  • I take the newly built ladder out to the cliff, with some firewood and odds and ends, to stay the night for my first sleep in the loft. Luna is with me, so I wanna take her on some fun adventures too, taking advantage of the fact that there is no snow there. Woooo hooooo!!
I’ll show you some places on the property in this video, and also start working on adding structural integrity to the loft. But between this and the ladder set up/install I’m feeling like I need to move on from this - it’s time to walk away from the inside of the cabin and start on something else. I’m pretty sure siding is next on the list. 😁
Thanks for watching and see you in the next one!
    M 💝💝
(Ps - I do think the stove top fan did help distribute the heat more evenly throughout the cabin. Thought the outside temps were warmer than my last visit, the cabin was more comfortable this time. I was very warm in the loft, and the morning temperature inside was about 8 degrees Celsius with outside being about -5 Celsius)

Consulting a Qualified Engineer about the slide and swing ladder is a great idea. Their per hour charge maybe be lowed by suppling apple pie.
Clifford as the Summer cabin is a great idea and I would rather have a cargo net underneath out of the view to catch the odd skill saw and other flying things. The Meadow build will have another awesome Winter view. Gosh you are going to be busy seeing your friends Clifford and Meadow. Make sure you leave enough quality time with Steve.

I think the ladder looks great in the cabin. I think you should go with a metal rail with rollers so you can slide it out to use it and then slide it back to store it away up against the bottom of the loft. you can always take a cut off from your wood mill with the live edge and attach it to the side of the loft that you can see so it matches the live edge of the ladder. really love the view you have of the lake from up there. its very beautiful. also I wish you would put some railing on your deck so you won't fall off by accident.

I would take a metal pipe and mount it underneath the bed at the end. Then, I would make two holes in the long wooden parts of the ladder and thread them onto the pipe back and forth. When the ladder is not needed, you can slide it completely under the bed, pushing it upward where the end is secured to the ceiling with a buckle. Simple but effective 😅

Hi Michelle, maybe attach a swivel hinge to the right side of the ladder at the top so that it will pull back and also move to the left. That way you could just swing it out of your way and hook it on the left side. It also would look like a railing for the loft when it was up.

For the loft ladder you can put a 2x6 against the wall under the loft and out past it to allow the ladder to slide. Add a 2x6 on the left and right side. Drill a hole for the solid rod that will act as the hinge for the ladder. Drill two holes at the top of the ladder. The basic look would be like a towel rack in a sense.

An idea you might consider: Cconvert the ladder to a "library ladder" with a bar across the top and wheels on the bottom so it could be moved side to side.. I think you made the correct decision to forgo the steel plates to connect the boards in your loft. But you may still want to keep them apart orherwise. Try cutting 4 small blocks like 1" x 3" and lay them between the boards 20" in from each end. You'll still have sufficient open space for air and your mattress pad will keep them in place for the most part. This will also allow for contraction or expansion of the long boards. Also, look into library ladder rails for your new ladder.

Michy, use those dock supports to hook the ladder up with pins or long bolts. Mount those above the window. Put it on the side above the window. Use a pulley mounted to the ceiling and a rope to pull it up out of the way if you have enough room to do so. Put a cleat to tie the rope up and hold the ladder out of the way when not in use. Spray bleach on the wood to kill the mold. We hope you don't fall off the porch. Be Safe !

How about cutting the ladder in half and hinge it to fold when you want to put it out of the way like an attic ladder. The metal brackets off of the old dock could be a pivot point at the top of the ladder. Or make a spot along the wall where you can attach the ladder to the wall vertically out of the way.
The view up there is spectacular. Thanks for the episode.

HI Michelle. The ladder turned out to look really nice. A thought is to use the dock hinges and hinge the ladder to the wall caps/beam run it parallel to the bed like you wanted and use a pulley and cable to lift it out of the way. Might work the way you wanted. I personally like the idea of the library ladder someone else mentioned. Brackets on the top with a steel rail and wheels on the bottom. It showcases the ladder and can be moved out of the way as needed. Thing is, we're not there to experience the space and not sure if either one is suitable. As far as the loft deck goes, I would put a strip of wood or steel angle under the boards on the side where the groove is cut in the cross beam. That's your weak spot. It will give some margin of safety for the boards sagging or shrinking. The top boards you are adding will spread the load out more but won't prevent the boards from slipping out of the groove. So now the butt kisses....I'm blown away by your achievements, tenacity and energy...and of course your eyes. Bravo. Take care.

Just another suggestion on the ladder. Put it on a pulley System that you could raise, so it's right out of the way. Having it attached to the side of the loft. If the ladder is too long you could hinge it In the middle and fold it up out of the way as well.

I had an idea, hinge or pin with a rod at the top, in the sideways position . Then to lift it up and down you could use small block and tackle type pully system at the bottom edge and attach it to the ceiling rafter. That way it would be totally out of your way during the day. Those small block and tackle pully systems can be bought at Princess Auto for cheap. Just a thought.

Continue trusting your artistic instinct when it comes form and function, its working very well. As for the ash tray/pot, I hand form copper and would be happy to hammer something out for you. I think that would be kinda neat. I feel very much at peace watching. Thanks from just South of Pittsburgh...

Just an Idea for your stairs/ladder. You could install hinges on the top rails and a pulley to raise the ladder when not in use.

Hey Michelle , maybe some brackets either below or on the front of your cabin loft would help hang your ladder out of the way.
I'm a sailor, so when looking at your sleeping loft, I immediately thought of a "Lee Cloth" installed when sleeping.

The ladder matches your cabin perfectly! Anyone who's watched a few of your vids knows your innate ability at producing gorgeous decor.
I love your idea of the ladder being parallel to the loft. So much easier to use and in 30 years, the older you will thank you.
Thanks for taking everyone with you on your journey, MG! 😊

Excellent job on the ladder & by the way nothing has to match just do it how you wanna do it, I was thinking the exact same thing about your loft ladder as you were building the loft hang from some sort slider mechanism and raise and tuck it out of the way, nice place & good job

When you are laying there and it's all quiet looking at the stars relaxation of your mind and soul thinking how much that you did to get to this point and it's all worth it a very good job🎉❤ well done now it's time to have a couple of glasses of wine and celebrate your achievements😂❤ always like seeing video of your family and the playing around that's because they are happy in life and you and Steve make that possible😂❤❤ so thank you for the video I will see you on the next one

Hope you enjoyed your first all nighter!! And as far the ladder goes I like it where you have it and since your not "living" out there I would think it's really not in the way. As heavy as it is I would think it would be a pain in the ars to move it all the time. It sure looks heavy and as beautiful as it is it's really a wonderful decorative piece! And next year you can put pine on it from the land for Christmas!!!

Must have had some mild weather, I see much of the snow has melted since your last video. I'm green with envy. What a stunning sleeping spot you have, and to wake up to that view. Oh my goodness! As someone else mentioned you could put the ladder verticle with a rail on the loft and wheels, but that would make your steps probably slopped to much forward, since you have them level when the ladder is leaning back. Awesome job!

Enchanting is the only word I can think of to describe this next in a long series of vids as you build your won't-fal-l-oft. Who can resist the urge to be with you through your thinking; at least in a mental state? I hope you are happy that you left that tree on the left side of your vista. What a beautiful person you are! -Curt
