      @Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines you're dead wrong about that. Do you recall something about a perfect score of 300 awarded to Mentzer when he won the Universe. Mike had the goods, but couldn't stand the crooked judging and the ugly side of the sport.
      I heard this right from Mentzer when I had lunch with him one day.

      @Old Skool Bodybuilding Routinesno, sonny boy. He did win. He won the Mr. Universe with that perfect score of 300.
      '80 Olympia and even worse, the' 81: We alI saw the pics of the show splashed all over Muscle & Fitness. I did not have Arnold in first in any instance. Legs, legs man. Heck even in his prime during "Pumping Iron" you could hear one of the guys making jokes about Arnold's legs. That problem only grew (ironic use of the word) as Arnold aged. In '81, Franco was not #1. So there are two facts - Arnold's "gifted" victory in, '80, and Franco' s gifted victory in '81.
      I don't give a rat's ass about either show, just as I was no longer a fan after 1979.

    There is a an interview on the Internet where Arnold talks about the 1980 Mr and he says it was a mistake for him to enter the show. I can't recall his reason but I think it was something along the lines of he really didn't have much need to compete again because he already had proved himself.

    I always wonder how this would have affected Arnold's career if he ended up getting like 5th place in the 1980 Olympia. Breaking his winning streak and affecting all the promos for him in Conan The Barbarian coming up. Plus all his ad venue as top champ in the magazines. Seeing an alternate reality to what really happened would be such an interesting unfolding of what may have happened for many of bodybuilders continuing careers. Especially Mike Mentzler, who probably may have competed for many more years. Such an intriguing what if.

    • @lateralus2199

      So true. Mike Mentzer winning the Olympia would have changed the trajectory of bodybuilding and the Olympia forever. But it was not to be, as former competitor, Roger Walker once said "Arnold flew over in his own plane, with his own film crew. They followed him to the toilets, showers, everywhere. They were here to promote and publicize his new movie. There was NO WAY he was going to lose, and everyone knew it."

      @Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Jealous? Not at all. This is an accusation levelled at Mike Mentzer constantly. That Mike was pissed at Arnold, that he was jealous of Arnold winning.
      If you listen to Boyer Coe, at no point did Mike think or say he should have won. In fact Mike cited a couple of other competitors who he thought should have won. He was unequivocal on the fact Arnold should not have won, just like virtually all the other competitors.

      @@booty121212 There were others with weaker legs. Look at the guy to his right, though might have been the only one. It's just that Arnold's lower body didn't match his upper body, he wasn't evenly developed like Mentzer, Dickerson, Walker, Padilla, for instance.

    • @MIK23458

      @Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines on the contrary the bashing came from Arnold. When Mike and his high intensity system started challenging Arnold and Weider’s system of training it didn’t go down well.
      During one seminar Arnold tried rubbishing Mike’s philosophy, unbeknownst to him Mike was in the audience. Suffice to say Arnold did a backtrack that if it was a moonwalk it would have challenged Michael Jackson.
      Arnold was all about Arnold and Weider was all about Weider. That’s why they got on so well.
      When Arnold was given the floor to make his point about why he wanted the two classes abolished. His reaction was to act like a petulant child bereft of anything meaningful to say. Which is why he accused Boyer of acting like a child.
      Boyer wasn’t annoyed he found the whole incident bizarre. It was Arnold being Arnold. Or as Mike put it ‘a big Prussian son of a bitch trying to walk all over us’.

      @Mantastic-ho3vm Yep, when I heard Mentzer followed Skalak's example I was pissed off. He left all his fans over one loss proving it was never about his fans but all about himself and his fragile ego. Others were crapped on by the IFBB such as Padilla, one of the most under-rated BB's of all time. He was way better than Columbo. But Padilla never quit. Padilla was the short version of Arnold IMHO. Then we have Lee Priest. He never quite over the IFBB crapping on him. Look at Jay Cutler. He got second to Coleman many times before finally dethroning him. Then lost one and came back to recapture. With Jay, it's all about the fans, even to this day with his Jay Walk series and heading to Romania in August as a guest poser at 50 years old. Love these guys.

    Arnold won but barely. He was off and his legs were down in size. He was cut though and with his stature and structure he pulled it off. Being Arnold and being taller in height with his great arms and shoulders and great calves from the rear he looked like the winner on that stage. As a bodybuilder myself what you look like standing next to another person does not have any bearing on the judging. It matters only what you look like from the judging table and with the comparisons to one another. The fix may have been in on Arnold to win. But he did barely but actually won.

    Although Arnold had much, much more potential than Chris Dickerson he shouldn't have won in 1980. Mike Mentzer wasn't conditioned enough to win the title. He was too flat but I put it him before Boyer Coe.
    Frank was very conditioned but he lacked of size although if he had won with Arnold I wouldn't have surprised too. Chris was in his top condition and was complete in comparison with Arnold. In 1981 the best competitors were Danny Padilla and Roy Callander but Frank Columbu won ! Even Tom Platz and Chris Dickerson were better than Franco and deserved 3th and 4th place. Frankly, Franco could have fought for 5th place with Jusup Wilkosz and for me Jusup was also better.

