Sea otters can eat up to 75 mussels per hour. To crack open hard-shelled prey, the otters smash them on stone anvils. Using archaeology, a new study looks at otter tool use and the debris left behind.

Wild sea otters habitually crack open mussels by smashing them on stationary stones, making them one of the few animals that use tools. To learn more, you can read on here: on.natgeo.com/2FIft2O
The one with the rock on his belly got mad skills cracking open all them mussels lol 😂
😭
😂😂😂😂
He/she is obviously lazy and single. Instead of having to swim up to the nearest bank after each salvage to crack open lunch, may as well bring a rock around. 🤭
I can’t even eat a big Mac while driving
he got a rock on his stomach 😂😂
Wow never imagined that otters are so smart
One of the smartest animals...sea otters r as cute as innovative😍
I love sea otters 😍🦦
I saw one at Jeffreys Bay mid December....running out of the water to catch something on the beach...could be a bird. I was shocked..it looked like a pitch black leopard to me. "How can a 4 legged animal roun out on the beach and then go back into the water? And for a long time he was swimming just near the guys with their surf boards. I saw his black head for quit some time. I did not really see webbed feet. It had longer legs than I could imagine..and the tail was not obviously thick. I looked up photos..but they all look fatter..light colour heads...thicher tails..shorter legs. I could not believe my eyes!! Tried to take a photo but was too late..and in the water.the head did not show up clearly
_Using archaeological methods, the team has analyzed shell fragments left behind by otters._
That's the dumbest thing I ever heard, why would you bother?
_Breakage patterns on the shells suggest that the otters tend to be right "pawed"_
I TAKE IT BACK THAT'S ADORABLE
Otters are the cutest creatures ever! (Apologies to my 6 cats)
i love mussels too
ocean walnuts
When I grow up I want to be a sea otter
Ok to do that you're gonna have to alter your DNA
You can identify as one now apparently
yesssss
Please evolve
Amazing that it can carry a rock on its tummy and still afloat 😲 they're very smart 👍❤
Otters are amazing animals! If you'd like to learn more about them, you can read on here: on.natgeo.com/2FIft2O
Thank you so much Nat Geo for the link 👆❤
I can carry pebbles while I’m swimming, how is that smart
@@Gorpolon 😆
Seems like they got a pretty neat problem solving skills, what they just need
That one otter who keeps a big rock on his tummy was hilarious😂😂
Right pawed? Didn't know animals have preference over favored limb sides for interaction. Nice finding. Thanks NG
Me too
Cats are left pawed!!!
The one with the stone on his tummy is a big mood 😂😂😂
Wait a few hundred years and they'll know how to make fire. Smart critters!
Smacking a piece of flint to make sparks, then floating around with a fire on a rock on their belly. "Hey, everyone, who wants grilled mussels?"
Maybe a few thousand years with the help of human science and technology
PROTECT OMG THEY LITERALLY THE CUTEST THING
75 mussels for hour all day wow👍🏼 carry on
I think they just clap on the riverside asking for more shells
They are not river otters, they're sea otters. They are floating in the sea. River otters are almost a different breed.
@@kristineandersen6762 Not almost. They're literally a separate species. Sea otters are about twice the weight of the largest river otters (up to 65lbs vs about 35lbs for a large river otter).
They are obviously enjoying the mussles. Smart and cute
Otters are superior
that is amazing that it puts the rock on its stomach, then uses it as a mobile tool so it can eat while swimming!
I don’t know why we use tables when we can use our tummy’s 😂
It's not fair. My mum always used to complain if I ate off my belly and tell me off if I threw my trash in the sea...
So this is what Obi-Wan was talking about!
We're looking at sea otters! Six of them here.
My favourite creature ever. I plan to retire to Canada or the US and live out my days watching them.
Heaven's design team brought me here😁. Nice anime
Aww Adorable otters ..so happy to see them in their environment ..thanks for sharing !
So smart and very cute to watch .their babies are the cutest 💕
"They can eat up to 75 mussels per hour.'
Challenge accepted.
Came here from Heaven's Design Team because of how they talked about otters. 😍 🥰
Lol, that anime have straight up facts
Kawaii
The way they flop to their back before eating was just 😍😍
Can you imagine eating mussels at the dinner table with a sea otter?
hahahaha they'll devour the whole thing before you even start
Very smart and amazing creatures.
Dude literally took the rcok with him😂
Sea otters are endangered now.. please protect them
Petition to change the name of otters to Water Doggos
Otterly fascinating!
I just feel like sea otters are humanized when they bang on stuff lol
They're endangered? 💔
kindof... they are listed as threatened due to getting caught in nets, reduction of food supplies and oil spills
@@goodolrainbowpet aww that's awful
@@andae0699 well i have better news for you... with the increase demand for mussels more humans will try to farm grow them which will allow the populations in nature to boom... oil companies can be held accountable for their spills by use of market forces (essentially we dont buy oil or gas anymore or refuse to buy gas from companjes that get their fuel from certain companies)... although we cant prevent otters from being caught in nets, proper care can be made to save them and safely return them to the water after the net is pulled up
I bet this is Ewan McGregor’s favorite program
I did the same thing otters did at the pool, good thing no one was watching.
Do you think the otter with the rock on its belly. Lends it other otters?
Their full time job is to eat, sleep and play.
I'm not sure about sea otters, but the swamp otters that occasionally pass by my house during the night have a deceptively squeaky noises. At first, I thought it was a baby bird that fell from the nest or something, until my dad corrected me. How come in videos(UA-cam), I barely ever heard they make vocal noises?
Joey could've been like this, out in the wild, someday, had he not lost his mom, but he's doing pretty good now, momma must be so proud 🥺💜🦦
So cute
Who came here from that Obi Wan clip
"Sea otters are among the very few marine animals known to use tools."
So basically, you're telling me the smart animals are in the air force or army, then?
Coast Guard, duuuuh. 🤣
they look like little kids that's playing
I like how you felt you needed to put text on the screen explaining to us humans why the otter is doing what it's doing. Yea, a lot of people probably aren't as smart as an otter now that I think about it
You could say that he cracked open a brew with the bois
Ewan what are we looking at he-

Completely biodegradable shell unlike human takeout
Absolutely amazing....thank you.
What was going on at the end there? Lol did they immediately resort to scrubbing themselves after eating?
Please please people shouldn't keep them as pet... don't remove them to their natural habitat...
Amazing how they know how to use tool.
It's a seafood feast
