I love your videos Echo!! You need to make more! No pressure….lol ❤
And YES bring back awesome points!
Can you please tell me what and where you got your hair color from?
Do you think art is for children?
If you work with OMS be careful. They may be odorless but their fumes are not non-toxic. Take a little container with a lid and put a cotton ball or something similar inside, and soak that thing with OMS. You can rub your brush on that and then close the lid again right away. Do not just use a bottle of OMS or dump a bunch of it in a cup, as it will evaporate and it is very unhealthy. Breathing in OMS can lead to irreversible memory impairment and nerve damage, applied to the skin it is an irritant, all the problems that are typically associated with solvent use. A less toxic alternative is Zest-it Pencil Blend, which you can order online or to simply, as Echo suggested, use rubbing alcohol.
I’ve had trouble with it and also oil and acrylic paints, they make my chest feel a bit tight so now if I use them, I wear a mask with A1 filters. 3M do some comfortable ones, but I rarely use things that need it cos it’s still annoying. Air purifiers aren’t for such tiny particles unless they’re next level expensive/industrial standards cos the usual ones are for bigger particles in dust, mites etc. I’m not even asthmatic, but probably autistic. I found so little info, but read of a woman who’d had a very bad reaction and would have had less issues if the mineral spirits had had an odour - her doctor said the lack of it let the toxic stuff into her bloodstream more easily.
Rubbing alcohol (IPA) and fingernail polish remover (acetone and/or ethyl acetate) also produce hazardous fumes that can cause serious damage with extended exposure. Not to mention all 3 are flammable. Please be safe people!
Good reminder. I really avoid because of it. Besides, all of them give me headaches.
Yup my first thought too was that it is a solvent.
Zest it is non toxic?
I am 70 years old , and when I was a teen, Venus colored pencils came out and they were amazing! They were creamy and true to color and depth like the paint on pencil
Also, if using oms or having a bottle of isopropyl alcohol/nail polish remover/etc isn't an option, colorless blender alcohol markers are a great alternative. Especially if you want to travel with your supplies. I just purchase the cheapest ones I can find and keep a couple with my pencils. I have them for different color groups as the only real down side is the nib does stain
I was just scrolling down to see if anyone mentioned colorless blender alcohol markers. I just scribble mine on a piece of scrap paper off to the side between color groups. Yeah, the nib gets pretty funky looking, but if you make sure there's no pigment left on it before you move on to another area then you're still ok.
Thanks to you both for these awesome suggestions.
Came here to say the same, I just use my colorless blender on watercolor pencils and its much less mess than water and works great. :) (Copics in general are really nice for blending watercolor pencils.)
@@LuthienNightwolf that's a great point! I like to use a colorless blender with my Derwent inktense pencils. I don't use regular watercolor pencils often, but if I did I'd choose the colorless blender over water. I love that it's less likely to warp the paper.
@@angeladonoghue9010 great tip for inktense, thanks!
A long while ago I saw someone use Vaseline for their colored pencil drawings. They would lightly dip the tip of the pencil in the petroleum jelly, and it created a very similar outcome.
This is a fantastic tip! I took a college course in design drawing and mineral spirits was a required item. Makes a HUGE difference in making your work look clean and complete!
I went to college for art and I'm wondering if I was just never paying attention or my college just didn't bother with some of the techniques I've learned since I left
Echo if you use masking tape your paper won’t warp while painting with water color
I also learned from a landscape artist that he lightly brushes both sides of the paper with water too before taping down ☺️
In the 1980s I had "Paint With Water" books, where you would see, on the picture, these sort of dots and lines of pale color already put there. If you painted it with water, it would spread it around to fill the space. When I grew up, I found aquarelle pencils and crayons, which basically do the same thing - draw the line, then paint it with water. I LOVED them. I don't have any with me at the moment, but I was always so excited to buy a huge box with as many colors as possible, and they were expensive, but they got beautiful results. I wasn't very good at drawing with pastels, but I liked what I could do with the waterpaint crayons and pencils.
