Uni took a crack at oyster shucking. Because their metabolism is 2-3 times the rate of other mammals their size, sea otters needs to eat about 25% of their weight every day.
AMAZING that the otters have learned to use their enclosure to break the shells, since they don't have small stones to hold on their chests. The on-the-back/over-the-head method is REALLY impressive (and cool looking!). Plus, those are some really big, meaty oysters!
Sea otters are among the few animals known to use tools. I the wild, they will use rocks called anvils to crack open the shell of their prey, helping them access the meat inside.
So cool! This is my first time seeing captive otters being given whole, unopened oysters. Usually just the meat is given in blocks of ice or they're provided clams that have already been opened. What wonderful enrichment.
They are normally given unopened oysters, crabs, urchins etc but aquariums don’t usually give them in the enclosures because they’ll hit their food on the glass so they’re given it behind the scenes, but it doesn’t hurt if they hit the ice on the glass. They don’t normally completely remove the shelled foods from their diets because it’s not good for them, they just change where they’re given those foods
And shows how smart they are. In the wild, they’d use rocks to break them open. Here, they know that banging them on the rocks of the enclosure works as well.
The sea-otters here are what powerful and are wild! The sea-otter saw only the figure which broke a shellfish with a stone for exclusive use of oneself in both the aquarium and the nature in Japan. It is really fresh surprise.
Otter and Seagulls have their own ways to get the oysters cracked like: Otter: hammering the clams with the rock by holding the clams. Seagulls: flying while holding the clams then dropping it.
@@barbrn most clam shells are relatively smooth curves but oyster shells tend to be very bumpy. They're also concave on one side, unlike clam shells which are convex on both sides and thus easier to smash open. However, neither oysters or clams are crunchy on the inside.

Amazing. Thanks for looking after them 🦦💗
I lost it when they started smacking the oysters against the rocks 😍
I cannot handle… the cuteness!!! And they do so much of this on their backs x3
Well if that isn't the cutest thing! Put a smile on my face. 🤗
I'm always worried they are going rap their little knuckles on the rocks.
I was not expecting that to be as funny and adorable as it was.
Burst out in laughter after seeing them hit the clams on the rocks

In truth, they are ruthlessly and brutally murdering those oysters but god, does it look cute
Pure enjoyment!

I bet that was cracked up to be a really good time for the otters (pun intended). :)
Were they crunching on the shells at the end?
i never knew oysters were so crunchy
I've never seen an oyster or clam in person but maybe the edge of one of them is crunchy. I thought the shells were smooth; these are very bumpy.

@@ldystardust Thanks! Then what part are they eating that is crunchy?

You need to give ‘em a hammer and a chisel 😂😂😂
I want a oyster...or an otter. Six of one half a dozen of the other.
