  • Explaining why it important to check the crankshaft end float, and showing how it is done. This was done on a 1995 928 GTS but would apply to any of these cars with automatic transmission.

Martin, exceptionally clear and concise video that showed me exactly what I needed to know. Excellent display of proper techniques and attention to details. If there was a mechanic possessing anything close to your expertise near me, I would never have to perform any maintenance on my vehicle as I know it would be done correctly. As for the quality of the video and presentation, it is refreshing to see such well done and professionally executed camera and voice. Great job and thank you.

Great video. Whilst i was aware of the flex plate problem i was not aware of possible movement at the gearbox end. I have owned my 928S4 for ten years and have never heard anyone mention it.

1989 S4 with 48,000 miles. The rear has never been checked, but it will be at the next service.

Nice video, I'd give my left wheel nut for a lift. Couple of points you didn't mention. This is only a problem with automatics, fitting a ritech or similar clamp is an option for peace of mind and you could put studs in the two rear bolt positions as access for nuts is easier.

I did mention that it is an issue particularly on automatic cars, but I could habe made more of it. I'm always aware of the length of videos and try to get the important stuff in without anything extra. As for the clamp. I do know of them but IMO what I have done, and yearly checks which take a short time, are much cheaper and as effective in the long run.

Tanks for your video. The transmission shaft on my 928 GTS was even heavy bent. You can check yours next time you are in there by spinning it. I could see the problem on one end of the shaft more clearly than the other. May I ask which torque on the bolts which connect the crank shaft and the transmission shaft? Going to check now your other videos. Thanks again and best wishes from Taiwan

Great video. Thank you for the tutorial about what’s what. Are you a mechanic? What would this cost to have a mechanic do? Or how many hours did it take and what parts needed replacing? The exhaust gaskets, anything else?

Thanks. Just the gaskets needed, but if you leave the rear two bolts out you won't need those next time. I would also change the pinch bolts on a first time check, just because they are not expensive. I'm not a mechanic, I just work on my own cars for fun, but would think maybe an hour or so. This is my first 928 so no idea how typical the state of my exhaust bolts is, but from 996 experience, the longest part of the job could be getting those off.
