Steel Frame Workbench - Shipping Container Shop - How To
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 вер 2024
- Working on the heavy duty steel frame workbench build for the shipping container shop. Construction is very basic and might be a good start for anyone thinking about how to build a workbench.
I welded the steel frame for added durability but isn't necessary for some just looking for something really basic. Next on the shop project list - shelving and wall storage!
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching! Joe

For those interested in the Forney multiprocess welder I use, here is a link. Forney sells welders, plasma cutters and just about any other metal working tool you can imagine!

Nice bench. I use ur videos with ur daughter to encourage my daughter to spend time in the shop making bird houses.
Awesome! that is good time spent with her! My daughter likes coming in and helping... so long as I don't have loud things going lol
On another quick note cuz I'm a PROUD Moma, my daughter starts Monday as a Firefighter in Kilgore, TX! My little nut didn't fall far from the tree! LOL!
That place is well built out now. Looks great!
thanks Bruce! Now I just have to move in to that side of of the shop :)
Nice and simple.Just the way I like it. I like the way you incorporate the steel into these builds. I wish I had a wire welder so I could do some of this stuff. A welder doesn't do well in a wood shop. As always your daughter improves the show. Keep it up.
Thanks Mike! I enjoy bridging them together as well :D I can't recommend getting yourself a welder enough.. if for nothing than small repairs and little odd projects. I do almost all of my welding outside and away from anything flammable (totally agree on welding in the woodshop being a bad idea)
and yes, my little baby just brightens up my day!!!
Your shop is first rate, and your little helper is even better 👏👏👍👍👍❤❤
thanks tom! I totally agree on the second part ! :D
You can never have too many workbenches! That aluminum trough/tray is genius.
lol... yes! i tend to be a 'pile maker' during projects... so lots of bench space is gonna be necessary as i get moved in her fully
Another great project Joe, I pretty much wouldn’t worry about what anyone thinks about things you say. 👍🏻
LOL... :D
😮 Bellisimo, Que hombre tan intelligente! Joe you can say, "pretty much" a 100 times per episode and those that know how to love your hard work, and intelligence will not be bothered. The haters will always find something to dislike, Ignore them! You keep shining your light 💎 Stay blessed! ☺👍
Thank you Autumn! It's folks like you who I care to hear from mostly :D
I love hearing that something might have given someone an idea or a bit of inspiration for something that they're doing! The trolls just exist regardless of how nicely you try say things...lol.... I laugh now about the thumbs downs I get in the first minute or so of the video getting posted...lol... they hadn't even seen more than 30 seconds of the video. But those are just the unhappy people. I care way more about the good people and interactions I have here... i get ideas and inspirations from talking with you guys and I hope I give a few back in the videos :)
Good work keep it up, DIY tubers are my favs, you get all sorts of different ideas from different people and we all grow together, keep it up bro!!
Beautiful bench. I like the way you combine the wood and metal. You make it look so easy. If you are going to make a video on the shelves why wont you use sliding doors to keep dust out & it'll be a bonus that they won't be protruding your limited space. All the best and keep safe.
thanks Dylan! I really have enjoyed incorporating it into my projects a lot... especially when I got the scrap steel for super cheap at a scrap sale (woohoo!) As for the shelves... I like the sliding idea... but I may have already trimmed them out...lol.. still thinking about options though... stay tuned ;)
I like the addition of the trough along the back of the bench. It's always good to have a place you can set pencils/screws/whatever in the middle of a project without losing them.
Very clean looking and an efficient use of space. Great job!
thanks KC! I've enjoyed figuring this space out... still needs development but coming along:)
Yes please for the shelving video!
Sounds like I'm going to do a shelving video... lol ;)
Great work! Pocket holes are very strong! No need to waste time and money by pin nailing!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 and yes please on wall cabinet vid
I took clips but wanted to see if there was any interest... leaning towards it now :)
Major shop envy! And yes, pretty much 😉 do anything you can to keep mice and vermin out.. you know what that can look like!
You’re speech is excellent, you pronounce everything clearly and correctly without rush. Keep it up exactly how you have been! Pretty much unique to you! Love it!
thanks Steff! I appreciate that a lot... I'm not a natural speaker but i just try and be myself :D
and those rats and mice are a huge concern of mine because the last thing I want to do is open a drawer to a nest of babies...lol!!!
I like your humor Joe. It’s looking great. Thank you for sharing your amazing video. God bless you and your family
lol... I have learned to be able to laugh at myself because my jokes are terrible... but sometimes folks will laugh at them because I laugh first ;)
I think now its turned out to be your dream shipping container shop..great work man..keep it up..
thanks! yes, it has become a pretty darn nice place for me to make things :)
homesteadonomics yup..
