- I get my hands on a brand new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, but this particular one has the much talked about PDK transmission, does it make more sense than the iconic manual version?

Had the keys to this beauty for 30 mins, hope I managed to share my experience with everyone 👌 Hopefully get one of these on track one day 🏁
Great catch, and WOW, what a red spec! The GT4 is one of my favourite Porsches on sale today. Beautiful scenery as well. Excellent video Joe!
Why is the chance of the average joe getting one small? Just price? Or gt4 is reserved for frequent Porsche buyers?
This is such a beautiful car! Porsche for sure make their cars stunning!
Stunning isn't it 🔥
I wonder how easy it would be to lower the gearing in the differential in the manual car
Exterior, interior, fly-by shots, and review in only 30 minutes. Amazing! Well done Joe.👍
Thanks buddy, got a bit of a sweat on 😂🎥🎬
Mine is due for delivery around 6/15/2021. I went for PDK. It is gonna be so awesome!
Sick!! Congrats man!
Got mine 2021 pdk spyder last year winter ❄️ it’s yellow 😆
You get it?
@@AdhamHossam165 yes sir!! She is beautiful and handles like a dream. It does need exhaust BAD!! 50-70 more horsepower would be nice too! GT4RS is gonna to be nuts!!
@@timmietz Fuuck I didn't even know they were doing a GT4RS... I guess I have a new goal now.
Love the fact that there are no more distorting artificial pops and crackles.
Yeah that is quite refreshing
Exhaust Farts are the worst recent trend in cars imo they sound horrible but each to their own
@@SM-ft2jv The natural crackles are fine but the forced stuff like from AMG, yeh too much.
Never understood this, it sounds 💩
The normal stuff from the factory doesn't bother me too much. It's when a wide bodied BRZ is driving down the street and crackles for 20 seconds that pisses me off.
That GT4 is a beauty. And it sounds amazing.
I have had both manual and PDK on the Boxsters that I have owned and definitely love the PDK.
I think the Boxster Cayman has been designed for PDK - The manual isn't the best it can be - Suits the PDK more erginomically too imo.
Witch one provides the more aggressive shifts?
Literally watching this video when you watched my M3 video 😂 love this car! Quite like the idea of the pdk solely for shorter ratios lol great vid mate!
🤣🤣🤣 Legend! Yeah the shorter gears make it a fraction more legal 😬👊
GTS 4.0 with PDK is the sweet spot. I get it guys, we all love driving the manual... but living with a manual day to day? I do it now and have done it for many years prior. The action is great but you're getting to enjoy it 25% of the time at best. PDK makes the rest of life easier oh and the car is faster with better MPG too.
100% agreed. Had manuals my whole life, at 37 I have just bought my first Porsche, a Cayman 981 S with PDK.
Sports Chrono, PSE, PTV. The 0-60 time is 0.5 seconds faster, your hands stay on the wheel the whole time and to me its a far superior car for the mountain roads.
Which is surely where we plan to spend most of our time?!
@@MacroLensMan You are blessed! Cool car
Well done, sir. Glad to see the channel continue to grow!
Thank you 🙏
The pdk is the best gear box I ever used.
And they make the car sound like shit. It makes the car have a shitty continuation. It doesn't have the beautiful revving of engine before shift.
I'm about to do a Turbo S911 with a manual swap. I hate that shitty automatic. You can always make the car faster but you can't replace what you lose in the feel and the sound of the car
@@robd1859 how do you mean "It doesn't have the beautiful revving of engine before shift"? It revs exactly the same, bit faster due to slightly shorter ratios if anything?
Joe, you're knocking these uploads out of the park!!
Thank you
As an M2 manual owner with a 718 gts 4.0 pdk on order, I really appreciate your perspective!
Cheers Jack, I genuinely think the GTS 4.0 is the best drivers (road car) on the planet. 👌
@@BurgerCroissant There is a con rod recall right now that is very frustrating
@@JoeAchilles1 -20mm or -10mm suspension with standard seats? What do you think on manual street car?
Burger Croissant i have my gts 4.0 pdk 2 months now and i love it! It‘s also really fast
Burger Croissant Thank you. GT Silver
Great to see more Porsche content, especially GT4!
Currently drive a BGTS 2.5 the GT4 PDK is on order and I cannot wait 😍 thanks for the great video!
Keep up the good work Joe! Brilliant
Thank you ❤️
@@JoeAchilles1 like you to do some restomods if you ever get the time, I know you’re a busy man! But I think your opinion would be a valid and honest one, you’re a brilliant journalist and a true petrol head
Sold me on the noise and gearbox alone - great vid!
