      @@Jez_DeLuna - I agree Joel's fear of losing Ellie like with Sarah definitely was a big motive - of course a parent never truly gets over the loss of a child. But i also think he was thinking about all that Ellie lost in her young life already (her mom, riley, part of her innocence...etc). Recall what he said to Ellie when she shot ole dude Bryan back in KC, "you shouldn't have had to - you're just a kid". That scene hinted at another major reason why he lied - to give Ellie a chance at a real childhood free of the immense and unfair burden of being the "savior of humanity." He saw Ellie carrying so much on her shoulders plus here come Marlene and the fireflies asking for her 14 y.o. life on top of all that - without even asking. I think Joel saw that as the final straw.

      Joel’s spree wasn’t meant to be heroic, nor likeable. It’s the actions of a traumatized man reliving his daughter’s death and his failure to save her over and over.
      Also the Fireflies - noble as their objective may be - aren’t exactly “innocent.” Just look what happened to Kathleen’s crew after they overthrew the Kansas FEDRA.
      But nevee fear. Joel will reap consequences in Season 2. He almost did many times in Season 1, but Season 2 is all about the reckoning.

    • @joeg6478
      @joeg6478 Рік тому

      @@gilbertgeorgegiles - i don't think Kathleen's crew were fireflies but normal ppl who became consumed by vengeance after enduring Fedra's barbarism. you're right tho the actual fireflies were far from "innocent". they probly killed countless ppl with their bombs tryna liberate Boston. that group had blood on their hands even before attempting to cut Ellie up like David almost did. I'm not excusing Joel's actions but i feel like neither side was without sin. but i feel like it was more wrong for Merlene to put the burden of saving the world on the back of a 14 year old child becuz her group of grown adults failed to finish the job on their own.

    I like how in the podcast after, Neil Drucan said they asked play testers if they sided with Joel or not, and the ones without kids were 50/50 but the ones with kids were 100% on Joel's side.
    It's like one of my favorite quotes from Tenet, "we all like to think we'd run into the burning building, but until you feel that heat, you never know". As a parent, I'd do anything to protect my child.

    • @clarkmichaels822
      @clarkmichaels822 Рік тому

      I feel like that's missing the point. Saving your child is natural. But what if you know your child could save the world by dying, and you know that if you asked they would say they're okay with that. You would save them for purely selfish reasons. Not their benefit but yours.
      Joel knew she would've said yes and he knew the vaccine would work. But he got her out anyway and lied about what happened because he knew what he did was bad, beyond murdering all the Fireflies. He betrayed Ellie.

    • @zachrichardson8059
      @zachrichardson8059 Рік тому +44

      @@clarkmichaels822 It all goes back to the moral dilemma. By your comment, I assume you don't have kids, so you have a different perspective. The biggest argument is that neither side gave Ellie a say. Marlene even said they didn't tell her so she wouldn't be scared. That's where the biggest issue lies. Joel goes on a rampage because he isn't going to lose another kid. And the flip side, the Fireflies were perfectly fine with sacrificing her without giving her any choice either. If you want to be so strong on Joel "betraying" Ellie, both sides did. Which is the point of the choice. It's meant to spark conversation and different viewpoints. All have valid reasoning behind them but the biggest argument is that nobody gave her a choice, nobody.

    I think they were clever complicating this by having Ellie tell Joel what they would do afterwards - so in Joel's mind, Ellie was thinking already about the future they would have together, so when she wasn't given an option to choose, Joel could justify this all to himself by that. He knew of course what Ellie would pick, but that little interaction gave him a loophole. Brilliant storytelling once again.

      @@Henrique-wv9xq People are reductive with the meaning of part 2 because the story is so weak and poorly written. Part 2 bludgeons it's story together with extreme coincidence and characters making irrational choices to force the story where the writers want it. Easiest example, "Hey how are we going to find Joel? Oh nevermind, I ran face first into him on accident in the middle of a snow storm right as a convenient enormous hoard of zombies showed up out of nowhere, corralled us to exactly where I wanted us and then aside from like ten they disappeared like they never existed in the first place but unlucky me the one person most connected to my target showed up just in time to see the final blow and then we left them and Joel's literal brother alive because why would anyone seek revenge for the death of someone close to them? I am smart."
      It's enough coincidence to win several lotterys with characters making insane choices and the only possible justification for any of it is "because the writers wanted that way". My point is, people are reductive with the story because it doesn't stand up to the lightest scrutiny or thought, the writers came up with a message and then beat the story into whatever shape would get that message across fastest and loudest. Love it if you want to but as far as I'm concerned it's about as deep and meaningful as tattooing "Damaged" on Jokers forehead.