Those are beautiful pieces of furniture that I would put in my home office or bedroom any day. Warms my heart to see you teaching your precious one the tools of the trade.
I pretty much look forward to your videos.
Very well done.
LOL! thanks Cliff :)
Once again, nice work! I didn’t even need another work bench, but I picked up a couple of good tricks.
thanks EC! haha... me too!
Beautiful bench, your daughter did a great job.
Thanks, she is the best helper this dad could ask for :)
Beautiful Work bench and you make it look easy to build..
thanks so much Jofher!
I Love how you interact with your daughter explaining/showibg her how things work...my Dad did the same with me & I grew up very self-sufficient & one of the 1st females hired as a Houston Firefighter! Keep up the GREAT WORK!
Thank you Linda! That is one of my goals... I want her to grow up to be whatever she wants but in the process I want to give her the skills to be the most capable girl she can be! So awesome to hear about you and your Dad and that you worked for HFD! You still there? I work as a FF out here :)
I knew you were a firefighter...I've watched, and thoroughly enjoyed, ALL your videos & on a few of them I noticed your firefighter T-shirt! Retired from HFD in '06.
Well thank you for signing up! Especially when you did... I know the fire service hasn't always been the easiest for females to exist in. Definitely better now I think, from the stories I've heard. My department is relatively young and we've always had great respect for our female partners :)
I'll say it was tough...it took me 12 years to finally get hired in 1990...but I absolutely loved my career as a Houston Firefighter! I'm glad that your department looks favorably upon female firefighters because like I've always said...if they can do the job, let them! Remind your Brothers that every female firefighter could be someone sister, wife, daughter, etc and they deserve respect just like any Brother. Be Safe & Keep Up The GREAT Work!
Wow! The shop is really coming along nicely. It's functional and really looks good. The mixture of wood and metal is a great look and will serve you well for years.
thanks for checking it out LB! I'm really excited to getting it close to functional... as it stands now most of my tools are still in the garage, as I've been waiting to do the big move until the benches and shelves were all done so I could spend a couple of days moving everything in... but kinda dreading the move as I've got some serious mess to sort through...lol
Pretty Much that’s awesome and I’m doing the same thing soon. Great job man. Watched all the videos of the build. Only thing I’m going to complain about is Just pop in some dimensions as your building. Really nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Vic
thanks Vic! it's been a fun project... and yes, I tend to not put dimensions of projects because I figure everyone is gonna need different sizes of cabinets, shelves etc based on their space (ie.. if these were in my garage they'd be deeper)... but with that said I think once I'm moved in I'll do an overview on the set up and talk about the dimensions and what I would change with each specific piece (more, less, etc,.) :)
Love your humor and amazing video
thanks Zach! I'm full of bad jokes but sometimes still get laughs because I start laughing first at my jokes :D
I really like this new bench a lot. The metal framing and clear coated wood just make it look 1st class. The sheet metal on the back is a good idea and I wish I had done something like that myself. Thanks for sharing this.
thanks John! those scraps were just begging to be used on a workbench project :D
Great video.. Drawers are simple yet sturdy...getting ready to build a similar table...greetings from Douglas Az..
thanks PS! great to hear from a local to me :)
Great project. I pretty much want to thank you for sharing your great ideas.
:D thanks OW!
Anougher great project, your shop came out awesome !! A lot of storage and work space.
thank you Raymond! It has a bit to go but I'm really liking it so far:)
You should build one of those shufflepuck bowling things for outside as a game table.
those welding skills...are great to have.
yes, for sure! it's been really beneficial for lots of things. and not too hard to learn either. I think the 'arc' thing is what scares most from getting into it..but once they try it, a lot of poeplend up loving it!
I really like your workbench with metal legs. It’s awesome that you have the ability to fabricate onsite.
You could add a piece of measuring tape to the metal trough for quick measurements.
thats a great idea! stay tuned, you just might see me incorporate it... I'll have to check my tape measures to see if any can be repurposed :)
Man i love to watch your builds.! Good job.
thanks Niki!
Wow you made the drawers super flush with the work table. Haha. I like that. Looks good!
thanks DT! yes, not a lot of 'inset' on those drawers :)
Great looking work space ✔️
thanks Julee! it's really coming along!
The bench looks tremendous and it is a great addition to the shop. Your basic construction techniques as you call them are perfect and the drawers look wonderful. I am pleased to see your helper in the shop. Kindest regards from a cold, wet and snowy UK.
Thanks Tony! Hope you are warm over there...would love to participate in some of that UK cool and wet weather... we are having a bout of freezing weather just right now... got the fireplace going too!
