- Changing my Harley Davidson oil filter without spilling even 1 drop of oil using my "Capture Bottle" method! Easy peasy! I SAVE $100 to $200 each oil change, by servicing my HD motorcycle oil & filter myself! My method helped me tackle a real "PIA" job with no sweat, no spill & no mess! I show how I make & use my "Capture Bottle"! Obviously, I drain the oil in the crank case in the conventional method following service manual instructions but this video just shows the oil filter R&R portion of the job. What a simple but brilliant idea. Wish I would have thought of this or seen this video years ago.
I used to store my bike for winter at a dealer for about $200 which included an oil change. When I moved, I got a bigger garage so I stored the bike myself. After that I brought it in for JUST an oil change, and was shocked at how much it cost. After that I bought all the right tools and have been changing it myself ever since. Thanks for the tip!
Good advice! What makes me laugh is when guys say when putting filter back on to fill it at least half way with new oil before installing it. Of course they never show the mess you will have when you turn the filter on its side to install it! Hahaha!

Many thanks, I've been riding a shovel for 35 years. Do my own wrenching and this tip is great as I just purchased a 2011 Ultra FLHTK. Soon as it warms up in MN. She's getting warmed up and all fluids changed. When I first looked at the location of the oil filter location I can't say the words that came into my head of Harley Engineering as this is a family friendly video. Now I feel better. Thanks again.
Hope this tip helps ya out! One thing, my bikes an 03 and I don't know if the newer bikes oil system is the same as the 99 through 06. Can you let us know if your oil drains out of the filter and back into the crankcase while standing upright. Thanks for watching, 03
PS, make sure you pull your dipstick out to break the vacuum otherwise the oil may not drain out of the filter and back into the crankcase.
Great tip to let the oil drain while bike is vertical so filter contains less oil. Just a thought about the video... It contains enough detail that a first timer could use it to do the job. Terrific point of view, but for the newbies I would suggest that you might have mentioned that the new filter goes on only hand tight. You used a wrench - which could lead the uninitiated to over tighten the new filter. I understand why you did it as the positioning can be a little awkward to use a hand. Nice job!

I have been changing my own oil on all my bikes since 1970. Harleys filter placement is stupid, and they don't care! I to use a Condor and love it. The bottle is great. Can't wait to test this method. I have time to look for a clear bottle. Thanks!
Good idea letting the oil drain from the filter into the crankcase to help avoid mess, but it will not go into your oil pan or oil tank until the engine starts and the RETURN side of the oil pump then sends it into the oil pan/tank..... better to use a Rogue Choppers Scavenger system to capture the oil from the crankcase and stop it contaminating the fresh oil in the oil pan/tank..... remember this is a dry sump system here - not a car-type wet sump so you refill the oil pan or tank with oil and not the crankcase !!!!! On later model bikes the oil pan is separate from the engine (and trans) and is just located under the trans......

That's a great solution to the mess I made my first oil change. I work for Advance auto parts and I have been recycling signage to trough oil to a pan. It works, but, I like the solution you depict in your video.
Yeah, we all have tried lots of solutions but this is one that actually works every time! I too have used the "ole trough to pan" method when removing the cam cover to inspect cam chain tensioners so everything has it's place I guess! Thanks for the comment!

I have been doing the bottle over the filter, for
over 20 years. Use a 1 liter soda bottle, use a 2 liter bottle when doing the oil,change on my truck..
Great idea Sir I will use it, also Harley recommends the bike be driven 10 to 20 min prior to oil change due to the dry sump.

Remember to stand it vertically for a while when hot (overnight is best) & I usually pull the oil filler plug for best drainage of oil filter.

Good stuff 👍 I also have the wheel-chock stand as seen here - I love it . Any time I work on my bike or even just detail it I park in the stand . It's perfect . This catch method is good , I'll do this on my upcoming oil change .

Good demo
Use a nail to hammer a hole into the top of the filter facing you. Let most ooze out, turn it a half turn to where the hole is at the bottom and let the remainder drain. You'll be able to remove a dry oil filter.

When I did an oil change on my truck, I would let the oil drain out, and then I would pour a quart of oil in, let that flesh out some more of the old oil, oil changes, or cheap insurance for your vehicle.

Neat tip. I have made a trough from the 1.25 liter coke plastic bottle, and punch drain holes in the filter. Stay well.

My Shovelhead has the oil filter inside the oil tank and is easy to change. This Twin Cam FLSTC I bought is a pain to get the filter off without making a mess.
I tried this on my Sportster with no success. The best thing I've found is cardboard. I cut the clearance for the pressure switch and bracket so that I can shove it underneath the filter with a curve. As an added precaution, I slid a big section of cardboard underneath the big as well as underneath the drain pan. Guess what? No drip or mess of any kind. I used the original as a template and cut several more to keep with my oil and filters for future changes. This is MUCH easier than this truck or the one with aluminum foil.
but I think I like the bottle trick a little better...even if it makes the oil change 10% cleaner than cardboard I will go with it....plus you can reuse the same bottle 🍼 a few times. Also I always do a "full purge" deal when I do a engine oil /filter change on my own HD's.

Nice solution - I use a trough made from the same quart milk bottle to catch the oil. Yours is more fool-proof, however. I'm thinking of some way to use your method but with the standard HD filter.
Where were you with this back in 2002? It took me quite a while before I figured out to use a cut up plastic pop bottle with the socket extension and ratchet thru the lid. Excellent vid.

