Great video 🤓!!! Last year in February 2023, I acquired my new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car! So far, I've only done 819 miles but hopefully a lot more this next coming Summer! The PDK is also a lot of fun (it's definitely quick) 🤓 All the best and thanks again from Colorado! Mine is Aventurine green, subtle and suits the car. Sublime to drive. I don’t struggle with the gears, it’s my daily and I like that I can go hard in 1st and 2nd (and 3rd sometimes, sorry 👮♀️) but it’s quite relaxed if you short shift and it still pulls from low revs. I came to it from an M2, loved that as well but the Cayman is just so much more balanced with better feel in every aspect of the driving.
Only Porsche can reduce Cayman GT4 overs market, by releasing a new normally aspirated Cayman GTS and end up selling even more cars, no wonder they are the most profitable car company in the world. I have a 991.2 GT3 and in love with it, but these gts normally aspirated cars are really appealing in a world if turbo charged cars. Great review as always Joe.

Hi Joe, I have one of these, and still running it in. First Porsche for me, and plan to keep it a long long time. Dream for me. Absolutely love it. Even without going over 4000 rpm you can still get to hear that great sound in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. It’s addictive. I do understand all the comments about the long gear ratios, but I still enjoy using all the gears going slowly. Looking forward to reaching 1000 miles though and opening the taps a bit more. 😊.
The running in 3000km is crazy long in these isn’t it! BTW, the exhaust valves close even in sport mode from 2k-4k, so as to pass drive by noise regs. That’s why is sounds really beefy low down the revs. Once above 4k, it opens up again and sounds way better. You can’t really notice while running in sub 4k though! You just wait 😃
I'm in exactly the same boat. Even below 4000 rpm it's the best sounding car I've ever been in. Not that loud, but so multi-layered and exciting. Logically I know the gearing is too long, but in the driving I tend to do around town, it's not an issue for me at all. I'm using all 6 gears and loving the gearbox, even if it's a bit stiff when cold. Can't wait till it's run in to hear the exhaust valves open up above 4000 rpm!

BTW, the weight is with a full tank and driver. The handling around the limit was well described Joe. The car moved more as a whole, unless harshly provoked. Driven normally, they feel light footed and scalpel like. The 911 is more of a challenge, but normal roads stop you exploring them properly. In a 911 speed, you are always managing one end, or the other. So unless you go fast enough to start mobilising the chassis, then they feel just too slammed and planted. I want the 2,5 or 2 liter 4 cylinder turbo because it is the sensible car with lower fuel consumption and better powerband with more low down grunt + good top power and can be tuned to 400 - 500hp easily, and they do actually sound really good at low rpm with the boxer 4 ruble like rolling thunder... But the scream of the boxer 6 is sooo addictive :)

Great video mate. Nice to see your doing Porsche now too. You have done well since me asking you all the questions on buying my 135i. Your a top guy. Good luck man :-) happy Easter. 👍
Wonderful video. Nothing better than a high revving NA motor and a manual. I know your forte is German metal, but you should get your hands on an Elise, Exige or Evora before they end production this year.
Great first drive video Joe! Love the 718 GTS, great to see flat 6's back in the Boxster/Cayman line up. One of the remaining few great drivers cars of 2021 in my opinion.
Good job, friendly and authentic presentation. First time viewer here, I saw you from Carwow in the past. Also, as a 2021 992 Carrera S owner, I am thinking of trading in for a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 PDK model. Not sure if you would recommend me going that route?
Great car, my first drive in a 6 pot cayman was on track at Porsche silverstone and my overwhelming thought was just how sharp a car it is to drive compared to my old slk 55 amg I had at the time, just a brilliant drivers car 🤙
Spot on with cayman 987 comments. I got my cayman 987 base last year and it makes drivers with poor driving skills look like drivers with great driving skills. Driven may 100’s of car and nothing compares to the cayman not even the same era 911
Great review! I don't mind the longer gearing of my mechanically similar 718 Spyder.. 2nd gear makes it an absolute weapon for overtaking. There is plenty of torque and I easily find myself using the first 4 ratios for the hell of it on a back road. A Cargraphic Valve control unit is a must though.. lots of nice flat six noise to savour between 2k and 4k RPM. GTS/GT4 are epic!
