- James O'Brien questions the intangible consequences of the Israel versus Iran conflict as Israel reportedly launches retaliatory strikes.
Iran's air defences were triggered early on Friday in response to reports of explosions near the city of Isfahan, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.
Explosions were heard just after 5am local time in the central province of Isfahan, Iranian state media has said.
Air defence intercepted three drones in the region, with no major damage sustained to buildings or facilities according to reports.
Tensions between the two states were raised following Israel’s air strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1 - a strike that killed 13 people, including two top Iranian generals.
In response, Iran fired around 300 miles and drones at Israel on Saturday, the majority of which were shot down by Israeli air defences.
A senior Iranian official has now said the country has no immediate plan for retaliation against Israel.
There has been no confirmation of the strike from Israel following reports of the explosions.

As an American, I hope to see my country independent from Israel one day.
Why hope ? We should pressure them . We are a weak people driven by our own material needs.
I hope to see the UK and Europe independent from the US
No chance mate AIPAC run the your country. Your government gets it's order's from Bibi. The American taxpayer funds Israel but the Israelis walk all over you it's embarrassing really.

Maybe don't arm a bunch of proxies (Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthi's) to orchestrate attacks against Israel to begin with?
Israel too. Why use proxies to launch missiles to Israel before Israel acted terribly?
History will remember this. US vetoing against ,and on the other side talking of two state solution. Real hipocrisy and sickening.
Yep that was a real pos move by the us
the us will no longer be the primary power by then it'll be a Chinese translation
It has always done so, going back decades, and their rationale was it had to happen through a negotiated peace process, but of course, that only ever applied to the Palestinians. The US-pushed partition plan of 47 was supposed to create two states and an interstitial zone, albeit it gave most of the land to the Jewish minority, the bulk of whom were recent immigrants. It was a terrible plan on multiple levels, but it involved a two-state solution.
Since then the two-state solution has been purely rhetorical. The US has continued to support Israel no matter what it does with only minor scolding now and again.
American are alway supporting Israelis brutality against Palestine children
U.K. abstained! The country who illegally took away Palestinian land to give it to Zionists Europeans with no links to that place!

2. Showing the hypocrisy that emanates from the above point when those certain countries give pathetic so-called answers to questions posed to them.
It also showed the world that they are a major threat to Israel. Finally they changed the equation, or rules of engagement, to include massive attacks in retaliation by Iran.

It is absurd if - like James - you don't understand geopolitics and dismiss the Iranian regime as a bunch of 'headbangers'. This was about the USA NOT wanting a war in the Middle East because Ukraine is much more important to them and because we have an election year in the USA. Neither to the Iranians want a conflict - BUT Netanyahu DOES. The USA has given him a Green Flag to ATTACK RAFAH in exchange for not widening the war - EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED. Iran achieved their goals - strain the US-Israel relations by costing the Iron Dome defence system $2B in a time when more Americans are questioning why so much US money is going to Israels defence and all it cost Iran was a few $100k
Iran has shown such strategic patience and now has totally rebalanced the Middle East. It was a shocking change of circumstances for the settler colony of Israel. Second passports have never been so readily available for the overly entitled European emigres.
James you don't talk about the first attack on by Israel on Iran killing several people. You don't talk about what happened prior to Oct 7 and you don't talk about the nakba but like to refer to the holocaust. Double standards
James is scared of being described as 'antisemitic' as a lot of British people are. Why they allow 250,000 bellicose people out of 67 million to terrorise the truth is beyond the comprehension of many observers abroad. Fairness reaches a point where it becomes crass stupidity. Outside UK goldfish bowl there's less navel gazing and the reality isn't obfuscated by jaw-jaw ad nauseam by politicians and journalists whereby the meaning gets lost. It's a true British trait and extremely irritating.
Iran has shown its to be far more classier than Israel its allies. Their embassy was destroyed and 7 people killed. In response they showed Israel that they could respond and had that right, but avoided killing anyone.
To be honest that trivialises it. Israel is the only nuclear state in the region, there is no symmetry, no mutually assured destruction. It has been trying to get the US involved in war against Iran for years. It recently struck an Iranian consulate in contravention of international law. People did die in that first attack. So no, cute names for it are not especially appropriate.
Iran basically had to walk a fine line here. It's goal was to be able to say A) We've shown our capabilities (even if no real damage was done), B) We won't tolerate attacks on us, C) We don't want escalation with a nuclear power that genuinely might decide to use them with no real fear of consequences.
Israel's retaliation against the retaliation was more in the emotional category, but Iran basically had no choice. Otherwise it would be sending the signal that when Israel attacks it, as Israel has done before this, it would just do nothing and let it happen.
I would certainly ask whether your attitude if you were in Iran's place would be any different. There are after all two alternatives. You could do nothing after a number of your people were killed on your own de jure soil, or you could try to deal real damage and risk escalation. Which path would you choose?
Exactly, I searched 'natanyahu UN' and found some 11 years ago clip with him saying 'how dangerous Iran is'. Middle East is NOT the problem, ISISrael is.

The US has never forgiven Iran for nationalising its own oil, from American companies.
two madmen in a cellar full of petrol both with a box of matches, trying to get the other one to strike a match fist
Iran has been under sanctions for years and was probably irritated at the international response to Israel's stike on their diplomatic mission. Their strike was as much an economiconeas much as a military one. It cost zero lives but $1bn+ and that is a high cost no matter how you look at it. It probably cost Iran only tens of millions at the most.
Israel attacked Iran numerous times until Iran retaliated with a strike of over 300 missiles. Iran achieved their objectives by now knowing the locations of their countermeasures. Iran also bled everyone financially because it cost Israel and her allies over a billion dollars to stop most of the missiles launched which only cost Iran 10’s of millions dollars in comparison. Iran notified the US in advance of launching missiles so that they could start the expensive task of stopping the missiles which were only launched to attack military airbases as opposed to Israel attacking civilian locations.
Face saving?! Does that disappoint u guys? Does your british hunger for destroying lives never lesson ?

I listened to this show, and Mr O'Brien needs to look at himself in the mirror on two counts. Firstly, he made no mention whatsoever of Israels' attack on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus. The world needs to look at Iran and judge the country by the metric of how we viewed Irac in 2003, and we all know how wrong we were on that occasion. I speak as somebody who worked in the Middle East and has also been to the West Bank on several occasions.
the scale of Iran's attack on Israel was unprecedented and unexpected. No other country has attacked isreal on such a scale in decades. The Isreali detterence is gone despite being a nuclear state.
It’s a huge distraction from the moral loss and hopeless ‘situation’ in Gaza
Listening from Namibia. Growing up in Namibia I haven’t really heard much about these nations: Iran and Israel. From their actions, it seems like both are hostile nations.
