- Quick view on how I approach compression tests. This one on the 71 GMC truck. We knew it was going to get pulled anyway; I wanted to know a little more info before it comes out. We for sure found a problem!

Keep us updated on the GMC rebuild, I have the same truck that has the 402 great to see you saving one
Very cool! I would have loved to have found a factory big block truck! But this one had a/c and the old guy I bought it from was pretty cool so I’m happy.
if you suspect bad rings or exhaust valve not head gasket issue is causing this problem the easiest way to determine ring leak is to squirt a little bit of oil into the suspected cylinder spark plug hole, turn over the engine 2 or 3 times. then retest compression on that cylinder, if it is a ring issue you will see that you compression number has gone upward in range. the oil is helping to seal the bad ring. THIS IS HOW YOU KNOW IT IS A RING ISSUE not a stuck valve or valve seat.
Awesome! I did this last spring with the 350 in my Studebaker, cylinders 6 & 8 were 125 psi, the other five were 150-155 psi. I drove it for the whole summer and it started smoking pretty bad, I'll be pulling the 350 soon as well!
Anything under 120 always seems to indicate problems are here or coming soon. I wasn’t concerned. I knew I was rebuilding this one anyway. Going with a mild cam and an overdrive trans. Should make it fun to drive around town and down the highway. Good luck with your rebuild!
@@MuscleCarSolutions Thanks! When I drove it to winter storage it started misfiring, I'm pretty sure it has a fouled plug. Good luck with your rebuild too, overdrive will be nice!
Do you check engine compression before carburetor compression? And is there a video that you have from check list from beginning to end. You have great videos. Just subscribed
Nice video Brian, two question s when will you be tearing down the engine, and weren’t you up in the NW when I first started watching your videos
Awesome always to see your show! 😁👍
Thank you sir!
I have a 1995 Maxima. I was doing a compression test on it after new rings and pistons. After repeated trials, I heard a noise and the psi on cylinder 6, I think, dropped from 125 to 50. It stayed at 50psi for a while and came back up to 125 psi on its own. Do you have any ideas what might have happened?
What should the compression be for a healthy small block Chevrolet?
Thank you for the info and your knowledge
Thank you sir! Very much appreciated.
As always great video!!
Thank you sir!
Just a heads up, I've had horrible luck with those harbor freight compression testers. I've gone through 3 of them because they always read a max of 120psi. I went and checked out one from Auto zone and all cylinders were about 160ish. I'd go rent one to double check.
When I bought the first one I took it back because it read really low. These I’ve had for around three years with no issues. I had a repair shop for quite a few years and it read pretty close to the other snap on ones we had. I’m sure it’s not always going to be perfect. I don’t expect much from a cheap tool. As long as it’s consistent and it’s not my primary source for making a decision. The way this thing smokes, it was destined to be pulled long before this video was made. She’s got a serious oil consumption problem!
@@MuscleCarSolutions i burn 2qts every 400 miles. Today it shut off while driving twice.

Great video, enjoyed it 👍
Coolio! Thank you!
Would the leak down test confirm the issues with those cylinders?
It should. Wish I had more time to do it but the engine and trans need to come out and get the work started. I’ll do a leak down video on this or the Chevelle down the road.

Thanks man! Hope all is well with you these days!
my 350 shut off completly while driving 30mph. After a few minutes and a few long cranks it finally started! Would bad compresion cause a shut off while driving?
Sounds more like an electrical or fuel delivery problem.
I have a 1990 GMC Sierra cut off on me goin about 50 slowing down to make turn so about 30 uphill truck died no start getting gas getting fuel I don’t know what it could be any pointers
