I AM HORRIBLY OFFENDED BECAUSE I SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION AND AM ALSO A CACTUS. ...I'm mostly depressed because typing with my spines is super hard. This took me three days.
i think this is the first comment that has been left by a youtuber (that has over 100k subs) that doesn't get 500 likes and comments. so......congrats?
Sorry folks, due to a surprise event happening today (It's nothing bad, don't worry, it's quite the opposite), there won't be any Yoshi's Island episodes or streams for a couple of days due to me being out of the country. Not sure when the next stream or video will be, as I'm gone until Monday/possibly Tuesday. I'll update you all when I'm home, as I don't think I'll have internet access while gone.
Just in case you weren't aware, you didn't do the, "take an egg, leave an egg" thing at all this video. I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't realize it.
It's alright Jon! It's really nice to see that you have a mostly regular upload schedule on this series. These things happen and it's okay if you need to go on hiatus for any period of time. Really enjoying this LP so far, when I was younger I had the version of this game for the GameBoy Advance. I'm really loving this because it brings back a lot of nostalgia and memories of a much better time in my life, as well as remind me of how terrible I was at this game. Please do your best to finish this series at your own pace, it means a lot to me c:
You know, usually I'd get sort of frustrated watching someone stumble through a game like this, missing stuff, but for some reason, when Proton Jon does it, I don't feel that way. weird...
I think its because Jon openly admits he misses something or he actually says he thinks he might be missing something instead of pretending he's perfect.
***** I've heard of DSP, never watched him, but I know he uploads 10 minute chunks of video 4-5 times a day with no edits, so there's no way I'd get into that :|
Mad_Hatter_LPS I dunno, I've watched people who admitted they missed something, (namely NCS, though I still like him, but can't stand it when he stumbles around) so it's probably something else for me.
This is why Jon is my favorite LP'er, or even just UA-camr in general. He responds to the community and answers to criticism to try and improve. The mature yet funny attitude wasn't enough, apparently, and I respect that. You go, Jon.
Alright... I like the idea that you have going for how to do each episode. Also kudos to whoever thought of the Duplicating Red Coin Glitch... I never knew about that. BTW Proton Jon , I just realized that there was _technically_ another glitch in this game... and 2-6 just reminded me of it... the glitch is that if you Butt Stomp in that little pool of water that you come out of in that stage, Yoshi will, if you do it right, hit the ground in the water and stay underwater... you can even throw the eggs underwater. There are probably more glitches that I'm not remembering... it has been a *while* since I've played the GBA version in full or have gone back to the SNES version. As for the Giant Egg Glitch... if you can pull it off, then alright (though I want to see you pull it off because of what happens after you get the glitch down right). Just to point out how to perform it again, jump into the air, launch a Giant Egg into the air, immediately lick it out of the air before it hits the ground, then continue licking it until it is just barely off-screen when you are at the goal and once you do that carefully enter the goal so that the egg doesn't despawn... you'll see what happens if you do it right... though I'd recommend that you get a small amount of practice with the first few Giant Eggs (i.e. licking them out of the air) before you go and do the real deal... and have up to three so that you'll have three tries. Again this is SNES only, because in the GBA version you can't even lick the Eggs out of the air. You don't have to perform this glitch if you don't want to and I won't force the issue anymore than this.
There's actually a bug in this level where you can go back to 1-1, with all its unique flowers and red coins, if you go back up the pipe at 22:12. You can build a very awful melody out of those extra red coins that way!
You know what, even though this video is late, I don't care. You're an excellent content producer, and I trust you to provide quality videos with each upload.
I find it most enjoyable watching you when you are candid or having fun. Something felt off to me this episode, like you were really trying to make us happy, and as a result weren't really feeling it. That is good and all, but if you are happy we can feel it. Likewise if you get popped by a bandit (for example) let it happen, and joke about it like you did with the lava instead of thinking how it may affect how we perceive your performance.