Ancient memory activated. Thank you for this visceral reminder of some of the happiest times of my childhood.
@@radnowonward Those waterpaint books were great!
Yes! The awesome points!
I personally like to use colored pencils on top of my marker illustrations to add extra shading, texture, and details. I'm not a huge fan of making entire drawings using only colored pencils, but maybe I'll give it another chance using these tips!
Yes, colored pencils are perfect for combining with other media. I enjoy using watercolor pencils for finishing details on my watercolor paintings. I
They're the perfect combination because it's easy to blend out any mistakes with a quick pass of water.
I do the same thing, just the opposite! I LOVE how markers blend the pencil, especially alcohol ones.
Great video Echo; love small tips like this
Just a little recommendation - with mineral spirits, and acetone: Use near an open window, not great in a small well heated room in wintertime. Those vapors eat your brain faster than a runner.
A few of my favorite art channels is drawholic and Artology and how they're able to get the results of what they draw with COLORED PENCILS and other traditional supplies vs just using digital art should be thoroughly studied. The fact that both channels were able to get a thoroughly detailed Sonic the Hedgehog drawing complete with making it look like they individually drew every hair/quill on that hedgehog is incredible. They've also drawn/colored in Toothless very detailed, the Iron Spider Suit like....GOD With COLORED PENCILS. Blows my mind what you can do with em.
I understand the sentiment you have with the "should be studied" comment but i can't help but giggle because that's what the study of art IS, so in a way, it already is being studied -- by the artists and anyone else who feels inspired by their work on a technical level.
I just found out not too long ago that there were artists that could create amazingly detailed works of art, before digital art was even a thing. Like that Michelangelo guy and his painting on that ceiling? He did that with a paintbrush and paint by hand! No tablet or anything! Didn't know people could do that back then.
Oh wow. This is incredibly useful. I'm somewhat new to colored pencils, but my secret is spray fix. I lightly mist the drawing with fixative, let it dry, than add another layer of colored pencil. The spray helps it both blend and make the colors pop, especially white. With spray fixative you can even draw a completely black space, spray with fix, than draw over the black with white colored pencil.
I’ve forever been under the impression that I could never make my coloured pencils work unless I bought Prismacolours. I have a ton of Crayola watercolour pencils that I never used for that reason. I’m really glad that I can make use of all of the art supplies at my disposal and have them look just as good as my beloved Prismas
I'm surprised that I can even blend the Crayola colored pencils smoothly without using anything ._.
Thank you for this, especially the circular motion advice!
I am extremely heavy handed and have wondered often how to make my colored pencil art look as nice and smooth as I see from people often.
Also, your art style is adorable!
I didn’t know about mineral spirits! I knew about nail polish remover but this seems allot better
I would blend my watercolor pencils with q-tips on multi-media paper. If i was drawing faces i'd color in where the blush would go first and put a layer of the skintone on top. I'd also look up contouring guides to get an idea of what parts of the face got more depth with what shading
I haven’t been on UA-cam in AGES and I saw this was posted less than ten mins ago and immediately clicked xD also the awesome points took me BACK but I also just realised are they the original dabloons?!? I wonder how many awesome points I’ve gathered over the years…
This is hilarous actually. I got some Crayolas over Xmas (I use cheap pencils like that for sketching because I hate how normal pencils smear and smudge so easily) and I was drawing and coloring in some doodles with them 2 days ago and out of no where I thought "Hey I wonder if Echo has a 'Color Pencil Hack' like that Crayon hack video?" Cut to now when I pop in on youtube and this video is starring at me from my homepage recs. LOL Bruh...
Our phones listen to us. It’s scary
@@MimiYuYu Well in this case the phone would have to be reading my mind because I didn't say anything out loud. hehe
Didn't know about mineral spirits. But I did know that the white colored pencil can also be used to blend. Obviously leaves a more glossy finish, but great for peeps who can't find or don't have nailpolish remover, isopropyl alcohol, etc.
Same. I prefer that glossy finish actually. And depending on the color, sometimes I just use a lighter color so a lighter blue if I'm using navy, or a tan with brown. Things like that.
