Wow, you are the first creative person in years that has suggested NOT having a plan B 👍🏻 I decided when I was about 13 I was going to be a musician. I went to music college when I was 16. It never occurred to me to have a plan B, I was all in on music. Now I’m old I try to advise youngsters on music chatrooms and forums. My comments are always drowned out by part time musicians telling the kid they should go to university and study accounting or train as a plumber or something 😞
My parents told me to 'keep my options open'... which ended up being so many plan b's, that I just spun without direction. I finally figured out that was awful advice and did my own thing. I sat down and figured out what I was good at, then within a couple of years was very successful. I've done well ever since I ditched that advice. Keeping to a stratified goal system requires more discipline than I can muster. But if I could, wow.
BTW, I'm in the process of removing hobbies. Photography will always be my hobby and likely a side hustle. I don't want/need to be a pro at this point in my life. But with it being my primary hobby and creative outlet, I can refine my craft which will make me much happier.
Glad to see you're getting into filmmaking, and wanting to do TVCs! As I work in that industry, and even though photography is very different to the film sets I work on, I find what you do to have a similar enough overlap in mindset that I've been always very much enjoying your content for the years (yes, years!) I've been watching it.

If I look at photographers, artists etc. the ones that really made it, were all in. There are thousands of pieces that they produce but we remember maybe 10. All In

I feel I was meant to see this video... I've been at this for so long and love it too much. But, I've gotten nowhere with it. I made a diction, that I'm getting a part-time to support the Photography that I've always wanted to do. I appreciate your words.
Any advice on setting relevant goals? Right now I only have one goal which is to shoot as much as possible in 2023 so that I start 2024 with a proper portfolio.
I loved your comment about getting your head on a hobby, because @ 60-ish I still think that I can train for my dream 7 day, 100 km a day average Mountain Bike Race in Morocco that happens during April, where temperatures are above 45C sometimes and off course here I am trying to learn this profession to see if I can ever make a living out of it, I guess based on your comment about taking about 15 years to get to where you are, I will be starting to make some decent money @75-ish , I guess I really have to live to 140 as I always tell my family 😊🤣🤣🤣😇
The side hustle needs to earn enough to not make you stress about money but not be too taxing to make you too exhausted to do the photography? So it needs to be either passive/low stress/less mentally or physically involved. It's a fine line... hope I've understood you correctly
Yes totally. I could up my youtube videos and do bigger stuff rather than a day of talking to camera. BUT that takes up too much of my energy and then my main focus gets diluted. Its a real tough balance and I try to be fluid with it all the time and the amount I put in each month varies a lot depending on how I feel.
The most important thing takes the least amount of time.
I read a book once (Shocking, I know!) Called " do what you love, and the money will follow." That plan b gets in the way. Now the dark horse plan z? That's where it's really at and nobody plans for Z!
Hi Scott I’m enjoying your videos and learning a lot from the information your passing on to the community great help personally as my photography business moves forward. I watch your videos over coffee in the morning as I am 8hrs ahead of UK … 😅. As a personal question would you consider doing a video on the commercial side of calculating usage fees and image licensing contracts while retaining copyright etc., the advantages and disadvantages from your professional point of view this would IMHO be very useful for us all to know and practice. Recently I was approached by a client asking about this very subject regarding a set of pictures I submitted from a resent event I did here in Asia, it may be something both I and your viewers may be finding difficult to handle well, noting that this side of the business if done correctly could be very lucrative in addition to day rates etc.. There’s a website he has used that gives you the rates for everything a client could possibly pay you for. From your day rate to licensing and even what the photo is specifically used for. Google aop usage calculator.
I’m just wondering, as you are a professional photographer, how do you find the time to make so many videos? Many pro photographers I know don’t have 5 mins to themselves.
Good question. I was going to make a video on it, but I am not sure its of that much use to most people. But there are 2 things that allow me to do it.
1. batch filming. Every video up until the end of November is filmed, edited, uploaded and scheduled already. It takes a day to film and a day to edit and upload, so thats me done for a month then.
2. I have a cleaner, accountant, web guy, full time studio assistant, editors, agent, producer, marketing team and we only take on large jobs so the workload is less than it would have been years ago when I was doing £2k a day jobs.
So today I was done by 2pm, picked the kids up and now im about to make dinner after checking the comments. But then other weeks I might be on a shoot, no comments get checked and I live in a hotel and am on set 12 hours a day, but the videos still go live because of the batch filming.

yeah sadly though not advice that I can give to people to easily action. Although I have wanted to make a free video for how to make a youtube channel as its nowhere near as hard as I thought once id worked it all out. @@daisei-iketani

Interesting - a Yearly Training Plan for photography. Instead of preparatory, competitive and transition phases you have your three yearly objectives. If you had a place to get to over 4 years, you’d have a quadrennial plan, just like an Olympic cycle. The biggest variable that I can see is that none of us know what we don’t know, so having mentors instead of coaches may be necessary in order for this to succeed to the fullest.
Hi Scott, when you mention your goal of creating more C style video work, what exactly is that? Do you mean Product Video commercial’s or do you mean actual TV commercial work? Thanks again

There's a risk of burnout when putting all your focus into just the one craft, excluding hobbies, cutting down the social life, etc. Applies to UA-cam and many other disciplines too. Due to the competitiveness it seems like a requirement but it's unsustainable long term, the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Which is the right approach, balls to the wall effort until you make it or burnout, or a slower burn of consistent effort over time with delayed gratification and results, sprint or marathon?
Yeah the burn outs real, all about finding ways to avoid or when unavoidable recover. But I think this differs so much between people. I do a 24 hour sleep and then I’m back to it.
My only question is why is your train to London 200 quid?😂
Anyone who finds weddings easy isn't giving their best effort on the day. So many lazy wedding photographers. So many pristine cameras . If your equipment is still pristine after 3 weddings you are not giving your clients your best. Means you are standing and shooting without getting down and dirty.