Besides saving money by doing your own oil change you just saved me 25 minutes and 10 oz of simple green by your idea. It freaking makes a mess even with the worthless Harley drain jig. Thanks...shiney side up
That a twin cam. The oil filter doesn't drain back. it is designed not to. It has an anti-drain-back rubber membrane that prevents the filter from emptying out. If your filter is emptying out, you have an Evo oil filter, which will kill your engine, as it is a 30 micron filter, and TC requires a 10 micron filter. I just let the oil go where ever it may. Simple green and the water hose cleans it off nicely.
That bottle is a great idea. Thanks. Only thing is your cost saving is off. Dealership I talked to said oil change is $100. So when you buy oil and filter you're looking around $70 at least. So its $30 savings. Which is still good. But if you do primary and transmission fluid also then you're talking big savings. As with those you'll have just over $100 in oil,filter primary oil, transmission fluid. Where I'm sure you're looking at least $300 if not more at dealership. So now you're looking at few hundred in saving. But great video. Great idea.
3 years ago when I made this, I got the price from my dealer who has since sold to a new owner. The cost does vary from dealer to dealer. I also think they are more hungry for the work now.
I like the "sleeve " idea but the nut on top of the oil filter has never worked for me.

Harley sells a plastic oil catcher for oil changes but they want about $20. dollars for a hunk of plastic!

Okay, I'll pinch the bear .... What difference does it make if you warm it up until it flows freely or let it drain for hours? There is no way more oil will come out! I live in a warm climate and I pull the filter first, then pull the plug and let it drain for hours.
In my opinion, the oil seems to flow past the internal baffle more quickly on most modern filters & back into the crankcase when it's first warmed up.
I just put a piece of cardboard with a fold in it. Slide it up under the oil filter and it will run right into the drain pan

Naw..I been changing my own oil on every engine I have since 1964....old man stuff learned from my Dad...passed on to me.. pay some fool to change your oil...that is just plain dammn stupid ..
What I discovered……
Normally I replace oil filter right away, making a mess every time. This last time, I wasn’t in a hurry, so I left my bike draining for about two hours. When I took off the old filter, I was expecting a mess. But this time, nothing came out. Wala!

The only thing different I do is when I drain the oil out I lean the bike over for 20 seconds so it drains out the filter…I find that it takes care of most of the oil. But ya take the risk of tipping too far and dropping your nice Harley.
Another way is to just punch a hole in filter and let it drain. Place a v-trough under the filter to guide the oil into the oil pan.
I am on a mission to warn bikers not to use K+N oil filters with the 'Helpful' nut welded on.That nut may kill you!They have a history of failing and leaking oil onto the road which is immediately picked up by the rear tyre.You may throw the bike into a high speed curve with a slippery back tyre.The result can be catastrophic. It happened to me last year(2020).And it has been a feature of these filters for years.I used them on my 2 Triumph bikes for years with no trouble.But you are playing Russian Roulette!

The oil scavenger is really built for the Evo to flush the lines that contain old oil. On Twin Cam and later, one doesn't need to flush.

The twin cam hold at least a qt & 1/2 of dirty oil in the pan that won’t drain. The scavenger is great 👍 I use it every other oil change you’d be amazed at all the dirty oil that comes out after you thought it was fully drained
That was slick, but you didn’t mention filling the oil filter prior to installation. You start your bike dry? I found this video researching how to install a filled oil filter on a late model Harley without spilling any oil out. The best I can come up with, is to fill the oil filter with new clean oil, place it in the freezer for a few hours to thicken it up, then quickly remove and install onto the adapter plate. Thoughts?

Yep, Great idea buddy, but WHY before you put on the NEW filter, you put DIRTY oil from the catch pan??? Me, I've ALWAYS, dipped my finger into the NEW oil and rubs the filter rubber seal. So much better. And cleaner too.

It's not touching anything but the rubber gasket & metal housing. It doesn't matter. Round track alcohol race car engine builder with full roller, dynoed at 650 hp at rear wheels on Mustang dyno, builder here, trust me, it doesn't matter. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

I agree, I half fill my filter to minimize the time it takes the pump to reach normal oil pressure.

Should purge it first. Before you put the filter back on. There's almost 1/2 to 3/4 qt of dirty oil still in there. Most don't do this cause there scared. First add 2 or 3 qts of oil to your oil tank Its very easy make your make shift drain scoop and watch it flow out when you start it up. When it stops pouring out dirty oil it will show the clean oil coming out stop your engine add the rest of your oil to top it off .You can put some oil in that oil filter before you spin it on. watch Scooter tramp Scotty video on oil change tips on his Harley Davidson.
His bike is an old EVO. It's a MUCH different motor, he even says twin cam motors are different & you can't run them without a filter!! If you ever do get a Harley, feel free to do your oil change as WRONG as you want to. SMH... Me, I'll follow my service manual & do it correctly thank you.

good idea! but I can,t see paying $15 for an oil filter because its chrome and has a nut on it, and k&n filters don,t have a high rating. there are better alternatives, hi flo filters are just one option at 1/2 the cost no nut on end but a good filter. do a filter removal without a nut on the filter. thanks
