A few pointers: test BOTH outlets for power before opening and handling. One of them could be a switched outlet that is powered independently from the other. 2. Too much bare wire is exposed from the loop. Ideally, the insulation should end just before the screw head. 3. On the old receptacle, you can totally remove the screws to make freeing the loops much easier. 4. For the new receptacle, if the loops don't go under the screws easily try slightly backing the screws out (don't remove) this may get you the clearance you need. 5. Any unused screws should be tightened down. 6. Make sure the black wire goes to the brass colored screw, white to the silver colored screw. Don't assume the person before you did it correctly.

As simple as I thought it would be. Thank you. I have been waiting weeks for someone to help replace four old outlets in my place. Now I know I can do it myself.
Something important to remember: black wires (on the right) will typically wrap around under the screw first then over the top, so that when you tighten the screw clockwise, it tightens the wire more instead of loosening it. For the white and ground wires on the left, wires wrap over the screw then under because again screw tightens clockwise.
Thanks for the additional information. There have been several comments about the wiring. I just place it back the way I found it. And this wiring was done by the home builder. This is from a rental house and the tenants just moved out. There have been a lot of tips in the comments and now I can go back in and put some of that advice to use. Thanks for watching!

Great & helpful video. One of my sockets was not working properly. The top would not work, but the bottom one had power. I followed this video and when I removed the outlet from the wall, I noticed the top white wire was a little loose and not as tight. There were no signs of burnt, discoloration, or wear & tear. I made sure that loose screw was on snug/tight. It turned out to be the problem and it's working again.
You made me grow a pair; thanks for explaining with excellent tips tricks. I will get a tester and follow all your very clear instructions; thanks so much brother. Stay healthy and strong!!!
Yeah! Changing an outlet isn’t very difficult. I’m glad you found my tutorial! Just make sure the power is off before you start. No need to pay an electrician for this! Thanks for watching!
So a receptacle can go bad in time? This is normal? I’m bout to replace one that suddenly started buzzing & looks somewhat burnt. I hope there isn’t something else that caused this issue. That’s what I’m afraid of. Great video! Convinced me to just do it!
Great video, exactly what I needed to know in order to replace several outlets. I literally was going to start without turning off the breaker!! Glad I watched your video lmao
Saw in another video that any screws not being used are tightened to avoid contact with the metal box. Another point, that the ground opening on the socket should always be closest to the floor so if via gravity the plug loosens the ground connection is maintained till the plug falls out. This was the way he did it , but it needs reminding. The last time I had a receptacle turn black was a failed appliance plug, but certainly worthwhile testing and inspecting the wiring Also it seemed like he was changing a Kitchen outlet and here in Canada the top and bottom section of the socket in most kitchen outlets are separately wired with a 220 V lead 120 to top and 120 to bottom each outlet good for 15A You have to break and twist off the copper interconnection on the receptacle on the feed or hot side. The smaller slot on the front of the receptacle is the hot side. You'll notice that the two breakers for kitchen outlets are linked and move together. I'm not a professional, just an electronics, electrical, computer hobbyist.
This was very helpful. I'm a property manager & doing remodel, staging, interior design as well. But my electrician is put of reach & I needed to finish few things at few remodel properties I manage. One of the task is change outlet & switches to white. So, this was very helpful. Now I know, I don't have yo ge rocket science to do this!
Receptacles burn out mostly because they arc due to failing blade retention, which in turn results from heavy usage. So, replace with a commercial-grade unit that has more durable and positive blade retention. For a few dollars more, they'll last much longer, plus their back wire feature makes them easier and quicker to replace because you can avoid the entire finicky j-hook routine. Also, if the exposed wires are so long that they go past the receptacle, trim them back a little to reduce the risk of a short. This is especially important if the box is metal.
That is a good advice I just replaced mine a few minutes ago and it was easy but I bit tricky because of the wires were butt heads but I got them in there place Took me a hour to do that because of wiring or else it been 5 or 10 mins This video helped me out and a very special 15 year old girl a big shout out to She inspired me to do it myself I said what the heck a 15 year old girl can do so can I !!! Thank you for your video it was helpful however I have never done anything like this before so I was very nervous if you turn on the outlet after you replace it and it doesn't work if you get the wires mixed up could not burn up the outlet
I don’t think you will burn out the outlet but if your wiring is not correct you could damage the device you plug into it or worse. So if you’re not comfortable with this I would recommend getting a professional to help!
Thank you for this video! This looks so easy but for some reason even though you turn off the circuit breakers I'm still nervous about doing it. I'm going to have to replace it because I can't get anyone else to do it for me.
