As someone who has played early Donkey Kong games, I was legitimately surprised when I saw Pauline in the Nintendo Starlets panel for Puzzle Swap on the 3DS. Of course, I later found out that Pauline has made several appearances lately, more commonly in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.
I always thought Galaxy 2 was what happened after Rosalina hit the big reset button in the sky. It wasn't 100 years later, but more like the same Star Festival, but things happen differently.
This game had many surprises for me. First, the replication of the original donkey kong game only to realize it continued, and now the many stages for the final "boss". Cool series.
For the 8-13 stage, the person who thought it was challenging probably didn't think you could touch that plant and live. I didn't expect it. Usually you get damaged by enemies on touch, though that makes no sense most the time.
I very much _did_ enjoy this LP, both as a viewer and a fellow gamer who grew up with the game. You flew through the game without skimping on anything interesting or important. Your observations, trivia, and strategies were all interesting and fun to hear. Even when you got hung up on death, the pacing well done. This was a joy to see through and I look forward to future offerings.
Saw this LP and decided to give it a shot after realizing I had an old copy in my mother's house. GREAT STUFF. Glad you introduced me to the game as I had a lot of fun.
I can only imagine Chugga's reaction when he sees this: "Oh my god, Jon finally completed an LP. It's the end of the world!" Your vids are awesome, man. Didn't even know this game existed before you posted the LP.
One reason I love watching Jon: he updates rarely, meaning that his videos are like a present, not a daily routine like chuggaaconroy, (but I love chugga too) and he just has really smooth commentary for anyone, really. Love you're Lps Jon!
1:55 "But if you mash the A button fast enough, you can get killed." I love how he didn't even miss a beat when he said that... as if that's what he was going to say all along!
This is why I consider you the higbar for LPer's Jon. Because the content and production is so good, I could wait four or more years for it. Every single second of this entire affair felt planned out (deaths included) and made for pure enjoyment. So no Jon, thank you for doing what you do. And keep doing it. -DarkX
This was a fun little LP, Jon. I may have to replay this again sometime. It's been far too long since I've last played it. Looking forward to more vids in the future! Keep up the brilliant work! :)
so looking back and finding this gem of the past talking about how Pauline hasn't been in anything, ha, it's 2021 now and she has had a great reintroduction to the franchise
Wow... I was just thinking the same thing... That's some crazy logic right there, but it makes sense, too, when you put everything together in order. I couldn't have said it better myself...
gotta say thank you so much for LPing this game. i wasn't aware there was a predesesor to mario vs donkey kong and i loved this game to hell the second i got it.
There's a series of hidden levels in this game, mostly blank ones used for filler on the cartridge. One of the more interesting ones is the final fight, except there's a counter in the top left that tracks how many items you've bounced off your feet. There's also a version of the final boss with an armadillo running round each of the outer platforms.
The Runaway Guys reference is actually so spot-on... chuggaa will always get lucky with something in the end, with NCS MAYBE getting something good happening to him, and ProtonJon is just always the favorite to win because of overall skill level.
I imagine someone else mentioned this already, but... eh, whatever. The ladder in 8-5 is for one of the bonus items. You can see it in the upper right corner of the map. You *can* reach it with a double jump, probably (well, maybe a triple jump), but then, you can reach a lot of places with a few maneuvers and it's never stopped the level designers from adding more unnecessary items.
Less than three months to complete an LP? That's.... pretty reasonable, actually. And you've kept me interested the whole time despite the game itself not really holding my attention. Good job.
I finally realized why Jon chose to LP this game. It's his way of fighting with Chugga when he isn't around. Jon is Mario and he is fighting DK, which is Chugga (if you don't know what I'm talking about, those are the characters they use in the Mario Party games).
18:50 it used to be a villain union thing or something. Yeah up until the early 2000's villains could get there faces on anything as long as it was there main base. Volcano's Towers, and theme parks were some of them ore popular spots. Apparently they stopped in 2001 when the Heroes realized that the main villain...yeah his home has his face on it.
The rom is more restricted than normal, like all of nintendo's main franchises, so you will have to do some searching to find it, it is out there though. And unless I'm mistaken, he is playing the original cartrigage(misspelled that), through a super gameboy because the supergameboy had some special features when used with this game in particular.
