At its peak, Hampi was considered the wealthiest city of the ancient world which was rivalled only by Beijing.

There is a saying in Karnataka - If you not got tanned enough, you have not seen Hampi enough😂. That awkward moment where a man tried to pick your kid😂, it's very cultural thing. It's very common for people try to touch and pick cute looking babies. There is no bad intention at all. Personal space and boundaries are bit new concepts to Indians. Actually as Indians have become more westernised, this practice is slowing dying down.
I know this man was well-intentioned and did not believe Hays to be in harm. But, we're teaching Hays that saying no to unwanted physical touch is perfectly acceptable (consent!), even if the intentions are good, and he asked him to stop, as did Pete (you can't see that in this clip) and the man did not listen, which is why I became frustrated.
By the way, that’s a funny saying! It was so hot! I can’t imagine it in the spring/summer!
@@StephandPete Best time to visit Hampi is after Monsoon ends (October) to end of Winter (February). Otherwise it's literally like being an omlet in frying pan. Next time keep atleast 3 to 4 days. Then only you can make justice to Hampi visit and get a guide. The historical stories are too good to be missed. Have a great stay in India.
I don't think those people meant any harm to Hays..they just don't realise that this kinda thing isn't common or acceptable elsewhere
Yeah, that’s why I left it in. For some people, that would be a really huge deal. I understand it’s not a thing for them but picking up my child and taking a photo with him while he’s saying no? Not ok.
@@StephandPete they were trying to take a pic when he was saying no ??? I didn't realise that.. that's totally wrong... I don't think anyone would or should be OK with that ( Indian or otherwise)...
Yeah I clearly didn't do a good job of capturing the whole situation (because I wasn't trying to, the camera was running from something else and I decided to include this.) It really wasn't a massive deal! Just trying to keep all of the memories and dealing with this sort of thing in India is unique (but not a problem) and these vlogs are to remember the experience with Hays one day. Anyway...appreciate you watching and understanding my point of view!
That guy was might not have known English you should have understood .
He did not understand your great language
Don't blame those people blindly
Thanks karuna for noticing that,
That place has soo much history...
Really unbelievable.
A very enjoyable video, as always! The place really radiates peace and calm. And I am just so impressed with Hays thinking on his feet - seeing the dogs and puppies and framing it as his gift for Mommy hehehe, so cute!
Also, its unfortunate that many people in India don't understand the concept of boundaries and consider it normal to go pick up a random child and keep at it even if the child is protesting. I may have reacted a lot worse if I was in your position there. Its not a child's job to appease and humour random people's needs to have a picture with a kid! It doesn't need to be that it should a situation where a child is in some 'danger' of something more grave and then only it needs to be taken seriously. If a child is uncomfortable with being picked, that is ENOUGH of a reason for the parents to intervene and have it stopped. Proud of you. Your child knows that his parents are there for him and will put his needs above those of random others :) And thats beautiful, in my opinion.
Hopefully those men would have learnt to respect boundaries better next time.
Noor! Thank you for understanding my point of view. Gosh, I did't expect this to be such a thing (it really wasn't a huge deal, but I like to leave moments like this in to keep it authentic.)
You totally get the point: a no is a no, even if the person had good intentions. Consent is really straightforward and not a tough concept! 🙃
I 100% understand this person meant absolutely no harm (which is why I included the note, which I guess should have been clearer), so I hate that people may think I'm accusing him of something I definitely was not.
It's just that like you say, we're teaching Hays that he can say no to physical touch *whenever* he feels like it. (And of course to oblige when others ask the same!) 👍
@@StephandPete The idea of consent is still relatively new here in India, while the idea of accommodating for and appeasing elders has very, very strong roots. I am sorry that you are being misunderstood by lot of people here. I just think that, *your child, your rules*. You and Pete are doing great and Hays is lucky to have you guys :) That's what matters most. All the best!
❤️❤️❤️
@@StephandPete I have been feeling very bewildered by people's reactions to this and hence was sharing about it with my husband. He thinks that people who are criticising you are basically lying and being sanctimonious, and hence shouldn't be taken seriously. As in they themselves would definitely not be comfortable if random, unknown people were to pick up their kids like this. Here they are being like, 'oh Indians just love kids, let them', while most parents are very protective of kids, especially if it involves people completely unknown to them.
Its just easy and gratifying to them in some way to get offended by a white woman and sprout nonsense at her. It would have been a different reaction if they had seen Pete getting frustrated in this situation. Then it would be case of, wow, great father protecting his child.
Just felt like sharing this. Some of the comments have pissed me off so I can imagine that you and Pete would be feeling much worse!
Hehe, they rile me up for sure, but you have to take it all with a grain of salt. We signed up for this. :)
But, I think you/your husband's take on it is very accurate, and also the internet loves to judge women (and more specifically, mothers) no matter which country you come from so it's not surprising. Like you/your husband, Pete's immediate reaction was "if I had said that, no one would have said anything."
