I remember when I was first exposed to ELO. I did not see any way in hell that a legit rock n roll band could incorporate violins and cellos. Then I listened to "A New World Record" and was blown away. Then I saw them live... and was sold forever! Respect to Jeff Lynne for his musical genius and willingness to think outside the box.
I don’t even have to watch this to know enough to hit the like button! Jeff Lynne is one of the all time great singer, songwriter, musician, producers! So many great hits with ELO, Traveling Wilburys, even worked with the Beatles. Livin’ Thing, Sweet Talking Woman are a must, Jamel. Please get to Billy Joel at some point
Jeff Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce
Which is why Jeff Lynne played guitar at George Harrison’s tribute. That legendary performance when Prince threw his guitar up in the air at the end and it didn’t come down. Probably because of the FIRE he left after that solo...
Jeff Lynne another example of pure musical genius. Not only his work with ELO and his recent tour, Jeff Lynne's ELO, His contribution in helping form the "Travelling Wilburys" group with George Harrison , Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty . Not to mention his work as one of the best record producers in the music business. Incredible .
Such a unique band, ELO. Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan and also loved classical music so he and a couple of buddies decided to form a band which combined Beatles pop with orchestral arrangements. One of the most distinctive sounds in Rock music history.
I'm ashamed to admit, because the movie is really terrible (but it holds a place in my heart), but I was first introduced to ELO through the movie Xanadu.
I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is about reaction videos, certain ones in particular that people watch over and over. Subscribe to, check every day, etc. At first I thought it was just the reactors really loving a song and being moved by the same things I like. But now, I’ve followed different reactors and kind of stuck on your channel because you like the music I like, and it’s nice to see someone else like the same things. It makes us feel part of something bigger. That’s a small portion of why going to concerts is such a church-like experience for me. Validation is a nice part of watching reaction videos, but it’s much more than that. I think in our busy lives we are not as connected to other people as we used to be. We don’t have the time anymore to just sit and chat with people and listen to music together and talk about it. I used to do that when I was younger. “Did you hear that line said about...” and “Yeah, but did you notice that guitar riff?!” “Last year when I listened to that I was going through a breakup...” “I used to sing this in my room after an argument with my parents/boss”, etc. We used to just sit and enjoy things and contemplate together and songs were an avenue to open up about those things that we normally wouldn’t have just brought up in conversation. I think a lot of us have lost that because of our busy work/parenting schedules, and YOU, Jamel, helped bring it back. You are very real and personable. Do you know how many times I’ve almost talked at my screen at you? It’s like you’re here in my living room. Anyway, sorry this is so long. I needed to type it out and maybe some others have noticed the same thing. ✌🏼
Noticed indeed! So much of this rings true for me! I, myself would listen to our only 2 pop/rock stations in Medford, Oregon while building tree forts, and model railroads/slot cars. I got a bit older and, YES, the skating rink, then dance club. E.L.O. Somehow fit into every part of that, as did so many of the songs you react to Jamel. I think you are a one in a million and love your show. I thank you. And thank you “Crannbeathadh”, you hit the nail on the head!
Everything you say! Remember the thrill of saving up to buy a new album, rushing home with it to listen to it with your best friend, in wonder because only a couple of tracks would have been played on the radio, then dissecting all the lyrics ....... So much time, then.
Yes, and I also remember buying a new tape and driving around in my pos car with my friends and singing loudly. I still do that by myself on my commute, but it’s not the same. I want to share those feelings about heartfelt lyrics and their relevance to my experiences with others. I can’t wait to go to concerts again.
Agreed! My favorite ELO song.... it's the song that got me into ELO. The first time I heard it I thought it was a new John Lennon record, that's what made me search it out. Then I was like..."That's the band from Xanadu??!!"