Jackie Chan from the animated show "Jackie Chan Adventures" used to scream "Bad day, bad day, bad day!" while running for his life and had a niece named Jade Chan.
I'll explain it with game sources. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Snake's Codec conversations says that the original DK is our current DK's GRANDFATHER. In Donkey Kong 64, Cranky Kong states in the beginning of the game, that Donkey Kong (which is the current DK) is his son. THEREFORE Donkey Kong Jr. is Cranky Kong. Father DK is... never seen again after these games.
Yep also, in DKC2, Cranky calls himself Diddy's "grandpappy" which means he's Diddy's grandfather. Diddy is also current DK's nephew so that's more proof that DKjr. is current DK.
@23:40 did anyone else notice tetris pieces in the clouds? Also- @25:05 "And so the epic fight of man v.s. monkey went on for three lives. As Mario kept made stupid moves and Donkey Kong kept getting really lucky" 'The RunnawayGuys in a nutshell' *Gets hit* "Make that four lives." So he has been imagining DK as Chuggaconroy this entire time...why am I not surprised.
It could also help explain why Mario was a carpenter (named Jumpman, actually) in the first Donkey Kong whereas he's a plumber in the newer games. Mind == blown
Giant Donkey kongs face and disembodied hands are so similar to Bongo-Bongo from zelda and(to a certain extent) Wham Bam Rock and Wham Bam jewel from Kirby
on 8-10 what i normally do is grab springboard, grab key, fall, grab springboard before dying (yes this is possible, falling damage is somehow negated when you land on a springboard), and get to the exit
"...but if you mash the A button fast enough, you can get killed!"
I love how naturally Jon says that, like it's what he meant to say all along.
27:45 "Wouldn't that just be called bro-fisting yourself?"
Waluigi will teach you many things, Jon.
And now Pauline is in Mario Odyssey as a main character.
Time makes fool of us all
the music in the last stages is awesome. i kept replaying these stages over and over just to hear the songs.
Loved the ending of the game. Everyone becomes a big happy family. lol
I think that final Donkey Kong fight was remade in a special boss in the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest.
***** Not of this game. DKC2.
So that 2015 joke and current status of superman...
Your comedic hyperbole become a understatement
This game had many surprises for me. First, the replication of the original donkey kong game only to realize it continued, and now the many stages for the final "boss". Cool series.
you know, to think that in the original, you stop DK before he even gets close to his home... mind blowing
Pauline is actually JUMPMAN's original girlfriend. in donkey kong, he was originally known as jumpman
Jumpman is Mario! Heck, this game confirms Mario is Jumpman. Can't you Mario fans research to know the truth?
For the 8-13 stage, the person who thought it was challenging probably didn't think you could touch that plant and live. I didn't expect it. Usually you get damaged by enemies on touch, though that makes no sense most the time.
Gotta love this game, and it's cool to see all the tricks to the stages. I might go back and play it again after this!
The benefit of owning my own house: i'm my own landlord.
Thanks for the LP Jon.
Thanks for doing this LP! It was fun seeing a game like this, especially with you enjoying yourself so much. =)
I didn't think of DK as Chugga until I was editing this episode and realize that what I said worked perfectly for TRG.
Nice surprise ending there :D Good show on the playthrough overall. Nice to see such a massively underrated game get the love it deserves.
He had a real heart felt plea for this game that was 5 episodes long
That ending made me smile quite a bit. Thanks for taking us along for the ride, Jon!
I can only imagine Chugga's reaction when he sees this:
"Oh my god, Jon finally completed an LP. It's the end of the world!"
Your vids are awesome, man. Didn't even know this game existed before you posted the LP.
Very nice LP Jon.
Such Classy Commentary.
Such funny freakouts.
They should make a game with Wario vs DK like this but have fat guy physics
One reason I love watching Jon: he updates rarely, meaning that his videos are like a present, not a daily routine like chuggaaconroy, (but I love chugga too) and he just has really smooth commentary for anyone, really. Love you're Lps Jon!
Picking Mario up with his fist was just priceless, and completely unexpected.
Music for the final world is just amazing.
I'll have to give it a proper listen sometime.
1:55
"But if you mash the A button fast enough, you can get killed."
I love how he didn't even miss a beat when he said that... as if that's what he was going to say all along!
This is why I consider you the higbar for LPer's Jon. Because the content and production is so good, I could wait four or more years for it. Every single second of this entire affair felt planned out (deaths included) and made for pure enjoyment.