As for the comments about how Indians are friendly and affectionate, which is absolutely true (and one of the things we love about it), but in this case (which I admittedly did not convey thoroughly), Hays was a photo-prop. The dude had no interest in playing/talking to him.
Gosh, I didn't mean for it to be such a huge deal because honestly, I forgot about it until editing and certainly don't want people to think I'm attacking that random, totally harmless man. Honestly, sometimes I leave this stuff in because I want the unique experience for my own memories, and as a discussion point with Hays when he rewatches these when he's older.
Anyway, thanks again!
That guy who lifted your child actually didn't mean any harm or disrespect. It's actually a very common thing in India that when we see a very cute child we tend to pick it up and pamper it.
I know that he was well-intentioned and that he meant no harm. But, we're teaching Hays that saying no to unwanted physical touch is perfectly acceptable (consent!), even if the intentions are good, and he asked him to stop, as did Pete (you can't see that in this clip) and the man did not listen, which is why I became frustrated.
Well lot of bad things happen too, to children in India due to lack of awareness of consent. Are you living in a bubble?
Visited a few years ago and loved this vlog for not only refreshing memories of the place but also how I felt there. Most other destinations involve a visit to a monument and then you can shut the history/architecture/sightseeing mode of the brain off. In Hampi it's constantly on, and all in living condition. There's no other distraction either. Like your, I too at some point gave up needing to know the background behind everything and just appreciated it for what was in front of me. This, for me, is why Hampi is like no other place I've visited in India. (Well, actually Maheshwar is a bit like this too - for the river, ghat, and looms.) Wondering whether Rome and some parts of Greece feel like this too.
Pete, excellent running and so creative! I've never seen such a thing before! Please don't ever buy a real drone. And Steph, it's only fun if you add your shots of Pete running in the edit.
Such a brilliant way to describe it. And I never thought about it, but Rome does feel like it in a way, but because it’s not rural I think it loses some of its magic? (Though Rome is one of our favorite places and just a few weeks ago we were on the trams not able to get over the amazing stuff you pass on a normal commute.) also, with Rome and Athens you sort of expect it, but unfortunately we don’t learn nearly as much about India, so to travel there and discover stuff like this is always a delightful (yet embarrassing) surprise.
I’m glad you enjoyed Pete’s drone bit lol. It’s been his schtick for awhile now when he finds the right moment. There’s a shot in our visit to Katsuoji temple (I think the vid is “how we came to travel full time”) where he also fakes being a drone. 😂😂😂
The poles of the vitthala temple can be used as percussion instrument. They make sounds
Once again I would say your son is too cute. God bless your sweet family.
Thank you.
Definietly u love india
I have not been there cause I was waiting for Steph and Pete video to show me the way 😜
Haha! Can't wait to see your take on it. ;)
Seriously Hampi is most underrated place
Truly!
There are many places in India which we don't know but they are really beautiful
Who told you Hampi is under rated Site. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site one of the most popular Historical destination in India. Many Foreign Nationals have visited Hampi in the past. In comparison, Badami, Aihole, Pattadakkal, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Haveri, Raichur, Bellary, Yadgir, Bidar, Vijayapura, Kalaburgi are some lesser known Under rated Historical destinations in Karnataka State in Southern part of India.
Actually, many places are underrated in India...many foreign tourists only visit overrated, crowded, dirty and shady alleys of Delhi and Mumbai and say oh look this is India, so chaotic, scammers but never visit such peaceful, architecturally marvelous places.
@@sangeetyatra3805 Very True. Even our own Indian Compatriots are not well aware what exactly exist in our own Country.
You should definitely go for halebiddu ,belur and somanathpura those are some incredible things that you will ever see
Next time!
Yours priceless smile during presentation is marvelous 🙂
Who, Pete? ;)
5:55 This is common, The elders showing their love to little childrens like that. Or giving some candy or just touching cheeks.
As you are a foreigner may be you don't know.
Anyways but as a mom that was good act of caring.
Not same like other countries.
Everybody's has their own opinion.
I appreciate you understanding our point of view! We certainly know how loving and tactile Indians are! And over the course of three months, encountered many lovely displays of affection or folks asking us for a photo. This man was not interested in playing with Hays, he wanted his buddies to take a photo that he did not ask permission for, so that, coupled with not putting Hays down when he began to cry and he and Pete both asked him to stop, is what made me angry. I didn't portray the whole scene (I didn't set out to film it), so I probably shouldn't have included this clip, but I made the decision to leave it in for my own memory, and to show Hays one of the challenges of traveling in India when he's a bit older (these videos are first and foremost for our family memories, but we do enjoy sharing them here!) and had no idea it would elicit such a strong response from others! But, it's been a good conversation piece and I'm happy to learn and engage here in the comments. Thanks for watching, Anand, and for your perspective! -S

