    I get hired by photographers often as a DP. I do stills as well but in 2015 I saw how important video could be and I started learning everything I could about it. It's a good spot to be in

    Yup, I'm seeing this just in posting to my own Instagram channel recreationally. Did some tests and saw a spike of 83% more engagement on average with the video content, even when it's just short form, small action content of birds. The industry has 100% moved on to video.
    My one other thought around this is, are clients looking to try and save money and put all of it onto one person? I ask this because what used to be three people (photography, video, direction) is now being sent to just one person. As someone who came from VFX, this is sounding eerily a lot like how we were slowly forced to wear more and more hats until we find we're doing the job of 5 people just to remain hired. Which has now pushed for a lot of my colleagues to try and unionize.

    Thanks for keeping the good industry info coming! I loved how the audio that was supposed to be at tc 7:11 slipped to 7:07! (maybe you're just checking to see who's paying attention. snark) It's what happens when we're busy and churning out tons of content. Good BTS/outtake kinda stuff. Thanks for keeping' it real!

    For food vids and stop motion work, a studio stand would be more practical than a video tripod.

    I must admit I've changed. In my 20's I used film. In my early 50's I went to digital and video, 5 years later I've gone back to 1850's technology with full plate, wet plate photos. Can I make it commercially (well I make enough to order a beer), probably not, but its fun 😂😂😂

      I wonder if the hybrid/video roles will fill the middle market. Scott often talks about there being extreme polarity in the jobs (very high end or very high volume). Could this actually be a new opportunity for jobber photographers?

    I have that same Smallrig video tripod and I can't recommend it enough if you're finding yourself in need of an entry-level video tripod (i'm thinking of picking up a second for my B-cam setup and second shooter). I picked it up after receiving increased demand for video work at my tiny little photo business. You just don't know how much the right set of sticks under your camera can improve your work until you go from trying to shoot on a stills tripod to a well-built video tripod. It might not be the best thing out there, but it's already paid for itself. IMHO it's value is much greater than the cost of purchase.

    Welcome to the world of video! By the way, that IS a parabolic softbox but you are correct in that when adding the honeycomb to it that you are defeating the purpose of a parabolic softbox. Understand that this is one of many types of parabolic modifiers such as a parabolic umbrella or a parabolic reflector which is probably what you are more accustomed to in your line of work. The key in videography is having soft light hence the SOFTBOX portion of the parabolic softbox. The honeycomb while counterintuitive to the purpose of a parabolic softbox is simply to prevent light spill in situations where you don't want... light spill over! But you probably know all of this however some people in the comments may not so hopefully those that do not have a better understanding if they read this!

    • @TinHouseStudioUK
      @TinHouseStudioUK  9 місяців тому +2

      For light to be parabolic it cant be diffused as its the opposite of parabolic. It is also the wrong shape to collimate the light source. By adding the diffuser you don't make the light softer, just more diffused as the size of the light remains the same.The bit about the grid is correct though. Hope that helps

    All the comments about the audio glitch at 7:06 mark illustrates why traditional photographer becoming hybrid video pro is challenging. Moreover, career videographers can probably dabble in photography more easily than photographers migrating to video. I don’t deny the premise of this video, but for those of us that don’t make their primary living on being a creative we can probably stay devoted to photography until they pry our Nikon Df out of our dead hands 😂

      Yeah, it's about having the right clients and being busy to stay a still photographer. Also, most of my photo shoots involve lighting in multiple locations lasting 10 hours. When would I find the time to do both? Plus, when I'm not shooting the talent, then the video production team (if needed) is videoing them somewhere else while I'm moving to the next location, and setting up.

    This gets a Lot more complicated for lifestyle shooters who find themselves pulling that double duty or without enough time to do their thing behind a motion crew. You should talk about it being a separate rate for directing & how licensing stills vs work for hire goes for motion…

    I see the same happening in wildlife and nature photography. It is a completely different world than commercial, but all of the socials (which is where for me at least most of the contacts come from) you need a lot of wildlife video as well as good stills. Preferably in 9:16, which is why I suddenly appreciate open gate capture a lot more.

    the hard thing about being a content creator if you're shooting for restaurants is how you juggle shooting photo and then video, so as a cost effective move, buy a hybrid camera. but yeap, video is a big part now in the client side marketing due to reels so that you'd still appear in the feed

    I was "only" a photographer until 2020. I even left money on the table in the years before that because photo work was good enough. Since then I've totally embraced all video and all formats of media. Even balls deep in after effects and guess what, I love it all. Pigeon holing yourself isn't going to work in this new era.

Will they still hire you if you said I can light, shoot and direct but someone else has to color grade, process and edit the final? Or would you just budget a post process editor for that and bill the full package and freelance outsource the other work?