This maze is one of the levels that I remember the most from when I was a kid. I remember getting completely stuck in this level when I was like 4 years old then going back to it in my teen years and breezing right through it lol....just one of the many fond memories I have of this game, wondering around aimlessly trying to figure it out lol
I like this approach. It's good because it jogs your memory so you don't wander as much but also keeps the play-through feeling real because you don't have muscle memory going yet. +1
I'll track your screw-ups, Jon! ...That sounds a lot meaner than I meant it to... Episode Stats: Resets: 2 (W2 S5 & S6) Stars Missed: 3 (W2 S5) Red Coins Missed: 5 (W2 S5 - 1; W2 S6 - 4) Flowers Missed: 1 (W2 S6) Bonus Game Losses: 1/1 I'll post the over-all totals later; you'll excuse me if I'm a little tired right now. Jon, I'm enjoying this LP! Keep up the good work. Love the map idea, btw.
I kinda think it would better blind. Because game layout is part of what makes a game good or not. If something is too confusing, it is something that should effect the overall judgement of it. And if you do fuck up, you can fix it in post like you did in this one.
***** But Boolossus also pops into all the individual Boos with one hit where as Bigger Boo gets bigger with each hit so I think Bigger Boo is the well bigger Boo
When it comes to background Bandits: If you deal with the Green Shy Guys before the bandits are able to grab Baby Mario, said bandits will not appear at all. Also, was totally gonna mention the duplicate coin thing this video, but then you demonstrated it. Nice.
Before I'm done watching through 2-4 something I got to say, in level 2-2 for the last flower, you can either shoot an egg at it which you did first time, nice job, and my way of doing it, is to grab an enemy and then spit it out to the flower, also works. Tip if you like fluttering in the air, since this technique saved my life multiple times. You'll know when to flutter again if you see Yoshi's arm stretching out after you're done with the fluttering animation. Also that last flower in 2-4, just shoot an egg at it or spit a Ghost Guy at it.
Most people don't think "Since the boss is a Boo you can hit with eggs, I can do it with the smaller ones" because it's a boss which means there must be a way to defeat it. Honestly I didn't know that until now either.
It's probably worth mentioning that some rooms/levels in this game show all the coins with the "red" tinge of colour. I don't know why exactly, but it's something I noticed when playing through this a few months ago.
Jon, you should do a ground pound after a boss fight to try to see some of the glorious frames of the ground pound because the game freezes yoshi whilst the boss is in his death 'explosion' Also if you didn't know already, on the world 4 boss, The red one (spoiler free), perform the final hit whilst the boss is in his falling over animation for a beautiful non-game-breaking glitch.
I like the map compromise idea. It still seemed like you were experiencing the game, as opposed to going through the motions for our benefit. I'd think the memory jog probably will make it at least a little easier on those who don't like the more tedious exploration that can sometimes be involved in trying for 100% this if you're not looking at a guide.
"I can't ask someone else to find the stats for me because that's not fair" You realize a lot of us would do it for free just because of being fans and such? You do have someone tracking deaths, though that's a lot simpler. I might actually do it if nobody else is. Gives me an excuse to play the game for like, the 100th time.
When we were kids, my brother and I never caught on that you could only kill the boos by facing the other way and bouncing an egg off the wall. We just assumed they were invincible. Needless to say, we never beat Bigger Boo. When I finally watched an LP of this game years later, I face palmed after watching that boss fight.
In all my years of playing Mario games, I have never so much as thought about this until today. How come Yoshi can eat ghost Shy Guys, but not Boos? Are the vengeful spirits of fallen Shy guys just less powerful somehow? Or can Yoshi normally eat all kinds of ghosts, but Boos are just the exception? The lack of consistency in this series over which types of souls can be devoured by dinosaurs concerns me.
Shy Guy ghosts are always corporeal but Boos are only corporeal when you aren't looking at them, Yoshi can't eat Boos because he'd have to look at them to eat.
Good point. Sure, in some other Mario games, they don't turn around right away, so it might be possible to get behind them and attack them if you're quick enough... but I don't think you can do that in this one. I guess it depends on whether you're playing by 2D Mario rules or 3D Mario rules.
Stage 2-5 is the first stage where the game introduces its first dosage of "think fast!" Thankfully, those stages are sparingly spread out in Yoshi's Island, but man oh man, they are a pain in ass to earn 100 points on.