Yes thank you for making it so simple and to the point. This is the first time I've ever been able to find the products box to order from Amazon not even sure how I got there but I did. Thank you again.
You’re welcome! I’m really glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Hopefully you found where to buy the replacement outlets from my description. I try to list the parts I use there so viewers are able to find them. Also thanks for subscribing! I really appreciate it!
I spotted a few mistakes Mistake 1: You did not tighten the unused screw terminals! Mistake 2: You did not attach Ground, Neutral then Hot Mistake 3: You did not use a #1 Robertson screwdriver/bit Mistake 4: You didn't use an outlet tester. You are supposed to use an outlet tester (e.g. Fluke ST120+) to make sure outlets are working correctly Mistake 5: The outlet is not level! Mistake 6: There was too much insulation off the wire!
Thank you I'm definitely going to change mine out just because all my outlets are crappy anything I plug in falls out not tight enough will go out to home depot tomorrow thanks 🙏🏼
Love how simple the video is so im trying to replace mine myself. But I bought the electrical outlet that’s like the video and got home to realize the back of the one installed in my house is different. Can I use what I have or do I have to wait until tomorrow to go back to the store? Also, it blew my whole left side of my house out. Will fixing this outlet fix the rest?
It may be a lingering smell. But there could be a possibility of something else. Hopefully the smell has gone away by now since you replaced your outlet.
I was at first time too and it was the first time I replaced one and I replaced ceiling fans and I was scared as hell about it and pace the house for 2 hours before I got the nerve to replace them I shut the power off before I did anything.🙂
Very helpful. I lost power to 4 outlets, and 1 looks just like the one you changed out. I'll give it a soon. My only concern is I don't have my breaker box labeled
Hey there, thanks for showing this! Not sure if you still check these comments but I just closed on a tiny house on Monday and aside from everything being very dated, it seems the wiring was definitely not done by an electrician. There are only a couple of grounded plugs in the house. To avoid using several 3-prong adapters, am I fine to replace my current 2 prong outlets (they don't hold plugs in very well) with 3 prong outlets and just maybe mark them to show they aren't grounded? Not sure if you can ground an outlet without putting some holes in the walls.
Congrats on your new house! Unfortunately I’m not an electrician so I can’t really advise you on how to go from 2 prong to 3 prong outlets. I was just able to replace my outlet with exactly the same thing. Sorry I’m not more help! Hopefully you find an answer to your project! Thanks for watching!
@@TheRenderQ Thanks a bunch! I also appreciate the quick response. Something I found is that older houses might have the 2-prong connected to a metal box and the box itself is grounded and that is where you would connect the ground for a 3-prong. Something I may look into or call an electrician if it is too daunting for me. Your video definitely helped with the confidence as well as another for light switches. Hopefully I can slowly update this old home and have some of the areas make a little more sense. I appreciate it!
I would like to replace all the outlets at my house do you recommend using 20 amp outlets for the larger appliances and 15 for the interior of the house? Will it cause complications?
20 amp receptacles will not cause complications. Use 15 amp "spec grade" receptacles. Never use 20 amp duplex receptacles because you'll never need them and they offer no advantage. If you're concerned about overloading it's the wire gauge, circuit breaker and the number of receptacles on that circuit that are important, not the receptacle. Another thing is that 20 amp receptacles can only be used on 20 amp circuits, but 15 amp duplex receptacles can be used on 15 or 20 amp circuits.
TheRenderQ, I just purchased a Leviton USB Charger/Tamper Resistant Outlet to replace a standard burned wall outlet like you're replacing in this video. However, the USB Charger has only the green ground on the bottom left side and two screws on the right side. The old outlet has two screws on the left and two screws on the right, plus the green ground screw. With two few screws on the left side of the charger how would I replace the new outlet in the place of the old outlet? Hopefully, you can answer me very quickly. Thank you, Willie.

Excellent! I’m so glad you were able to replace your outlet yourself! Not difficult to do but it always helps to see it done before attempting it yourself! Nice work!
I have one question my on outlet has completely burned and it shoots out sparks if you turn the power back on is it just the outlet or the wires? It's similar to the one you showed in the video but worse. Great video, Thank you!
Does the circuit tester lighting up indicate that: if one were to plug something into that plug that it should work? Please forgive my extreme lack of understanding in this matter.
Can I use just a simple voltage LED night light to test the circuitry as I don't have a circuit tester. Otherwise the video is simple and to the point. 👍
I suppose you could test the wires with anything that can let you know that the current is off at the outlet. At the time the 2-prong tester was what I had. But recently bought a no contact voltage detector for these type of electrical projects.
