Please keep up the detailed descriptions.. You are definitely helping me understand Small Engines way better and carburetors way better. I have been mechanicing on the side for 30 years and always feared carburetors are messing with him or touching him doing anything with him. In the last 2 weeks you give me a complete confidence on how to take one apart and clean it I'm excited I got an old engine that was on a tiller that a guy made it's a 10 horsepower generator engine that I got running several years ago. But it's been sitting outside with a tarp covered up. I'm going to try and bolt it to the bench here in the next month or two and get it going. Thank you for the detailed understanding on how carburetor works and the idle circuits and Etc. I've never understood how that worked until now.

I watched a couple of these videos and cleaned a carb on the almost same model gen they were throwing out at work. I had to buy a new fuel tank off ebay as the old was so full of rust I didn't want to try and deal with that. Now I am just waiting for the power to go out in a storm. But now that I have a working gen I can rest assured power will remain on.

Just writing to say "Thanks". I've been a science nerd since a kid (50 years ago now) and always understood the "principles" of engines and similar and had general practical knowledge.... I could replace air filters, spark plugs, do an oil change etc. But was never a "motorhead". You make his entertaining enough to hold my interest and explain the smaller details of the "mysteries" of engines clearly enough to make clear what's really happening. You nearly make me want to grap a mower or weed-whacker from the piles on trash days and see if I can get them going, just for fun. Again thanks.

Prime generator times are during and after a blizzard in Michigan.
      I'm originally from Michigan.
Here in Miami it's hurricane season we need them.
This year I'm buying a small one for our apartment.
The last one took out our power for 3 days.
      Lost everything in our fridge.
No TV or cell phone charger.
Thank God we had a huge battery collection and several portable cell phone charges.
      Plus plenty of books.

    It works perfectly.

Mustie1, This is the generator I have. It's a great generator. I ran this pretty much non stop for a week once and alot during three other storms. I just change the oil and empty the carburetor before I even put it away when the power comes back on. I told you about my maintanence schedule on the Honda generator video. I bought mine new in 2011 for $429 (I just checked my owners manual and found the receipt) and it still works perfect in 2020. Happy to see you wrench on something I have!!!!!!

You have changed my attitude to the VW air-cooled engines in particular. Have you ever looked into the Paul Pantone's GEET system of fuel delivery where it atomizes the fuel prior to entry to the engine. When the US oil giants got him jailed for this invention he must have something special!! Well worth a look.

I picked up a similar generator about 10 years back - that looks identical (except for the paint job). The original tank rusted pretty quickly - so I was able to order a new tank - then the carb float needle wouldn't seat - even after a good cleaning. A new carb - shipped from China (via Amazon sale) was only about $25 (including shipping) - and it's been running great for the last 4 years.

I got a better one, I was looking for a rear tine tiller a couple of years ago, and guy at our church told me he had one that I could have if I could get it running. He said it needed a spark plug in it I went over to get it, it was sitting under a tree, looked like it hadn't moved in years. I started looking it over and saw it did truly need a spark plug, it didn't have one in it at all. Been sitting there no telling how long with an open plug hole. I took it home not having much hope. After draining all the water and oil out of it, low and behold I did get it running again. I was eager to try it out I cranked it pointed it towards the garden, then found outsomething else. When you pull in on the drive handles. You better be wearing a pair of roller skates or something.that thing took off and almost jearked me down. So if someone says it needs something, they may be talking quite literally. Buyer beware.

2 months ago a guy wanted me to figure out why his generator wasn't running. I told him it was most likely the carburetor, so he bought a new one and then called me saying it was still running rough. I pulled the air cleaner box off and noticed the front carburetor gasket was blocking a hole on the carburetor. Sure enough he mixed the gaskets up and after I swapped them around it ran great.

Mustie, You arent guessing at all.Everything you described is exactly what is actually occurring when the idle circuit is clogged at the idle jet. I have 45 years experience with Lawn and Garden style engines. BTW, the main jet (tube with small holes) is also commonly called the "Emulsion Tube". On any small engine float adjustment, if the float sits high in its inverted position, the only proper repair is to change the float pin seat. (small rubber seal). It has become swollen from the ethanol in most gasoline found today. RUN ALL YOUR SMALL ENGINES ON COLEMAN STOVE FUEL. ITS NAPTHA AND HAS A 5 YEAR OR MORE SHELF LIFE. NO ETHANOL AND TREMENDOUS SHELF LIFE, PERFECT FOR EMERGENCY GENERATORS.