At about 13:35 I have this feeling that if Emile was around at the time he would have been like "Don't you mean, a new TRAINS formation Jon?" And then Jon would be like "Damn it Emile". Don't know why but that's just what I thought of, complete with their voices played out in my head. But hey, it's not like those voices tell me to do bad things...YET!
I think the pace of the videos are just fine. The Yoshi games have always been more about taking your time and exploring, that's why the stages don't have timers, unlike SMW1.
I'd say that this is a great middle ground. While you do know the general layout, the several little botched instances (like forgetting where some items were and running face-first into the bandit) do show that you aren't spoiling yourself to the game. My vote goes to keeping this method, it's pretty neat!
The bubbles actually have a silly glitch/trick you can do with them. If you blow them UP and jump into them while you're doing it you'll rocket up into the air.
7:20 Very late on this so my comment probably won't be seen anyway, but I highly doubt Yoshi not growing/shrinking WASN'T a technical decision; if I recall correctly, the SNES was able to do sprite scaling, so it shouldn't have been a problem.
I feel like this semi-blind run after all these years you've kept up till now is fine, really enjoyable so far despite the goof-ups :P So yeah, keep it up! :)
25:23 - Since Proton got 21 out of 20 red coins, I'm beginning to think that he thrives on glitches in his life, so much so, that Proton Jon's life is just one gigantic glitch.
Little fun fact: Kaboombas also appeared in Super Princess Peach. However, they were just called Cannons. Kind of on the nose for the naming there, huh, Nintendo?
I'm not too sure on what you'd like to do for this LP "practice/middle-base wise," because I think it's pretty fun & enjoyable to watch you play it as you remember it. Plus, it adds more of those moments where you're like "Well, I'm a liar." and "Oh wow, right! That's what you have to do!" Kind of thing. I know not everyone likes this from you, and prefers a more "this is here, here and here" LP. I think it's great so far and the cuts are perfect. They don't make it any less interesting, and it gets you to the point rather than just running around all crazy like (I'd honestly like to see that because I think it's fun watching someone play a game completely and just question wtf they're doing, but that's just me.) Also, what happened to take and egg, leave an egg!? Did the ritual die already!? =(
I think it's a wonderful thing, and you should continue with the map thing. It jogging your memory, even if slightly, will make it a much more enjoyable experience while maintaining the purpose of the lp.
The other middle ground is to watch the 100% TAS of the game. Sure it will spoil you pretty much everything but I think at the speed it's done and if you don't watch too closely it might works :)
Hey Jon, I just wanna mention something about Bandits real quick since I think you're getting close to where they start showing up. Did you know that if you hit a Bandit with eggs six times in a row you'll get a coin on the first three eggs and the last three will each give you a 1-up? It's a pretty decent way to get lives if you have an egg or enemy spawner nearby.
You did well on the Co-optional podcast. Some good moments there despite the audio issue. As for this video, I'm looking forward to 2-5 and see how you do on it.
there's a much harder maze later on, i think it were you have to go though pipes to find a key, but when you find key you have to kill a sluggy i think it might be sluggy the un-saven
I feel you still shouldn't practice. Part of the beat things about playing old games from your childhood that you haven't played in a while is remembering where everything is. It's almost like you get to play some of it again like it's a new game. :3
Yoshi shrinking and growing in the background would have been "mode 8". its mode 7 for the sprite layer instead of the background layer. The super Nintendo couldn't do mode 8 (which is technically not a technical term if you know what I mean) but the Sega Genesis could. that was the Genesis' strongest selling point. Remember sonic 3 sky sanctuary with the robots flying out of the Death Egg? They could have done a post processing trick though...
I AM HORRIBLY OFFENDED BECAUSE I SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION AND AM ALSO A CACTUS.
...I'm mostly depressed because typing with my spines is super hard. This took me three days.
Yes, depression suffering cacti with spine problems is a serious matter. I hope your spine is doing well, Mr. Cactus.
I can't believe you missed that door by one pixel, haha.
It's just how this game goes man. Apparently I missed a couple hidden item clouds the same way in earlier episodes.
However it wasn't one pixel, but one sprite. Big difference ;)
GODDAMMIT SPACEHAMSTER!!