Shop is coming along awesome Joe! 👍
I'm excited for sure... been working with most of my tools still in the garage and walking back and forth between projects. lol... I know it sounds crazy but I want to have the space developed before doing the BIG move in
I think it's "pretty much" perfect! Excellent work; as always!
haha.. thanks Mark!
That trough in the bench is a great idea! (had to look up how to spell "trough" to be honest😁) Nice to see your helper in the shop, too.🎀
lol... if you wouldn't have then I WOULD have had to look it up (so thanks :) and yes, she is my best little helper.. so long as it doesn't get too loud that is...lol
We love shop vídeos, never get tired of them !
Great! there will probably be many more in the future :D
homesteadonomics every maker loves shop organization and improvement, shop videos are inspirational and tutorial, I'll be building workbenches soon, and I'm definitely going to use some tips I got from your videos!
I agree... organization is definitely my weak point... the only reason this looks clean is that I haven't moved in to this side of the shop yet...lol
The shop is looking awesome. It is well laid out. I really enjoy your channel.
One thought for sound control is maybe hang panels of cloth between the lights to absorb echo. I don't think they don't have to be very big or to hang low.
I'm going to see how the rest of the cabinets that I add help (with the contents on shelving too)... and after that I'll see how it has changed. But I'll likely end up trying panels at some point too. As well as some rubber/foam mats for the floor (for comfort mostly;)
The end was way too smoooth!! :D
lol... only 2 takes to get it ;)
Man the shop is looking great! I really like it. Great work.
Thanks Ben! It's really come quite a long ways from that original pink-red faded paint container
VERY NICE PROJECT
thanks Colin!!!
Awesome stuff as always! Got to have a place to work before you can work! (Which is why I'm not getting much done because my place to work is still a disaster because I can't get what I need built because I don't have a place for building to create the space needed to build!) Cheers!
Lol...I switched over to my phone just so I could use imogees for the laughing 😂 😆 😝 faces. That is a true statement of ever I heard on😀👍🏻🤣
Now that's funny that you had to switch just for the laughing faces (=
you're worth it Steve! :)
I think this is a great addition to the shipping container shop. The trough at the back is something I would love on any workspace. Glad you found more use for the drawer pulls- even though you didn't love making them for the first set of drawers. Nice!!
LOL... drawer pulls for days! btw... speaking of that I may need your services picking up some ikea stuff.... free breakfast for you ;)
Just let me know what you want me to pick up. :)
Nice work Joe! Love the steel frames on your benches. BTW - Your welding skills are rock solid!
thanks Eric! metal has become a fast growing passion of mine... just love working with it and incorporating it into the projects:)
I really like the mix of steel and wood on the bench, nice job! You should incorporate some steel on those upper cabinets also, it would look nice
hmmm.... that sounds interesting... don't know if it will make it on these (they might be further along than what was in the video;)... but maybe the next set of shelves :)
homesteadonomics if you haven't done the doors yet, steel wrapped doors would look cool
I'm thinking steel doors are gonna be a definite.. but they'll likely go on a cabinet just to the left of those shelves... the shelves might have already been face framed ...lol
Much appreciate the videos. How about a little bio on your background. Were you in the military. How did you learn what you know? Where did you grow up. Etc. Thanks.
I have done some really old QA videos that talked about that but I may have to do an updated series as they are pretty grainy and have terrible sound :)
as to your questions... no military (day job as a FF)... I learned from my dad, grandpa, father in law... and mostly through tinkering with things and self teaching (but those guys helped instill the desire to learn :)
Growing up... all over the US :)
That work space looks amazing..
thnaks Fuentes! I'm excited it's getting so close to finished :D
That aluminium strip is a great idea!
Thanks Robin! I once had a rugby coach pronounce aluminum as you did...and some guys said you weren't supposed to say it like that... then he informed us that the inventor/discoverer actually had the "ium" at the end originally...so you are correct sir! :) I still don't know why we pronounce it different in north america (can, us, mx)
That is a great looking bench!
thanks HC46!
That's an awesome work bench. Love these project videos. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
Great skill-set. Organized.👍
thanks! Its a weak point of mine so that's why Im spending such an effort to make it as functional and organized as i can before I move everything in :)
Pretty much a great video as usual. Funny because my son and I say pretty much all the time, lol
I pretty much think you are pretty much awesome ! I pretty much love the container shop, and the pretty much new workbenches are pretty much cool ! I pretty much would not worry about the "pretty much" haters... They pretty much blow... Pretty much... That's pretty much all I've got... LOL... Hope you had a pretty much great weekend !!! Peace (pretty much)...
pretty much thank you Mark! lol... yes, it's pretty much come into it's own since the pretty much faded pink/red container that it pretty much started as.....LOL
(btw.. i got your message but just haven't had time to respond yet... will be coming )
Heyas Joe ! Thanks ! And no worries...