Great shot of the heritage edition targa, perfect timing 👌
Great video Joe - again! Lovely seeing you drive on the actual roads we were on today - in our 981 GT4. Agree with everything you say including the straight-line speed not being the best and the low speed ride being very 'busy' on our roads, but when conditions allow - oh boy, manual GT4 for me!
Sick mate.
You know I love these 'one takes'...
Plus that GT4! 😍 Looks like it's been lowered on spacers! ❤
Haha thanks buddy, turned out okay concidering lack of time. Yeah looks mega as a factory fresh setup 👌
GT4 very quick on track - see Fifth Gear shootout against new M4. Would rather have the road biased GTS though.....
Thank you Joe for this amazing and insightful review!
Absolutely beautiful.
Great video Joe. I have the GTS4.0 (since last November) and absolutely love it but GT4 still remains my dream car.....in manual!
Good review! I have got a manual Guards Red GTS 4 Cayman on order (due in 6 weeks) and I live a couple of miles from your test drive. Glad to hear that you preferred the manual - I agree with you completely.
Ohh congratulations, manual GTS is where my money would go too, massively capable road car, throw some better tyres on it and massively capable track car too 👌
Cayman R hands down. Way more bang for buck, a future classic (if not already), true analog, bucks depreciation trends, and more opportunity to use more of its potential than the GT4.
The GT4 would be my favorite fun car beside my M340i Touring as daily driver. This combination would be incredible! But it will stay a dream for a while...
4.0 manual with sports exhaust. Almost 400 hp of revy perfection. All the car you need on British roads.
10:27 look at the wheel of the van, he's already off-roading 😂👍
GT4 PDK 0-60 is 3.7 sec and probably underestimated. BMW's M's will not be doing much smoking on the straight and still fishtailing around the corners.... Good review though.
That cars an absolute weapon. Great review Joe.
Another excellent video. It would be a GTS 4.0 manual for me - if I was changing the M2C. Meanwhile I am hopeful of having a play shortly in a GT4 manual.
Great review Joe👍 Will you do another video on the GTS you had that is a bit more in depth then the first one?
Joe great video as usual. Interested in your views of the GTS over M2 CS manuals!! I’ve put my money down on the later.
Great vid mate 👍.
The sound quality 👌. I feel like I was riding shortgun
So glad I watched this excellent (as always) review, was torn between PDK and Manual.
Opted for manual after coming from PDK, for the engagement more than anything👍
Great video, the 718 pdk is so quick, are the foot pedals on a manual spaced enough for non racing drivers who can’t heel and toe.
The auto blip function works so well there is no need to heel and toe if you don’t want to/can’t
Great Video again Joe..... Whilst I understand the 718 is very capable, for me I wouldn’t be happy with myself if I bought one! I’d always think why didn’t I get the 911! But perhaps thats just me!
That 30 mph segment kind of supports getting the base models (unless you track a car), just limited places to enjoy the capability of these models.
Thanks Joe! Still not sure what box to tick on my spec.
Not a bad decision to have 😉
@@JoeAchilles1 🤣 very true!
Amazing car very sportly cool exhaust 😎
Cant decide between this and than manual one.... feel like i want this for the track... but how much will i actually be tracking it? Honestly feel like not alot... i want to do it all the time but realistically? Uuuugh maybe i should go manual gearbox....manual for dd all the way... but just keep thinking about the track....
It has adjustable suspension so you can soften it for the road.
You can adjust various alignment, but can't soften it as far as I'm aware.
Can’t wait to get the PDK GT4!! Just engine rod recall has delayed mine 👎🏼
Ahh I didn't know about the recalls, glad they snapped that up sooner rather than later I guess...
@@JoeAchilles1 yes pal, I think 20 or less need full engine swaps, due to being driven, luckily I hadn’t taken delivery of mine but still not sure if it will need a whole new engine 😅
Great video Joe 👍
Thank you 👊
Think you have right proved that impressive doesn’t always mean emotionally on point. A change ratio(s) would take a 99% car so close to perfection... and I’m still enjoying my car, thanks for asking Joe! 🤣
Haha thanks David, glad you agree and enjoying your car 👌
@@JoeAchilles1 it’s amazing. I don’t think I would have one without your content, so thank you! I have only travelled 600miles (too busy!) so have adhered to run-in etc. I’m headed to the Lake District this week so aim to get to know it a bit better shortly! Content and insights are amazing Joe, keep it up!
Very interesting and honest review Joe, I can see the delight on your face and relate to the experience :)) Should I deal my 4.0 GTS pdk for the GT4 idk ?
Joe you need to try out a 991 Gt3 or 3rs!
