your videos helped me a lot... if I could subscribe like 10 times i'd do that :D
Wow, thanks David for your awesome comments, you’ve made my day 👏😊
yeah, but what about diffusers outdoors at night?
Noooooo, knew there was something I’d forgotten. I’m on it 📷✨🌖🤣
Is there a video for that now?
This is sooooo good comparison of every version, you deserve more subscriber! Keep up your good work and thankyou for your comparison ;)
Thank you so much for those lovely words, it’s made my day, and thanks for watching 👏📷😊
I had one of the original Gary Fong diffusers. Eventually the plastic yellowed with age
I suggest to do a test with a combination of foldable lens mounted diffuser and reflector diffuser with flash pointing to the subject.
All these products just look as bad as they could be. Total waste of resources. That single paper according to me gives a better performance than any of those things bought with money. Bad, that he has died unsung.
Hello, I have watched both videos (outdoor, indoor), and they are great. Can you possibly advise, even make a video as to how these would work outside in a shaded area (using as fill in light). It would be fantastic to see the results. Many thanks in advance.
Hey that’s a great idea, I’ll get onto that ASAP, thank you, and thank you for watching 👏📷😊
@@rileyphotos That is fantastic, please can you notify me when it is done. Cheers.
What I want is a test outdoors with the flash as key-light, not fill. Mixing with bright sun doesn't show the effect very well. Please do a V3 at twilight, outdoors!
Good idea, and twilight is at a reasonable time at this time of year too. I’ll dig them out and do a test 👍🏻
I think light test should be done from the side, not straight into face. Straight into, you wont see any differences between shadows (as there are no of them), just the light intensity changes...
In an ideal world that would be a great idea, but as a working pro I know that 90% of on camera flash work is going to be straight on, if I have 800 delegates at a conference there is no time to use anything but in camera flash. if I had the opportunity to use off camera flash I wouldn’t be using a speedlight, I’d use flash heads and soft boxes, but in a scientific test you’re right, it would be a good idea. 👍🏻
Look I'm not having a go but for starters none of this is surprising, the modifiers that are designed to bounce light perform poorly and those that give direct light work the best, TBH all the light is terrible and of course it is they are tiny modifiers and at best they just rob you of a stop of flash power (outside). Can I ask did you meter the exposure and keep that the same?
Haha, well that’s told me. I’ve been a pro photographer for 37 years as has my colleague, that’s over 70 years shooting flash every day, and we were surprised at the results. Thanks for the view and the comments though, much appreciated, always good to hear from new photographer, cheers 👏📷😊
@@rileyphotos My point stands no matter your hundreds of years of experience, tiny modifiers that are designed to bounce light off walls and ceilings indoors are not going to work outside, one just looks silly trying TBH. I am by no means an expert photographer with years and years and years of experience but It's pretty obvious stuff no? BTW did the sky look brighter with all that light you were bouncing off it?
Coffee?
Here's a coffee story-
Somehow I've gotten "old", 78 Imperial, not Metric, years old, with the inevitable old-age aches and pains when walking/bending.
That pretty much keeps me from enjoying outdoor macro, and I'm very happy exploring the joys of macro photography indoors, with the BONUS of very available COFFEE!
Loved the video what do u think about comparing magmod to these diffusers (the spherical diffuser )
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching. I haven’t used a magmod, hope I get the chance to try one at some time 👏📷😊
apparently this is probably the only comparison video about flash diffusers I can find, truly helpful, I bought the Walimex Universal Fabric Diffuser, which is the “Softbox Diffuser” you called and it doesn’t do well outdoors, pretty much similar result like you tested it out
Thanks for your entertaining and informative videos. :-) Question: Do any of these diffusers work off camera as an alternative to an umbrella?
Terje, thanks for your comments, that’s an absolutely brilliant question. I use off camera flash all the time and have never even thought of putting a diffuser on !!! I’ll do another video test and we’ll find out. Thanks for watching and thank you too for that great idea 👏📷😊
The rectangular and octagonal softboxes have fairly big flat white surface areas that serve as sunlight reflectors even before the flash diffuses light from within, at the right angle and close enough to the subject it's no surprise that they have more success outdoors than indoors as the light reflected is additive. Of course, there's no beating a dedicated larger reflector as you would angle that more precisely than pointing a softbox covered flash might allow.
So basically, the ones that deflect is good indoor but shit outdoor. Softbox is opposite. Gary is just something in the middle.
Hee hee, tried a silicon small bag held on with a lacky. Also used the small inbuilt pop up bounce card. Results were impressive. Light and cheap.
Thanks for making this video. I personally prefer the effect of using the small rectangular diffuser compared to the reflector. It is because I noticed that the reflector caused uneven lighting on the face.
Yes the small pull out diffuser is very useful, particularly as it’s built into the flashgun and so it’s always there! Thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it 👏😊
The scoring of the flash diffusers seemed to defy logic.
Outside you simply need as large a diffuser as possible for soft light, but if the subject is wearing glasses you’ll get a huge reflection.
The front on flash without diffusion would be just fine on a sunny day. If it looks as harsh as the example, that’s what exposure compensation is for. There was negligible difference in hardness of the shadows between products as they were all so similar in size.
A reflector is great but lots of people hold them underneath the face which just gives a ghoulish upward light look. A reflector should be held up and reflecting light slightly downwards as the sun doesn’t come from below.
A reflector below I think should only be white and a distance away from the face so it is very subtle. Like if you were walking on a light toned floor.