Here's the story of the "Bruce Lyric line. Don’t Bring Me Down” for the Electric Light Orchestra’s 1979 album, Discovery, Jeff Lynne discovered that he had unwittingly caused confusion with one of the song’s throwaway lyrics. As he explained on the VH1 series Storytellers: “You know that little daft bit in there that goes [unintelligible]. I just made it up in the studio. It was actually ‘groose,’ which happens to mean something. The engineer was German and he said ‘How did you know that word?’ And I said: ‘What word?’ And he said ‘Groose… it means greetings in German.’ I said: “That’s good… I’ll leave it in.” He continues: “We started going on tour and every time we played it everyone used to sing ‘Bruce,’ so I said ‘Ah, f*ck it, I’ll sing Bruce as well’!
Yes!.. "Everytime I Think of You", which has fantastic backup singers.. or John Waite, "Missing You", and also Bad English, "When I See You Smile".. Same singer for all 3 tunes..
I really love this reaction. This one reminds me of my dad who passed away last year. He used to crank this song on his cassette player in his Scout when we lived in Ft. Leonard wood in the late 70s. It's probably also the first song I ever remember as I was 2 at the time.
Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".
Listen to Eldorado Overture/Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. Some of their earlier 70’s material is more prog. This is off their album Discovery which came out in 1979. Last Train To London, Shine A Little Love, Confusion, The Diary Of Horace Wimp, Midnight Blue, those are some other songs off of Discovery. Kuiama is a great 11 minute epic, from ELO.
Todd Dawson oh cool. Rush is my number #1 favorite band. Actually listening to The Trees right now as I’m writing this comment. Unfortunately I always wanted too but I never could. In terms of musicianship and skill Rush is sometimes unbeatable. I want to get the 40th anniversary. I also want to get the A Farewell To King’s, one. It’s just hard with Coronavirus. Stay safe and be careful. This guy ranked Rush albums, and he put Hemispheres in the bottom part of his list because it’s has only 4 songs on it. Everybody else I’ve heard talk about Hemispheres they say 4 great songs. Almost nobody agreed with him in the comments. Stay Safe.
Todd Dawson me too. Neil was a big influence. A lot prog and classic rock drummers were a big influence for me. Jeff Porcaro from TOTO was a big influence on me also.
E.L.O. stands for "Electric Light Orchestra", which is the name of the band. They were so well-known that everyone just knew them by their initials! 😁 It is a pleasure watching you get acquainted with them. 💜
@GreatNorthWeb Love it! It really tickled me when they used it in "Fargo" (the series). I think it was the 1st episode of the 2nd season. Great & unexpected taste in the music they've used on that show.💙 💙
@@TJ-id6ee Exactly what my best friend & I used to do back in the day, singing along at the top of our lungs! She's gone now, way too young. But music like that can bring back such happy memories.💙
My father and I dug out his old record player last year and he had an LP of Face the Music in his old collection. Absolutely great album. Definitely second Fire On High
I think you should react to „My Sweet Lord - George Harrison“ (one of the Beatles and close friend of ELO‘s Jeff Lynne, the singer) trust me you will love it! Bug of course after you‘ve done all ELO songs;)
He should also check out these other Hall & Oates songs: Private Eyes Method Of Modern Love Say It Isn't So She's Gone Rich Girl Kiss On My List Out Of Touch I Can't Go For That
So, the year was 1968, the place was Fillmore West auditorium San Francisco. Everyone was seated on the floor, "warm smell of colitas rising up through the air" (quote from Hotel California), very chill scene. We were there for Janis Joplin like always. When ELO , who we'd never heard of, was introduced, out they came in.....tuxedos!!
I love ELO, thank you. This song is on the movie 'Paul' (about that alien who ran into those 2 English guys (upon their return from my San Diego Comic Con)
ELO has always been among the upper echelons of the most amazing rock-n-rollers on the planet. In this song - I can't say for sure but I always believed em to be saying Groose, rather than Bruce. As in just making a sound rather than a name. Back in the day when I first heard them - I was totally blown away! I'm glad you picked this one to react to
The goofy Joyful look of happiness and grattitude when I saw that you aonce again acquiesced to our suggestions/requests and went ahead and dove into the pool of E.L.O.... Im Just plain giddy . Love the way you interact with your audience so open and actively. it makes us feel very much a part of the fun so, Thank you Jamel aka Jamal!