That's ok, Jon, have fun on your trip. :)

Aww, no Take An Egg Leave An Egg?

weird...
'Cause it's Jon :D
Same. I think it's his sexy voice.
I think its because Jon openly admits he misses something or he actually says he thinks he might be missing something instead of pretending he's perfect.

It’s funny rewatching this after 5 years, Bigger Boo now has a different connotation.
13:14 if you wait long enough, another little cacti pops up behind the bigger cacti's head and they return back to bouncing. (which is adorable)
This is why Jon is my favorite LP'er, or even just UA-camr in general. He responds to the community and answers to criticism to try and improve. The mature yet funny attitude wasn't enough, apparently, and I respect that. You go, Jon.

The large boo's have a malicious smile, but the little boos just look like they want to give you a big hug. :)
Big as they get? have you not seen Boolosuss?
I was gonna point out the boo that chases you in New Super Mario Bros. 2. Sadly I cannot remember the name of that boo.
There's also Big Boo from the Mario Party games, both the Painting in Mario Party 4 and the Statue in Mario Party 2 are pretty big.
Didn't think of Luigi's Mansion, bizarrely enough, but looking at footage of him, I'm pretty sure Bigger Boo gets bigger than him before he dies.
*****
...Bigger Boo's just one ghost though.
Nice.
This new plan is working nicely. Keep winging it! The map is a good middle ground. Keep up the good work!
I think your idea of bringing up the map a day earlier is pretty sound and I really liked this episode.
Jon, I actually like you wondering around and getting every secret etc. since it shows all aspects of the game.
Before I'm done watching through 2-4 something I got to say, in level 2-2 for the last flower, you can either shoot an egg at it which you did first time, nice job, and my way of doing it, is to grab an enemy and then spit it out to the flower, also works. ...Cactus Jack. Okay, so which came first? Mick Foley or Yoshi's Island?
So awesome to see you posting regularly again jon - really enjoy your semi-exploratory "let's play"s
Most people don't think "Since the boss is a Boo you can hit with eggs, I can do it with the smaller ones" because it's a boss which means there must be a way to defeat it. Honestly I didn't know that until now either.
Good, I wasn't the only one who just fount out.
"Nothing says intimidating like adding -ger to the name of an enemy." What, like... "Booger?" Wait, thats...
I like the map memory jogging idea seems a fair balance and quick note frustrated Jon will forget to leave an egg at the end of the level
When I read the title and video description, the first thing I thought was "Boo-ger". Whoops!
Oh Lord, Jon, you actually got me with that message at the end!
It's probably worth mentioning that some rooms/levels in this game show all the coins with the "red" tinge of colour. I don't know why exactly, but it's something I noticed when playing through this a few months ago.
Jon, you should do a ground pound after a boss fight to try to see some of the glorious frames of the ground pound because the game freezes yoshi whilst the boss is in his death 'explosion'
Also if you didn't know already, on the world 4 boss, The red one (spoiler free), perform the final hit whilst the boss is in his falling over animation for a beautiful non-game-breaking glitch.

Good theory, but it doesn't explain why Yoshi still can't eat Boos even if he manages to sneak up behind them.
TheHellspawnHero
Can you sneak up on a boo? Like aren't they always faceing you as soon as you walk in the room?
Good point. Sure, in some other Mario games, they don't turn around right away, so it might be possible to get behind them and attack them if you're quick enough... but I don't think you can do that in this one.
I guess it depends on whether you're playing by 2D Mario rules or 3D Mario rules.
TheHellspawnHero
Hey other than this game Yoshi is too sacred to enter ghost houses. maybe Yoshi is afraid of things he cannot eat.
Every time Jon loses Baby Mario, he be yelling "Baby" like a scorned boyfriend.
Anyone else find it funny that he's fighting a ghost boss on the first of October?
Stage 2-5 is the first stage where the game introduces its first dosage of "think fast!" Thankfully, those stages are sparingly spread out in Yoshi's Island, but man oh man, they are a pain in ass to earn 100 points on.

