Its one of those things thats okay because nobody stole the back back from his no look throw. Im sure some teams practice this stuff.
True, but he throws it high enough that no one could possibly get it until around the free throw line extended in the back court with around 2.5-3 seconds left. They'd then have to dribble or pass and launch a half court shot at the buzzer for a best case scenario on a play where everyone is not in position. If he gets fouled, he goes to the line with about 5 seconds left, Louisville is still down only 3 if he makes both shots and has more time to execute something they've not only practiced but have the opportunity to set up for. I would take the WORST case of what he did over the BEST case of him rebounding and getting fouled any day. Its not a given that Louisville gets to the ball first even if it doesn't go out of bounds.

I wonder why more teams don't do this in these situations. The only thing I would have done different is threw it way up higher. That may have completely run the clock out
Genius play. A few years ago, a similar kind of thing happened in a Florida State vs. Duke game, where the FSU player was falling out of bounds with 1.5 seconds left in the game, he tried to throw it off the Duke player, but it hit the Duke Player and then hit the FSU player who was out of bounds. Duke got the ball, scored, and won the game. If the FSU player had just throw the ball straight up in the air, time would have expired.
I think he could have turned around and launched it even a bit higher in the air to take more time off the clock. But still, genius. Sign of great coaching.

I just want to know why in the hell the ball would go to where it left his hand. This commentator is evidently experienced enough with basketball to do a televised game and should know the basic rules. This is similar to the Lakers Clippers on opening night game a couple years ago where one of the commentators was trying to say that it should be Lakers ball because Patrick Beverly knocked the ball out of bounds off of LeBron’s hand, but it was Beverly who knocked it out even though LeBron touched it last. Watch the clip if you don’t believe me. It’s honestly pathetic.
Pretty sure the commentator had it confused with the rule that if a throw-in goes out of bounds untouched, the ball _does_ go over to the other team at the spot of the original throw. This isn't a throw-in, of course, but I think that's what he was thinking of.

So back to my original point. Execute the play next time and there's no argument. By missing it, you gave them an absolute chance. Had he held on and gotten fouled the probabilities change, and its hard to determine the way things actually play out.
@@toddhaynes4361 We can know that time stops immediately as the foul happens, and that there was one player coming toward to him foul. So we can say with good knowledge that there would have been at least 4.0 seconds left, that is not a speculative subject.
You also keep saying that there was still a chance - thats only true if you count shots from own half. How often those go in, one in a hundred? So by throwing ball to other end, he gave his team 99% of winning. If you dont think thats the best option, then I'm sorry but you have misunderstood something here.
Can't spell "Louisville" without L O L
Lol now because Louisville will have the last laugh 😉
@@bobbyyoung4243 That's a good one, but you can't spell w/o those letters 🤷
I remember doing this in like the 3rd grade AAU and my teammates looked at me crazy at first😂
That's outstanding situational awareness...props
after watching this video, what virginia did against furman in the tourney makes more sense
Awesome! Nice play to chuck it the length of the court
Juston is one of the most underrated players in the country.
Smart play to avoid being fouled, although more lift on the throw and it was has sealed it, for sure...
That was a brilliant play!
I'm still lmao with the expedition game vs "whoever the f that was" that wiped the floor with them.
I've always wondered why this didn't happen more often
Bellarmine University is a private catholic university in Louisville, Kentucky. They are in the NCAA- ASUN Conference. They were an NCAA Division 2 school in athletics in 2019-2020.
Smart player..see its NOT all about flash and 1 handed catches. its also about knowing the rules and using them to your advantage..
I wonder why more teams don't do this in these situations. The only thing I would have done different is threw it way up higher. That may have completely run the clock out
Yea that would be the best way to do it. As we see in the video, Louisville still had a chance to win it.
That announcer sounded like he was desperate for that to be a different rule. Lol
Very cool play, I remember see an old 70s nba clip like this. Can’t find it tho
This is like icing in hockey, but without the resulting defensive zone faceoff. Smart play.
Now they can say they own the city.
There's going to be a documentary about this team one day
I'm still shocked Chris Mack didnt work at Louisville
I think he could have turned around and launched it even a bit higher in the air to take more time off the clock. But still, genius. Sign of great coaching.
That’s why it’s not allowed in hockey. This was brilliant.
It hurts a bit for me for sure. I had the over 135½...
Normally like to throw it a little higher
when you somehow get the football and a linebacker is barreling towards you
to be a D2 school and within 2 years beat a national champion within the last decade is amazing
Bellarmine student here! Roll knights
Smart play! I like the innovative thinking.
fucking clever play
A very *smart* decision 👏🏿
That’s just BIG BRAIN basketball right there…eliminates the foul tactic, even of L’ville got to the ball, they would’ve had to turn and launch from 92ft…just high IQ play
what an amazing play wow
Brilliant, that is what we call a "heads up" play.
Good thing FSU’s not the only team selling on opening day vs fcs teams
BELLARMINE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE FB LOLLLLLLLLL
This is one of those plays you wonder about as a kid
Big brain play there.
Great to see bellarmiane finally getting attention. I’ve been a fan since d2. As soon as they are eligible for the ncaa tournament mark my words the con be DENGEROUS.
Love love love athletes who are also students of the game.
I never understood why more people don’t do this
I have always advocated for this specific play, he tossed the ball a couple feet higher and it’s perfect
I've thought players should do this for the longest time! Super smart!
1000 IQ Move.
Imagine perfecting that like a coffin corner punt and it stays in bounds lmao
A new rivalry the City of Louisville. Wow!
PS: School named after Robert Bellarmine. That man is a Saint and doggone smart.
Its never been a rivalry. I live here and both have always been cool and support each other, fans get along etc... I love em both. But after the game last night Bellarmine seems to want it to be a rivalry. Maybe the new Cincinnati/Xavier.
Bellarmine has always been chill. They wouldn't be able to handle the smoke anyways.
It's hard to believe what has happened to U of L basketball since 2013.
And Sam Houston state over OU at OU in their season opener
Dude also put his team on the map. I never heard of Bellarmine before.
You haven’t? They are pretty good. Beat liberty to win the a10 conference in its first year of d1 but can’t join the tournament due to transitional period
Bruh Louisville has been playing them for years
They are a smaller school In Louisville Ky, there campus is 10 minutes from my house
It’s the university for the Archdiocese of Louisville. They only moved up to Division 1 before last season.
Heads up thinking .... could the same thing not be accomplished by tossing the ball straight up? I assume as long as it doesn't strike the ceiling/lighting it'd run the clock out just as effectively
“He’s scrappy, intelligent. Hard worker, high motor, real lunch-pail kind of player. Smart. Knows the rules, high basketball IQ. Blue-collar work effort. Just a real, solid player.”
Surprised we haven’t seen a lot more of this typa play
Because people usually hold it and take the foul
Interesting heads up play. Had he given the ball a little more air time maybe the clock would have completely run out.
