    How do you make power factor for NRL Hunter matches? What even is power factor? I decided to take an in-depth dive to make this concept easy to digest.

    It's NRL hunter and they allow up to a 16lb rifle, completely defeats the series. Anyone who hunts with a 16 lb rifle drives right up to their stand and sits. Not 1 of the guys competing in open heavy actually hunts with their setup. All I do with mine is take off the muzzle break and put on my suppressor, otherwise I go from competition to deer hunting with the same rig. There is enough leagues that allow heavy rifles not sure why nrl hunter had to do it.

    I'm not an expert reloader but I had always thought that if a guy could get a slow load built with cool burning powder in 6.5 PRC he could get the barrel life and lower recoil when it comes to matches then use a faster load for hunting

    I just shot a NRL Hunter match in Great falls with a 6.5 PRC with a power factor of 462802. I cleaned a few of the stages as did others and I was top shooter on the stage because of the PF. Now, the PRC is not an ideal NRL caliber because of recoil, but its what I have and shoot and have supplies for. Shooting 153.5 bergers @ 3015.

    I have to read more up on the competition as far as scheduling. But I’d love to shoot a .308 or 300 WSM! In my factor Savage 10 or a Browning if I can find one chambered in 300 WSM.
    I realize 30 cal will probably produce a lot of recoil relative to the required power factor. Very interesting!
    Thanks,

    • @marcmoore4115

      It does seem like that's what they tried, but I just checked, According To Nosler data, a .25-06 with a 24" Barrel can push a 125 @ 3150fps with spicy loads. If you can get it to 3200fps, it's at a PF of 384 000.. the .257 Weathery Mag can push a 125 @ 3400+, meaning it gets well over 400 000.... but .25 cal is unfortunately not available enough to make it worth it imo.

  • @wr3921
    @wr3921 2 роки тому +2

    Not familiar with N555, but have burned some H4350 and 6.5 StaBall in a few different chamberings including 6.5 CM. I'm curious how you came on those charge weights with both powders. Using Hornady data, you're 2 gr over max with your H4350 loads and 147gr ELDs, while being more than 1 gr under max for Staball and the same bullet. Similar situation for the 140gr, except you're only 1 gr over max for H4350, but still more than 1 gr under max for Staball. Wondering if you tried higher loads in StaBall? In my experience with a variety of bullet weights, it likes top loads.

    • @wr3921
      @wr3921 2 роки тому

      @Travis Fox Interesting, you've certainly got to read the signs and load to your individual rifle. I wound up around 43.6gr StaBall under 143gr in Starline brass, didn't see pressure until around 44gr. I'm running 140gr Gold Dots a little higher, and in lower capacity Peterson brass (51.7gr measured capacity vs 53gr for H and S). The other thing I've noticed with StaBall is that it seems to be more sensitive to humidity than some other powders, I dried out a batch and saw pressure spike pretty significantly, brought it back to ~50% rh and it started acting right again. So if you're in a dry area, maybe that could contribute to some of the difference.

    I think it sucks that there is a weight penalty
    if you can win a tie with a higher power factor, they should just enforce a maximum ratio of weight to power, sliding scale
    more power allowing more weight otherwise, is this really Hunter?
    sometimes you need a win mag or a 300 prc and you're not going to take a light rifle to make it work

    If I were competing, I'd use my own rifle and say (Expletive Deleted) the equipment race. I built mine with a 03-A3 barreled action fitted to a Fajan stock. Chambered in. .30-06. I doubt that I would need 220 grain bear loads to comfortably meet your power factor. I don't know what your course of fire looks like or at what range you'd be shooting at. You should have included this information. Perhaps handloads duplicating MILSURP M2 ball might be better if some shots are taken at 500 yards. You failed to mention if full patch bullets are okay or if you require softpoints.
    Where do these matches take place? As an Army veteran, I am interested in anything that involves shooting.

      M2 spec ball comes in with a power factor of 420000 so it easily exceeds what is needed. It would be cool to see someone run something unique like that, although personally I'd load up some 175 grain SMKs for competition. That bullet at a mild 2650fps actually has a higher power factor than the M2 load and will be very easy on both your old rifle and your shoulder, as well as giving you a much better BC

    The StaBall loads listed seem to be contrary to physics, in that, with the exact same powder charge, and 7grs heavier projectile, it achieves 40 fps greater velocity.
    While 40 fps and 7 grs are not in themselves huge differences, in this type of comparison, they are, and not only that, the difference is in the wrong direction, so there has to be another factor not listed.
    The friction between the different projectiles, if the same diameter, couldn’t produce this, and would have to be well over .001” greater with the 140 gr projectile and easily noticeable. Was the temperature during these tests enough different to cause this? Is the projectile length with the 147 gr example enough to decrease internal volume and increase cartridge pressure?
    Whatever the cause, it’s significant, because both increased mass and increased velocity increase inertia that must be overcome.

    • @RangerCaptain11A
      @RangerCaptain11A 2 роки тому +1

      the higher grain bullet is heavier and larger, specifically length. the overall cartridge length stays the same (magazine and chamber parameters) so the lager bullet is set deeper into the brass, compressing the space the powder burns in, causing more gas to push the bullet.