Pillars of the temple were musical pillars with all high and low notes , but now they avoid touching them and the place which you were running it was a diamond and gold market , people used to purchase diamonds and gems in sacks , and it was a trading centre for tourist all around the world
Still lots of treasure is hidden in that place somewhere else to avoid the loot by invaders

Lucky you!
U don't discover their mysteries yet that's nice
Yeah it is common in India to touch and hug other’s children to show love and affection. But have to be aware of very strange people talking to your child and giving food.
As your guys are foreigners most of the time they are curious and want to take photos. Almost every where you will get respect and special treatment as you are guests of the country.
Absolutely! We understand this and to be clear, I know this man was well-intentioned and did not believe Hays to be in harm. But, we're teaching Hays that saying no to unwanted physical touch is perfectly acceptable (consent!), even if the intentions are good, and he asked him to stop, as did Pete (you can't see that in this clip) and the man did not listen, which is why I became frustrated. We experienced *hundreds* of appropriate displays of affection (tbh, Hays *HATED* having his cheeks pinched dozens of a times a day, but we put up with it as we understand it's meant nicely), and this was not that. This was scooping up my child for a photo op. He didn't even look at him or speak to him; he was a prop.
Yeah absolutely, Especially now a days people should stop such activities to touch each other or hug(especially children) due to Virus. We do not know intension anyway and I admire you are teaching right things to Hay. Have a wonderful journey, Enjoy!
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I think your decision to go to Hampi was an excellent one! but, the decision to not have a tour guide for a place like Hampi is crazy bad. Let me explain why -
- There are a multitude of things that remain unseen to commoners like you and I.
- The history and magnificence of the place can be truly captured and understood only if you know what was the intention behind building such a structure.
- The carvings on the walls and on the entire structure symbolise a plethora of subjects. Mahabharata, Ramayana, the population of that time, the philosophy of life, war and devotion, the kind of travellers who used to travel from far lands, the intricacy and the skill of these artisans and so much more!
We remain oblivious to most if not All of these otherwise. Also, it's hard to understand and digest a couple of things without a tour guide in such places, especially Hampi.
Also, in places like India, people love kids and will pamper them even if they aren't their own child. But yes, we understand that it isn't usual for this to happen in other countries.
Excellent coverage.. Thanks from Karnataka.. 👏
Thanks so much! Karnataka is a beautiful state we'd love to explore more of.
Mango, always. Did I say Hays is Love?
It was the most prosperous city on earth in its prime
Love you ABD ❤😅😅
😂
2:54😂😂😂
This needs to be backed up with modern infrastructure around the area for tourists
I think it will begin to get very popular, especially with the flights now. I hope they can manage it well and it doesn't become over-touristed, but I hope more people get to experience it! (A hard thing to balance, for sure.)
Actually u should have guidance for these places plz, because u will get more knowledge how Indian architecture was grateful those days
It’s very hard with a three year old to give a guide proper attention. When Hays was younger it was much easier and when he’s older it will be again.
Amazing video

Lifting a baby without patents permission is not acceptable at all.. Not only foreigners but for Indian parents getting angry is normal. Taking selfies unnecessarily and touching white skin people is the effect of the colonial era.. Cause for over 200 years when you forcedly became a slave and treated as dogs because of your skin colour, different religious faith and speaking in non English language, it's kind of a curiosity to basically backward or less educated poor people that white people are also walking side by side and riding in the same bus or train with them. So they still think of themselves as a lower category but not the same. Upper Class or middle class people and even educated lower class people don't do this kind of behavior. But it will change in the next 12-15 years when the 80-90% population of India will belong to the middle class and above.
I will go to India this year. I can't wait.

I've been appalled by the number of anti-Muslim comments we get on this channel. It's been the most disappointing part about making these videos, honestly. I report most for hate speech.
Why I am addicted to your videos just seems familiar to me 🤠💖
Aw thanks, Dhruvpal! We appreciate it!!
This wonderful city is destroyed by Muslims. 😢

Thanks Rakesh.
Just wanted to say that, in India, people generally don't strongly object if someone else picks up their children out of affection. But I understand and agree it's not a desirable thing. Some cultural difference here
The issue wasn’t so much the picking up but the not putting down when asked multiple times, and seeing Hays was crying. Thanks for watching! And understanding.
Thank you again for showing the less popular places of India to the world. There are soo many places like this all over India, which the people from outside India don't visit because they are not popular enough.
We’ve barely scratched the surface! I think an annual trip to India is in order.
You not miss Chikmagalur friends ❤️

To Lift a Cute Kid & show Affection.
Sorry about that... But yeah that's done only in a Postive Manner. 🙏❣️🇮🇳❣️🙏
Just avoid Westerners. They tend to be rude. I've been traveling around our magnificent India for over a year now, and the one thing I've learned is that if it's a Westerner, it's best to avoid them. Just cross the street and stay away. Hamare layek nahi hein yeh log. Jai Hind 🇮🇳
you're not a parent, it's never ok to pick up a child without asking the parent first.
You should have taken guide. They know the corners of the temple and show you intricate details that you can't find by yourself. If you happen to visit any other UNESCO world heritage site do and again do get a guide please its worth it. Next you should go to Khajuraho (Chandravashi lineage temples, Hampi is Suryavanshi lineage)
