I have to say, this is probably one of THE BEST videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Clear, concise, engaging, and these folks just make me want to run to my sewing room, find one of the few stencils I do have, and play! It made me also think, a lot of this information could be transferred for use on an artful jacket using the Sashiko machine! Well done, HQ, well done!
Thank you for this great video. I have some stencils that require the use of the pounce pad but have never used it because I was not sure how. Now that I’ve seen you use them I can give it a try. Thanks again Handi Quilter
This is a great video! Thanks for teaching us how to use stencils and how to quilt using these patterns. As a beginner I couldn’t get into FMQ as I didn’t want to use a ruler nor I wanted buy ruler quilt foot attachment, which is different from non-ruler ones. I personally think these look much nicer than ruler ones and can quilt much faster. Thanks for the great tips! 💜
Just bought a simply sixteen long arm, so I was so happy to find this video! Now all I need is a video on why my stitches are bird nesting underneath. Yikes! Can't figure out the tension.
If you add baking soda and water in a spray bottle. Look on the internet for the correct ratios of baking soda / water mixture. For removing markers And spray your quilt with the baking soda water. After using the blue marking pen. The baking soda helps remove any traces of the blue marker. So when your quilt is washed you won't have to worry about any shadowing of blue marker left behind. Just a tip I read about on the internet and I think it's a great tip it works wonderful.👍
Hello. You guys are SO informative and helpful!! I don't really know what a registration line is. FYI there is a big shadow across where you are quilting, so we can't see your creative fills, template patterns, etc. I want to get out my flashlight LOL. Thanks so much. You've really given me "permission" to go for it and get to quilting fun!
Thanks so much for this video! This is the first time I've seen anyone using stencils to mark as you go with a quilt that is already on the long arm frame. So many possibilities!! Also appreciated the tips for making your own DIY stencil with the sewing machine. That looks much faster and safer than trying to cut channels in mylar with an X-acto knife!
Thank you for the helpful tips. I wonder if this would look nice hand quilted as I am still learning how to use the quilting tools on my sewing machine. I do not have the room for a long arm in my home.
It was a very informative video, but I don't own a longarm machine, so it would have been nice to see how to use the stencils with a regular sewing machine.
Love the scaling up from 3.5 to 8” size that’s the problems with existing stencils unless it’s an all over design...your block size maybe different...but you don’t need that conversion table they show to do it : it’s simple math proportion FYI 3.5 to 8, so you know it’s got to be larger, take 8 divide by 3.5 times 100 for percent increase, ie 228 % (round to 230% to put that into your copier, which they should have shown it’s 5th grade math!
This video came at just the right time as I'm a new long arm quilter and looking always for suggestions. I just checked with several stencil sites and can't find the gridded circle stencil you showed with the petal ruler (which I have). Do you have the supplier information for this stencil so I can get one? Thank you.
There are several different brands. I believe that one that was used in the video (it's hard to remember that far back!!) was from foreverquilting. Circle 3/6.
I would recommend "auditioning" different marking techniques to see what shows up. I have been known to use multiple techniques with the same stencil if necessary!!
What do you do if your stencil component doesn't quite meet the size requirement of the border? Do you stitch a half of a stencil design or lengthen it out or just 'fudge it' to fit? I assume you start at the corner and then work your way to the center, but what do you do if the designs don't align properly? Thanks!
It kind of depends on the stencil. I will either try to center the stencil and do a "part" on all sides and travel in the ditch of the block. Other times I just kind of "fudge it".
Hi there. What is “ washy?” Tape? Not sure i heard Kim correctly ? It was an alternate to the painters tape. She said her daughter collects “ washy” tape.
It's been a few weeks since you asked, but just in case you didn't get the information you need, it's washi tape (not washy). You can purchase it online and at craft stores. Lots of choices!

You can find stencils all over. Check with your local retailer, Golden Threads, online, etc. Also, Thanks for featuring two of my stencil designs. The Circle and Rays Stencils (@ 36min) which comes in 6 variations and the 1'' on-point Square grid stencil (@46.5 min). All 22 of these stencil designs can be found at www.forever-quilting.com .
This is informative to see what I could aspire to; however, this is beyond beginner. White on white was not practical as a demonstration and enlarging a pattern is more advanced. As a beginner, I don't have a laser light. Again as a beginner, I don't have a long arm. Show me on my home sewing machine please. Too many ideas for a beginner., this might have been better as a series progression.
I love this idea of making stencils! Quilts can be very personalized and extra special. Thanks so much for sharing!
So many great ideas, thank you!

Make sure that you are pulling up the bobbin thread when you start and hold onto it when you start stitching!

Can’t wait to see tomorrows show!!
Thank you. Great information. They hang on the wall so need to get using them more.
Love the idea of the scaling!!!!
Really awesome video. Thank you !!
Leaned a lot! I haven't tried stencils on my mid arm but I'm ready to try thanks to all the great info! Thank you!
Just watching this now. Thankyou - this really helps!
Glad it was helpful!
When making your own stencil wouldn't it be advisable to get & use your dull needles? That's what I would do. Awesome tutorial !😢

Only thing missing was how to use your laser light on the front of your machine following a stencil as you stitch. Excellent video on stencil use.
Great video. Thank you!

agree; verbal instructions are great, but there is nothing like SHOWING how to do something.

Jan, the circle ruler is the Circle 3/6 FQ106-S. It can be found at www.forever-quilting.com .
@@kristinawhitneyhqstudioedu7013 Thank you so very much!
The yellow is really difficult to remove.
Do you have the bobbin in when sewing around pattern without top thread
My favourite tool is my “fruxion” pen. It’s amazing. Just iron off. It completely disappears
Be cautious with the frixion pens as they leave residue and the marks come back if the quilt gets cold.
what is the name of the circle with the rays stencil that she used with a ruler

Please use a darker color thread so we viewers can see your great patterns and quilting! Thanks
I’m late tuning in so probably you answered this already...How would you mark if you are using patterned fabric, not solid?
I've found that the white pounce powder usually works well on printed/patterned fabrics.
I would recommend "auditioning" different marking techniques to see what shows up. I have been known to use multiple techniques with the same stencil if necessary!!
Does anyone know the brand of the marking pen she uses the most? 14:30

@@HandiQuilter thank you ! I enjoyed your videos and I'm trying to get my materials

Great information. One question, could you record on the computerized model and enlarge or reduce it with the modify tools? Thanks for sharing.
Dwight, that is a fantastic idea!! Yes, you could do that!
I went out to your shop to find the proportional scale, but could not find it. Please let me know where I can get it. Thank you.
You can find it here:

Where can I get stencils
Two hints: 1. Pounce chalk is easy to stabilize with Aquanet hair spray. 2. Pounce chalk can be vacuumed off.
Great tips, thanks Alison!

I think I would not put a stencil quilt picture on that very busy fabric. You won’t see it very well.
There’s a shadow in the way U really should fix that. Thank you