Just a quick correction: It was V4 not a Boxer 4 the 718 has as its engine. Had alot of tech from the 919 Hybrid racecar but didnt sound anything impressive with the filters on.
@@JoeAchilles1 Anytime Joe! Its a very very clever little engine but with the wrong utilisation. Worth watching this on Drivetribe: ua-cam.com/video/LkYxdT7Ovtw/v-deo.html
Hi Joe, nice review, quick question, if you had to choose between this Cayman GTS and an M3 competition as a second car (not taking into account the fact that you have an M3), what would you choose ?
If you do a more in depth review Joe after a few days would love to hear your thoughts on tyre / cabin noise. Just traded my 718GTS PDK 4-pot and placed an order for a D3s. I was so so tempted to order the 4.0 but just couldn't bear the tyre noise any longer on mine above 40-50mph using it daily for work.
I just went GTS2.5 to a 4.0. It’s the same. The N0 Michelin are quieter than the N1 Pirelli, but not enough to change tour mind I doubt. I’d already fitted PS4S to the 2.5 and was VERY lucky to find an unregistered dealer stock car, that also had them fitted. 90% seem to have the way less good Pirelli.
@@DontPanicDear yeah i had considered trying the Michelin's but assumed the difference in sound would be marginal. How's the 4.0 motor - is it as much a game changer for you as most of the reviewers feel.
@@paulfrost9549 In a word, YES! (But wind / road noise is the same) The sound alone is what everyone mentions, but it’s deeper than. It’s louder and more characterful, than comes across in these videos too. It has a sharp induction bark if you blip the throttle a little too. The torque solid wave of torque below 2000rpm is amazing. To potter about in it during running in, was so satisfying. The throttle control and clutch are also judged to perfection! I did daily the 2.5GTS, and the 981 before it (almost 30k miles each) but not this 4.0. We want to keep this one forever, so have bought a bargain one year old i30N for daily duties. It’s fun and a great contrast. I hope you enjoy your next car 🚗
@@DontPanicDear thanks, maybe one day if I think about a cheaper daily + a second car the 4.0 will be at the very top of my list. Hope you enjoy it for a long time.
That comment about the gear ratios reminds me that in my original 986 anniversary Boxster second gear was good for 74mph, third 106. Sadly no longer driving a Porsche
There are only a few mph in it anyway. The PDK is always faster, but if if you’re good with a manual, you’ll be smoother. PDK is also good for traffic jams, as it’s easy. Generally re the gearing..... It’s always been that way in all Porsche cars. Less of an issue now with a bit more power anyway. The ratios are fine if you drive it like nobody’s looking! They actually fit the roads perfectly, from maintain passes to British B-Roads. The higher red lines these days mean higher peak speeds in the gears, which nobody mentions. There is simply no need to red line each gear to have fun on the road anyway. Porsche like flexibility and peerless traction as traits in their cars. People always mention these attributes in relation to the brand. Full throttle in 1st gear in the wet is even possible. Full throttle in 2nd out of tight curves with absolute security. Sometimes it feels like you can take liberties, like in a 4WD car! Shorter final drive would be fun in some ways, but would remove this quality that Porsche hold dear! BMW cars are always scrabbling about for traction. It’s fun and can be exciting, but it’s less effective. Porsche cars always delivered with a straighter face and seem to be faster than their power outputs suggest. After three Cayman GTS, and a few speedy BMW, those are my thoughts anyway.
Another great video Joe 👍 Really enjoying your content atm- keep them coming! Working for the Dick Lovett group I get to drive all the different BMW’s you review, I have only driven a few different Porsches recently and when you said ‘you have to drive one to know what they are like’ I can really relate to that, they are like nothing else- razor sharp 👌🏼 Awesome cars!!
Can't wait to get my GT4 this year, not done the final spec yet but am really struggling to choose between the manual and the pdk. Had a C4S in pdk and loved it. But love the extra engagement of the manual. Might just flip a coin

@@johnwheeler3019 Thx! I’m next on the list for a GTS 4.0 allocation. I know that I have time to make my transmission choice, but I’m very much undecided.
Someone somewhere must have a shorter final drive sorted for these cars. I recently went from a 3.15 to a 3.73 and it just brings a car alive (E91 330i)
Great video Joe, does it pull well in 3rd and 4th at low speeds, if it does I’m guessing it’s acceptable. Although the 2.0 engines lack sole they drove really well.