THAT'S THE INCREDIBLE MULTI TALENTED ( JEFF LYNNE ) WITH THOSE POWER VOCALS AND LEADER OF THE BAND JAMEL! :) HE JAMMED AND WROTE FOR SO MANY MUSICIANS THROUGH THE YEARS.
Awesome reaction on a great song. Thank You! Interesting to note that this band which was known for their string section, included no string section in this song. And to preempt the people calling out the guitars, guitars are not string section. The string section is composed of bowed instruments belonging to the violin family. It normally consists of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
@@Gabbaghoull Because they do not like disco or funk music. But this song is a worldwide hit club. Look the views : over 50M for "Last Train to London" and 2M for this song he react to. So why? Maybe you will have an explanation? No... I have one : hit of the hit. 😁😁😁
I remember being at my first roller skating party in the fifth grade, skating to this song with my first girlfriend. You can never capture that feeling as an adult. So nice.
The crazy thing is, this song wasn't even originally supposed to be on the album at all! It was a last-minute improvisation by Jeff Lynne because the running time on side B of "Discovery" was coming up a bit short, and he felt the album "didn't have enough loud ones" on it and could use another banger or two. So he slapped it together in the studio more or less on his own, taking a drum track from a previously-recorded song ("On the Run"), slowing it down, and looping it continuously, then banging out the basic melody on the piano and making up the lyrics on the fly as he went (though the actual vocal track was recorded separately afterwards, along with the guitar and Richard Tandy's keyboard flourishes). It was basically just a jam session (or "a great big galloping ball of distortion", as Lynne described it in the liner notes for the 2001 remastered version of "Discovery"); they didn't even record a string section for it, which was unique for them at the time, and they didn't really expect anything of it... and it turned out to be their biggest hit ever; it was their highest-charting hit ever in the USA, and their second-highest in the UK. Go figure. :-)
Jamel, The lead singer is Jeff Lynn, he was also in the travelling Wilburies with George Harrison, and Tom Petty. You should really check and react to the video for while my guitar gently weeps, at the George Harrison tribute concert, especially as Prince does the most amazing guitar solo
Please do all over the world. There's videos of people dancing in all of the countries all over the world. It's my favorite song. Very inspirational and everyone would love it. Thank you so much for the videos in the past two days we just love this.❣💕👏👏👏🎙🎶👌
One of the first rock I EVER listened too. It is gigantic fun song. You can still dance to it today. ELO made videos for all the songs on the Discovery album, remember one night catching it purely by accident. The UFO at 5:30ish, the cover of Discovery.
Oh heck yea! I love this song! You never bring me down haha. I sing Bruce when we got this turned up in the car. It's a great song to sing along to. Awesome reaction. Your joy is infectious.
If you haven't done it yet, might I recommend the Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Prince and many others performance of George Harrison song When My Guitar Gently Weeps. Best version I have heard.
Speaking of the Beatles, at the top of ELO's career, John Lennon said if the Beatles were still together he would want them to be doing stuff like ELO.
Hello Jamal! Yes, E.L.O. has some really great music. In 1980 Jeff wrote, produced , arranged and sings backing vocals for Olivia Newton-John called Xanadu. Talk about this musical gem with Olivia belting out this phenomenal song. The official video is from the movie title Xanadu and I would listen to the original track 1st to not be distracted by everything going on. You’re ears will be happy! Thank you for your honesty and keeping great songs alive!
It makes me so happy that one guy of these younger generations, and across racial lines, makes this old white chick happy, happy happy! Plus you got Pink Floyd!
What makes the confusion between this and "Don't Let Me Down (btw, my favorite Beatles song and B-Side to "Get Back") more interesting is that Jeff Lynne stated that ELO's mission was to pick up where the Beatles left off. Great reaction...keep up the good work!
When I was a little kid , I and my sister would go to the roller rink ( skating ) and the 2 songs I remember them playing EVERY time : Dont Bring Me Down and Another one Bites the Dust
DarthAlbin -Yah, I hardly think E.L.O. is going to care one way or the other how folks say their name. Unless you know them personally? The thing is their sound! And now- I’m going to start calling them Eeelow as I got a kick out of it!! I’m just glad Mr. J is having fun listening to one of my fav groups (and I’m going to be 62-still rocking!)
