    Your "thoughts" on the Ikawa were extremely well presented. I have been subscribed for a while but not getting notifications. Finally realized I hadn't "hit" the bell. Over the next few weeks I'll be watching your previous videos. I just started roasting for personal consumption using an old Showtime Rotisserie. It has no temperature control but has helped me decide to go to the next step. Now searching for the right roaster.

      Thanks so much buddy! I’m trying to get better at making the points clear in the videos. Actually harder than it sounds. Roasting is a fun journey! What are your goals with roasting going forward? That will help determine what roaster you should look at.

      @@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I'm 73 and pretty comfortable in my retirement, so I only plan to roast for myself, family and a few friends. I'm fairly technically minded (former airline pilot) so I want something a little less crude, looking for something that can handle 250-300 grams on autopilot. I'm leaning toward a Kaldi but would like something with integrated heat source.

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee

      I think the Arc 800 is a great little machine. It does about 800 grams but after you adjust for a good capacity your looking at about 650 grams. Showroom coffee sales them and they seem to have pretty good customer service. I have loved my little Kaldi but I had the cheapest one so there was no data or anything you could pull from it without manually installing it. Let know what you decide! I am curious to see what you go with.

    It would be super interesting if you could find four professional roasters with an Ikawa Pro to discuss their strategy for scaling up from the Ikawa to their production roaster. It would be great to hear from those who production roast on both something like a Loring and a traditional gas fired drum roaster.

      Great idea! My podcast wish Jason I just did we kind of discuss it and he has a 15kg Loring. Would love to have a chat with a few others and stick it all together into a single video. Truly appreciate you watching buddy!

    • @larryduran1047
      @larryduran1047 2 роки тому +1

      @@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffeeI listened to the podcast. While I get Jason's point that you will not be able take a short/fast sub-seven minute roast profile from the Ikawa and use the same profile on a Loring or any other production roaster that needs a longer roast profile, I assume you should be able to take away roast profile concepts and apply them. For example, maybe you find on the Ikawa that a particular coffee does well with a faster or slower roast profile with a certain percentage of time spent in the second and third phases. It seems that these are the types of concepts that should carry over.

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  2 роки тому +1

      That is what I think and my point behind getting it. If I can find a good flavor on the Ikawa, I can use that data and back into it on a larger machine. It may take a few trials but at least you know what the capability of that coffee is. And I am sure the more you do the more you learn how both machines can work together and it will get easier over time. That is my hope anyway. Definitely going to be doing some videos on that in the future as I figure it all out.

      Ya coffee bean corral has some pretty exotic stuff in low batch sizes. I really like that. For the Ikawa, I truly believe if it is not being used for business it is really hard to justify for personal use. The fresh roast and other machines can put out some dang good coffee once you get the trial and error batches out of the way.

    I'm kinda jealous you can use MacBook to run the machine....I'm opposed to Apple, so I had to get a Android Tab. As far as your reasons for purchase, I'm 100% on the same thought process. I've gotten the green-light to start sourcing new coffees from all over. This little beauty will defiantly help me understand and give educated decision on what is good for us. I'm happy with our Pro100. It gives me the ability to have a 5 bowl cupping and testing a few days later to see how age affects the bean. As far as transferring to production roaster, I'm with Rao's opinion that it'll be almost impossible even if talking a Loring or Typhoon. There are just too many variables that can affect such a transfer..but how awesome and easy would that be?! Then again, if roasters just use the library...out of ease or laziness....how many companies would have almost identical coffee?
    (I was confused why everyone was commenting "Coffee Bean Corral" 😅🤦‍♂)

      I was against apple for the longest time but after my last HP died I had to find something different. I edit a lot of videos so the processing and uploading speeds kill me. I got the new M1 chip and OMG I can't believe the difference it has made. What use to take hours (4-6 hours) to export and render a video now just takes 20-30 minutes. If you ever try apple, def go with the M1 or M2 chip. The difference is insane. But ya, I am loving the hell out of this little Ikawa. Just starting to experiment away from the Library and test out some things and cupping the heck out of coffee. Can't wait to start using it for the purpose you are using it for!

    Have you tried saving a new profile while its roasting? I was trying to roast a new bean 3-4 different ways to get an idea of how I can manipulate said coffee. I tried to edit the profile only slightly between the roasts. Anyway...while roasting batch #1 I tried to edit that profile and the save it as #2, but it kept overwriting what I was currently doing instead of "saving new" like I wanted.

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  2 роки тому

      I have found that I have to make any changes once the roast is complete if I want to save them. I tried the same thing I believe during a roast and it basically gave me an error message not allowing it to save during a roast. So I make the changes and number them like you did. Hasn't bothered me to bad but I wish I could organize it a little better or put the library in folders. Its becoming just a long list that I have to sort through and remember which one I used to roast a certain coffee with. I am creating a list of little issues and when I make the review video I am going to add some of that plus some issues that other people have brought to my attention.

    Did you also look into the Roest? If so, how do you think it compares to the Ikawa Pro? I know you had a good first impression of the Ikawa Pro, but do you still think it is a great roaster now that you have had more time to use it?

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  2 роки тому

      I did. It was definitely a good bit more expensive but I have never used it. There is a lady named Kat who replied to one of my comments. I asked what she thought between the ikawa and the Roast? Her answer is below...
      It a sweet little machine! I’m not super super familiar with the Ikawa, but I’d say they’re relatively different. This one can do up to 120g, and I know Ikawa can only do 50 at a time. This one has a lot of ability to adjust the roast as you’re going, and as far as I’ve experienced, ikawa is a mostly “set and go” thing. As far as ease, yes it’s very easy, though there’s a learning curve getting into it I’d say. And data, it gives you roast curves that you can compare with bean temp, air temp, power, and RoR. Hope that answers your question! Haha

      @@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee - You can buy a good used car for that price. Too expensive for 100 gram output that you can’t even transfer your fav profiles to a professional size roaster. Best save up and buy a good used professional roaster imo. .

      I did. For cupping it can roast enough for 4 cupping sessions at a time or 2 normal coffees. The larger option can obviously do more. It’s more for cupping and picking green coffee though. Not really feasible to buy just to make pour overs with. Unless you have the means to do so. For its purpose, it is a good machine. I’m going to use it to start testing a ton of coffee while I build out the roastery so I can move quickly purchasing and roasting when I get it ready to go.

    Seems like the IKAWA’s are useful as samplers, but not much more. 50g of coffee is basically 3 espressos (I dose 15g ea.). Perhaps for cupping it doesn’t matter, but that’s just a days worth of beans which have to de-gas for a couple of days or so. Seems like you’d need to roast just about every day just per person!

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee

      It is definitely just made for sample roasting. Easy to travel with if you are going to different locations or to origin. The small batch allows you to test 15 coffees over a short amount of time without having a ton of coffee left over from a normal roaster. It's good for making future coffee purchasing decisions.
