"Slight Return" is a song by The Bluetones, released as the second single from their 1996 debut album Expecting to Fly. A re-release, it was originally issued as a double-A-side with "The Fountainhead" the previous year. It peaked at number two in the UK singles chart and remains the band's highest-placing single to date. It was also included on the band's 2006 compilation A Rough Outline: The Singles & B-Sides 95 - 03.
It's mad how you couldn't get away from this song in 1996, it got played a lot on the radio, and MTV and VH-1 both played the video regularly too... A quarter of a century later, you never hear it anymore unless you play it by choice... Loved this song then, and still do now
I have to say I only learnt of this song this morning on the radio on the way to work. Possibly heard it somewhere else before. Tho I was only a kid in ‘96 so I can’t relate there. Glad I know it now. Catchy tune
This defines 1996 for me, love it 🥰
I was 16 when this was released. This song has stuck in my head so much over the years. I dont even know the lyrics or particularly like it! LOL! it was just the background soundtrack to an influential time.
Superior to most of the shite at the time
@@bella.connox good times
A cracking song from a cracking album.. I loved the mid 90s and Britpop, great music, The Word, TFI Friday, Alchopops, Baggy Jeans, Fred Perry, Euro 96, what a time to be alive..
Today everything is just shit.
You forgot the copious amount of lads wearing Ben Sherman shirts.
Sadly a pal of mine from school took his own life last year. I'll always remember sitting in his bedroom in 96 aged 16 watching him on his drum kit trying to drum along to this song and singing out of tune and me in stitches laughing. Rest easy friend and thanks for the good times.
I know how you feel - my best friend, due to circumstances I won't go into, fell into what I can only describe as a severe depression. He didn't take care of himself, his weight increased enormously and he eventually died of a heart attack. He sort of willed himself to die - he told me that death couldn't come too quickly, which was heartbreaking to hear. He was such a fun bloke in his prime.
Sorry for your loss, mate.
@@tonybates7870 Cheers mate. And sorry for your loss too. The mind is a very fragile thing. I have issues with anxiety attacks and bouts of depression and if it wasn't for medication and counselling I don't know where I'd be.
@@stephencoan79 I'm in the same position as you and have been taking meds for depression and anti psychs for psychosis for years and it's not easy for me either but I'm here and I try hard to stay on top of my issues and not let them get the better of me.
@@adamweston4152 your the man Adam. Stay strong
@@lesevans3138 thanks Les for saying that but I'm not the man.. I'm just A man, still taking the meds and getting on with my life and I'm happy to say that things are going well for me and I hope that all of the people who replied here are well and in a better place than they were before.❤️😉👍
It was ‘96. I’d been dating an Australian and I really liked him but it looked like it wasn’t to be. He had borrowed my Bluetones CD and I wanted it back especially because of this cute little song that seemed to speak so much about my situation. Reader, I’ve been married to him for 25 years! ❤
One of Britpop's finest hours, and I'm from Miami, Florida! Britpop rules!
If you ever get over here to the UK and get a chance to see Mark Morris solo acoustic gig you'd have a great time. The guy has a gift. Saw him last week.. laid back, self effacing humourous quality! Get yourself on aTrans Atlantic plane and see fer yerself!!
:-)
@@nikmark01 I'd love to! In the meantime:

Britpop all but killed indie music in the U.K. by taking it mainstream. Shoegaze bands were the biggest casualties, but band like the Bluetones suffered too.
Absolutely. Oh my days, zzz i miss this time
It's only now that we can appreciate how lucky we were to be at of age where we could listen to these amazing original bands from the 🇬🇧 on radio 1. I haven't been able to listen to that channel for over 20 years as it just has repetitive shite on now
Anthem of my youth… 40 now and still love it
Understated
Im the same age, just seen this song in a film and got took back to the place i belong. If only we could go back Caroline 😂
Class little song, so well constructed, still love it as much today, class is permanent
What a chilled out song, a perfect mix of sadness and hope.
Beggars belief this didn't get to No.1 but the fkn Spice Girls did...
Melancholy
Could listen to this and a load of Shed Seven songs all day long.
@John Gleeson He needs to shed his load.
Oh my.... These were good times, they are long gone unfortunately
Think that's what ille do today
Bring back the 90's
Love it❤
Yes 💯
One of my lifes soundtrack songs. I loved The Bluetones as a kid in the 90's. I was 16 years old and a mad Stone Rose's fan who couldnt see past them until bands like Oasis, The Verve, OCS, Shed 7,The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets and The Bluetones changed that. This is my karaoke song.
90's, please return, if only for a short while.....
Yes! Yes! Yes! 😘
It was the 60s upside down
90s , ..so many good memories...
