  • Here's an example roast with the Kaleido M6 coffee roaster to help you see what it is like to roast on one of these. It's unscripted so I dropped a few thoughts as I was going along, feel free to ask me about anything in the comments.

    Oldtime Coffee lover, but never thought to roast myown bean, recently been thinking aobut it, and found your video. While it was like being in a science class, and I was lost 80% of the time, I felt it was informative, and has given me the desire to start looking into this hobby/addiction. Thanks for a great video.

    I must have rewatched this video about 10times in the past day, I am expecting delivery of the M2 Sniper Pro this week. This has been a really, useful video, thanks for sharing!

    Hi Charlie, great video, you pretty much use the same method l do with my roaster ☕

    Very useful, thanks! I am new to roasting and started on the M2. I really love it so far. However, some of the design choices are a bit odd and I wonder how much of a layer of obfuscation it adds. I started modifying the Kaleido provided Artisan interface to try to peel back this layer. In the video you too talk about smoke/fan confusion.
    So far, I have renamed a few items (roller->drum, smoke->fan, power->heat). Still the following buttons are a bit of a mystery: "Power Auto/Manu" (sends HPM,A / HPM,M to the Sniper), "Start/Stop Heating" (sends PIDon/PIDoff to Artisan). Thing is, I usually press a few of these buttons including Power100 to get things going. Having tried manual mode, my target temp is not exceeded (as you mention in the video), so some kind of automation is always present. The PIDon/off stuff sounds a lot like asking Artisan to take automatic control of the roast curve? Can you shed any light on these?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому +1

      Yes if you have a background curve loaded you can set to auto and it will try to match the curve. There are some settings in artisan that you can adjust to make this curve adjustment more soft, but personally, I just prefer to you pay attention to the roast itself and I always get better coffee than any auto roasting software. Maybe this is just from my experience and paying close attention to the roast, I'm sure you can get passable coffee if you use an auto roasting function.
      For the most part I haven't found the mistranslations all that confusing, but perhaps this is because I've lived in Asia and have gotten used to mistranslations 😅

    SUCH a great coffee-geek video! If only we could all afford that roaster. :)
    Would you kindly consider linking the the coffee bean from your favorite seller?
    Do you know if there is an espresso machine where you can view pressure and volume over an extraction?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому

      Take a look at wildcardcoffeeroasters.com - David is doing the roasting there and he's excellent.
      As for pressure and volume you're looking at machines like the Decent DE1, Sanremo You and other higher tech machines like that. Not too many at a lower price point I'm afraid, though you can do all sorts of things with apps and smart scales to bridge the gap

    Thanks, this was useful. How difficult is it from a scale of 1-10 to achieve a nice light roast on naturals?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  11 місяців тому

      Great question! Honestly I think all small roasters struggle to do light roasts. You need a certain thermal mass to roast light, and that comes from a giant block of cast iron mostly. I have done some light side of medium roasts but with all IR heating cage drums you'll find it hard to get enough development with a light roast because there's very little residual heat. I've gotten some good ones but difficulty out of 10 might be a 7. It requires some skill and finesse for sure.

    Thank you for your efforts. I'm currently considering upgrading my roaster and the M6 looks very interesting. I live in Alaska and need to be able to roast inside. I have not been able find any information on venting of this roaster through external piping. I was hoping you could shed some light on that issue. Thank you for your help.

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  4 місяці тому

      Yes you can just attach a heatproof pipe to it and vent it any way you can. I even used my kitchen vent which was fine

    Bean emit a strong acrid sweet smell during roasting, right? Where do the exhaust fumes go during roasting?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому

      There's an exhaust at the back. I didn't need to attach a pipe or fan in the roastery cos it's small and the barn is HUGE.

    Hi Charlie! Nice videos ! Do you live in Japan? If yes do you have roast classes?I live in Japan. I’m interested in roasting and I’m a newbie. I’ve ordered a Kaleido M1 dual system that I will receive soon I think.

    what do you think about this vs the aillio bullet? Which one performs better or which one is more worth their price? Cheers

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому +1

      They are slightly different machines. I have only used the bullet a few times. I really like both of them and if I were ever able to get a Bullet I could do a comparison video 😍

    Hi Charlie, where do you buy your green beans from?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому

      Right now I'm getting from Falcon Micro, but the price is quite high. Looking for alternatives in the UK that let me buy in big enough bulk to actually save money while buying nice beans 😅

    Hi. Do you recommend a beginner to opt for Kaleido M6? My goal is to move from Home to commercial.

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  11 місяців тому +2

      Really hard to say. Commercial it doesn't really make sense to get the M6, unless you want to make less than minimum wage in profit. It can work as a sample roaster for a bigger setup.

    what setting do you use to get fans to automatically turn on,I cant get my m6 to do it

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  10 місяців тому

      Check in Artisan config, there's a part I think it's auto drop, which should also engage the cooling fan after a few seconds when it sees the temperature drop.

  • @paoloabes25

    M1 have 3 types of variant. which is better one to purchase.

    • @homecafecharlie

      Generally I would get the pro version with artisan connection only. The tablet is fine, but you don't need it and artisan is generally better for recording your roasts.

    Can this roaster be used to make lots of coffee consistently?

    • @homecafecharlie

      For sure, definitely hook it up to Artisan and use the background curve so you can see what you did, but definitely very replicable

    Yes you can pick them out. Would not be that hard
    I once made 750 kg of a test product at work and we had it granulated. The toll producer that granulated it contaminated it with kitty litter because they didn't clean the equipment out before they ran our product. This product cost $ 2.5 million to make 25 years ago.
    We had two people per shift..... For about 3 weeks... Day and night.... Spreading about 1 kg at a time out in pans and picking the kitty litter out by hand. It was easy to see because the kitty litter was tan to Gray and the product was off white.
    In the end after all the trouble of making this test material and picking the kitty litter out of it, the customer never actually used it they waited for the next semi-commercial produce material to do evaluations.