Someone could refer to you a Liezzay Joonsoon because they like the sound of it and it makes them smile. That’s fine. It doesn’t make them correct, though. I didn’t tell Jamel he was pronouncing wrong, criticize him, or ridicule him. I didn’t give him direction about pronunciation. All I did was offer an illustration of how the band, their followers, and the general public have been referring to them for 40 years. Jamel could call them Hello, and you can call them Strawberry. To your point it doesn’t matter. In general, people prefer to be informed if they’re mispronouncing something, especially a name.
Fire On High! My local amusement park has an indoor Scrambler ride with a laser and black light show on the ceiling and has that song cranked. That was my first introduction to ELO.
"Jeff Lynne" the most underrated musical genius alive!

I was little kid, I had this on cassette, and I used to dance around to this in my bedroom in my underwear. I've always loved this song
Last Train to London is another great ELO song.
ELO's Rock n' Roll is king... and don't forget the wear your rollerskates
Another suggestion for Turn To Stone, or even Fire On High. The latter is an instrumental, but features backward talking at the beginning.
Fire on High is one my favs...the local carnvial used it in one of their rides. Childhood memories!
FIRE ON HIGH!!!!!!!
YAAASSS!! FIRE ON HIGH!
My father and I dug out his old record player last year and he had an LP of Face the Music in his old collection. Absolutely great album. Definitely second Fire On High
Love this song. It was the theme song for ABC Wide World of Sports that used to be on. My daughter also did a gymnastics routine to this song.
I think you should react to „My Sweet Lord - George Harrison“ (one of the Beatles and close friend of ELO‘s Jeff Lynne, the singer) trust me you will love it! Bug of course after you‘ve done all ELO songs;)
Love that song. 😍
Dude, check out some more Hall and Oates. Both “Rich Girl” and “Maneater” are well worth a listen.
One on one, too.
sara
I loved Daryl’s House. Miss that show.
@@brendalarrabee7361 he'd already done reaction of "Sara Smile"
He should also check out these other Hall & Oates songs:
Private Eyes
Method Of Modern Love
Say It Isn't So
She's Gone
Rich Girl
Kiss On My List
Out Of Touch
I Can't Go For That
So, the year was 1968, the place was Fillmore West auditorium San Francisco.
I remember in the summer of 1979 this song was playing on the radio none stop. Great memories
You will definitely recognize “Livin’ Thing” by ELO! Don’t stop with this amazing rabbit-hole! :D
I've liked this song ever since I first heard it in 1979. But this is the first time I've seen this video, or that I've even seen ELO performing.
PLEASE! React to cars-Gary Numan please jamel pleaseeee!
and Friends Electric !
Carl Vincent YEEEEESSSSSSS!!
I know riiight?! We can just see him groovin' to it!
Louis B YES!
Great song!!🙂
ELO has always been among the upper echelons of the most amazing rock-n-rollers on the planet. In this song - I can't say for sure but I always believed em to be saying Groose, rather than Bruce. As in just making a sound rather than a name. Back in the day when I first heard them - I was totally blown away! I'm glad you picked this one to react to
Love the ELO run, they're one of my favorite groups
The goofy Joyful look of happiness and grattitude when I saw that you aonce again acquiesced to our suggestions/requests and went ahead and dove into the pool of E.L.O.... Im Just plain giddy . Love the way you interact with your audience so open and actively. it makes us feel very much a part of the fun so, Thank you Jamel aka Jamal!
Jeff Lynne covered all genres of rock, and still comes back to the Beatles.
I was 7 in 1979 when I first heard this in my dad's car. Loved it, such good memories. Glad your enjoying it
At one point in my life I couldn't get enough of E.L.O. they have a few greats
THAT'S THE INCREDIBLE MULTI TALENTED ( JEFF LYNNE ) WITH THOSE POWER VOCALS AND LEADER OF THE BAND JAMEL! :) HE JAMMED AND WROTE FOR SO MANY MUSICIANS THROUGH THE YEARS.
I love your new tagline "We Don't Just Listen to the Music".... Next check out "I'm Alive" and "The Fall" from ELO!