Hello listen to us 😘
Oh man how i miss the 90s.... 😕😞
This was the very first single that I bought with my own money when i was a kid. Can remember skipping school after lunch to get bus into town and go to Woolworths. Think it was £3. Still got it to this day. Huge bee on the cover with green background. I think it was Babylon Zoo that kept it from reaching number 1 at the time. That was at a time when you had to sell tens of thousands just to hit the charts. This song and video were played everywhere.
I had this tune pop into my head today from nowhere!! Good job I knew who sang it! Brought back great memories of my 20's. 😎
Ditto emma
You still look 20 damn.
The best B-Side the Stone Roses never recorded. That is a compliment.
One of the coolest songs of the era. No question about it.
Absolutely LOVE the outro! Always sends me. The 90s were just riddled with great bands and great music.
This song had some brilliant guitar playing.
One of the best songs from the britpop era of the mid 90s, such a great tune...
Halcyon Days they were, great music, great clobber, euro 96, alchopops, money in the pocket....
Before Britpop got co-opted. The early 90's scene gave us some of the best recorded music since the 60's.
when did it get co opteed? think b4 you type. I was there? xx
amen
I miss that era so much
I miss the 90s so much
This was never britpop mate. This was and still is, legendary indie
The Bluetoons Debut album was class and one of the best of the 90s. Underrated band for sure
I saw them play this on a mini-tour with Supergrass in Gloucester very early in 95. There were only about 60 people in the crowd. I bought this song on blue vinyl on their own label at the gig. Great night. I remember parking the car in front of Fred West's house...
small world. my ex missus used to park there. though the house was demolished by then. it's a walkway now.
Replying to a year old comment on UA-cam but yeah, The Bluetones were great at that kind of stuff. I've got a copy of "4 Day Weekend" which they only sold at gigs. It had a cool anime video on the CD. It's on UA-cam now, obviously.
I remember that they played in Gloucester
Was he in?
@@pifflepockle yeah, it took him along to the gig, he loved it
Haven't hear this for at least 20 years...so sweet...those chords. Those were the days...
Cracking tune, fills me with nostalgia for a simpler time. Thing is, we knew it was good at the time too.
Brilliant track.....I went to school with Eddy the drummer!!!! I lived in Hunwick he was from Crook, in glorious county Durham.
Learn something new. Always loved this and. Didn’t know of the Durham connection. I’m from Old Esh.
Stu Hill saw these at keele uni about 13 yrs ago. Didn't know there was a county Durham connection. I'm an Evenwood boy :-)
Absolutely underrated band.
Where did you go
?
When things went wrong for you
When the knives came out for you
Where did you go?
All you needed was a friend
You just have to ask and then
You don't have to have the solution
You've got to understand the problem
And don't go hoping for a miracle
All this will fade away
So I'm coming home
, I'm coming home
What did you learn?
Locked away all on your own
Chance and your head all blown
What did you learn
?
It was unfortunate
You missed your chance to find out that
You don't have to have the solution
You've got to understand the problem
And don't go hoping for a miracle
All this will fade away
So I'm coming home, I'm coming home
You don't have to have the solution
You've got to understand the problem
And don't go hoping for a miracle
All this will fade away
So I'm coming home, I'm coming home, I'm coming home
But just for a short while...
brit pop at its best, 27 years later i can't stop listening to that song!
Can't believe hearing this again after years and years not being played on radio anymore, was 10 when it came out and remembered the chorus so well great times
Mark Morriss at 0:13 produces the best little dance/shuffle in the history of popular music
+Gary Maughan when i hear this song i see that shuffle no matter where i am lol
Gary Maughan The say that the best dancers in the world cant replicate that shuffle
Better than stipe in losing my religion? Shuffle off needed.
The shuffle is as legendary as the song itself!
@@nigelmcdermott5942 I was more thinking What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
Memories of driving to an Oasis concert in the summer of '96 with this album blaring away. Those were the days. :)
I just wish I could go back to the 90s when I was younger, the music was better and the world was nicer and less complicated, or so it seemed to me.
This song invokes pure, pure joy, love it, have always loved it.
Wow! 20 years or so since I last listened to that song! It's great!
No radio in your house
This bloody song has been in my head all day.....great tune !
Bless them, they were just another good band in an ocean of emerging talent, but this song stood out.
In 1996, When this was played heavily, I was a Fetus and I guess I heard this song back in the Womb. Apparently I really loved it, Otherwise I can't explain why i'm so obsessed with this song and feel bonded to it.
One of the great songs of the era. Beautiful.
I thank god every day I grew up in the 90’s. What a beautiful decade!!
Same here and the 80's!
We didn’t realize it at the time, but it really was an amazing time - looking back it seems so much has been lost since :(
The Bluetones were the first ever band I saw live and still one of the best live bands I've seen. This song epitomises how good they were and are
Remember listing to this on the way to school on cassette! Great times 😊
Love the sound of a Rickenbacker !! Top Toon!!!
Excellent tune, takes me back to my younger days when decent music was making a comeback. God I sound old!!
At 2:45 the song could end, but it comes back in for a slight return, and it's beautiful.