It's prob safer than breathing in the nail polish remover fumes, too!
If you use watercolor paper, you can use water and paper won' t bend at all. -Especially if you stretch it first aka tape it down and go over with wet brush and then let it dry. Also there is that one way to let colored pencils to soak up in a hot water first. -It does some pretty amazing to some of the colored pencils. Colors come deeper. ( To watercolor ones I don't recommend it. ) Also telling watercolor from colored pencil apart is that they usually are marked with a tiny brush symbol. One way to make colored pencil coloring smooth is to use burnisher pencil. - and it is definetelly on the non-toxic, non-chemical side. ^^ With chemicals you should remember to use them in well ventilated areas and/or use proper mask. They are also flammable. I probably do not need to say nothing about that they can use headache, naucea and dizzinyess, drowsiness etc. Am someone who gets that heachace from nails polish and nail polish removers too. I would not recommend them for small children to use. Like no offence or anything, those materials just are that toxic and harmful to health.
I have a sketchbook just for swatching all my mediums and label the marker pack for example then label the colors it makes finding colors or texture you want for the piece your working on much faster/easier ❣
Thank you! Colored pencils are so much more affordable than other mediums. I made all our Christmas cards this year, and I colored them with colored pencils. I knew there was a hack from watching your last video on this topic. I ended up using alcohol ink blending solution, which helped, but wasn't the best.
Thank you for offering this coloring page!
Bring back awesome points!
I've been watching your stuff since your channel started! I'm glad your coming back with more frequent content! ❤️
I have been obsessed with figuring this out for years, years of my life until this moment. I was always told the circular motion was enough but I knew that there had to be something else, I Knew It. THANK YOUUUU
I didn’t search for this. But I’m so happy I watched it! Thanks for the tips!
Definitely going to try this!
I wish the comparison samples between the one done by common use of colored pencils and the one done using MS was left on the screen longer.
When I was at school we learnt to use water with regular colored pencils. We also always used water color paper. The best pencils were Caran dash pencils but they were expensive. The good with them was they did not need a lot of water.
wow this might be the thing to get me to actually utilize my art supplies and sketchbook that have been sitting around untouched for ages
Love this tip!!! I use colored pencils a lot and never knew this!! Thank you!
When you mentioned awesome points at the end, the nostalgia from your older vids hit like a bus.
I love this! Such a simple, easy method. Holy cow. I'm just now learning this at 45. Haha. Wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I love making watercoloring books! They work SO WELL for so many things.
Awesome points!! Yay!!
Yay awesome points are back!
Blessed by the awesome points!!! 💜💜💜
Omg I used to watch you so much when I was younger I'm so glad youtube recommend you to me again, I'm glad you haven't stopped posting
It’s been years since I watched one of your videos. I love that the red and black it’s still the main color and that you’re doing art!! Completely forgot how many awesome points I have but starting with 500 feels good XD
So glad to see you’re still posting Echo
Awesome! Definitely going to have to try this! I love using colored pencils but am rarely happy with the results of just using them alone.
This was really cool, thanks. And yes, please bring back awesome points, I love seeing how many I’ll get at the end.
i remember watching the crayon video when it came out omg this is mad! coloured pencils are one of my fav mediums now too :)
First time viewing and incredibly impressed with your savvy delivery, knowledge & easy to understand instructions. Thanks!
I used a colorless alcohol marker (like the ones for blending) and it works really well! :D
Awesome points make me happy
I love the hair and makeup!
i definitely appreciated the awesome points
awesome points were always my favorite part of your videos and it made kid me happy
yes....awesome points. I can't tell you the last video I watched till the end. thanks for the info and the links.
Looked great
Also wanted to say, your idea of awesome point at the end of the video, is something we now use with our son. He often struggles with staying on task and other issues so randomly he now gets awesome points for been helpful or doing an extra job. They are just the points but he loves them and every time we give more points he adds them to the amount he has in his head, I'm so impressed at his memory lol
Just wanted to say thanks, he loves it
new awesome points??? in the first echo video i watch after some time??? hell yeah
Yay more awesome points. I missed them.