It’s much slower than the 4T low down in any gear. At about 5,500 revs they are about equal. Above 5,500 revs the 6NA is quicker. Not a fun way to drive everywhere - on a track would be fine.
The 4.0 has way more pull low down than the 4T cars! Tickover to a bit over 2k feels really meaty buy comparison. The 2.5T is dead down there! The 4.0 is a joy to potter about in at low speeds short shifting. As mentioned though, from 2k-5k the 2.5T feels faster, until the 4.0 can breath deeply and sing to the redline.
Nice feature! I drove the Boxster equivalent on my channel recently and loved it. There was only one thing, I felt the steering was great but lacked a little feel. Seemed setup slightly more for comfort than feedback... But, I may have been spoiled having driven a Nismo tuned 370z then an R8GT right before. Still, great car!

What an excellent catch Joe! The GTS 4.0 is my pick for this new 982 Gen. Thoroughly enjoyed this, with very good detail! Must’ve been a huge joy to drive it. Excellent video once more Joe!
Thanks buddy 👌
I have a 2017 manual M2. I put a deposit down on a 718 GTS 4.0. Stoked. It feels like you are slicing the wind while taking corners. Sounds amazing.
Lucky you. Manual or PDK? Enjoy the Cayman 4.0 F6 before they make them electric.
@@stevecade857 PDK. Part of the negotiations with the wife on getting the car was to get a pdk so that she could drive it as well, so whatever we were going to buy it needed to be an upgrade. Still keeping my m2 though.
@@jacebeleren429 Because of the gearing she'd only need second gear and could probably pull away in that as well. It's an auto really. No need to change gear.
Older caymans are cool but the shape and look of the 981 and 718 is beautiful
Great video mate. Nice to see your doing Porsche now too. You have done well since me asking you all the questions on buying my 135i. Your a top guy. Good luck man :-) happy Easter. 👍
Wonderful video. Nothing better than a high revving NA motor and a manual. I know your forte is German metal, but you should get your hands on an Elise, Exige or Evora before they end production this year.
Great first drive video Joe! Love the 718 GTS, great to see flat 6's back in the Boxster/Cayman line up. One of the remaining few great drivers cars of 2021 in my opinion.
Now this is a proper car unlike the New BMW M3&M4 great review by the way.
Love your videos 😂 I wish you could upload every hour 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you!
....looking forward to 3rd or maybe even 4th gear, next Cayman GTS video Joe! :)
great review Joe! love that flat 6 symphony 🤤
Thanks buddy!
Restores some of my faith in cars after some of the heavy stuff lately
Great car, my first drive in a 6 pot cayman was on track at Porsche silverstone and my overwhelming thought was just how sharp a car it is to drive compared to my old slk 55 amg I had at the time, just a brilliant drivers car 🤙
Another great video Joe any updates on the m3 arrival, and are you still keeping the mighty m2 competition???
Spot on with cayman 987 comments. I got my cayman 987 base last year and it makes drivers with poor driving skills look like drivers with great driving skills. Driven may 100’s of car and nothing compares to the cayman not even the same era 911
Great review pal!
Thanks buddy 👊
Not much of a fan of porsche's until the cayman was introduced that is pound for pound the best porsche.
This vs new M4 in manual for a daily driver?
Great review! I don't mind the longer gearing of my mechanically similar 718 Spyder.. 2nd gear makes it an absolute weapon for overtaking. There is plenty of torque and I easily find myself using the first 4 ratios for the hell of it on a back road. A Cargraphic Valve control unit is a must though.. lots of nice flat six noise to savour between 2k and 4k RPM. GTS/GT4 are epic!
Another top vid from Joe, yes I’ve said that before watching the whole video. Standards high as always
Thank you ♥️
Just a quick correction: It was V4 not a Boxer 4 the 718 has as its engine. Had alot of tech from the 919 Hybrid racecar but didnt sound anything impressive with the filters on.
Ohh I didn't know that, very interesting facts! Thank you, will repeat that when I have another 718 👌
@@JoeAchilles1 Anytime Joe!
Love the car very sportly very fast
Thanks for the review. Sounds good, but I think that I’d miss the pops and crackles of the 981 GTS.
