Lovely to find you back. Some elements are definitely in the realm of the long-game, as Jeff, your highlighting the 'fallen' section is certainly one of those instances, since it's embedded in a discussion of children. You could, if desired, mentally place a tag, first in Deadhouse Gates, and the quote 'children are dying,' then tag this novel's return to the topic of children as you cited, and finally await the return to this theme in books nine and ten for the final tag (there's also an entire child-storyline in the 8th book as well). The other instances where children feature in Reaper's Gale (the kids playing in the mud re Toc, etc) can be seen as more direct foreshadowing as the Redmask tale spins out, since it's a thread I kept coming back to in one iteration or another. I admit to a kind of obsessive circling around certain themes, images, and elements, which is just part of my writing process, I guess. It's advice I often give beginning writers: don't evade what obsesses you, but circle around it again and again. Find every conceivable angle of approach. If you arrive at one answer, do not relax, because in truth there are a thousand answers, not just one. The principle effect on your writing will be a kind of cohesion that's both present on the page and also hidden between every line. Ride those echoes, they are humility's own voice. Cheers, SE
Welcome back Lana (I hope I spelled your name right) and Jeff! Out of all the people covering Malazan your videos are the ones I always want to listen to. I actually had started another book after Bonehunters but when I saw the first reapers Gale video go up it made me want to drop that book and read Reaper’s Gale. I just finished the penultimate chapter and man I am glad I got inspired by you guys to start my reading. I was excited before, but I didn’t want to miss out on your videos so now I am more than caught up and wait on baited breath for each release. You two are the best! Keep it up❤
Welcome back. It is great to see you and hear your thoughts. Hypothetical: if saying and swearing by a thing can give it power as the Errant says... and people swear by Hood's breath... would it be possible for that to become a manifested entity? If it could, how would it manifest? Could it possibly be a sentient breeze or wind... in Hood's realm? Just a thought.
@@ACriticalDragon That's nice, A. P.!! 😁😁😁 And, please, please, do more Realm of the Elderlings videos, and the long-awaited Crippled God discussion with Philip! I'm dying to see these on your channel! 😭
That line Lana read, "I will march on because that's what soldiers do," reminds me of a lyric from an incredible song called Farewell Transmission by Songs: Ohia. "The real truth about it is no one gets it right. The real truth about it is we're all supposed to try." Highly recommend that song, top 5 song for me for sure. Incredible lyrics.
Just because Jeff mentioned it seemed like “the fallen” were really standing out to him as being specifically mentioned, I’m going to do a call back to Midnight Tides and possibly my favorite quote from the series, it’s from Udinaas in Chapter 7 of Midnight Tides: “Who tracks our footsteps, I wonder? We who are the forgotten, the discounted and the ignored. When the path is failure, it is never willingly taken. The fallen. Why does my heart weep for them? Not them but us, for most assuredly I am counted among them. Slaves, serfs, nameless peasants and labourers, the blurred faces in the crowd-just a smear on memory, a scuffing of feet down the side passages of history. Can one stop, can one turn and force one’s eyes to pierce the gloom? And see the fallen? Can one ever see the fallen? And if so, what emotion is born in that moment? There were tears on his cheeks, dripping down onto his chafed hands. He knew the answer to that question, knife-sharp and driven deep, and the answer was…recognition.” I used this in my eulogy at my brother’s funeral because he lived recognizing and uplifting the fallen. A lot of these mentions stand out on a reread.
For the non-spoiler topic, book 5 of the Stormlight Archive is coming out soon and I'm pretty stoked. Sanderson and Stormlight got me back into reading fantasy back in 2017, so it has a special place in my heart. However, I do fear that my reading tastes have changed a bit since reading things like Malazan and Robin Hobb that ask a bit more of their readers. I guess I'll find out when I read it! But regarding catching up, I was going to re-read the first four books but they are just too long and, like Jeff, I'm a sluggish reader. So, what I usually do to catch up on a series is create a UA-cam playlist of recaps and reviews from BookTubers. It's super helpful, especially for a high-profile series like Stormlight with a million videos to choose from.
I hope you both realise how much life you breathe not only into us but into this series as well ❤️ missed you guys. So fun to come back to this book on a re-read.
Welcome baaaaaack!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I missed you so much!!! You cannot imagine the bloom of utter joy I felt in my chest when I saw that your episode has just dropped!!! ❤❤ So excited! 😍😍
Definitely in the same boat as Lana in regards to the non spoiler question, with the addition of if I’m doing a reread, I can put them down for any length of time and just come back whenever(I do this with Dune and WoT because I do at least a partial reread of both series every year)
My excerpt from these two chapters is also from Udinaas: “‘He is dead.’ And so am I. There is no point in honouring the dead. I have seen too much to believe otherwise. Grieve for lost potential, the end of possibilities, the eternally silent demise of promise. Grieve for that, Fear Sengar, and you will understand, finally, how grief is but a mirror, held close to one’s own face. And every tear springs from the choices we ourselves did not make. When I grieve, Fear, I cannot even see the bloom of my own breath - what does that tell you? They resumed walking. Silent.”
A glorious return! Pull back up to Kruppe’s table! Non-spoiler: I have a theory that Tolkien’s Samwise was based on Conan Doyle’s character Samkin Aylward from his novel Sir Nigel. If someone was to write a character “inspired by” a Malazan character, which one would be easiest to recognize (other than Iskaral Pust)?

I suspect this comment might be my favorite quote next week? Beautifully said. Always great to hear from you!

An episode of book club after 2 weeks without is like finding an oasis while wandering lost in Raraku

You spelled it perfectly. ❤
@ good to know👍🏻. You and Jeff are my favorite people to listen to when it comes to talking books. Your energy is unmatched

Fortunately, Hood's hoary balls is less common....

So excited! 😍😍
Icarium vs Rhulad is like Hulk vs Doomsday, one gets stronger as he gets pissed the other when he dies.
At this point Steven is going to need to write more Malazan books so I can continue to look forward to this show. I'm only mostly joking.
None of the people who cover this series cover all of the books.
Welcome back, let’s gooooooo!!!

For me usually just reading the summary of the previous book normally refreshes enough memory cells to proceed onto the next release.
Its Miss Janath if you're nasty.
I’ve been waiting for this!
Hurray!!
I want that sweater 💙🧡and yeah sometimes these books aren't an escape 😂they're too real
A Norwegian special.
Nice time to check UA-cam😊
