I just read the plot of the game because of this comment, you're so right! Didn't realise how dark it was!! "The story is set in the year 2704, when the Alliance of Space-Faring Alien Races (ASFAR), of which Earth is a member, suddenly turns against Earth and their fleet ravages the planet, starting a war. The player flies a powerful starfighter, the TV-202, in a series of missions to defeat the enemy. In Episode 3, the player learns that a huge supercomputer known as Xenocidic Initiative (X.I.), located on Proxima Seven, is responsible for the war. Their final mission is to eliminate it. A hidden mission can take place after the main plot only in the CD ROM version where the player must investigate a sudden metamorphosis of an unknown nearby planet and destroy the force that changed the face of the planet. It is revealed here that this force drove a man named Sy Wickens into insanity, and how the X.I. Supercomputer had "accidentally" digitized Sy Wickens' persona"
@@starrrkkk Not to mention during the final battle with the super computer, you can hear him laughing and taunting you saying: "Come on, little man!". Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the build up for the finale was inspired by the Andross battle in the original Star Fox, since you had to go through a lot of tricky corridors to get to the boss. And then as you make your way out, you immediately end the level, like the planet was set to self destruct once the computer was destroyed.
@@starrrkkk Thanks a lot for writing the lore. When I played this in the shareware version, not only did I not care about the story (just wanted to have fun), I didn't speak English very well (foreign country here). So now a couple decades later it's interesting to finally read it.
can this game be played with a controller ? like a PS2 controller ? , thought I'd ask since I have 2 sony controllers 2 Joytech controllers and 1 pelican accessories controller .
@@gamepad3153 There are programs to use most ANY controller, even NES controller to play games on a PC. Don't remember any such programs' names, sorry..MotionInJoy my have been one but I don't guarantee anything.
I just use an Xbox One controller as it's easier to set up. All you need with that is Controller Companion, which unfortunately isn't free, but is effective at remapping keyboard inputs to buttons on a controller. Though it can be pretty awkward when it comes to mapping the start and back buttons or the menu and view buttons, due to how old PC games use enter and escape for different methods in menus and gameplay. Also, I don't know if it works for Dos Games, as all games that run in Dosbox are all linked to the Dosbox app itself.
Could you tell me which package you have to download off the site in order to play the game? And can it be used with windows, or just Mac? Either way is fine.
I miss the Tracker Module music in MOD, S3M, IT and XM format that I listened in games like Unreal, Crusader, Deus Ex, Age of Wonders and several Demoscenes. And so far I haven't even seen indie games that have that kind of music, because I'm tired of hearing almost always 8-bit chiptune music.
@@hellbenderdescent Easy enough. In UnrealEd's Music Browser, import the module file of this track (should be available from a site, mirsoft.info or some other) and save it as .umx..then assign it for the map.
Oh and I UnrealEd's music browser only accepts so many format modules..I don't remember what and how many format modules it imports but .s3m surely was one of them.
Shadow Heart I listened to some other tracks from the game and you can clearly hear the signature clipping sound of a looping sample. It sounds like they built all the songs from looped samples as opposed to General Midi instruments.
I know I'm posting this way after you asked but I thought I'd comment anyway. This game uses tracker modules as opposed to MIDI files. Cody R was right, the tracker module files contain a set of digital samples, and the code to play them at the right pitch and volume and to apply some simple effects like vibrato etc. Tracker music was way more common in Amiga games, I guess because it was longer before the average PC got decent digital sound capabilities, but I think it sounds better than MIDI as the musician has way more control of the exact sound, and isn't at the whim of whatever MIDI playback the users sound card has.
ArcturusDeluxe you mean MODS? oh mods sound so good! lmao but i never learned to make songs on them.. amazing amazing sound.. beats midi so much that i consider mods as professional quality audio altenrative ... now i really have to google for htem .. dangit you sparked an old fuse
Yeah mods. I dunno if I'd say they were always professional quality, most mods were made during the 90s and most of the samples used were fairly low quality to fit onto a disk or send over dial-up or whatever. But for the time, there were definitely some impressive tunes made. If you haven't played Unreal, Unreal Tournament or Deus Ex I recommend checking those out as they have excellent tracker mod soundtracks. For standalone tunes, Modarchive is a great site for those.
This song has been stuck in my head for at least 20 years....I'm so glad I finally utilized this, what do you call it, internet machine?
+lebebop Mine too, I can't get it out of my head
Same here. :)
Can't believe i played this in the hot summer of '95, feels like yesterday, very nice game
I will never forget this track. So influential on my taste in music!
I'd love to see a remake of this. It's a fantastic game with a darker lore than you'd expect!