........😯
Love that rickenbacker sound
💯🎸🔊🎼🎵🎶
I loved this when my children were young teenagers, very, very happy memories. Talented group, lovely voices and instrumentals, this period of the 90's was producing some brilliant music.
Song of my University days......so long ago now..............
Such a great song and so heartfelt. I Listen to this often. Great gentle vibe, well done guys! You re officially validated. x
Mark Morris performed an acoustic set in my local about 10 years ago and I was lucky enough to meet him. Nice bloke.
I love this tune
TOP STUFF! STILL LISTENING WITH SMILES ALL OVER! LOVE FROM GREECE!
Why only just over half a million views ? Banger in my eyes.
Heard this after decades on the Xs radio Manchester today Clint boon ( Inspiral carpets keyboard player) played it on his set , singing along brought back great memories of clubbing I. Manchester 😛
This was when the UK produced some of the best music in the world. This is the era of "Britpop" - a lot of great bands producing some superb songs that filled the charts throughout the 1990s.
What music does the UK produce today? Adele / Sam Smith / Bastille / Plan B…… What went wrong?
+I Love Taylor Swift hey if you compare the music produce by britains and produce by the americans, that I doubt it could be called like that, I mean "music", the Brit music if so much better.
+I Love Taylor Swift The x factor and all that shit happened.Still good bands out there though like The Horrors,The Pigeon Detectives,The View etc.
Robert Elliott well at least theres no Justin Bieber, Gaga music that are really just... show but not art or music after all.
+Henry Benitez Oh we've got shit worthless crap as well, see One Direction etc.
Well but at the end we or at lest I can say there are still good bands and singers that are woth to listen.
One of my absolute favs love the solo
This is music! Melancholic and sweet and brings me back to some older times. I love it so much!
The 90's .. Hurry up please Time machines, x
Absolutely love this. Great memories
Love love this singer. So bloody talented. Secy Fecker. Xxxx
Thanks for the memories xx
If The Stone Roses and Lush had a baby that they abandoned in Oasis's garden, it would be this song.
WOW WOW still sounds so fresh, beautiful Tune💕
Wonderful, just wonderful song
I am the 5000th thumb up. It should be more.
2019 and I'm back here still loving it
Crazy isn't it how you don't suddenly stop liking music in a specific year.
I've always loved this song, reminds me of college in early 90's,
That era, this era, the best era, everything’s crap now, the good old days???
There’s quality to be found in every era. Even today
Yes 💯
even if they only made this song in their life, thats more than enough, britpop was brilliant
Absolutely love this tune! Remember it as a lad of about 7 the first time round, love it even more I’m in my 30s now! What a banger
I heard it on Live and Kicking when I was 7 or 8 and loved it even as a small kid. Great tune.
Glorious. Always was, always will be!
Love the 12 string Rick sound!!!
I love the feeling of this track, well 90's britpop / indie scene those days were great

Such a great song love it, it's in my top ten
liked playing this on guitar back in the day. saw singer do show at my local pub. class singer
Love this. Great memories of school
This is the most 90's song ever!
@John Gleeson Ten
What a song.
I tagged along to a couple of their Tokyo dates back around '97. "Thanks for giving us the clap" went over their heads, luckily.
this song, pretty much more than any other wants me to buy a 12 string Rickenbacker.
Im coming home.... but just for a short while
How are they so underrated? I just discobered them this year and this song along sith Bluetonic, Sleazy Bed Track, and A New Athens are my new favorite songs.
Argh I loved this track when I was a youngster :) Superb band!!! :)
20 years ago!?!? Christ I was 20 :) Best music 80s and 90s!
I love this song
love this song this song got me into the Bluetones
I don’t claim to be the biggest Britpop fan but this; this is one of the best 😍
控えめに言って好きだわ。朝からいいスタート切りたい時に聞きたい曲笑
The 90's the last great era of British music.
Damn..! The `90s were Way Epica Man..!! "Sorted For E`s And Wizz"..!The first question in a Club.."What Have you had...!"Damn...!!
Left the mainstage at T in the park when the Manics were playing to see these guys in a tent.
The Manics were dull as dishwater, but these guys rocked.
how many souvenirs in my mind!
been looking for this song for yearrrrrrrrrrssssssssssss
Looking forward to seeing them in Middlesbrough later today..
Remember this well when it was released, always loved it. Very Stone Roses.
2023 let's go !
Great band, great song
Great song.
Very strong hook in the line "All this will fade away". Most "musicians" nowadays wouldn't even know what a "hook" is.
Don't talk shit ya mong
Loved the bluetones knew Adam the guitarist to say hello too really nice guy the album expecting to fly is brilliant
Top choon lv it
loved this song when it came out they were many bands like these ,shed 7,ocean colour scene ,northside they all lived in the shadow of oasis the roses or blur great video especially 2:04 the dog running along with them sweet.
