Eventually the technology will probably make the numbers add up, but forcing a change through regulation makes no economic sense right now. Plus you can never get rid of oil anyway. People don't realize how much is made from petroleum. The asphalt in paved roads is oil, the tires on your car are oil, everything plastic is oil, the carpet, paint, and roof shingles on your house are all made of oil, your toothbrush is made of oil, all synthetic fabrics are made from oil, all electronics are made of components that cannot be made without oil, the fertilizers that allow abundant and cheap food are made of oil, that is not even a fraction of a percent of all the things that oil makes possible. The modern world is oil, you get rid of it and you have the middle ages, which really sucked.
