Anatomy Of The Combat Handgun

  • A combat handgun is something that is subjective. That is to say that what I consider to be the ideal combat handgun may be different from what you might consider to be "it!" Consider what I'm saying here and make your own decisions.

    LONG LIVE THE GLOCK 19!!!
I’ve been finding myself really enjoying this channel a lot lately. I enjoy your teaching style and picking up on some facts and hard truths here and there keeps me looking around for more.
I got a recover 2020 brace for my 19 after watching a few of your pdw philosophy videos. I’ve only had it for a few days but I’m blown away with the potential it has. Putting it through its dry fire paces in and around my house, truck(especially this one!!), and home range. Slide mounted optic really helps make it feel more capable. Most of the other “reviews” were guys at indoor shooting bays thinking of it more like a range toy/gimmick. To me it’s another tool in the chest for my g19. Also this is my first braced item so I’m still in awe of how gamechanging this is for my training and my systems.
I heard you mention it in one of your videos and checked your website to see if you offered training classes specific to the “handgun pdw” system? Is training in person something you no longer offer?

I must say I love glock. I own and carry several of them but... Shadow systems and zev have changed the game. My shadow systems has all the grip mods I ended up doing to my glock19. I love my Glocks that I own but I did have to texture it, grip hump reduction, trigger connector, thumb ledges, double under cut, beaver tail mod, removal of finger grooves, and magwell. Alot of the same mods he did to his glock. The mr 920 is the only handgun I believe is truly ready to go out of the box.

Definitely a fan of the 19 and of Glock pistols in general. There are several UA-cam channels I subscribe to from men who actually hunted and killed other men for a living and the fact that each one shoots and recommends Glock pistols is all the proof I need of their superiority as fighting handguns.

I’d love to see you review a P320. I started my carry career at 19 yoa with a 1911, then a Glock 23. When I entered LE, I carried G35, then a G22 (Gen 2 & 3). Though I absolutely love my stock G22 Gen 4, I’ve found the Meprolight front sight is too wide for fairly precise shooting at 25yds. I installed a set of Dawson Precision tritium sights on my stock G17 Gen 4, and problem solved. After my first attempt trying to like the P320, I grew to love the M17. When the M18 came out, I said, meh. Then I tried it and shot both concurrently several times. I love the M18. IMO, it’s the Honda Accord of the EDC world; It just runs and runs well! People will argue the ridiculously huge rear sight. While I thought the same at first, training taught me it’s a moot point. My M17 is my secondary EDC and part of my HD plan. The only thing I’d change out is the front sight post to facilitate headshot type precision at 25yds. I’m back to the issue I had with the Meprolight sights. While excellent for close fighting, it lacks (IMO) in headshots at 25 yds. At that distance, my front sight is about 8 in. wide.
Some will hate the MS (manual safety) on a polymer pistol. That’s perfectly fine. God Bless America and our “freedoms” to carry what we want (with some government permission/restrictions). I use the MS when holstering AIWB, then place the MS on fire. Never had an issue w the MS inadvertently going back on safe. When I stow my M17/18 in my “hot safe,” they are hot and MS on safe (My ARs are cruiser ready). This gives me the added piece of mind for the bump in the nights that awaken me/ us should I need to grab (a pistol) and go investigate after waking from deep sleep.
One county police agency I worked for in GA, I lived about three miles inside the neighboring county. The apartment complex was like living in the Mog. I slept w my duty pistol in the bed unholstered which wasn’t the best idea. That’s when I realized a MS would be a good thing. When my wife and son came about, we ended up moving to a safer area.

The Manual Safety on the M18 is the whole reason I bought it. With all the lawsuits against the P320 I wanted some extra assurance. I just recently found out one of the original suits where the guy was walking his dog and came home and ND’d in the holster hitting his backside/leg while taking it off was due to the fact that the holster was for a P250 and not a P320. We had a Hawai’i Sheriff have a holster ND but no one really knows the actual truth except the two Sheriffs in the Patrol SUV.