What a beautiful car
Thanks for initial thoughts Joe - how Jules L from Sweden uses first alot in his 718 spyder - maybe that makes it more engaging ?
Great review as always. What would you say is the biggest difference between this and m3 (manual)? Which would you pick between the two?
If you do a more in depth review Joe after a few days would love to hear your thoughts on tyre / cabin noise. Just traded my 718GTS PDK 4-pot and placed an order for a D3s. I was so so tempted to order the 4.0 but just couldn't bear the tyre noise any longer on mine above 40-50mph using it daily for work.
It went back last week unfortunately, I didn't actually mention that, but it did suffer from tyre roar... Seems the 992 does too 😬
I just went GTS2.5 to a 4.0.
@@paulfrost9549
In a word, YES! (But wind / road noise is the same)
The sound alone is what everyone mentions, but it’s deeper than.
Awesome review Joe
That comment about the gear ratios reminds me that in my original 986 anniversary Boxster second gear was good for 74mph, third 106. Sadly no longer driving a Porsche
Yeah I remember my ex's 981 Boxster has a similar issue, 2nd was good for 80mph odd
www.carscoops.com/2020/05/porsche-admits-the-cayman-gt4s-gearing-is-too-long/
Great video Joe.. would you go 718 GT4 or R8 RWD?
Love the videos! Hope you get to buy a gt car one day!
Thanks man, me too mate 👌
The perfect car for a driving tour,
Right amount of power, right size, perfect 😎🤩.
Not sure about the colour mind!!
Totally agree mate, would LOVE this on a Petrolhead tour! As for the colour, it's basically your lambo mate 🤣😉👊
Great review Joe, when are you going to review a Panamera?
Thank you! No idea actually, hopefully at some point over the summer 👌
Torn between the PDK and manual 🤔 those long gear ratios in the manual might tip me towards the PDK. Thoughts??
Simple for me. If you are going to daily or track get the PDK. If you want a drivers car to enjoy get the manual.
Tough choice, you must be high up Porsche's list to have the option to buy a PDK GT4 👌
@@JoeAchilles1 I've been told it will be late this year on the new plate. Can't wait to get it mate as I've never driven a Cayman, let alone a GT4. Thanks for the content Joe, great stuff as always!
@@johnwheeler3019 So what was your final decision?
@@rdadams7507 pdk in the end, really happy with my choice!
@@johnwheeler3019 Thx! I’m next on the list for a GTS 4.0 allocation. I know that I have time to make my transmission choice, but I’m very much undecided.
Someone somewhere must have a shorter final drive sorted for these cars. I recently went from a 3.15 to a 3.73 and it just brings a car alive (E91 330i)
Great vid Joe 👍🏼
Great video Joe, does it pull well in 3rd and 4th at low speeds, if it does I’m guessing it’s acceptable. Although the 2.0 engines lack sole they drove really well.
Thanks buddy! It doesn't pull as hard as the 2.5 GTS did low down in gears, but still not bad and certainly quick enough for most situations.
Great video :) hasn't anyone tried to change the gearing ratios to make It a better experience?
Great work as always. 👍
You made me buy an m2c Joe. Now you make me want to buy this. Time to start saving 😂
Nice one Joe. Looking forward to the summer weather for all the videos! Is this over Wantage way again? Recognise the rusty tank and graffiti
Cheers buddy me too mate! Yeah near Wantage 👌
I really like that bright green Porsche and how much did it cost to buy?
Just a shame Porsche have deliberately hold it back so it’s not better than a 911
Nice feature!
I’d like to hear your thoughts on the GTS Cayman -v- Boxster; the latter is the only car I’d consider chopping in my M2 Comp for. Would you say cheerio to your M2C for one of these?
Hey Joe what's stopping you taking those opf filters off in the future, maybe then it'll sound like it should have been from the factory .
Still liking the green? Can you give us your reflection on it?
Is the seating comfortable on a long journey ?
Great vid as always, Joe. 🙌 Like many others, I’d love to hear how you feel it compares to your M2 Comp, and perhaps more poignantly given the price, a CS.
Cheers Jon, my next GTS video talks about my M2 comp compared to this etc.
Top! This is what I want! Only different green 😀🙏
