Seth Rudetsky told the story this week that Vivian and Sam Levene were supposed to sing "Sue Me" from Guys and Dolls .. but he feigned illness at the last minute so that Vivian could sing Adelaide's Lament. The director or producer of company (can't remember which) saw her steal the show, and just based on this performance, cast her as Elaine Stritch's replacement in Company. Pretty Amaaaaaazing! As Seth would say.
Just a miraculous performance. What a voice! Check her in "Greenwich Village" with Don Ameche and Carmen Miranda on UA-cam for a straight ingenue performance. I could hardly believe it was the same actress.
+vanzafaust I liked the movie, although it was quite plain to see that Brando and Sinatra were only in it to attract an audience (an actor who couldn't sing and a singer who couldn't act)
She's the gold standard for this. Spot on wonderful!
Wow!!! The great Vivian Blaine singing this song so many years after the Broadway play and the movie....SENSATIONAL!!!
Bravo!!!
The great Vivian Blaine! I've never seen the stage presentation, but in the movie, Miss Adelaide was simply delicious! Thank you for this video.
Wonderful. Vivan was a beautiful doll ❤
Thank you so much for posting this! It was so Great to see Vivian sing this. What a real treasure.

What a charming performance!
Vivian was sensational as Adelaide. No other actress came close.
Pamela Anderson
Great. The greatest musical and she is a queen. Brilliant.
It's too bad so little of the song is included here, but it's enough just to see and hear this great actress performing as much as she did.
love love love!!!!
Vivian had cancer when this was shot and she wanted this to be recorded for the history of Broadway!
+RImusclebear1 I thought she died of heart failure
+Jon Vanner I don't Know I thought she died of breast cancer.
nope, congestive heart failure
She didn't die until 1995
@@MrSwifts31 Yup.
Love how it was opens by Lumiere

Presumably the number was extended and given more lyrics for the movie - because she doesn't sing the passage with "..'see note.' See Note?!"
This version has been cut. Sadly. The movie was dreadful. Even Bushel and a Peck was left out.
the "see note" part is in the actual song performed in the movie and on stage, I think they just cut a verse from this performance for time

I liked Barbra way better in this song. This is cute but sounds a little artificial to me
