Arun Majumdar, who recently stepped down as co-director of Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy, is on the School of Engineering faculty. One excellent way would be to get rid of all the energy intensive linear programming in Windows. Another would be the reduce the graphical screens and animation in Windows that are unnecessary and consume energy being so.
I started my career in computing in the 1960s. I ran a computer that did payrolls for over 7000 employees weekly. We did chemical math modeling to manage plastics production facilities more efficiently. The computer we used had just 8K of storage and 1K of memory.
Compare that to your phone and consider how much work you can get done with it besides making and taking calls. Most of the computing power is wasted doing graphics to entertain, amuse or feed you commercials to buy more stuff we don't need.

I like what you say about most of climate change and how we can reduce or solve the problems with rising temperatures. One thing I wonder though is why we need to eliminate all 51 Gtons of CO2e emissions, when we have a significant drawdown from land and ocean to offset around 20 of them. Even in the IPCC recommendations they have said that Carbon Neutrality 2050 is the recommended goal, and that would only need a 19 GtonCO2 reduction to reach carbon neutrality. This sounds more feasible than the 51 that is claimed to be necessary to cut by 2050.

This is my problem with Gates' plan: It doesn't propose any fundamental shift in the way we relate to the planet. We can keep driving cars they just need to be electric. We can still eat burgers they just need to be 'impossible" burgers. We can still run our air conditioners they just need to be solar powered. We can still build with concrete it just needs to be "green" concrete. We can still cut down forests they just need to be "sustainably" managed. We can still fly airplanes they just need to use bio-fuels. Basically: we can still live the way we live today and consume what we consume... we just make those products "green". Gates' proposals are much easier to accept than more "radical" changes. But sooner or later we will be forced to make "radical" changes to the way we live. Gates' ideas are not the way to avoid climate disaster. They are a clever marketing strategy aimed at consumers who are awakening to the unfolding climate disaster.

It follows that if every roof is painted with a highly reflective white it would reduce the energy needed for air conditioning
Also it should take energy out of the atmosphere and reflect it back to space.
The eruption of the volcano in the Philippines resulted in a drop in temperature of the atmosphere by 2 C by reflection which is more than
could be achieved by reducing carbon emissions.
A lower temperature of the climate with a higher carbon content could well produce more plants and bigger yields of food.
This would be a great solution.