Got rid of my 'Block' 19 Gen 4 for a Beretta 92fs and I am better off now not having brass hitting me between the eyes every other round. After carrying the (M9) 92fs over 20 years in the Army it just fits me and my training after all those years. Ya both gen 4 AND gen 3 glocks were both having major btf issues for the first 5 years or so when gen 4s came out, especially running bulk commercial ammo.. They ran, but it was annoying. Seems like they've gone away for the most part tho, or at least not as bad with gen3/4's now. The gen 5s don't seem to have the problem. I picked up a gen3 19 back in 2017 and it's works perfectly after thousands of rounds just like my older 2006 made one.

The G19 is a fine weapon. I had too many training scars from using a Sig P220 so the Glocks always pointed too high for me. When I decided that the muscle memory wasn’t changing for me I went to a Sig P250 and it has been a fabulous weapon. No more muscle memory issues, a hammer pistol on a DAO action with no safeties to defeat makes it a winner.

What are your thoughts on the m&p shield plus? Since the latest Supreme Court ruling on concealed carry I was able to finally carry legally, "after an exspensive 8hr HQL course and then an even more exspensive 16hr cc course here in Maryland". I chose the shield plus as my cc tool. I'm currently in the process of testing different defensive ammunition through its short 3.1" barrel. I've always chronographed rifle rounds mainly just out of hobby for reloading but I've now started chronograph different defensive 9mm loadings. I recently contacted a bunch of different companies and asked them what the optimal velocity is for their designed round to operate most reliably. So far only Federal & Hornady has gotten back to me. Hornady gave me actual data while federal only gave me recommendations per my 3.1" barrel saying all HST loadings would be optimal with 124g +p being best which is weird because that seems opposite of what research I've been able to acquire elsewhere.... I've heard you mention multiple times you like to stick with 115g due to its ability to defeat different types of armor due to velocity but would you still have the same recommendation when dealing with such a short barrel? If so, what 115g loading do you most prefer? Love your videos and all of the free and trusted advice! I've learned quite a bit through this channel and it's much appreciated!

My carry experience as a Tier 1 Citizen is around the Glock 19 and the Glock 17. I have found great success in carrying 115 grain projectiles. They do their job quite well. I couldn't really say how they would do out of a short barrel because I've never carried anything smaller than a Glock 19. However it bears noting that I used to carry an S&W Bodyguard in .380 as my backup piece when I was a cop. I once had to put a deer down and when I shot it with my .45 cal with 230 grain Winchester SXT it literally looked at me after the bullet passed through its head. I then shot it with the .380 and it blew a chunk out of the head and the deer instantly switched off. So yeah I have zero issues with small guns for backup purposes. Just consider that small guns are terrible if you have to stay in the fight for a while.

I have a baton 2 and on the 1000 lumen setting I can only seem to get about 5 seconds max before it drops to the previous setting of 600. To the point that I never even bother with the 1000 lumen setting. 600 will last 30 seconds it seems before it drops to 300. I actually think that’s more or less to prevent damage to the light itself. As 600 plus lumens heats that little flashlight up (to uncomfortable levels) very quickly.

I don't get Glock fanboys. There are plenty of handguns that work reliably out of the box that have good triggers cheaper than Glocks that newbies can start with until they learn what frame size, carry method, carry location works best for them. Ruger Security 9, Ruger EC9S, and Canik TP9 SC are all great examples of inexpensive starter pistols that, if one was to carry a Glock later, are still fun to keep at home and shoot at the range.

The SIG p229 is far superior to any Glock made. The price point of the two is vastly different but the SIG comes right out of the box ready to fight. The 226 and the 2229 are world renown for their quality, craftsmanship and reliability. Polymer versus metal, metal for me anytime.

    • @Tier1Citizen
      @Tier1Citizen  Рік тому

Back when Sig Sauer Gmbh was a thing, yes, they were known for quality, craftsmanship, and reliability. But Sig Sauer USA is less than its namesake. Quality is not in their lexicon which is why they have so many issues that seem to be found for them by us, the buying public that gets used as guinea pigs to help them find their problems.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Sig Sauer. I was trained on a German Sig P226 back in 2000 when I attended police academy. We spent 2 solid weeks running 600 rounds a day through those guns. They never once had a misfire and the only time we ever cleaned them was on the last day of class. So I can attest to the FACT that the German made ones are beyond awesome! But from an ergonomics and reliability standpoint not even they can hold a candle to a Glock. I've attended training classes that put us through muddy water, gritty mud, and in some cases the weapons were even stripped and thrown in the dirt and we had to assemble them then fire them under time constraints. In those cases I sas Sigs go down, but not the Glocks.