The hit of the hit was "Last Train To London"
I love to sing along to that song. It's so fun.
My favorite! 😃
Go figure. :-)
Ya gotta do TURN TO STONE next! E.L.O. at the height of their artistic powers!
Four little diamonds, turn to stone, living thing , showdown..some of my favorite ELO
Thank you so much for the videos in the past two days we just love this.❣💕👏👏👏🎙🎶👌
The best way to listen to the song "Don't Bring Me Down" is through an ald style four channel stereo. The mix is incredible!
One of the first rock I EVER listened too. It is gigantic fun song. You can still dance to it today.
ELO made videos for all the songs on the Discovery album, remember one night catching it purely by accident. The UFO at 5:30ish, the cover of Discovery.
ELO has such a great sound. Just love it. I highly recommend you check out “TWILIGHT” from them. The sound and vibe is stunning.
Robert J Kral I only meant to stay awhile...
Yours Truly, 2095.
"Time" is such a great album in general.
One of the most underrated bands ever.
ELO Living Thing is a must as well
ELO was my first concert, crazy laser light show, will never forget it!!
This song came out my freshman year in college! Lots of partying with ELO!
It's E L O for Electric Light Orchestra. :-)
Yes. ee-el-oh.
My second favorite song by ELO next to Twilight. Thank you for brightening our day buddy.
ELOs Discovery was the first full record album I owned. I got it for Christmas along with my own stereo (record player w/ AM/FM radio).
This was one of the best songs released in a year filled with fantastic songs. It's still a great song to me.
Oh heck yea! I love this song! You never bring me down haha.
I sing Bruce when we got this turned up in the car. It's a great song to sing along to. Awesome reaction. Your joy is infectious.
i searched this and knew you'd be the first result. holy crap i loved it. great song, takes me back
I remember when this first came out...EVERYONE jammed to it!
"Shine a Little love" "Confusion" "Starlight" and obviously "Last train to london" my favorites of them
Went to Britain in 1979. This was on EVERY juke box in every pub.
If you haven't done it yet, might I recommend the Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Prince and many others performance of George Harrison song When My Guitar Gently Weeps. Best version I have heard.
I remember roller skating at the skating rinks and hearing this song over and over.lol, ofcourse when I was a kid in the 70's.lol
This song and "Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller Band are my all time favorites.
To this day I had always thought it was "Don't Bring Me Down...Chrrrrisss". Learn something new everyday!
Target, walmart and koles. You can't get any more down to earth than that.
Speaking of the Beatles, at the top of ELO's career, John Lennon said if the Beatles were still together he would want them to be doing stuff like ELO.
Hello Jamal! Yes, E.L.O. has some really great music. In 1980 Jeff wrote, produced
, arranged and sings backing vocals for Olivia Newton-John called Xanadu. Talk about this musical gem with Olivia belting out this phenomenal song. The official video is from the movie title Xanadu and I would listen to the original track 1st to not be distracted by everything going on. You’re ears will be happy! Thank you for your honesty and keeping great songs alive!
This song, instant chills, so good, so epic, grand grand grand
It makes me so happy that one guy of these younger generations, and across racial lines, makes this old white chick happy, happy happy! Plus you got Pink Floyd!
What makes the confusion between this and "Don't Let Me Down (btw, my favorite Beatles song and B-Side to "Get Back") more interesting is that Jeff Lynne stated that ELO's mission was to pick up where the Beatles left off.
Great reaction...keep up the good work!
"you looking good just like a snake in the grass"
E L O was a great part of my Childhood/Teens....i still love theyr music.
When I was a little kid , I and my sister would go to the roller rink ( skating ) and the 2 songs I remember them playing EVERY time : Dont Bring Me Down and Another one Bites the Dust
Jeff Lynee has done so much for music and discovering artist. That man can sang.
E.L.O.
Electric
Light
Orchestra
The letters are pronounced “E” “L” “O”
FINALLY GOT TO SEE THEM IN PERSON. seen their show in Houston. Was an AMAZING EXPERIENCE. after more than 40 years of listening to their music.