    All the talk about Arnold being 'small' in 80, but he still made nearly all the rest of the line up look like boys by comparison in terms of his chest, traps, arms. His legs were definitely weak, but to me he still had the best upper body there. But I know plenty will and do disagree. That's the thing about bodybuilding, et the end of the day it largely comes down to personal tastes and preferences....I don't know of a single Olympia win that you won't find others who think someone else should have won. But, it's fun to keep the conversation going 😁👍🏻

    • @TheLusianPopa
      @TheLusianPopa 3 роки тому +4

      this is isnt a question of taste or preferance
      he had no lower body, that is a too big a flaw to have. Its not like say dorian who had a torn biceps which is visible in ONE of ELEVEN mandatory poses( semi relaxed and muscularity rd).Weak legs are visible in all damn poses
      the ideal body has to be more or less balanced, he was not balanced
      his chest was way too big compared to his delts, his biceps were too big for his triceps and forearms, his upper body dwarfed his lower body and his thighs were too small compared to his calves.
      Arnold never had great balance inb that regard. But at least early 70s his legs were so glaring, still weak imo but here they were atrocious.

    • @stevenroberts5741
      @stevenroberts5741 3 роки тому

      LucianPopa I don't disagree with your points, his legs were clearly really weak in 80 and certainly no where near the level required, as you say, even with personal preference taken into account. All I saying is that some of the criticism has taken on the level of hyperbole at times and that due to the absolute focus on Arnold (and him not being good enough) there doesn't seem to be much balanced discussion about the flaws in the other competitors: of which there was plenty. So don't find the discussions overly balanced.

The former had a better physique but was shaky during posing and Dickerson, as usual, had a great routine. I think Roger Walker was overlooked: dense and ripped with no weak points...look at his back, legs and
    abs density compared to Arnold! I would of given him 3rd.

    Thumbs up and already subscribed. Always like John Hansen's Podcasts. The simple hard truth about the 1980 Olympia is the world found out 80%of Arnold was still better than everyone else. Hard pill to swallow, especially for people with small ego's but it's the truth. Arnold was blessed with better genetics not just in being taller but also his perfect "bone structure" proportions but also Arnold is a sculptor/artist like Rafael or Miachael Angelo, how? he sculpted his body with weights instead of clay. What do you mean? He did what in my "Professionally trained Artists"community is we know as inner shape balancing. I don't get it, can you illustrate? maybe, the laymen don't understand but here it goes: In art school we draw about 600 sketches per semester, bodies, faces etc., we get sick of it, but one thing we learn is how to "balance sweeps", for example Arnold's trapezoid is long and begins the upper sweep, then its interrupted by his mid body and it gets picked up with another sweep in his lower back, where if you made an imaginary path line it lines up perfectly, perfectly, let me say it a third time, perfectly. Most bodybuilders either don't' have that sweep or have it 'miss aligned, or unequally in size, they don't even look for sweeps never mind train to mind them. Now factor in that there are sweeps "all over" the human body that we artists have to draw with 'construction lines' first which we later erase when we draw in the actual muscles. Arnold has "ALL of these sweeps right", in the right begin and end, in the right balanced size for both sides, and aligned on top of it!!. So in 1980 he still had ALL that "symphony of shape" just a little smaller than usual is all. So what? he still had it and so he won. The reason you will always have controversy is because most people can't draw and never will. I picked up a pencil at 5 years old and could draw, it was already there, I duplicated the comics in front of me in seconds while ALL the other children in the classroom could not, only bad draw sticks and circles, still took years of schooling and training to train my eye and what to look for and understand human shape. Most people not only do NOT have the eye, they also don't have the training. Sadly, many bodybuilders were born with muscles beginning and ending in the wrong places proportionally, so they will never achieve that "symphony of shape" no matter how hard they train, how big and defined they get. Very much like a guy with short legs and a long upper body will never be able to change that curse no matter how big he gets. Men don't like to face those facts, but nature is nature, it's what it is. Arnold won because his parents were up on stage competing with the best GENES out there, and he was up there having developed those genes to 80% of their potential which was still better than everybody else, if not as good as his usual 100%. That is the 1980 Olympia explained for anybody who with the guts and courage to accept it. Stuff with a marker and simple photos of Arnold I have explained/shown to family and friends only to watch their faces light up when they see it. I should probably set up a channel where I show this, will probably get a million hits.

    he did win politically but I still think he looked the best on stage. Not in individual pictures but his posing next to others on video. I don’t think there’s 1 Mr Olympia that won without controversy.
    But that being said... I’m a huge Arnold fanboy, but I’ll admit Arnold woulda won in 1980 even if he didn’t train for it. He coulda came on stage with a gut and woulda won. That’s the power of politics and having the right connections.

      No one talks about it because it has nothing to do with nothing. We would merely be speculating.

      Actually Arnold trained for over 6 months. The director for Conan the Barbarian wanted Arnold to get his body weight up to 230 lbs where it showed him as a older more massive individual. The director asked Arnold if he could get up to that body weight and he said he could. Arnold trained hard and was on a split routine. Contrary what other people was saying about him. Arnold was unable to get up to that body weight. He was long, lanky, skinny and malnourished looking.