Even the sockets were shocked at how clear and simple the instructions were ^^

This is just what I needed. Thank you so much for straight to the point instructions. I am helping my daughter with her rental, so I get to go change a few outlets. Again, thank you!
Just found the space heater (which I'm trashing) burned my outlet. Glad I found your video - was easy to follow. Doing this tomorrow. Have subscribed to your channel. Thanks!
Thanks a bunch! I'm a first time homeowner, and I have a lot of outlets I want to replace.
I don't why this popped up in my recommended, but I'm glad it did; your voice closely resembles that of James Woods, so this tutorial is all the more epic because of said fact.
Wow! You’re the 2nd person today commenting that I sound like James Woods but on a different video! I am going to have to watch some of his movies to compare! Thanks for watching!
That is the clearest presentation I've ever seen. thanks, tracy
i love how concise and clear this was. good stuff!
I’m really glad you enjoyed my outlet replacement tutorial! And I always try to make my videos as short and concise as possible. No need for unrelated stuff! I know my viewers appreciate that!
Excellent demonstration - very good slow clear use of English. You should be a school teacher.
I’m glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
You made me grow a pair; thanks for explaining with excellent tips tricks. I will get a tester and follow all your very clear instructions; thanks so much brother. Stay healthy and strong!!!
Wow. Definitely doing this next weekend. You saved me lots of money from not hiring a contractor. Peace of mind too
Hey, how did you make out?
Great video, exactly what I needed to know in order to replace several outlets. I literally was going to start without turning off the breaker!! Glad I watched your video lmao
LOL yikes. Glad you're all good now!
Saw in another video that any screws not being used are tightened to avoid contact with the metal box. Another point, that the ground opening on the socket should always be closest to the floor so if via gravity the plug loosens the ground connection is maintained till the plug falls out. This was the way he did it , but it needs reminding.
The last time I had a receptacle turn black was a failed appliance plug, but certainly worthwhile testing and inspecting the wiring
Also it seemed like he was changing a Kitchen outlet and here in Canada the top and bottom section of the socket in most kitchen outlets are separately wired with a 220 V lead 120 to top and 120 to bottom each outlet good for 15A You have to break and twist off the copper interconnection on the receptacle on the feed or hot side. The smaller slot on the front of the receptacle is the hot side. You'll notice that the two breakers for kitchen outlets are linked and move together.
I'm not a professional, just an electronics, electrical, computer hobbyist.
Yay I can swap out my own outlets 😭 single mom and just bought a little bit of a fixer upper
Nice! I’m sure you can do it! Most important part is to make sure power is shut off to the outlet. Once you do one the rest will be easy!
Great instructional video, I will attempt this over the weekend to replace my old outlet.
Short. Direct. And pretty common sense step by step. Subbed.
That is a good advice I just replaced mine a few minutes ago and it was easy but I bit tricky because of the wires were butt heads but I got them in there place
Took me a hour to do that because of wiring or else it been 5 or 10 mins
This video helped me out and a very special 15 year old girl a big shout out to
She inspired me to do it myself
I said what the heck a 15 year old girl can do so can I !!!
And I did it!
I replaced ceiling fans now I replaced a electrical Receptacle what's is next
I have to take it step by step
@@Polaris_1992Yup! Saw a fifteen year old girl in the comment section so this was my sign to man up and buy the stuff to fix my burnt outlet. Still scared..but it needs to get done.
@@arlo9010 shut the breaker off and when you do the outlet remember where the wires go even take a picture of the wires so it will help you you got this bro it's has to be done or fire in your house and lose everything.
Nailed it 👍🏻
Thank you for your video it was helpful however I have never done anything like this before so I was very nervous if you turn on the outlet after you replace it and it doesn't work if you get the wires mixed up could not burn up the outlet
I don’t think you will burn out the outlet but if your wiring is not correct you could damage the device you plug into it or worse. So if you’re not comfortable with this I would recommend getting a professional to help!
Ty! I've always been afraid to touch an outlet. Lol. You made this really simple❤❤❤
Thank you for this video! This looks so easy but for some reason even though you turn off the circuit breakers I'm still nervous about doing it. I'm going to have to replace it because I can't get anyone else to do it for me.
Thanks!
I’m really glad my electrical outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! And I really appreciate the super thanks!
thank you! I work nights and was tired and needed a reminder...perfect!
Do you have a video on circuit breakers?
Thanks for not wasting our time :-) Good tutorial.