The steering marker should have been red instead of yellow. The manual is cumbersome on the street but feels at home at the track, specially at tracks with long straights. I was recently at Circuit of the Americas and the transmission felt great. The manual transmission makes the car more engaging and a bit more challenging to drive. Safe the money and order the manual, trust me.
Great video as usual Joe but pity you only had the 718 GT4 PDK for 30 minutes. I did contemplate a 718 GT4 PDK but I'm keeping my 981 GT4 as it is a great car, manual, club sport spec and the noise that also accompanies it….you just don't get that anymore.
I don't know why everybody started complaining about terrible gear ratios with 718 gen. They have been like that for boxster/cayman since they exist 😊. And yeah, PDK ratios are terrible as well, tiny bit less 😢
Best looking Porsche... Better than the new GT3 for me!
Nice video although a bit misleading about the PDK fixing the gear ratios. The manual in 2nd gear on the GT4 tops out at 83MPH compared to the PDKs 78/79MPH. So those thinking a PDK us going to fix their ratios issue need to think again.
I wish motoring journalists would get this right!
The Smoking Tire @ You Tube mentioned it…
Totally agree I have a 4.0 GTS manual and think its the Better road car.
New to the channel, I like the content!
Great job Joe.Is the suspension stiffer than in your M2C ?
Cheers man, yeah maybe a little stiffer, but feels more expensive if that makes sense, stiff but smooth 😉
Red everywhere inside but yellow 12 o’clock marker? Surely a missed option…
Infotainment screen at knee cap level is really bad ergonomics.
So joe, let me ask you if you could have manual engine timing, would you prefer that? very involving, you know?
There's 4 and 5 mph difference 2nd and 3rd redline PDK to manual. Really inconsequential TBH. I think the PDK stays on the power much better because of the quicker shifts. It feels quicker. For mine I'd take the PDK because I'm a left foot braker and not in to the hype of a manual. Traffic sucks in the manual and you don't get to do that many shifts on the road. And that clutch does get painful after a while. At the track I'd take the PDK everyday.
Some may sat it's emotional, I call it agricultural .... That cars big feature, what makes it so special is the way it rotates around you, its precision.
Excellent good for you 👏
Shifts in manuals sound so lame lol DCT/PDK is so much more aggressive.
I feel like previous owners were duped the first iterations of this were sub 500hp currently 420 and now the rs will have 500. 500-550 is where this car needs to be for it to be perfect pdk or manual
Cor that van took a lot of that banking!!!
Haha it really did, I didn't realise until I watched the footage back 😬
This car is fantastic and the new gt3 is another level....Bmw!! Have you seen how sport cars make!?
Awesome sport car great sun glasses but with that car I would like every body to notice me hahaha
Turbo power (from the M2C) is deceptive due to the mountain of torque. By contrast, a GT4 hides its performance somewhat due to the smoothness of the power delivery. Stock vs stock a GT4 is quite a bit faster than an M2C in a rolling race. 62-124 time is about 1.5s quicker.
Fair point, that's interesting re the times. I did look up the claimed 0-62 time after this video and was surprised to see 3.7 seconds, that certainly makes it quicker than my M2.
@@JoeAchilles1 What's also interesting is that (aside from 0-60 where the manual car loses heaps) the real world performance figures of manual vs PDK are turning out to be about equal. Even 62-124 which requires two shifts, the slightly superior in-gear acceleration of the more efficient manual box just makes up for the time lost not accelerating during shifts. Well, if you shift like your life depends on it anyway. The PDK is certainly easier and more consistent and comes into its own on track where you can just do stuff with it that you can't in the archaic manual car (unless you have three arms and three legs)
@@JCviggen1 Can confirm. GT4 much faster in a straight line than my manual M2C. Tested at the Ridge Motorsport track. The "added lightness" :) on the GT4 really shows (200 kg lighter).
I was worried I’d made the wrong decision not waiting for the PDK when I got my GTS last year but don’t have the issues with the long gearing and love the car. I’ve been in an M2 DSG previously so concerned how I’d find the gear changing but it’s so easy. Having experienced the manual I genuinely don’t know which way I would go if I had to make the choice now. Probably for the PDK just because my son drives away from me in his chipped M240i !
Think this'll be too low for speed bumps/ferries etc? As a daily.
another brilliant Joe Achilles REAL review, wish all the stupid car reviewer's (dumb analogies and corny jokes) would take a leaf out your book and do reviews like this, where you just get actual info and feedback and desire to own
Is there not an alternative final drive you can get for a GTS manual? Or even the GT4?
Unfortunately no. You get what you get.