    Groo here
There is a difference between a fighting handgun and a combat handgun..
The 9mm ,single or double stack makes a good combat handgun ,, light, easy to shoot and hit with ,, but usually a secondary or backup to a long gun.
The target need only be driven off and is usually 2 legged [ but comes in packs] you know what you are fighting and is needed to be effective.
A fighting handgun would be your sole gun ,, and needs to be able to protect you from 2 or 4 legged attackers ..
The larger heaver guns and hotter/ bigger/ heaver ammo being normal..[ one good shot to stop ,turn,or drive off the critter... target could be anything and this is all you got...
Each has there place and there is some overlap , but they are used differently.
The combat gun is usually used in a double or tripple tap manner where as the fighting gun usually is shot once or twice as that is all the time you have..[ charging critter]
For a personal defense gun [like in town] the 9mm auto is fine, when out on nature a "little more" may well be required.
Combat = against persons,,,,, Fighting= come what may,,,,,

I use the overpriced surefire cr123 non rechargeables in my x300 and x300 ultras, even though cheaper batteries work. I use them a fair amount and the batteries last a long time for me. I like to shoot varmits at night around the house and in the timber with my glock17. The light gives you plenty of time(noticeable decrease in brightness)to change batteries before they become unusable. I’ve never had one just flat out die. I let my old x300 go all night, constant on, on a moderately used year old set of batteries with a very noticeable decrease in brightness(but still very much useful). After several hours it was about the same brightness. Next morning it was still on but it was very dim and not usable for weaponlight standards. With my experience with surefire x300’s, i very much disagree with tier1citizen’s opinion on pistol mounted lights. I wouldn’t put any other light on my glocks and will always have them on my glocks. The advertised run time on these lights is probably how long the advertised brightness lasts. The slightly less bright, way more than useable brightness, lasts much longer.

Especially since people are getting the dumb idea of "knock down power" out of their heads when it comes to handguns where you really have to jump way up see a substantial difference in energy that matters(as opposed to say 9mm vs 40sw ect).

Battery failure? It’s not that hard to change batteries once or twice a year. I have an x300 and two x300 ultras. I’ve abused the x300 for ten years and one of the ultras for four years. No problems. Several friends with same experience. Plenty of light even with near dead batteries. It’s way easier shooting raccoons and opossum in the dark with both hands on the gun. There’s no comparison! Didn’t you post a video around a year ago about how you were going back to the 17 from the 19 because you could hit targets from further away with the 17?

Guys who say they don't have battery issues don't actually train as often with their lights as they think they do. My experience as a third shift cop and my stack-load of night training, AND my employment in the tactical lighting industry back what I'm saying. The mindset of "it's not that hard to change batteries" will always bight you right when you really NEED that light to work. Ironically this is far less of an issue with handheld lights. I used to work for INFORCE and we did exhaustive testing on not only our lights but our competitor's lights too. What we found was that "vampire power drain" was a real problem, and it worsened when the lights were being carried around as opposed to just being time tested. One of my jobs was just living with lights in my pocket, my EDC bag, in my vehicle, and on my weapons. I daily, handled various lights, I dropped them from waist height onto various surfaces, bumped them on the lens, carried them against keys in my pocket, took them in and out of hot and cold, sometimes left it in a broiling hot car and/or left them in the fridge overnight then warmed them up quickly to check seal integrity against condensation. Obviously this was done after the lights had been dry purged with nitrogen so as to reduce as much internal humidity as possible. You can't get a solid test if you've not done the prep work properly. The point is that testing is what I do and all of that experience is what has led me to say "yep, I love weapon lights, however, when it comes to EDC carry, I'll stick with a handheld."

It's then that I say "you may to rethink the 1911 idea until you've actually RUN the gun HARD." Every class I've attended where there's a 1911 being run we end up taking extra breaks because the gun causes so many issues that the instructor and student end up having to deal with the gun while the rest of us jam mags and hydrate.
