my technique has improved very much. I just need to get the blade properly sharpened!
I've never done any of these mistakes ever in my life, but I hope one day to try scything. 😋
I learned from you that the scythe handle was set too short for me, I am 198cm tall and I had to lean in order to cut, very tiring. So just wanted to say thank you.
I keep coming back to your technique videos to ensure I am mowing correctly. I have never had as much enjoyment mowing as I do now with a scythe. I owe you many thanks for helping me climb the learning curve faster than would have alone. 😁✌
Thanks! Glad to hear! Do you also film yourself? I am looking for films on different persons that I can evaluate and give advice to for another official video ;)
@@slattergubben6702 I will get my better half to film me the next time I mow. I did this early on by propping my phone against a rock on a table, but I deleted that one. It may be a while as I cut our lawn a few days ago and it is growing slowly between feedings. I will upload to my own channel and send you a link. ✌
in Romania scythe is still popular , it is relaxing watching you cutting grass , you should try more difficult terrains that is where you show your skill
I would perhaps add : Forgetting to breathe / adopting a too quick pace. Especially when suddenly encountering a technically more challenging spot that requires more attention, that will make you alter your rythm and that will likely ask for swifter strokes, at least I have noticed that I tend to hold my breath. Don't commit this error for too long / too often or you will get exhausted without understanding why and then put the blame on poor technique or gear, or simply say that the grass stand/terrain was a difficult one !
That's one more! Another film with six more is to come!
EXCELLENT video! I like your teaching style. I learned a lot! Thank you for sharing your gifts
Thank you so much
Yup! Pretty sure I do all of them! Good idea about filming yourself! Never thought of that! I have 10acres here to cut fir hay! So I will be practicing quite alot over the next month! Thank you for all your help!
I've just begun to scythe, maybe 7 or 8 strokes just to get a "feel" for it, and haven't analyzed my style just yet. I am using an old tool I bought at a property sale, and have successfully learned how to sharpen my blade.
Haha... not sure if it was a mistake, but I cheaped out and bought an antique American style scythe instead of one of the new-made European designs. It's a heavy mother, and uses a somewhat different method than this. I was lucky that there was a sharpening service right in this town, else I don't think I could have managed that myself. My yard is also lumpy and uneven, full of dips and knots, and goes up an incline (it was woodland that the former owners had cleared, now chock full of pokeweed, virginia creeper, and rotting logs). This thing is a workout to use, but that's exactly why I bought it! 😀
Great! If you want to upgrade please look in our webshop www.slattergubben.se
Thank you for this Video.👍
It helps me to do this better.
I do a combination of all of these 😂. I'm getting there. But yeah, filming myself feels dumb, but its been helpful.
I need to find my old record of Yugoslavian Folk Music to help me swing!!
My first "proper" Austrian sycthe just arrived today. You started my sycthe inspiration to mow my meadow. Thank you!
Can you put a link to where you bought the scythe?
@@Bonniebrubeckjeter ScytheCymru type that into Google 🙏👏🥰
Nice one, Jan! I have not checked your channel for a long time, but you got me scything 5+ years ago(in Swedish!). Been loving it ever since!Great rejuvenated channel!
Thanks!
Over four years ago i done a week long scything course .Since than iv done very little & this W/E iv been trying to scythe my lawn ,which hasnt been mowed since last october. I think that i must have made at least some of those mistakes .
I have a whole playlist of scything tutorials that you could watch, if you want to freshen up your technique :)
I find scything so interesting, pure poetry.
A good description!
❤🎉 yes exactly 🎉❤
Definitely have a tendency to end up only mowing a quarter of a circle. I think I need to pay more attention to my placing when I start a new row.
nice, thanks.
pretty much all of them =D
Its a pretty big process of learning how to use a scythe. thanks for your videos =)
Maybe som day i will come to sweden and take one of your courses. =)
You are very welcome!
Great information. Thank you for this fantastic video.
A big thanks for the advice. i will need it to retry mowing XD
The problem I'm having is that I'm not mowing grass, I'm using a weed blade on tall lambsquarter, canada thistlepigweed, velvetleaf, and others. So pretty much every stroke, I get a pile of big weeds stuck on other weeds or piling up on the scythe blade and not coming off. It would help to see how Janne handles fields like that!
I would say right tecnice and sharp scythe is a good start. Not mow gras into gras and not take so wide strokes.
Awesome video, thanks, :)
Thank you and you're welcome! :)
Could you do a video on typical meadow management, starting with a field that has been neglected for awhile? (lots of thick grass, needs a couple of seasons to get back to a wildflower meadow. I know part of my struggles are from being inexperienced, but I think part of it has to be due to thick uneven grass in a field bumpy from moles, etc. Do I need to tough it out for a couple of seasons and remove thatch and smooth out rough terrain before it gets easier? I really appreciate your videos.
Perhaps. Best is to start with burning such an area in spring and then you also see garbage, tussocks, stones, saplings which you then can remove before the grass starts growing. Else it is just start working - it will just be better and better over the years. Mow and remove the grass each year!
@@slattergubben6702 Any tips on controlled burning of a field?
Bravo ViKING.....
I think I’ve been biting off more than I can chew! Thanks!
I hate the algorithm. I was SUGGESTED one video of a woman cutting a lawn with a scythe, which was interesting to see how it's done, and now i dont care. But UA-cam seems to believe i have discovered a new love for scythe mowing and i apparently can't wait to get started? Fuck off, UA-cam .
I'm very happy to have you here though ;)
vilken jävla video Janne! grym
Thanks again for the video! Mistake #6 is definitely one I make.
