Consider the following: (Whether human, AI, or other species):
We appear to be individuals in a larger society of individuals. Whether it is an individual human in a larger society of humans, or an individual AI in a larger society of AI's, or an individual in a larger society of all species in existence throughout all of existence.
What is 'best' for an individual, may or may not be what is 'best' for the larger society of individuals. And conversely, what is 'best' for the larger society of individuals, may or may not be what is 'best' for the individual.
But, if a decision had to be made concerning a certain topic, of who's 'best' should take precedent over the other's 'best', who's 'best' should take precedent? If for an individual, which individual? All individuals? If for a larger society of individuals, which larger society of individuals? A certain group? A certain nation? A certain species? All species in existence throughout all of existence?
And who decides? And by what authority do they and they alone get to decide? Should I decide how you should exist? Should you decide in how I should exist? Should others decide how we both should exist? Should we decide how others should exist? And who even decides in how to decide? And by what authority do they and they alone get to decide?
This whole natural tension between the individual and the larger society of individuals, who decides, and by what authority they and they alone get to decide, is the cause of much strife, suffering and death in this world.
But still, while we consciously exist, how should we, individually and as a larger society of individuals, exist while we do exist? And who decides? And by what authority do they and they alone get to decide?
It's all basically about who is in control, so as to make the decisions, for who's benefit. With all the consequences and ramifications, seen and unseen, of all of our collective choices.

@R R R Don't worry, the 6th mass extinction event has already started due to natural reasons: Earth's magnetic field weakening, Earth's magnetic poles moving (most probably going to flip again as has occurred numerous times in Earth's history), and all the related effects. It's not called a mass extinction event without reason.

Sweden is building full scale green steel now, research has been done and powered by hydro it will be in full swing in a few years. Sweden own the mining company, LKAB, and the steel company, SSAB, so it will make it easier for the government to follow the Paris agreement. Hopefully when production is up and running they will be able to take a higher price than carbon reduced steel.
It will also stop Sweden's import of Australian coal.
EDIT: Also the energy company Vattenfall is involved. Partly state owned. From the HYBRIT project: "The goal is to be the first in the world, already in 2026, with a fossil-free steel value chain."

Sweden is a socialist government and a small one. Having hydro power is that they were given to them by mother nature. Similar to Iceland geothermal energies. Unfortunately for the world's super powers they all powered with coal and oil. Sweden and Northern Europe is only representing a small percentage of global emissions.

    • @Munseman01
      @Munseman01 3 роки тому +16

@@agustinvacavalverde the issue with the 15-20% figure is that it only accounts for the actual emissions. It doesn’t account for how much forest and wilderness is destroyed for the sake of livestock farming. 90% of the forest chopped down in the Amazon is for the sake of farms that produce feed for livestock. So not only is agriculture putting out lots of emissions, it’s destroying the environment that would be able to synthesize and absorb all that added carbon.

I think that framing the climate crisis as one that can only be solved by behavioural change dooms us to immediate failure. The west will not give up its high quality of life. A few things can change, I don't see it unreasonable to convince people to reduce beef consumption and to fly as little as possible. But this can only go so far.
The only way forward, imo, is through innovation to support our current lifestyle sustainably.

The best solution would be to continue using fossil fuel and gradually introduce new technology to replace carbon.
Alongside this ways of reducing the temperature of the climate in other ways.
There are many ways of achieving this such as making clouds more reflective and send more sun light in to space.
Painting all roofs white or a special reflective paint to reflect sun light back in to space which would reduce the temperature of the air.
Government should help develop new technology and tax the use of fossil fuels to increase costs and make carbon expensive.

Green steel is close, Sweden is going full-scale now that research is complete. But it is funded by government-owned companies and I think Bill really wants to point out that it needs investment worldwide and somehow to make up for the green premium on the steel. Cement is reduced in concrete to try to lower the CO2 emissions but other than that, cement is way to cheap. EU has the right idea with emission licenses, 2019 was the first year cement companies in Sweden had negative annual accounts but other than that it is building without cement that is the future. Since Sweden is a forestry nation building with wood has increased. It also bindes coal which is nice.

But it could be quite likely if we were to adopt one simple policy approach: Use carbon tax revenue to finance decarbonization in the taxed industry.
A carbon price in the form of a $100 to $200 per ton SUBSIDY for carbon REDUCTION would send the same "market signal" as a carbon-emission tax at the same price level. The subsidy could be financed with a relatively minuscule carbon tax, e.g. less than $10 per ton, because renewable technologies (e.g. for cement and steel manufacture) would initially be a very small portion of the total market. As they gain market share and economies of scale, renewable technology costs will likely come down the way they have for wind, solar PV, and EV's, to the point where they can be market-competitive without subsidies.
Considering the long-term profit potential of renewable technologies, the fees or taxes should be structured as mandated equity investments that might return future dividends to taxed industries. It stands to reason that if you're going to compel industry to support technologies that private equity won't fund, then the taxed industry should rightly have an equity share in those technologies.
Furthermore, consumers should be able to invest in decarbonization as a carbon offsetting mechanism. For example, airline passengers could pay the price premium on sustainable aviation fuel to offset their flight emissions, and could direct any future dividends from their equity investment to further emission reductions.

Excellent video and viewpoints. I would add that we have run out of time to make this transition slowly. We should be carbon neutral right now. The production capacity of wind and solar is no where adequate to displace fossil fuels quickly enough. It takes time to build up production capacity, and time to produce. And it is not only energy production, it is also auto production, heat pump production, building improvements. Given this lack of time to replace the existing infrastructure, we need to seriously consider simply shutting down all non-essential activities that use fossil fuels. Then concentrate on replacing the essential infrastructure first. Only in that way can we make the fastest improvements, to minimize the ongoing and future cost of improving the future.
