I'm a judoka coming to BJJ and lower belts not being allowed to ask higher belts to roll has always felt like the stupidest rule. I have no respect for any school that operates like that.
I belonged to 2 schools. One made rolling mandatory part of class. The other gave the athlete the opportunity to just train technique and roll after class was over. The second one worked for me better. 👍🏽
We get to roll with whoever. But Sensei Tiago likes us to all roll together to build friendships, build yourself and others. But he wouldn't make us roll with anyone we feel uncomfortable with. But yeah, Tiago is always in the mix, every day! And personally I almost always roll with the stronger blue belts. I get great learning tips, and then when I go roll with another white belt, I get to try the stuff out. Good vid!
Some training partners are dangerous and will rip submissions or do high intensity takedowns if their ego gets hurt. I would rather say no than risk being out of the sport for a while. There’s a difference between a hard safe roll and a malicious “I will win at any cost” type of roll
I only started turning people when I got my blue belt. Because white belt see my blue belt and try to kill me while they are way bigger than me. Like +20 kg heavier (I'm rooster weight so they are many who significantly heavier then me). Some white are og they know.. I'm cool rolling with them

Im a wb. I avoid asking higher belts , out of respect. I would like your rules in my gym.
