    Thank you for acknowledging this. It is really distressing when we comment on social media about not being able to be vegan, even though we would like to, due to severe IBS. People tear us to shreds, even though they have zero clue what IBS is about or what our restrictions are.
    It's fine for them, eating all those delicious vegan foods at home and in restaurants. I would absolutely love to be able to eat them too - but unfortunately vegan menus are actually the worst for IBS due to the high presence of gluten, onions, garlic, pulses, legumes and so many fruits and vegetables that we can't eat. Usually I can't even find a snack in a store that I can eat on the go.
    The sad thing is that animal products are the ones that do not make us feel terrible. And even finding ethical animal products is difficult if you don't live in a big rich city in the west :(

      So strange I have ibs and I went vegan the last couple weeks and I've literally felt like I am dying. I had no idea this could be a problem I feel awful about eating meat and dairy and just eating it makes me feel like I'm a terrible person but my body is freaking out right now eating only vegan.

    It’s so hard being plant based
    When ur bulking clean having 220g of protein at least 3000kcal a day with a nut allergy you can only have so many supplements
    You actually need something like lean meats say chicken or turkey

    I have nut allergies (all, except peanut which is technically legume) and seed allergies. I found that sunflower seeds (can have those) are a great replacement for things like almond flour. Just take a coffee bean grinder and grind the seeds with that. You get sunflower flour with the same texture and nutritional values as almond flour ^^

    Gosh.....You know, i always want to be a full vegan forever, always. But with a soy, wheat, coconut, oral allergy syndrom( so a lot of fruits), most spices and also a chronic oesophagitis AND IBS. I suffered 5 long years because i was stubborn, didn't wanna give up my vegan diet. But the list of food i can't eat is insane. Then when i hit the menopause, the vegan diet made my thyroid function decrease and i was close to have the meds for it. It's very common among women after 45 ,as my vegan dietician told me, to have thyroid issues when on a vegan diet. My hair fell, i suffered muscle loss, i had heart palpitations at night, weakness, because my bowels could not process the food i was eating. I did the FODMAP protocol supervised by my doctor and my dietician 4 times, but can't reintroduce a thing. I'd have to basically stick to phase one forever. This year winter was very long and i felt the worst depression ever, and that's when i was tired of feeling bloated, farting 24 hours a day, i even lost my job because of my IBS, can you imagine that? At my age? I was so done with feeling hungry all the time. Finally, it's those test results about low iron, low b12, low magnesium that made me decide i had enough. I may want to eat like this but my body doesn't. My health has improved, thyroid went back up normal and i'm now a part time vegan. I still can't eat meat, probably won't, but i have fish and greek yugurt, eggs. It changed everything for me. It's sad, i am angry with my body, but i just couldn't take the pain no more, and the social exclusions from all those farts, and my depressive moods because of it. I'm glad i did my part, but now i gotta chose my well being over animal. Thank you for showing others there's a half-way. It's very kind. Kinder than i've seen on reddit and other places.

    Great idea for a video! I first got ibs while aftef becoming vegan, I gained weight but felt constantly ill then followed the fodmap diet for 8 months (subscribed to you for a while ^.^) as well as seeing a dietician. The outcome was that I found I am VERY intolerant to gluten, most oligosacs, especially our worst enemy onions as well as lots of lentils and pulses. I have tried to reintroduce them multiple times but it just end up unwell. My approach is to still avoid meat as I've been veggie for so long and continue to have all vegan products except eggs, including in a couple of quorn products like the mince or gf sausages. It makes me feel better about my impact, still saddens me a little but obviously more people attempting veganism and sustainability imperfectly is more worthwhile than a few being perfect 🤗❤ Thanks for all the content you produce and the wonderful fb group Carrie it's really takes the edge off when you feel ill being able to contact others who feel the same!

    Can someone explain how being fully vegan helps the environment? I can see how cutting out meat helps with water consumption but I don't think being vegan is equally better. My confusion stems from the fact that vegan foods come wrapped in plastic and packaging that ends up in the land fill. I always see Vegans saying that it's better but I think it's the same amount of waste as eating meat because of all the single use waste that ends up in the trash. Can someone tell me of I'm wrong or looking at it in a different way?

