Indeed. At this time, they knew the best way of programming on those old systems, but sadly, like you said, it came out at the end of the system's lifespan... However, GBC SF Alpha is definitely one of the best 8bit fighting games, a hidden gem!
Indeed, it's definitely one of the best 8bit fighting games. They managed it to include most of the original's content into this tiny cartridge, that's very impressive! It came out at the end of the GBC's lifespan, at this time they know exactly how to do!
The animation is amazing for a game on a device that is essentially a portable NES. With Capcom supporting the 3DS with the Game Boy Mega Man games recently, it would be a big mistake if they didn't release this for the 3DS Virtual Console.
its a big misconception that the gameboy color was just a 'portable NES' considering it has more than twice the clockspeed of the original NES (NES 1.79 MHz and GB Color with two speed modes at 4.19/8.38 MHz) not to mention the fact that it could present more colors on screen than the original NES (NES 46 to the GBColor's 56). Despite the smaller screen size, this system had many games that look like they could have been ported to the SNES or the PC Engine in their animations and sprite design. To me the GB Color is the best kept secret in handheld gaming in that there were many hidden gems for the system because it was so short lived due to being discontinued after only 5 years.
great animation considering the limitations. some of the music might get annoying after awhile. they were pretty ambitious in recreating those melodies, but some of it seems too forced.
yeah the audio is definitely the weak point here. which is interesting because usually it's design and fluidity and graphics that feel dated in old fighting games, if you expect 1 thing to be good it's the soundtrack
Well the sprites on SF2 gameboy where actually much more detailed than these alpha sprites. Makes me wonder if they could have done that level of detail for the sprites in this alpha version. Or did they have to make cuts for cart space/slowdown/color/etc?
@@jaywest3734 Yeah I like both. I owned the SF2 GB as a kid in the late 90's too and liked that. I can see that the GB can do better looking sprites like in SF2 GB but the cost is it will have a LOT less fps. Both are great games and I have that SSF2TR on gba as well and that is really really really good for a gba game.
I legit searched for this game on UA-cam after playing the game boy port of Street Fighter 2. It blows my mind that Street Fighter Alpha actually plays well.
@jdrhjr well the screen is 160x144 while the super nintendo version was up to 512x447. so big drop in detail. at least they do what the lynx did which was to zoom everything in so the characters look better but you can't tell what going on around you.
Impressive! I never played it, but it looks quite solid and it seems like the most of the original's content is present, it has great graphics considered the hardware as well. This game could be one of the best 8bit fighting games, I have to try it!
Virgin did a great number with this. It's no wonder they got the very unlikely high profile contracts that they did. It reminds me of Take Two with Max Payne
Nintendo always got the oddball alpha conversions lol, but really pushed their respected hardware to their limits: Alpha 2 on the SNES was as arcade perfect as a snes could ever be thought possible of pulling off and Alpha 3 on GBA made cuts in terms of ending sequences but added modes and characters!
Capcom: Hey let us just be more of an ass to Nintendo. I know the Nintendo 64 is out but to ignore that system even more lets say we release Street Fighter Alpha for Game Boy Color?
I dunno, I think it would be better than you might imagine. Nice chunky d-pad plus the N64 having six face buttons in two rows of three. Seems like it could actually control pretty good.
even king of fighters and fatal fury real bout series were converted to the Gameboy . I don't understand why they didn't do that on the Snes more powerful than gameboy color
The controls for this was better than the GBA Street Fighter Alpha 3. This allowed you to determine which of the 3 punches or 3 kicks you wanted to use by either tapping, pressing, or holding the kick or punch button. SFA3 GBA had weird combined button presses for the 3rd kick or punch. I'd love to see the Nintendo Switch use these controls for their Street Fighter games.
awesomeelitegamer you do it with the super game boy it’s and attachment to the Super Nintendo that lets you play game boy games you just record the tv once it’s hooked up
@AlirazaVideoGames Its a lot more smooth because the GBC's processor was a bit better, and the sprites are noticeably reduced in size. In the GB version the sprites were a much larger size so that took a toll on gameplay. I honestly don't know how Capcom approved the GB version, it was barely playable lol
Humorous LOL The original Gameboy could’ve had a better port similar to this actually had it been done properly in the first place. The biggest issue with the GB SF2 along with the Mortal Kombat titles is that for some dumb reason they decided to render ALL the graphics onto a background in software instead of actually use the sprite hardware. THIS is the primary reason why those games were slow, choppy, and in the case of MK1, borderline unplayable. Yeah, those games avoided sprite flicker and stuff because of that, but at the expense of pretty much everything else.
hold on, is this the game that each fighter fight their own rival as the final boss? it is arranged better than those kof games that you are forced to choose the team to enter those "hidden lore" stories
Not bad, but I think the deformed style featured on the Neo Geo Pocket Color did a much better job translating fighting games to limited portable hardware
Still don't know how fighting games are even possible on Game Boy or Game Boy Color, ya know, since they only have two buttons to work with and the original version used SIX.
The things these developers were doing late in these consoles's lifetimes were amazing.
That's cute

@@greensun1334 probably the best all things considering. GB Killer Instinct, MK 2 all pretty dope too
@@Shinobi33 yea, or the GB The King of Fighters games!
This came out in 1999...the GBC had been out for a year since then.
Wow. This iteration is very faithful to the arcade/console versions. I'm impressed.

The GBC is basically an NES on steroids
Narrator: they never did
@@stopthrm What do you think are some of the best games on the GBC that really show off what it was capable of?
Its amazing how well they got this to work. It's SFA proper, in your pocket.
no it isnt.
Its impressive for sure but calling it alpha proper is fucking absurd dude
@@NeutralGuyDoubleZero Then how the fuck should you call it, dude?

wow, the gameplay is fast and smooth, and the animations are great! What an amazing port.

fun fact, it has less loading time than the snes version of alpha 2.
It shouldn't have loading time...Because there isn't need of uncompressing images

Theres no loading screens on the gbc

It's different, this is a reconstruction of the game for another system, the SNES one was actually a port
better than the Mortal Kombat Game Boy game I had....
yuppp
Look up Mortal Kombat 2 for the Game Boy;it's a much better game, and graphics are CRAZY!
Mortal Kombat II on gameboy was good.
MK 2 was alright...
Aside the lack of multiplayer, this port is nothing short of amazing.
I imagine the data transfer rate and stability goes beyond a link cable haha. imagine though
Excellent video, as always.
This channel is the BEST on UA-cam for longplays!
Proof that an 8-bit Street Fighter was feasible all along
GBC is actually more powerful than the NES & GB in certain aspects. GBC didn't come out until 1998
Nah, it was feasible ONLY once the system was pushed to its limits, took years back then.
Unlike MK4 GBC edition
This was probably the best fighting game ever on original 8 bit Gameboy!!
this is the best fighting game on game boy color ever, I played this game for the first time!

Nah, that title goes to power quest
Is it possible to choose akuma/dan/bison etc on that version?

these graphics (despites the gloss from the 16 bit versions are gone,)are amezing, but the music and sound effects are terrible,
I remember Charlie's stage theme. Played this game around 2008. Birdie was dominating!!
I like the simplified Rose stage theme -sounds very nice.
How do they get 6 buttons out of 2? Is it how long you hold punch or kick
My first game on GBA using GBC catridge. Bring so much memories 😚
Sorry, how much damage from a Tiger Uppercut? 😮
How in the hell did the GB color manage to put this together!? its not laggy nor unresponsive it puurrrrfect!!