My dad had a girlie calendar from the 50s over his workbench. He said it kept that noise down. . He also said Jack Daniels was toothache medicine.
:-)
hmmm... I may have to try the noise cancelling device....lol... but I don't think my girls would like it;) The toothache medicine may have made it's way in a couple times :)
Very good and solid
I “pretty much” thought it was a great video. Keep being awesome.
:D thanks!!!
Haha ya. That's pretty much how it's going to be. 👍
LOL... :D
That looks amazing, love it!
That's an awesome shop! I wish I could make my shop so organized...
Yet another great project! Nice work, Joe. Im actually planing on making a similar workbench, real simple, but with castors to roll it around and metal on top, to weld
thanks!! I think a rolling workbench like that would be a great option! I use mine to weld as well as do lots of other projects on too!
As always, looks great. I love the workshop, such a functional small space.
Thanks Terry! It's coming along... still need to move in to this side of the shop (why its' still so clean...LOL)
Pretty much......great work !
thats "pretty much" a thank you too ;D
Love that shop! Nice job
I pretty much think your a genius!!! Great work
lol... thank you... but I'm FAR from that ;)
Прекрасная работа!
Another nice job.
thanks Jody!
You never disappoint! Great work!
thanks Anthony!
homesteadonomics Of course! 👌🏻
Pretty much a good vid! Keep em coming. We pretty much watch whatever you make!
:D thanks John!
It's pretty much awesome, Hey HD, as always, great build. Like checking out your vids and work. I don't have the space but you are an inspiration fill with ideas. Thanks.
Thanks so much VG! I appreciate it...I like to create and see what works and what doesn't!
btw.. got your message and will respond soon :)
Joe
Thanks Joe 😊
nice bench, i loved it
Great looking cabinet - you can NEVER have too much storage! Keep up the great work! :)
good job as always
thank you OTE!
You can always use the magic screen door and cut them up and use them for your cabinets
oh oh... now you're gonna put more ideas in my head ;)
Thank you, very much.
Looking good !!! Just think in 10 years you can do a video on restoring everything.
LOL... I hope they won't need too much restoration :)
Joe you need to design a “Pretty Much” T-shirt!
hmmmm I might have to talk to my friend monica about that one ;)
+homesteadonomics, "Pretty much! 👍"
Pretty pretty much
Very good proyect ¡¡¡¡¡¡
Great job as always, Joe. Thanks for sharing and giving me some great ideas.
thanks Daniel! ... and I get a lot of great ideas from you guys are your comments too :D
(I have like 4 great ideas regarding future cabinets just from these comments... not to decide on which one...LOL)
You are a master builder, sir.
thank you Tina! I'm trying to get better with each one :)
It looks really nice.
thanks Joseph :)
Pretty darn NICE Joe!!! I have a feeling you're going to need a trailer stretcher before long...lol. 😂Take care, God Bless my friend!
lol.... yes, I probably should have kept more than half of the orig. 40ft container for the shop. An extra 5 ft would have been nice :)
homesteadonomics , you really have utilized the space that you do have I wish I had half that space, maybe one day. Nice work!!!
браво!
Wow...your shop is getting respectably crowded! I really like this series!
Have you considered some kind of dust collection for it?
I know you have the fan & can open the end...but a dust/particle collector may keep it clean...pretty much :)
LOL... we for now the dust collection is all about putting on the compressor and blowing it out the end doors...not sure If I'll get a legit one put in... but if I did I'd probably route the ducting in the rafter space above :)
Ah...kewl beans!
Another great project! I like the idea of the steel frame. Did you catch the Cats on Saturday? Bear Down!
hey Henry! I did see the game! this season has been a real interesting one for sure... but I think the talent and potential we have might just be the potential for making it all the way this year :D Bear Down!!!!!
you makes everything looks so so easy...awesome as always
thanks Ady!
The workshop just looks awesome...but what did that poor tape measure ever do to you??? He he he!! 👍
lol... I needed to assert who's boss to those tapes before they got too big for their britches ;)
Very cool, thanks for the video
like it alot
thanks harley!
Awesome again.
thanks Cary!
nice work as usual Joe, never noticed the "pretty much" before, probably notice it now.
lol... now I guess I shouldn't have said it...lol ... you'll be counting ;) haha
after all this time, i cant remember you ever said your name. i just wanna stop talking about "this guy from yt" or "arizona handyman".
great show, keep it up!
oh, it's Joe. my bad.
lol... you got it. :) I know I never really said it verbally except for like one or two times I think. I guess its the "mystique"...lol jk
Pretty much looks great! :p thanks for sharing
thanks Thomas! :)
