"Not only do you have the power to change your life; you're the only one who does". So straight foreward, yet so profoundly true, and i think people innately know this, but trick themselves out of it by, like you stated before, blaming the world and expecting someone to save them because they feel entitled or deserving. And wether you do deserve better, no one will change it but yourself. I wrote that quote down immediately. I just found your channel, and am finding inspiration from your videos. Powerful messages(especially the being miserable one lol) shamefully admit i fall into several of those pitfalls, but am intently focused on making a better life. Thank you for making this video, it brought me great insight into what my core problem might be. It made me understand why I function the way i do.
As someone who is brought up by a narcissistic parent I developed great extent of dependency on them . This dependent personality was fed deliberately through helicoptering & controlling.
The only thing I was handled control & ownership over is my academics, being an A+ student was a way to exercise power over something in my life, it was what identified me ..elevated me & my broken self-esteem in my overly critical patent eyes and everyone else's.
I built my only social circle & interactions through toxic competitiveness with my schoolmates!!
It was the only thing that gave me a sense of self & purpose maybe!
The only thing i was held responsible for & I couldn't fail. Until i failed.
I was brought up in an environment where I could only have an *external locus of control* that centered around my parents.
I was never taught how to fend for myself or hold responsibility - unless it's time for criticism, blame or guilt-tripping!
In my 2nd year of high school I fell into burn out depression, i was totally consumed & burnt-out from years of pressure, anxiety and OCD.
I tried to get through it but the depression settled in.
I'm now diagnosed with severe Major Depressive Disorder.
After I failed my academics i lost every bit of *internal locus of control* along with self respect..
Been cursing everything & everyone that got me to where I am right now. Including myself.
    Angry at myself without understanding.
I fell down a rabbit hole of lamenting & dwelling.
It's been 10 years. Haven't achieved anything in my life.
Maybe i am a victim of my parents' upbringing, maybe alot was indeed out of my control.
But now i understand a little better.
Understanding is the first step to change , right?

True: you're probably able to work your way out of a bad situation and the only person who can. Also true: most times you will fail, even if you put in an insane amount of effort. The "power to change your life", then, is the willpower to start the process again and again, knowing that if the next outcome is a new failure, it will feel even more bitter. And you will have slid back somewhat in the time interval between a failure and the moment when you've gathered enough willpower to start all over again. Realistically, I think there's only so many attempts that people will find the strength for until they give up. This is why I think motivation and pulling yourself by the bootstraps only go so far. At some point, the unluckiest people either have to be cared for structurally by the rest of society (return to the external locus of control) or just abandon their current life altogether to try out a different mode of existence in another environment (kind of taboo as it's scary and not in the society's interest).

I really agree with what youre saying. though i feel that having both an internal and external locus of control at a properly balanced level is even better. While it's good to be proactive about things and not hide behind a wall of helplessness, there is some good in believing that some times things are just out of your control. Having too much of an internal locus of control can be overwhelming at times of great decisions, it could feel like your life is hanging on every moment. That could lead to perfectionism. That's why I believe balance is key in all things in life

A great way to suffer from a serious depression is trying to take control of everything in your life. I have been diagnosed with depression when I was 28. I was working my ass off to "grow" and "be the man I was supposed to be". Cool job, cool money, no parents around. Girlfriend, social life. So what happened? After 4 years of therapy I realized that this life is empty for me. Working almost all day, bringing work home, forcing motivation to do so. Away from my parents, my relatives, my friends. I realized I was just a slave from the system walking in circles. The circle could get bigger and bigger, but was a circle. No time for fun or joy. Months without seeing a movie, without having a good weekend, without pression. I left the job, came back to my city and opened my little business in here. And guess what. I'm not depressed anymore. Fuck money, fuck fortune, fuck ego. Give your mind a break or it breaks you.

Dude, what about people who dont put themselves into a hole, but rather are put into a hole by someone else? Doesnt sound as fair to just expect them to climb out on their own and just try hard as they are being pushed deeper (into debt, joblessness, depression, etc).

@@nicoslavia1 it's completely not fair, and that's not really the point of this video. If you're in that situation it sucks and it's horrible, but the only way forward as an individual is to focus on the things you do have control over and work on them (and in the process it's totally fine to grieve the shitty things that happened to you)

Good stuff, but whenever this kind of "personal responsibility" advice is given, you see it used in a way that implies that "those people" should take personal responsibility. It's great advice if you use it for yourself, but it's not a great way of understanding others. For myself, I try to have an internal locus of control. For others, I try to apply this: "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always."

    • @brittanyrachelle23

Yeah I was thinking the same thing too. or else its like we put so much pressure on others, not feel that empathy for them, and our expectations for people rise which isn't fair to do since we can't control others and they have there own life how they want to do things. I love what you said, be kind always, and people will see that in us too and naturally cause a positive impact in their life. Thanks for sharing that thought.
