I own a 718 Spyder and I’m glad the car is ‘old tech’. I don’t like nor want the digital displays and no button (haptic) style interiors. I also love that it’s smaller than the 992, which is in my opinion too big now. It not being a 911 is just a thing said for bragging rights I think. I own a highly modified (997) 911 as well and the 718 Spyder/GT4 is still a great car.

Spot on, IMO. It's winter here in Wisconsin in the USA and my new-to-me 718 GT4 that I just purchased in October is stored for winter hibernation, so I found this video looking for more GT4 content. Really truly, great cars. I managed to get about 1500 miles on mine before storage this year and with the manual gearbox I love it. I sold my E39 M5 Dinan S2 package and my E46 M3 after buying this car and both of those cars were gems - I do not regret selling either of them. Kept my E92 M3 for a summer daily, so the GT4 is still going to be a weekend/track car, however, I fully agree that it's livable on the street. This car has the best manual gearbox I've ever used in 25 years of driving manual transmissions. Everything about driving this thing is wonderful. Due to the long gearing I find myself in 1 lower gear than i would in most other cars - I very often downshift from 3rd to 2nd and I love it. The car is so pure. Buy one now before it's too late

The gripe about gearing has never been about performance. It's about being able to shift more often (bc it's fun to do) and also stay higher in rev (bc it's a beautiful sound). With taller gearing, you have to pick one but you can't have both. That said, it's not nearly enough to keep me from hopefully getting a Spyder.

Excellent review. Porsche GT division cars and some GTS cars are a sight, sound and feel experience. You know you're alive when you drive one. The 718 GTS 4L and 718 GT4 easily punch the 911 Carreras ticket, these in 992 guise have become large 'feeling' and the interiors could be from any other german manufacturer. These 911s are more grand tourers than sports cars, the exception being GT division cars. Some of the best drivers cars ever built by Porsche, and in no particular order include 981 GTS, 981 GT4, 981 Spyder, 718 GTS, 718 GT4, 718 Spyder, 718 GT4 RS and any GT3/ GT3 RS. The common themes throughout, NA engines and outstanding handling without over reliance on HP. In other words they deliver a fully integrated driving experience whether it be on a country road or at a race track.

This is an amazing car but I went with the GTS 4.0 because it was easier to obtain and in my opinion, it is better for the street since I will never track my car. I get the same engine, manual gearbox, great suspension and many of the other goodies in a car that is 85 % of what a GT4 is. Great video!

For me the biggest problem with the Cayman GT4 is the Boxster Spyder. I am generally the coupe over convertible type, but the Spyder is definitely the prettier car and being able to open the roof up and get that sound more directly to my ears would tip me over the edge. Especially given that by all accounts nothing it lost in terms of perceived rigidity or weight between the two.

I can confirm this as I had a 2020 GT4 and now a 2022 Spyder. I was hesitant as I am a stickler for any chassis flex, compromised handling, squeaks/rattles. Because of this I went with the GT4 initially but then after test driving a friends Spyder was surprised that it was virtually identical to the GT4, Now having had it for over a year I can confirm there is virtually no performance loss whatsoever and the car is actually significantly more fun and raw feeling as a result of not having a roof

I'm a very lucky man financially and have tracked and raced Caymans and Boxsters and owned 10 different Porsches but currently own both a 2024 BGTS 4.0 and a 2021 GT4. The GT4 is a pure track toy that I keep in storage at SST in Danbury, CT and only drive to and from the track. Owning both I would NEVER consider buying a GT4 over a BGTS for road driving. First off even though the GT4 is hard topped it is WAY louder than the BGTS. Next the BGTS has the option to drive around topless which is fabulous. My GT4 has the LWBS, a roll bar and a harness. That would NOT be comfortable on a long drive. My BGTS has 18 ways with heated and ventilated seats. They are fabulous, but there is no way to get a harness with those seats which is nice to have if you're planning on tracking your Porsche. I do track the BGTS as well, but only drive 8/10s when I do so. I drive my GT4 at 10/10ths since it has a roll bar and a harness which combines with a HANS device as well. Bottom line if you're really in this market drive both a GT4 and a GTS because I own both and 100% disagree with this video. Check out my videos if you think I'm exagerating.

    Sorry but you're very bias.
The Atom and Caterham are raw and not comparable to the GT4, both in usability u mention but also thrill.
The GTS 4.0 is 95% of the GT4, its essentially the touring version, the GT4 has the aero for the edge on track.
It's a great car but this is a one way bias hype vid. The emira is a wait and see, no 5k mile reviews and it's a base model.
The gts is the pick. The gt4rs is the dream. The 981 for the engine and experience.

Both are great, manual and pdk.
The pdk is fantastic and had its benefits. It’s faster on road and track, has a tiny bit more torque and can be launched repeatedly with no issues.
It also has slightly shorter gear ratios and is great fun to go up and down the gears (albeit sometimes pointlessly 😂)
I timed mine at 3.4 0-60 recently which is impressive too.
A recent Nurburgring trip was delight, long boring 14hrs drive the pdk in auto at points was pleasant, but then on the track being able to short shift etc around certain bends was a real help.

I just traded my 2022 GT4 to a P dealer for his first allocation for the new 911 T. Why? Just too small inside for a guy 6’2” tall and 250 lbs. and the car is way too loud on the road - needs earplugs- and too rough on the road and as he says missing all the nice stuff that is standard in a modern car. Not a car for the road - just isn’t. And it is a track car but mine had a msrp of $135,500 - plus sales tax and registration still to pay. Are you really going to get that gorgeous paint job messed up on a track with rocks literally stuck on the tires of other cars that go off track getting thrown up at your car? And rocks being thrown out of the gummy cup 2 tires onto your paint as well? No. Too expensive and too pretty to make her do the dishes or vacuum - there are girls for the track and they are not that pretty and they can take a beating and have foul mouths but they are not the same girl you take home to Mom. I Mean car. - this GT4 has one primary use- drive it to your PCA regions cars and coffee and make your friends jealous like when you brought that stripper to your brother’s wedding as your date. The other guys will drool and they will try to imagine what it must be like on the road and in a negligee. It is for status with the other guys - period. And then you trade her in on a 911 with a manual transmission and for the cooking and making babies model. I did both.

Here we go again..."comfort" (something completely subjective) talked about on (another) review of one of the most complete sport cars there ever been. It sucks 🤮! No wonder the version on show has been specced with a pdk 🤢 A review based on useless points - what about this for a statement: "It is not a 911" [sic] I am sorry CAR Magazine but you have lost the plot. Easily the worst review (with a title that has got nothing to do with the "talk") I have ever watched from your end. The GT4 (rawer and better in its 981 shape and easier to mod) is a car which extremely strong wherever you look (it is not just the balance: it is basically everything and that includes the gear ratios on the manual boxes): I would say more: as whole proposition it is the best car anyone could buy on this planet with whatever the money and that is its achievement: it is not the most expensive, it is not the fastest, it is not the one that brakes hardest, it is not the one which is the most spacious...bla bla bla... but for all it is it is the best. ps for the millions out there who can't think outside the box then please do us a favour: stick with your 911s and leave the GT4s for the rest of us. Thank you