RPM Technic does it…
Every 'reviewer' going on about a manual 'box and how they'd spec it and how that's how it's supposed to be whilst simultaneously telling us it's to high ratioed in 1st and 2nd is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Take a Manual, drive around the country, have fun then head back to central London. 1st, Neutral, 1st, Neutral, 1st, Neutral. Repeat 500 times, or get a PDK, be faster, be in the proper power band and potter comfortably around London.
This with the jcr exhaust 475bhp sounds as good as any car.
cracking video...thanks 👌🏽☺
keep your manual. I will take the PDK, all day, every day. : P
Manual will be worth a lot more in the future I rekon.
Living in Northamptonshire with the amount of mobile enforcement cameras that operate here..a manual GT4 would never see any gears other than first..just a lotto win away from owning one though...
How do you like it compared to the new G series M3&4 ??
Nice one Joe
It´s possible to get the manual version and do some shorter gearing.
Yeah, it cost a bit more but I am sure it is worth it.
In theory yes. You can, i’ve asked the same question lol
Same as you can buy a Macan GTS and do a CPU remap to get the same HP as the Turbo model.
If I had my way there would be no PDK, MANUAL OMLY THANK YOU.
The GT4 has long gearing which sucks for public roads.
Joe does not like this car..... he loves it !
🤣👌
Great colour
Spec on this is lovely
My 2021 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 PDK just arrived will be uploading a few videos on it soon after the ceramic coating is done ✅
It's an odd situation Sports Cars are in today. With less power they would be more exciting and more usable on the public roads. Considering that's 'only' a mid range Porsche car, it's within 100BHP of the new GT3, which makes it a bit of a bargain in comparison too....
It's definitely not a mid range porsche, more of an entry level GT which makes it a different kettle of fish, sits just below the GT3.
I still hope to see the day that Porsche decides to put the flappy paddles on the steering column instead of the steering wheel. The degree of steering rotation in productions vehicles is vastly different of a racecar. It doesn't make any sense to put the flappy paddles on the steering wheel like Porsche and Audi does.
Only Ferrari and Lamborghini seem to get it.
Maserati and Mitsubishi also get it.
That’s one nice looking car and it sounds great 👍🏿. I need to drive a Porsche to see what all the fuss is about.
My first drive in one was a 996 turbo....I’d already bought it without driving it....just sitting in it with the engine running.....before you even set off....you know you are in something a bit special. Make sure you get to try it one day

Edit : Great video as always also when are you going to have a go in the new 992 GT3 ? ;)
🏆
One question for anyone who prefers the manual and complains about the PDK is ..........”Why would you want to go slower?”
Good video 👍but you must to change exhaust in not good 🙈
What do you say to Jayemm's disappointment with the GTS versions - too stiff and lacking in steering feel?
I didn't find that to be the case at all, amazing ride for such a focused sports car and plenty of steering feel for a modern Electric setup 👌
His hands are too fat that’s why no feel
👍🏻
What feels quicker , the M2 Comp or this..?
The M2 Comp in gear due to far more torque, probably isn't anything in it in reality....
@@JoeAchilles1 Thanks
Joe have you got any other cars right now apart from your m2 comp. I know the 7 went back.
Yes currently, M3 is not far away now....
@@JoeAchilles1 Can't wait to see what your spec is on that car. So excited
Unpopular opinion, maybe we needed less power but more driver engagement. Then manuals wouldn't do such high speeds at low gears. After all the speed limit has remained the same since forever
Take depreciation/collectability out of it, is it really worth the money over the 981 Cayman S though?
The 6 pot alone makes a huge difference for me, but the S is arguably better value I guess. GTS 4.0 for me
@@JoeAchilles1 Yeah thats what I meant the 981 is the last flat six of the normal range albeit only the 3.4 but for 35-40k is it close in terms of speed/enjoyment.
@@DanB- where do you find 3.4 for 35-40k, i am in Germany and they are arpund 50k here

Hi Joe.
Hi 👋
I think he likes the manual.
Hello. I would never take GTS 4.0. For 13-15,000 euros more I would take a Spyder or GT4. PDK is much superior. For a sporty driving with a manual gearbox, the first gear must be used a lot. Buchetseats are very uncomfortable. If you use the car on longer journeys, sports seats are enough. The model you tested looks very nice. I like red guards with black rims. GT4 is the best handling car. It has the most balanced chassis. For me the GT4 is the best Porsche. It's worth the money. Good luck. I'm waiting to see your M3. Is it green? :) Good luck
Am i the only one in the world who would rather have a PDK in one of these than a manual?
So you really think Porsche only made PDK available in the GT4 for just one person, namely you. I don’t think so.