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  5 років тому +17

      Good question. Most vegans I know actively try to avoid single-use plastic, but there has been a lot of marketing around new vegan processed foods in the past couple of years as more and more people decide to eat less animal-based products. So it's not really related to being an environmental-vegan.
      The bigger issue is that while plastic is an easy problem to see and therefore understand, the catastrophic climate change we are experiencing is down to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Because livelock has to be fed for months to years, depending on the species, for them to eventually become a small amount of food for humans to eat, the resources used and the resultant byproducts actually have a massive impact on the planet compared to the same amount of plant-based food, which we can eat directly.
      Resources required to make an animal-based product: the water they drink, water to grow GM soy crops, pesticides and insecticides for these non-human standard crops, huge amounts of land to grow these crops - majority of deforestation, even more land if grass-fed, ships to transport the feed and livestock internationally, then this GM soy to feed the cows, prophylactic antibiotics.
      Byproducts: methane from their farts and fermenting waste - the most potent greenhouse gas, CO2 from fuel use, toxic runoff from the waste into our waters, which cause vast dead zones in the ocean
      I'd recommend reading through this study as it's the comprehensive to date: www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/may/31/avoiding-meat-and-dairy-is-single-biggest-way-to-reduce-your-impact-on-earth

    • @tic857
      @tic857 3 роки тому +1

      I chose sustainability and reduction of waste and greenwitch aesthetic when it comes to my life style, because I can't go fully vegetarian or vegan due to nut, soy, legume and a number of fruit allergies. And I was never on some plant based trains because of the deforestation and water issues for monoculture crops, or forcing farmers to plant common food that don't grow well on their land and not finding a market for the crop that does grow well. At the end of the day, to me, you can't win with a diet alone. I went bagless, buy bulk of certain produce, repair clothes when I can, save all my bones and vegetable cuts for soup, I'll buy "damaged" produce if available, cuts that are "undesirable" like bones, feet, ears, organs etc over the typical muscle. Because to me, it feels like I'm at least respecting more of the animal by using parts that most will ignore and would end up in the trash. I often will use the same batch of bones 3-4 times for broth and soup. And the bones go into the garden if I'm renting an area with a garden. And generally I only have a serving a meat once a day.
      I also make it an effort not to have a life style "for the animals" but to live with respect for the planet as a whole, that includes plants, fungi, animals, humans, insects, all of biodiversity. To me that mind set helps me keep flexible and not rigid so I can adjust and adapt to where I'm living and what foods and materials are available to me. It's also easier on my wallet because at the end of the day if I can buy something localish, and it will last me for a month, I'm going to buy that over the cruelty free, not local, "organic" and will only last me for less than 2 weeks. Especially if you factor in the time, gas, packaging, from delivery to the store then to my home.

      do you know which legumes? I would recommend rice flour, millet flour, sorghum, seeds as substitutes for anything that uses nuts. Can you eat black beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas? For fruits, have you tried rambutans, lychees, jackfruit, longans, sapota, guavas? Are you allergic to those fruits? Vegan or not, I suggest trying these to help with your allergies. For vegan milk, try banana milk if you aren't allergic to bananas, or rice milk, hemp milk, flax milk, coconut milk. Hopefully that helps, based on your answers to the questions I asked.

    I posted on a vegan subreddit how much I like vegan food because I’m severely allergic to dairy, even though I’m not vegan. Someone said, “Why aren’t you vegan?” I said that I was allergic to milk, gluten, bananas, spinach, pomegranates, pineapple, lemons, limes, kiwi, dragonfruit, star fruit, oranges, grapefruit, celery, agave, and others. They said, “Food allergies are no excuse.” I got about -60 upvotes on my comment, along with many vegans being upset with me. I didn’t get any positive feedback. I don’t know whether I can like vegans or not. They hate me.

    I am trying to go vegetarian, I have been super bloated since I started a week ago. It has caused me loads of pain and discomfort. We are used to eating alot of greens, so this was unexpected. We realise we are very lucky. We buy second hand as much as possible to save the planet. We grow some of our food. On our balcony. We also have a couple of fruit trees in it, and this captures carbon, so bonus. We also try to get local things. I came here looking for a way to handle the ibs I have since I have gone vegetarian but I stayed for the level headed approach.

    concerning the beef chicken comparison. i had that in university last semester and apparently for a cow to gain 1 kilo of mucle you have to feed it up to 10 kg of matter. while a chicken turns nearly all of the matter it gets into bodymass. so if you are in there primarely for the animal souls that you harm directly, yes beef is the smarter choice. but if it is the enviroment (also evil methan cow burps) and saving resourses , than eating the chicken is the more sensible choice. .... and well if you have to eat animal for health reasons than its eather chicken or actullay free roam grass fed beef. there it doesent really matter that the cow needs to eat so much in order to gain weight bcs ... well its not like you can eat the grass your self. so no extra resoursess are wasted here. the last point is guessed tho. bcs maybe the cows still take up resoursess somehow.

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  5 років тому +2

      There's no perfect solution, grass-fed cows use a huge amount of land and fart a lot too... and that's why we should all just be vegan haha. I wonder if the best option ( if you have to eat an animal product) would be eggs IF you can raise the hens yourself and feed them your food scraps. It's not a coincidence they're all female and produce an unnatural amount of eggs of course, but at least those particular chickens could have an okay time. Still not healthy though 🤔