I love awesome points. If you bring them back I can replenish the savings, I accidentally spent them all. Awesome video as always. Thank you Echo
Thank you for the tips, Echo! Happy New Year to you!
Love the bunny merch - waiting for my tee 😊❤
Thank you for the awesome points! I'm not an art person. I "watch" your videos as pleasant background noise while I work or game. Your positivity makes the videos, imo.
Yeahhhhh awesome points are back 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yay awesome points!
I can't wait to try this, I've always struggled with coloured pencils
I love the awesome points :)
Love your channel and your personality. Subscribed!!
This was great. Thanks!
Dang it, now I’ve got to pull out all my coloring stuff! Thanks for the awesome tips! ❤
I have a bunch of pencils and wanted to know for the longest time on how to make them look good. So watching this was really useful, I might try it out. c:
Loved this, thank you!
Awesome points Yesss
So that is how you get your coloring pretty smooth looking. Yea, buying art or craft supplies in Bulk is a thing. I do the same. Ty for the tips.
Woah! Your channel was one of my favorites when i was younger on my old youtube account!! it’s so nice seeing your videos again omg
I use a white pencil to blend the colored ones. Works pretty well too.
First video of yours.... And I love you. This is great, fun and I'm here for it!
Happy New Year, I love awesome points
I think I learned something new with colored pencils. Thanks for the awesome tips!
First time coming across your channel. Lovely, thank you.
Happy New Year Echo! And thank you for the awesome points XD
Echo! Your skull inspired me and now I have a blacked out skull on my art wall!
Wow, notifications actually worked for once! Hiya, Echo.
I love your tip videos. I always learn so much. :)
So far I tried your crayons tutorial and liked it. Show me more!
Candy wife is actually a character from flapjack maybe that’s her when she was younger
I love this!
This is cool. I never like painting. But always used crayons. Dude, your amazing. Thanks for sharing
Wahoo! Part 2!!!
I love awesome points! And this was really cool 💞
Fun! Thanks for the points!
I love to color as well ☺️
This reminds me. Color My World has great recipes for color pencil bases. Apparently they make blending your pencils on top of them much easier than just on the paper itself.
Thank you!
This is a very cool tip! However much like with your crayon video, ultimately unhelpful to me specifically because i actually like the chunky texturey look of plain colored pencil and crayon. I don't mind white spaces personally. Still cool to see your thoughts on this method though. Someone else in the comments also mentioned alcohol marker blenders which is something I use rarely when I don't have a skintone marker and use colored pencils instead. I've noticed it tends to work the smoothest with lighter colors, though
Great tips, thank you. I do prefer a blending pencil though as there is no odour or risk of spillage (I am clumsy so panic when using blending fluid that it may end up all my carpet!!)
aw awesome points. I missed them.
Ohhh stumbled upon your video. Thanks for the cool tip!
Happy year of the bunny!
Happy New Year=) Have a good one=) Great video Echo; love small tips like this=) Just be careful with such substances, they still can be dangerous.
Just found your channel and I love your content 🙌🏼
500 awesome points!🙌🏻
Thanks so much for the tips, I never knew this! :)
Thank you for the tips on the water color pencils. This is something that they never taught us when I was taking art in school. If you are using nail polish remover, be sure to use plenty of ventilation. The Acetone in it will damage your kidneys. The alcohol is also called denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol had a bit of a different chemical composition.
Acetone inhalation is only really dangerous in high amounts or for prolonged periods. However, still using in a ventilated area and/ or just using a small amount at a time of any of these kind of solvents is probably recommended. We used acetone all the time for cleaning when I was in the chem lab and were never warned about kidney damage. Unless you're drinking it you should be ok.
I usually buy non acetone nail polish remover, however that’s also because when fixing up or customizing dolls made of vinyl, acetone can ruin the vinyl.
Bring back awesome points!! Yeah!!!
Cheers, happy New Year.