15:35 Jon says "Bad Day" like Jackie from Jackie Chan Adventures! I love it! XD
was great seeing your lp return man great job that was a great twist at the end lol
so looking back and finding this gem of the past talking about how Pauline hasn't been in anything, ha, it's 2021 now and she has had a great reintroduction to the franchise
I love how you nonchalantly talked about Donkey Kong Jr being dead.
kind of reminds me of the wario land 3 final boss. i'll never forget the credits song for that game. it's so good.
The ending cut scene shows how Donkey Kong Jr started!
Well played, Jon.
And shall we say: "congratulations" with your new place.
I hope you will be having good times there.
Wow... I was just thinking the same thing... That's some crazy logic right there, but it makes sense, too, when you put everything together in order. I couldn't have said it better myself...

That end speech. It was great.
The Runaway Guys reference is actually so spot-on... chuggaa will always get lucky with something in the end, with NCS MAYBE getting something good happening to him, and ProtonJon is just always the favorite to win because of overall skill level.
I love this video just for the line "The runaway guys in a nutshell"
I imagine someone else mentioned this already, but... eh, whatever.

I'm just happy you updated! And congratulations on moving!
That ending was the greatest. XD
Less than three months to complete an LP? That's.... pretty reasonable, actually. And you've kept me interested the whole time despite the game itself not really holding my attention. Good job.
fantastic cameo by Sonic the Hedgehog the Porcupine the Golden Onion Ring Eater in this episode
I finally realized why Jon chose to LP this game. It's his way of fighting with Chugga when he isn't around. Jon is Mario and he is fighting DK, which is Chugga (if you don't know what I'm talking about, those are the characters they use in the Mario Party games).
Wonderful way to spend a half hour.
One of my favorite games.
Reminds me of the giant clown boss in Wario Land 2.
I love that boss and that game.
This is your funniest playthrough I've watched.... thanks! Just so you know I contacted PETA because of you :)
Words to live by right there, play games to enjoy the game, not just for the story alone.
great vid and fun to watch well done jon, loved every ep, wonder what's next?
More LPs like this! I barely miss the rom hacks anymore, this LP was really good.
Phew, that was a pretty cool let's play. Thanks a lot Jon!
Jon you know exactly what we all think that lava looks like, and that's death water.
lol i love the shot at emile near the end :3
DK 64: Cranky Kong: Well if it isn't my good for nothing SON. this cranky is current DK's dad. you've been fighting grandpa DK this whole time!
"Mario stopped being stupid and finally killed the monkey." ...should we be checking that Chuggaaconroy's still alive?
that ending. that made me laugh pretty damned hard.
Great video and lets play can't wait for the next!
Good to know that Chugga hasn't annoyed you to death...Yet.
Hopefully this means his next video will be a superman LP. Love your videos Jon! :)
It was Cranky Kong the whole time?!! My whole childhood...the modern Donkey Kong...
Mind = Blown! >x
Mm... second time Mario's died. He has a halo at the "end" of each DK Jr. round when he falls from the ceiling.
"I have to wait until I get big before climbing this ladder." - ProtonJon.
Hope you had a good move. And that RunawayGuys quote thing you did was hilarious, because it is sorta true
Mario looks like a shy guy when he falls
So I guess we can call that lava in rocky mountain
*dramatic pause*
DEATH WATER!!!! B)
Hahaha Mass Murder
Another great LP has come to an end. I really liked this one because it's not a game that you see everyday. Thanks for that :3
18:50

The modern Donkey Kong's father is never seen to my knowledge but Diddy Kong is the modern Donkey Kong's nephew
9:19- I love this stage
9:25
Stage: You DIE!
Jackie Chan from the animated show "Jackie Chan Adventures" used to scream "Bad day, bad day, bad day!" while running for his life and had a niece named Jade Chan.
Dad. In DK64 he says: "Well if it isn't my good-for-nothing son"
That ending amused me.
THEREFORE
Donkey Kong Jr. is Cranky Kong.
Father DK is... never seen again after these games.
That final Donkey Kong fight really reminds me of the final boss from Wario Land 3... even though this came out first.
25:18 I died. Just... too perfect.
What happened to Donkey Kong 2? Or was Donkey Kong Jr. essentially just Donkey Kong 2?
Pretty much.
There was a Game & Watch game called "Donkey Kong 2", but it's basically just the last level of Donkey Kong Jr.
***** eye see.
PROTON JON COMPLETED AN LP! PROTON JON COMPLETED AN LP IN MY LIFETIME! IT'S A MIRACLE!
"Keep on your toes"
He says, while handstanding.

So he has been imagining DK as Chuggaconroy this entire time...why am I not surprised.
You've gained a new viewer Canadian-can't-grow-a-beard-man, i´ll watch your work from now on.
Yaaaaaaay!
I've wanted this to be uploaded for a while.
This was the most amazing LP ever.
It could also help explain why Mario was a carpenter (named Jumpman, actually) in the first Donkey Kong whereas he's a plumber in the newer games. Mind == blown
Yeah, apparently Donkey Kong Country Returns made it that Cranky Kong was DK's grandfather, not simply father. Dunno why, but there you go.
Nice to see a new video, Jon. Good stuff as ever.
Nice final line.
Also, you can't possibly be saving peach, because the girl you save in the end wears pants. Therefore, it's polyanna!
I think that someday someone will make a SITCOM out of this, and it would be called;" Those Wacky Murderers".
I was just thinking to myself, Jon hasn't uploaded a chapter of this in a while, and suddenly it appears in front of me. Telepathy for the win!
*Tries to prevent self from making fisting jokes at the end fight.*
Guys we've entered the Twilight Zone. ProtonJon uploaded.