Is there any chance you will make a video on how to make a Nordic scythe in Ash wood?
No, I won't share this after all years experimenting. As they come out more widespread it is of course free to look and take measurements and replicate after your own mind!
I can relate to all of these lol
I've mowed a 17×8m allotment with uneven ground a few times and it felt good, but trying to mow our garden at home with much more even/flat ground I'm finding a lot harder, and I think my problem is my setup but I don't know what. I keep digging the tip into the ground and find it difficult to cut the grass short enough.
Setup, technique and sharpness. There is videos for all on my channel. Start with the setup one here, can be you also have a too flat blade but it is also covered in the video. Keep on! You will improve!ua-cam.com/video/9tgZ7-OAcGg/v-deo.htmlsi=EB9VxwsnUPlYlhlq
Great video! I'm really keen in starting to mow with a scythe after watching your content. One off topic question, what are the shoes that you are wearing?
Feelmax from Finland. Very durable and nice barefoot winter shoe.
@@slattergubben6702 Thank you!
What type of blade would you recommend for thicker plants
I use my normal blade, but with cutting motion and sharpness and style. Else use an ax or blade hoe for sapplings.
Jävla sheriff!
I think I am doing all of the mistakes 😬
That's ok! Now that you're aware of them, you can start to fix them :)
Nice wool sweather were did you get it?
Thank you! Probably a second hand store somewhere, I don't remember
I noticed that your bottom handle makes you pull your tool.
I have my bottom handle in the the other way, so I push it. Very interesting, I wonder what is the best way.
Hope you understand what I mean....
The bottom handle at a Nordic gives you possibilities to push it even with a totally open hand throughout the stroke. No other snath gives you that.
And the upper handle ease pulling back.
Mistake # 7- Not having a Scythe. This looks to be good for getting Sun and staying fit. any brands to recommend? Also, how long will it take me to Scythe 2 acres of ground if I can become proficient? And finally, when I am done, can I nto rake the grass? Id rather not to be honest. Thanks for the video.
Hi! We do sell scythes and the things you need to keep it sharp, some products is unique for our webshop. We ship internationally. www.slattergubben.se
Here is no crap things so you at least learn what to look for!
Two acres will take about 40 hours for a good scyther, I tried to do it in one day this summer but gave up after 14 hours and about 0.4 acres left.
Raking and removal of the grass is important to get a meadow with high biodiversity. Handraking is about 20 hours more for 2 acres.
@@slattergubben6702 Thank you very much for the information. I read using Scythe and then the clippings on top of planted seeds subtracts the need for tilling, watering and produces great results. I will go to your website to place an order. I thought nothing could top Sweedish Snus but maybe I am wrong.
@@cbdyna ha ha, watch out for the snus. It might be even more addictive than scything!
Yes, I was getting back, shoulder and neck ache, but I am 63.
I scythe fairly regularly in the summer but only for very short sessions, and I find I get tense and sore if I try to go at full pace straight from the off. I would recommend gently warming and loosening your muscles up beforehand, starting at a very steady pace and pausing to loosen up some more each time you feel yourself getting tense.

Two questions:
Where to buy a good Scythe?
What is the best way to sharp the blade?
Thanks

Is it possible to cut ditches with this tool?
No problem at all. Very good I say!
My EXP is too low to mow by scyth
time to get on that then!
I am about to learn and cut grass for cows 🐄 😂
Perfect!
What's your footwear? I'm curious
Feelmax from Finland. Very good and durable barefoot boot !
@@slattergubben6702 Thanks!
I click on ONE scythe video
That's how it goes :)
I have made all these mistakes + I discovered that I have been mispronouncing ‘scythe’ my entire life.
I think pronouncing is due to if you are native English or american
I’m curious about how you used to say it as I’ve only ever heard the pronunciation used in the video
@@Nick_308 the other is "skythe"
@@Nick_308 I always pronounced the ‘c’ as a ‘k’
I'm surprised people still have time do this with lawn mowers around.
If you are not disabled you spend way less time turning parts of your lawn to a natural meadow and mow it once a year instead of maybe 15 times with lawn mower. I addition you get cut grass as a resource for covering and give nutrients to plants that needs that. Or making a nice compost where you after some years can harvest the best planting-soil. And scythe mowing is extremely fun and addictive to master. And cheap, silent, durable and sustainable comparing to the machines. Mowing lawn as a lawn with scythe is no problem either.
My biggest mistake is not having a proper snath!
Soon it's hopefully hit the road❤️
Ahhh… Now I can why people invented lawn mower
It's not hard to learn ..det är inte svårt, fast alla har ju ínte haft fäder med bakgrund som bonde ;-) bland mycket annat
Scything comes easy for some, and is more difficult to learn for others, regardless of wether their parents knew how to scythe. I take it you are carrying on the tradition!
not really, I like "living in a jungle" I never bother to do anything for my garden, +1500m2,, as long the road is clear to walk/drive, all the other can stay green... =)@@slattergubben6702
Tell ya need a neck sling, or belt sling. So, all do is move your hips side to side. Holding it and swing it with your arms side by side is? tiresome
you must be really fit.
The first mistake is to not use a mower.
This is bad education. People will not remember your words, but will remember the images of bad techniques. The correct technique should follow immediately after wrong technique.
That's a point. Hopefully people finds my other videos!
Although your suggestion is good calling it bad education is stupid. Only stupid people who have no patience to watch the entire video wont remember how to fix the mistakes. Dont be a troll.
i do all these mistakes at the same time.