Had (have) the same issue with my trusty old Coleman powermate. I went to start it a couple weeks ago and it ran fine for a couple minutes then it went wide open. Luckily I caught it before it went "kerphukko" all over my driveway. Looks like I have another project to start this weekend. Oh joy!

without the "guts" in it that frame make a good tool "caddy" and work seat in my
shed when working on my (T)rusty old bike .box/tray it out so can load up the tools
needed for the job in hand ,As over the pond may have to hit the car "boot" (trunk)
sales to find dead generators to fit out and sell on to old fart bikers with sheds
Thanks Mustie1 this time next year be wealthy ! LOL

As a service tech for a power equipment company I deal with much of the same stuff as you, however when I get this involved into a customer's machine it sometimes is hard to call it quits. I would end up having to pull that engine apart and fix it over giving it back running worse than it did when delivered. They're not all money makers. Some day I'll figure out balancing point. Thanks for the great vids.

I thought you made a racing generator @33 min. But seriously, I had Generac that served me well for many years. But not without some assache. It was hunting just like that one, so in the interest of time I just bought another carb, but for some reason that carb wouldn't idle down under no load. Anyway, a buddy of mine spotted a problem with some "artificial snot" that was used to seal one of the Welch plugs that had broken down and causing a vacuum leak. Sealed it with some RTV, put the old carb back on, and it was good as new. And yes, it really did look like dried snot. Then it got stolen.

thanks for taking the time to explain and dissect the carb and resultant potential problems..i feel confident now after watching your videos..in another life time you would have made an excellent instructor at a trade school or college that offers mechanics..you just have an easy way that you explain to rookies like me...btw..did anybody ever tell you that you look like David Gilmour?

Wow- I'm disappointed you gave up on it like that. The teardown-repair-reassembly would've made a nice video series. I guess if you have many generators you get jaded after a while as to their value to you is diminished.

Maybe fix it, and give it to some favorite business or charitable organization? Keep it for a back up- when the camp gets robbed again? It wasn't a "total loss"- he said it has some good parts.

I know right. .he should have just watched how to reset a governor before trashing it.All he had to do was reset the governor. Nothing broke.he simple unset the governor and had to resst it with the adjustment..he totally forgot that when you remove the throttlelever and then try to reattach it he slung the governor pin out because there was no tention on it. He just has ro.reset the pressure on that pin with the Gov screws and spring then attach the throttle at idle position.geeze

I would say adjust the governor screw, a model I wrkd on had a yellow bolt to adjust gov, which wrkd the throttle. got it up to 3600 measured volts at 120 and put a good load on it. yup a good carb clean job will probably find u w a good generator. Good luck and happy about ur good deal!

Been kinda binge watching your videos. It's amazing what a throwaway society we live in, people spend money on these things and don't have enough energy or motivation to to do some basic maintenance, then just toss them away when the carb gets plugged. I'm sure they sit around some coffee shop telling anyone who will listen that those Chinese generators are just total crap. The ironic thing is that most of these people buy the generator for emergency power in case of weather, war or zombie apocalypse, but would never get the thing running if needed.

i am no mechanic but i suspect when you removed the carburetor the governor lever inside the engine twisted relative to the leaver on the outside. (screw on outside to adjust)
to test start the engine without connecting the governor to the carb and try twisting the lever each way with the throttle set to about half to check for certain if it is working or not dont want to see potentialy good stuff trashed.
the governor lever inside is limited in movement 1 way by the mechanism but the other way it can move completely away from the governor resulting in no effect i believe it just needs to be adjusted. (but i am no machanic)

I think exaclty the same ! You can adjust/reset the governor rod buy unscrew the nut (8mm ?) on the governoner lever, turn the rod of governer (that go inside the motor) full counterclockwise with a flat screwdriver and block the 8mm nut again. Then It should regulate :)
Had the same problem on an Honda clone a few month ago, I pulled too much on the linkgage when I removed the carb.

The best tool to remove the main jet is one of those mutitools screwdrivers, that you can flip the end around, that has flat head, phillips, 5/16s and a 1/4 drivers...The flat head driver has a long shank that match's the jet...thanks for the videos...