Perfect video of “How to” and I feel confident. Now I’m wondering what type of replacement to buy. Should all be grounded? Thanks so much!
Thanks man! Electricity makes me nervous!
Does it not matter than the wire is being scuffed when removing and reconnecting? I've watched several videos that says it does matter...
You made this quick and straight to the point, best way to do it!
I spotted a few mistakes
Mistake 1: You did not tighten the unused screw terminals!
Mistake 2: You did not attach Ground, Neutral then Hot
Mistake 3: You did not use a #1 Robertson screwdriver/bit
Mistake 4: You didn't use an outlet tester. You are supposed to use an outlet tester (e.g. Fluke ST120+) to make sure outlets are working correctly
Mistake 5: The outlet is not level!
Mistake 6: There was too much insulation off the wire!
Thank you! I had a space heater that burnt out an outlet and this is exactly what I needed to fix it
Excellent work Professor McClanahan
THX👍🏼🙋♀️🇨🇦‼️ Can you replace where an old clock plug in is, with one of these?
You made it very easy to your viewers in replacing the outlet, Thumbs up.
Thank you I'm definitely going to change mine out just because all my outlets are crappy anything I plug in falls out not tight enough will go out to home depot tomorrow thanks 🙏🏼
Thanks! You made this super easy and answered my other question about how to level a faceplate! Good blessing!👍
Excellent! Really glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Mission accomplished in my living room. Happy happy happy
Excellent! I’m sure it’s a great feeling knowing you can now replace an outlet yourself! Nice work! Thanks for watching!
Geeze, I thought I was going to have to hire someone but I think I can do this. Thanks!
One of the best instructional videos on UA-cam ~ Thanks!
Ive changed an outlet a few days ago but the burnt plastic smell is still there. Will it go away or its a cause for concern?
It may be a lingering smell. But there could be a possibility of something else. Hopefully the smell has gone away by now since you replaced your outlet.
Very good intro!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Straight to the point.
Really glad my outlet replacement video helped! Thanks for watching!
Only thing I'd change is the ground wire not being clean at point of contact, other than that straight to the point! 9.5/10!
Thank you for sharing the video! Is it going to be the same process if I want to replace the old one with a new one in which USB ports are integrated?
Thanks man! I have an "Electro-Phobia" but you made this simple and easy!
Thanks! Some guy wanted to charge me 300$ to change out 5 of them ( I bought the materials)
Thank you for showing me that and making it simply easy I'm a little shaky about it but I'm going to try it
I was at first time too and it was the first time I replaced one and I replaced ceiling fans and I was scared as hell about it and pace the house for 2 hours before I got the nerve to replace them I shut the power off before I did anything.🙂
Hope I can do it! I like your simple approach of one at a time.
Very helpful. I lost power to 4 outlets, and 1 looks just like the one you changed out. I'll give it a soon. My only concern is I don't have my breaker box labeled
Just turn the whole house off
Very clear instructions thank you, you give me a lot of confidence that I can do this safely.
I can do this because you made it very explanatory! Thank you!
Use 15’s throughout
20 amp receptacles will not cause complications. Use 15 amp "spec grade" receptacles. Never use 20 amp duplex receptacles because you'll never need them and they offer no advantage. If you're concerned about overloading it's the wire gauge, circuit breaker and the number of receptacles on that circuit that are important, not the receptacle. Another thing is that 20 amp receptacles can only be used on 20 amp circuits, but 15 amp duplex receptacles can be used on 15 or 20 amp circuits.
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much!!
Am a woman on my own..this is the only vid that that helped me to replace a wall outlet..yay..who needs a man…well maybe that’s a bit harsh..they are really nice to have around..
🇨🇦
Excellent! I’m so glad you were able to replace your outlet yourself! Not difficult to do but it always helps to see it done before attempting it yourself! Nice work!
this litterly saved me 200 dollars 😩😩😩 thank you
That’s great! I’m glad you didn’t have to have the electrician come out to replace your outlet! Thanks for watching!
Thanks boss. Today replaced mine such satisfaction. All credit to ur simple instructions
Does it matter what kind of outlets? Or are all of them pretty similar ?
Thank you 🙏🏿 gonna change out 4 soon as I get home
Can I use just a simple voltage LED night light to test the circuitry as I don't have a circuit tester. Otherwise the video is simple and to the point. 👍
I suppose you could test the wires with anything that can let you know that the current is off at the outlet. At the time the 2-prong tester was what I had. But recently bought a no contact voltage detector for these type of electrical projects.
Thank you for the demonstrational video now I know the steps just in case I need to fix any power outlets in my home.