    To me, Joel made the right decision not only for him but for Ellie too. In the scene where he tells her they could leave, let it go, and live their lives, Ellie answers "what else could we do?" implying that she's doing it only to make her traumatizing experiences "worth it". Not because she has hope the cure will work, not because she trusts the Fireflies, heck contrary to what Marlene says, not even because she believes she could make the world a better place. Ellie wants to go with it because she's worn down by trauma and the guilt of having survived so many people that she feels she's failed. Which is what Joel sees, which is why he shares his story about wanting to be suicidal: because he recognizes the symptoms of that hurt, and guilt within Ellie.
    So all in all, with that addition, the writers literally put it on screen that Ellie *is* suicidal. Because of trauma, because of pain, because of guilt. Soooo... do we REALLY let her kill herself, use that trauma and grief against her, kinda hoping it's for the best? "The Greater Good"? Exploiting a young girl's trauma? Makes Joel's choice even more personal and intimate between them, since again, the writers went out of their way to add this whole suicide-thing, how it connects them both and how Joel actually can relate to the burden on Ellie's shoulders (which is something you feel less in the game, since Joel is not immune). And you say so yourself, if your kid wanted to be eaten by cannibals for whatever reason, you'd pull them out of there and be like "noo you don't know what you're talking about!"... but why? The end result is the same, a kid dying for the good of others (I mean, they'd feed other people so isn't that good? imagine if these people were starving or something? We could go far with this!). And if the kid chooses it so, why do we stop them because it's cannibalism and not scientifical researches? So can we say we know what Ellie is talking about when she says she'd be ready to die for this thing? When she says that her life "would have mattered this way" even tho, her life as she lives it right now matters too, which is literally what Joel tells her over and over again in this episode?
    Now the lying part is another thing. But I feel it's more to do with Joel's martyr-thing of carrying this weight on himself, rather than transmitting it to Ellie. After all, it was his decision and it's another burden he thinks Ellie shouldn't have to carry.

    Joel: It wasn’t time that did it…..
    😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
    I played this game 10 years ago and to this day it is one of the single greatest stories ever told. I remember debating with other gamers for over a year about if Joel made the right decision or not. The question of “You have a chance to save the world but the cost is that you lose the person you love the most in the world after already suffering that pain before”. The answer, the REAL answer, is that both Joel and Marlene made the wrong decision, because that decision should’ve been Ellie’s to make. In the Last Of Us (GAME) podcast Neil Druckman talks about how Joel and Marlene had no right to take that choice away from Ellie. She would’ve said yes, and then Joel would have no choice but to respect her wish. She wanted the deaths of all the people she had lost, Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, to mean something. Even if it cost her her life. And even though a small part of her knows in her heart that Joel was lying to her she feels that she can’t let herself believe that the only person she loves in the world took away her chance to save the world.
    Also I love that Ashley Johnson got to play Ellie’s mom Anna. It was a beautiful full circle moment that the woman who plays Ellie in the games played her mother in the show. And Lauren Bailey who plays Abby in Part 2 plays one of the nurses in the OR. And it sucks that even though we have to wait a couple more years for season 2, it will be worth the wait!

      Marlene 🙄 should’ve spent more time actually trying to figure out a cure rather than letting a bio student just go straight to cutting apart the brain of the only immune person they know. This is about Ellie. She has decided, no half measures, to complete this task despite the danger. It would be her choice. However, the show also made it very clear that she is absolutely not of sound mind right now. She is going through a very rough patch. The survivors guilt, the recent trauma... She would decide to end herself and she would feel ready.
      However, Joel knows this too shall pass. It's not about what Ellie would choose if Marlene had asked. It's about buying her more time to find something worth fighting for.

