Makita GD0600 Corded Die Grinder Review - A Very handy Tool For Any Busy Workshop!

  • I purchased this makita GD0600 die grinder for chainsaw carving projects, but it is a very versatile machine with lots of uses around the workshop. I purchased Kutzall Extreem 1/4" shank burrs for carving and a fairly cheap set of five carbide burrs which proved to be very good for both wood and steel.

    *For the price, this is a pretty decent grinder **MyBest.Tools** With 90 psi shop pressure is hard to stall even when material galls up in wheel. I've got three of them now, two of them I bought back in 1992 and they are still going strong!*

    I looked after a review for this exact machine as I wanted to see it in action before I buy one.
    As expected Makita delivers what's needed.

      @@RussellPlatten I ended up buying one after watching this, picked it up yesterday. I’m pretty impressed with it actually, a lot bigger than what I was expecting it to be, I got it to replace my £20 dremmel rip off. I use it mainly on metal to prep for welding or to finish after welding, so far so good!

    Try to run the carbide burrs on high speed (20000-25000 rpm) if you got a rpm selector on the Makita.Those type of burrs become fragile in low speed.

    Your review is very helpful, I'm learning about these die grinders, my Dremel did break so I was looking for something more durable. I see this tool online, it can come with either 110Volt or 230Volt, I want to see if it uses a domestic powerplug or the industrial type (yellow 110V and or blue 230V plugs). I see that yours has the UK powerplug, so this is perfect for all my needs and is decent on price.

    Excellent video. I'm actually looking to buy this product but I only wish you could demonstrate more metal work. I'm currently using a Dremel-fake, primarily to cut 5mm thick copper and aluminium heatsinks and it's just not good enough. The only thing that concerns me is that it m ight be a challenge to use this to do complex cutting in tight spaces.. Any idea on whether there are any bits options for that?

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  2 роки тому

      There are a lot of bits to choose from Dimitry and you can pick them up fairly cheaply. Have a look at the bits on Amazon, you will be able to see what is available. :-)

    Great video! Thanks! Maybe a dumb question, but forgive me as I don't work with metal at all, only woodworking, but will this carbide rotary burr bit take away aluminum?

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  Рік тому

      It will work on aluminium Philip, but the bits may clog and require clearing. :-)

    Could you please demonstrate how you " anchored" the bit in the grinder and kept it anchored? My US version did not come with the wrenches. I am assuming you use one wrench to firmly grasp the area close to the shank and the second one to screw the cap.

    Excellent review, thank you 🙂 I wonder if you could help though as I was wanting to purchase this grinder but it says collet size 6mm and the Kutzall bits say 1/4 inch, I assume 6.35mm, did you find that they still fit without problems? Thank you. 👍

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  2 роки тому +1

      They are a tight fit Joanne, but workable. Just remove the cap and collet from the die grinder. Slide the Kutzall bit through the cap and into the collet and then place the collet back into the die grinder and tighten the cap. :-)

    Nice review. I'm sold. I was talking with you on your other video about the dremel router hand built router table. I appreciate this lesson greatly! You do a nice job showing what to do with the tools. The picture is getting clearer to me of which tool to use for which task (e.g. Dremel carvers/ grinders for finer /small work; die grinder for intermediate). I have a shed full of logs of various sizes, from storms that I have collected & kept for years, ready to go when they thaw out this spring, so I was thrilled to see you speak & demonstrate your work with such wood. I think I will need a chain saw as well, to deal with this storm wood. And last night I also happened to come across the idea of putting kutzall wheels on an angle grinder; have you tried that? Would you agree that it would be good for large material removal; die grinder for intermediate, & Dremel for details?

      p.s. nice carvings/ examples in the video.

    • @RussellPlatten

      If I were you, I would start off small. Get the router bits and carbide burrs for the Dremel and also some sanding drums for it. Keep everything as cheap as you can and use the 0.75" x 1.5" stock you have to practice and learn how to use the various bits and attachments. 1.5" is a little too narrow for relief carving, but you could glue and clamp two pieces togeather and make it 3". You will need a dust mask too. If you spend some time practicing and are sure that you want to move onto bigger projects, then I would buy more equipment to facilitate that. Chainsaws are very dangerous! I had a very lucky escape a few years ago when a kick back resulted in me chainsawing the right hand side of my head. An angle grinder with a Kutzall disk will remove stock quickly, but this is also a dangerous tool. Smaller is safer and you will soon find out that even small tools can be hard to control in many situations. Of course, you must decide how to proceed for yourself. There are some great videos out there of power carving projects. I often download line art and use that as a pattern for practicing. :-)

      @@RussellPlatten I'm going to take your advice; it sounds wise. One more question. I saw some inexpensive 1/4" bits, that are for lower speed drills, that have spikes all over & resemble the kutzall. Do you have any experience with those? ; e.g. DEWALT DWA4970 Steel 1/2" Hp Cylinder Rotary Rasp File . It sounds safer, at lower speed, & is only $3.78 on Az

      @@RussellPlatten I think the only thing I would really want a chain saw for is to harvest pieces of wood after storms, to cut off a chunk from a larger piece that I could not otherwise use/ carry. This seems the best route to quickly achieve this task??? even though i HATE the idea of a chain saw. I was thinking like a Black & Decker cordless. I like the idea of the symbolism of using storm wood to create a work of art from it (and live across the street from a park where there are huge chunks of wood after every storm); but I need to learn my woods better first (beyond fairly limited current knowledge), so I know what I am harvesting :)

      @@RussellPlatten I am sure I am going the right direction doing some building with the massive amount of wood I have gathered. (massive to me anyways; it is taking over the small areas I have available). I pray about everything, & had idea to use freeform wood constructions in my art/ paintings, & prayed for guidance. When I read a daily Word (in a Bible based life application teaching book), to my amazement, it spoke of the dude from star wars (I don't know stars that well), who played hans solo. At first, he was a failed actor, & took up the craft of woodworking, & building things. Since this has happened with perfect answers to prayer for 20 years, I am sure this was no coincidence, right when praying about my art. I may not do this forever, for ALL my art though, so your advice is wise, to limit what tools I buy. I am excited to get started. I am going to order those items you suggest to start. Thanks.