I wouldn't say everything with newer mario games (or nintendo games in general) is super obvious. Secret exits especially are pretty damn well hidden.

PROTON JON: What kind of baby doesn't listen to a dinosaur?
FUTURE JON: All of them?
ME: Not even Barney?
I bow to your eggpertise Jon... it makes me want to play Yoshi's Island myself
How do I feel about 1-ups? They're my life!
Gustys aren't air ghosts, they're the ghosts of condoms past.
This is okay the way your doing it. It's good to refresh your memory a little. I like this middle ground.
The bubbles actually have a silly glitch/trick you can do with them. If you blow them UP and jump into them while you're doing it you'll rocket up into the air.
I think that could work, you're not practicing but it's just a little refresher.
The door's shy, so it hid while your back was turned.

29:00 That totally took me forever to notice when I was a kid too
7:20 Very late on this so my comment probably won't be seen anyway, but I highly doubt Yoshi not growing/shrinking WASN'T a technical decision; if I recall correctly, the SNES was able to do sprite scaling, so it shouldn't have been a problem.
Bandit has to wear a mask to hide his identity. Why? Because he was banned from Deathmatch for stealing kills.
3:49 Wow. Way to make an enemy move BACKWARDS. All these years and I just now noticed, I know.
Little fun fact: Kaboombas also appeared in Super Princess Peach. However, they were just called Cannons.
Kind of on the nose for the naming there, huh, Nintendo?
I have this feeling that on one Yoshi's Island video, we will be graced with a "DISAPPOINTED" at the end of the video, just for shits and giggles :P
They don't make it any less interesting, and it gets you to the point rather than just running around all crazy like (I'd honestly like to see that because I think it's fun watching someone play a game completely and just question wtf they're doing, but that's just me.)
Also, what happened to take and egg, leave an egg!? Did the ritual die already!? =(
I honestly think you'll get a more genuine experience if you do it 100% blind but the 2 day map glimpse works too
I think it's a wonderful thing, and you should continue with the map thing. It jogging your memory, even if slightly, will make it a much more enjoyable experience while maintaining the purpose of the lp.
The map idea doesn't sound bad.
So is "Take an Egg, Leave an Egg" not a thing anymore? I kinda liked that.
I somehow knew that 2-6's softblock secret would trip you up.
The other middle ground is to watch the 100% TAS of the game. Sure it will spoil you pretty much everything but I think at the speed it's done and if you don't watch too closely it might works :)
I'm happy with the pace of this episode
The map idea is definitely a good middle ground. I'm sure that mostly everyone else agrees that it is too.
Even better if you have access to a watermelon.
I must say ... I like what you put on the end slate. Good job.
...I always thought it was a nose too! You just blew my mind!
You did well on the Co-optional podcast. Some good moments there despite the audio issue.
As for this video, I'm looking forward to 2-5 and see how you do on it.
20:05 cactus jack? The awkward, long lost cousin of Jack frost
I think that looking at a map is fine... not that I really care. But for those that do, I don't really know how much of a help that it will be.
Well, there WAS that one glitch you didn't count earlier, so it evens out.
They could probably make Yoshi "shrink or grow." That's Mode 7. They probably didn't think of it.
there's a much harder maze later on, i think it were you have to go though pipes to find a key, but when you find key you have to kill a sluggy i think it might be sluggy the un-saven
I feel you still shouldn't practice. Part of the beat things about playing old games from your childhood that you haven't played in a while is remembering where everything is. It's almost like you get to play some of it again like it's a new game. :3
Didnt leave any eggs at the end of the levels in this episode. We took the eggs but didn't leave any qq
They could have done a post processing trick though...
teh maze has nothing on a certain loooooong cave that never ends that comes latter
I absolutely loved the 3D stuff going on in this game.
Maps are okay with me! I enjoyed this video, it gave me plenty of entertainment. I would love to see more done this way.