    49:54 Eric saying “it’s a tv show, I can work if they want it to work.” makes me so happy. So many people use real life science to say they can’t make a cure but the show literally goes against real life science by having a fungal disease be strong enough to affect humans in 2003 AND have a person be able to be immune to it. Ellie being immune shows that a cure is possible. Like, why can they accept that there is fungal zombie infection and someone who is immune to it, but draw the line at a cure being possible?

      Because the game never goes into detail in how that would work. Just that they think it would. Sure, you might be right, but they never explore that idea for us draw any conclusion. What the game does reinforce though, is that the fireflies were completely incompetent and had no idea they were doing most of the time. They just did what they think it was the best for survival, and it was terrible. If a game that is grounded reality, even with a wacky premise that fungal disease to be strong enough to affect humans, wants me to believe that a vacine would work, I need little more than "trust me". Then we can also get into the logistics of how would test it and distrubute the vacine across country let alone the world? Does that sound realistic at all? Not really.

      I’ve always taken issue with the fireflies rush to operate. There are so many other tests you’d want to run first with Ellie. You don’t want to blow your only immune person samples on the first day. Because if anything goes wrong you’ve got no fall back.
      They never justify why they were in such a hurry.

      I can suspend disbelief like nobody’s business, but come on. You have to be practical about core points. The world is a shithole. This could be the most brilliant doctor known to mankind. How is he supposed to function with broken, moldy equipment? How are they supposed to distribute this vaccine? How are they supposed to do any of that? And just straight up flash bomb, grab, sedate, and kill within 30 minutes? Right.

    This is, by far, by _FAR,_ the best change they have made from game to show: Ellie has had cordyceps growing inside her from birth, probably thanks to her being newborn her body learned to adapt and the fungus eventually entered a symbiotic relationship with her.
    Why is this such a good change? Because Marlene, in the game, was _absolutely batshit crazily stupid._ In the game, Ellie was bitten on the arm by a mutated cordyceps. From her arm, the fungus grew towards her brain, lodged itself there and there it stayed... So Marlene wanted to take out Ellie's brain and put it in a blender. You see the stupidity? It's a fungus. It doesn't walk around the body, it _grew_ towards her brain. Everything the Fireflies wanted could have been gotten by taking a sample from Ellie's arm. Worst case scenario, cut off her hand. We even literally fucking _see,_ many times in the game, that there is LITERALLY a growth of fungus around her bite mark. Why in the FUCK were they gonna take her brain out?
    Changing it so she had a fungus that lodged in her brain when she was a few seconds old and grew there her whole life, it actually makes sense: that's where it is, the easily visible fungus on her arm is not the special mutated one, it's normal cordyceps, so they need to get the super rare and special one on her brain. It's still a little stupid - obvious plan from finding out a human infected right after birth managed to become immune would have been to take a fkton of pregnant monkeys and inject a small dose of the fungus on the newborns to find out if it actually works, have the vaccine be produced through them instead of killing the only immune person ever - but at least it's believable that they'd think of that. There is absolutely ZERO reason for Marlene to go "well this fungus that starts in her arm and goes all the way to her brain is special... Let's cut out her brain, let the arm end stay there. People don't need brains as much as they need arms right?."

    • @chrischika7026
      @chrischika7026 Рік тому +4

      Well all of this is fiction so I dont get the essay you just wrote The reason for getting it from her brain is because thats where the "main" cordecepys is yeah her arm has it but it comes form the brain. Think of it has the nucleus if that makes sense

    • @mordirit8727
      @mordirit8727 Рік тому

      @@chrischika7026 yeah that's not how fungi work, at all though. Not a shocking lack of knowledge nowadays, but if you're leading essentially a small country with it's own science division during a worldwide fungal apocalypse, you'd think they'd know the bare minimum basics of the one and only thing they need to know about.
      Game Marlene seemed to believe, for some reason, that Ellie's cordyceps mutated on the journey to her brain; which is possible, unlikely as all hell, but possible... Even still, if _that_ were the case, taking out the portion in her arm and raising a lot of children from it would be the best way to go.
