Erikson's final comment is so true. You guys bring such great insight AND hilarity to these novels and it's such a joy to listen to! Looking forward to the Bonehunters ^^
Thankyou so much Steven again for sharing so much. It honestly means the world to follow an author who is willing to discuss so much of his work. And thanks to the book club for taking me through this again. And of course thank you two for bringing this together again. And being brave (almost silly) enough to decide to start this read through of what is to me the most special collection of stories ever released. Your insights and experiences with these books allow me to live vicariously through you reading them again for the first time. Lastly I bet you'll read them again :P love you all! X
Steve, I reject the premise of your mischaracterisation of my position, sir. 😂 Characters are not 'merely' plot functions, but characters are indeed plot functions AND are realised and expanded upon. Evidence you say? Why I will quoute Steven Erikson's response when discussing the absence of Binadas, "His role just fell away"... his role eh? That sounds suspiciously like narrative function in sheep's clothing. 😂😂 Something, something, petard hoisted... 😂😂
What a fantastic interview!! Surprise surprise I always say that 😂 but really, some fresh insights, laughter and joy, what more could we want. Lana thanks for asking my question about Binadas and you’ll note that Steve did not DENY hating Binadas!!!!! Hahaaaaaaa As always, just really appreciate the extensive nature of these interviews - you always dive deep with the questions and follow ups, and Steve always dives deep for his answer. I love his pauses before he answers - he’s genuinely giving each question deep thought before responding at all. ❤❤❤ Anyway, like Steve I am also mad about no episode next week 😤 😤 😤 but I will survive. See y’all in 2 weeks for THE BONEHUNTERS !!!!
Looking forward to the next book in both series! Also hopeful hearing Mr. Erikson talk about how he enjoys drawing maps. I would really love a map book!
LOL true story. I just started reading Malazan a few weeks ago because, as I’m writing a book on film, I found that reading Jung simultaneously was invading my analysis *too* directly and not the usual distance with which I usually deploy Jung. So I decided I wanted something completely different and started reading these fantasy books that I had heard so much about. And I’m reading Gardens of the Moon, and I’m thinking: “This is all so Jungian!” Glad someone is doing a full treatise on the subject. Can’t wait to read it when I’m done with the Malazan Book of the Fallen (I’m reading Deadhouse Gates now).
I know Kharkanas series ain't on your radar yet, but hear me out. There's a character introduced early in book two. Haven't finished the book yet, but i'm pretty sure he's gonna be one of those "side characters" that deepens the world and makes it feel real, but in any case, It's THE BEST character intro i've ever read, and i can porbably talk for about 2 hours on why i think it's a work of a master. Steven's super power is that he can knock you out cold in 15 pages or less. It's a very, very rare talent among writers these days
What an amazing birthday gift this interview is, so excited for you guys to start Bonehunters! It may not be my favourite of the series but it has some of the most epic moments
Something that I always wonder about during an Erikson interview is if he is into punkrock. The mindset in his books and him talking about his worldview reminds me of punkrock. (or at least my view on punkrock) Anger mixed with empathy and compassion topped of with a critical mind. For some reason hearing him talk always brings the band Bad Religion to mind.
Ahhhh! Out of sync video drop lol. I am busy this weekend (out of town at a retro gaming expo) so idk when I’ll have time to watch this but will do so on pieces likely. Very excited!
it's funny how the interviews with erikson has become more and more fanboyi - at the end of the crippled god you two are just gonna sit and giggle and point at erikson at this rate lol
32:40 David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 years is a great read. Also recommend his more recent Dawn of Everything cowritten with David Wengrow. Love to see GOAT (fantasy fiction) recognize GOAT(Anarchist Anthropology)
I am holding on to hope that Mr. Ericsson will join you guys for an intro dance. (fingers crossed, we have 5 chances left)

Long Live DLC! Thanks for stopping by Ascendant Erikson!
This is gushing, fanboying about Malazan, and a little bit of interview. LOVE IT.

love that you are able to speak to steve after each book. so cool
Great interview, great author, great series!!!!❤😊
Amazing as usual. I also share Stevens sentiment on how angry I am (joking of course) to not have an episode this week.
Same here *shakes fist* I selfishly want MOREEE 😂

So you would have us believe that you are more than Apto Canavalian? 😆
@@Paul_van_Doleweerd Obviously, Apto Canavalian is pure plot function, right? Inspired by reality, that's me.
@@stevelundin5705 Hang on a second... you told me that any similarity between me and Apto was entirely a coincidence... why you dirty... 😂😂
@@stevelundin5705 So, this AP Canavan character is based on Apto Canavalian? That explains a few things... 😂
@@Paul_van_Doleweerd Yes, yes it is.

Always such a joy! Building up to Toll the Hounds in the next few months, so I'm excited to see you there on the journey 🙂
Love this! Great discussion everyone!

Are you talking about a character whose name rhymes with..."scareth"?
What an amazing birthday gift this interview is, so excited for you guys to start Bonehunters! It may not be my favourite of the series but it has some of the most epic moments
Yeah, like THAT chapter...
I can’t wait to read Fall and Ascent !
Also, can't wait for Bonehunters! Some fave scenes incoming....
So glad you got the GOAT here.

Randomly checking UA-cam.. 3 min since drop. Guess I know what I'll be doing the next hour+ 😂
Mwahahaha I realized who Bugg was on my first read when he mentioned his past sexual activity moved the sea

Oh yeah, here we go, DlC with Erikson on Midnight Tides!😊
Finished this book just in time 😃

I recently read Dawn of Everything. It was a thought provoking and fun read!
😍😍😍😍
1:06:59, our guy is very insistent on being the drinking buddy of everyone that talks to him, even if it’s strictly about the books.
No, this vharacters name rimes with.... nymph? 😅