If the bare flash is supposed to be so bad, save your money on a diffuser and instead get a cheap off camera flash cable so you can hold the flash up and to the side of the subject.
The test was to simply show the viewer a shot with and a shot without. It’s up to them to make their mind up. The scores are my opinion, nothing else. You are most entitled to your own, that’s the point, and I thank you for sharing it with us. It’s most enlightening, thank you for watching and commenting
Which one is the best for outdoor marco? thanks
I’d go for the photo r I think, either that or the hexagonal softbox. 👍🏻
How about diffusers for macro photography, not people?
Yes that’s a good point, a few people have commented that the one with the hole that fits on the lens is best for macro.
The Slanted Lens is still looking great!
(Wonderful video, by the way, thank you so much)!!
Thank you too!
Thank you for the video, really interesting. BTW that "stupid looks" through the lens defuser really beloved by macro photographers (thier clients definitely will not complain about the view ;-) )
You’re welcome Sanja. Oops, I hope I didn’t upset any macro photographers with the video, we love the close up world that you show us. Sorry 📷😀
@@rileyphotos my thought was more about, that each (or most) of them shine in some specific conditions (actually what this video very good shows).
really helpful video, theres so many diffusers its hard to tell which one to get. Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it, and thanks for watching 👍🏻😊📷
Hi Riley
What an awesome video and great comparison between many diffusers.
Im your new subscriber and i really enjoy and learn a lot from your channel, thank you very much for all the effort you have made to provide great content.
Diffuser vs reflector will be an awesome video, can't wait to see them compared in different conditions.
By the way i would like to ask a couple of questions for you.
1)Have you ever tried fstoppers flash disc diffuser(a 13 inch portable round softbox for on camera speed lights)
2)what is an ideal size for a reflector to carry for outdoor single person portraits?so that's it's easy and portable to carry which can do a good job.
I love taking portraits of my wife and do you think an18 inch diffuser like you showed in the video is big enough and just right size?
And what will be an ideal size of a reflector for indoors like to take some single portraits(upper body)and also sometimes infant baby photos and some small product photography?Do you think i will need more than 18 inch reflector for indoors for my mentioned needs?
Sorry I am a beginner and i'm asking for your suggestion
Thank you very much again!🙏
You’re welcome, thank you for those lovely comments. In answer to your questions, I haven’t tried an fstopping disc, they sound intriguing. The reflector size I find most useful on location is the 75cm. I think the small 18” is only really suitable for head shots. I love to use reflectors AND flash guns working together for great indoor shots. I hope that’s useful, best wishes for your next shoot, and thank you for watching 👏📷😊
Fantastic videos! I may be late to the party, but I am looking for the 10/10 diffuser for macro photography. My macro shots are usually outdoors (flowers, insects, etc.)
Thanks Ron, I really appreciate that. Good luck with the macro shots 👏📷😊
Really liked this videos style, approach etc. A proper comparison test between the inexpensive diffusers. Equally enjoyed the indoor test. keep up the great work! I’m now subscribed to your channel :)
Thank you Stephen, I really appreciate that. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. 📸😀
great video. what about magmod products ?
Yes a few people have mentioned Magmod, I contacted them but they didn’t respond.
Nice comparison
Thank you 👍👍
Having seen this video it's a lot easier for me now to get one or two of those modifiers
I’m glad the video was helpful, hope you have fun with the diffusers 👏📷😊
Mag mog would crush everything there
Very informative thank you 👏👏
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it 👏📷😊
Nice review job, but you are too concerned about looking foolish. People will only care about how the photos look. 😎
If only that were true Dale. I’ve been a pro photographer for 40 years and in that time I’ve learnt that if I turn up with photographic equipment that looks weird or cumbersome I guarantee that it would raise attention. I have found the trick clients value most, is your ability to take great photos whilst blending into the background. What they value most, is not noticing you were even there!
I would like to see that reflectors vs. flash diffusers video because that reflector picture certainly did not look better than most of the diffusers you tested here. And reflectors don't work in a host of situations outdoors and in those cases flash is the clear solution. I await that video, though.
Too much fluff before getting to the subject. 👎
I’m a professional photographer and always looking to learn more about UA-cam, so thank you for your feedback, it’s very helpful 👍🏻
@@rileyphotos I don't know that it's a lesson about UA-cam ... just my opinion and nothing personal.
Hey your opinion counts for me, you are the audience, and if the audience doesn’t receive what they need, then the transmitters at fault, and that’s me. I’ll tighten up the intro’s, that’s valuable advice, I appreciate it 👏📷😊
Great videos, I have just subscribed after watching both the indoor and outdoor flash diffuser videos.
I was all set to pick up the silver and white fan reflector from Amazon after watching the indoor video but the price jumped from about £5 to £20 overnight (ordering via Amazon Australia)... There is a combo package available though for about £10 that includes the winner of the indoor shootout, as well as a Neewer softbox (similar to the Photo-R but appears to fold flat into a small carry pouch ). Going to grab that after now watching this outdoor video. A reflector would be a better alternative for outdoors, but the softbox won't take up much room in my camera bag and might help out in a pinch when taking the odd candid outdoor shot.
Hi, I’m glad you enjoyed the videos, and it’s great to find Amazon have a deal with both the indoor and the outdoor winners. I wonder if they have been watching the videos 🤣 Have fun shooting with them and thanks for watching 👏📷😊
