Not sure if someone already said it in the comments, but the camo Les Paul came out years before Dimebag passed away. He used it on the 1919 Eternal tour and I'm sure it was to help promote his military themed record and be a tribute to his Dad who fought in WWII and he participated in the events of D-Day at Omaha Beach as well as Normandy. Zakk even did a photo shoot with Dime on a guitar world magazine (which I still have) with that camo les paul in like 2002 or 2003.
There’s only 49 in existence of the normal custom run, 50 was destroyed in transit unfortunately, I have number 49. Edited* not number 50 but one of them 👍🏻 haha, thanks for pointing this out.
@@MP-vd1ck Zakk's fans are pretty diehard, it would be great to hear an unbiased review on his guitars (as Trogly has stated even though he respects Zakk as an artist, he isn't particularly a fan.)
@@OhhWeOhh im not a die hard zak fan but I do like Zacks BLS's albums and the Ozzy no more tears album but I also think no rest rest for the wicked is the worst Ozzy album Bob daisley wrote for that zak played on.
And it certainly isn't to be used by your forearm. Zakk plays is guitars LOWWWW, meaning the angle of his arm is nowhere near the toggle. It is an odd place to put it though, considering how often Zakk switches pickups (often multiple times within a solo).
There’s a really great video of Dime’s basement guitar vault. I’m trying to remember who did the video but there so many guitars with so many stories it’s a great watch. I’ll try to find and link it here
So trogly some info for you. Dean Zelinsky of Dean guitars made the model the splittail for Zakk before Gibson did in a bid to get Zakk to move to Dean. Also I own the Wylde Audio Warhammer and I love it so much and built very much the same way as this Gibson ZV. Great Vid and I would love if you could compare a Wylde Audio guitar to a Gibson Zakk signature. Edit: forgot to add the Dean version called the splittail had a muddy bullseye finish and can be seen being played in one of Zakk's National anthem covers. Also the pickup selector is placed where it is because that's where Randy Rhoads put his on the polka dot V by Karl Sandoval
Thanks for a very nice review! I love my SGV Buzzsaw #10 signed on the back by Zakk. Bought it last fall after a music store in Sweden went out of business. Has been standing behind glass since 2008 and "wasn´t" played. I just love it when i´m in a Heavy Metal mood!
Apparently Zakk was shopping between Gibson and Dean at that time because Dean also did a similar design that actually went into production for a short while, they called it the splittail
What it was that Dime got one made for Zakk by Dean. I'm sure there is even a video somewhere of Dime giving it to Zakk. I think because of contractual agreements Zakk got Gibson to make him one he could legally play.
Dean made the splittals before Gibson started making the SGV and they were very similar, the splittail has a smaller waist and a Dean V headstock which fits the guitar much better IMO thats about the difference there is. I have a transparent red one myself.
@@WalkenDead My main guitars that i pretty much always play are Dean classic shaped V´s and i think the V headstock especially suits the classic V. When you love V´s how can you not love two V´s in one even more ? :-)
I asked him directly through Instagram why he left Gibson & the reason he personally gave me was that after all of those years he simply wanted to be able to have his own brand. Said something around the lines of time for the son to branch out on his own away from the father.
When I first saw these, even as a metal fan, I thought they were a little obnoxious, but seeing this up close, I really really like it! I especially like the offset SG horns.
The Buzzsaw design was inspired after a zippo Zakk found at a gas station on tour from what I remember reading in a magazine about the time this guitar was made. He was talking about the Les Paul in the interview.
I always thought the Wylde signatures looked cheesy, but listening to the demo on this one made me want to play. The EMGs sounded pretty good! I grew to like the over-the-top finish, too. It's something different. The shape is definitely not my style, but I do like the idea of mixing and matching models to create a new shape. Maybe a cross between an SG and an Explorer or Firebird would've looked a bit less cumbersome?
I really dig this shape because when I was in jr high school I drew this exact shape. With the strap button location neck diving should not be a problem.👍🤘
I think ya might have missed a model in the Zakk line up, the Black and mirror bullseye Les Paul. I missed them when they came out and the shop wasn't sure if they were releasing more or not. Well , never happened as far as I know and the first run was a small one. Unfortunately the only Zakk Wylde guitar I have is the Epiphone version of the Grail. I bought it back in 2004 brand new, still have it too, wouldn't sell it. I have a few of his pedals and Zakk was kind enough to sign my Marshall jcm800 4010 combo. Seems like anything he has made seems to work for me! Great video, cheers!
I was at the Ozzy 2008 gig in Melbourne Australia ( yeah im from Australia) at the end of Paranoid Zakk unplugged one of these and threw it into the audience. Was bit of an experience seeing one of these fly through the air then about 500 people swam for it
I have an epiphone ZV all black. Not a bad beater guitar at all. Also have a buzz saw like shown on the ZV (orange and black) epi LP. I only wish that I could have came across some gibson zakk guitars for a good price. Hard to spend top dollar or more for a extreme design. Thanks for sharing 🤘
If I remember what I heard elsewhere, Zakk wanted a spiral design, but his friend painted on a bullseye and that stuck. As for neck dive, as you once said, the weight in a Les Paul is in the maple top, so I’m guessing a maple neck is heavier than a mahogany one (I don’t have blanks laying around to compare.)
I love it! one of the best designs I've ever seen. Good on you Zak! If I wasn't living on $509 a month disability, I would buy one in a heartbeat. Love it!
I am ozzies no 1 fan but never heared of zakk wylde. It would have been a more desireable guitar if gibson made the neck binding orange or black too ,,,including headstock. His own brand guitars have these incredible beautiful wood gain showing through the paint
I would love to own one of these guitars. There’s a Pelham blue version that I’m absolutely in love with and I think there’s only one or two owned by Zakk. It’s a pipe dream but a guy can be aloud to dream
I'm now waiting on you to review a high end Dean ML, Trogly - I honestly think you're gonna fall in love with the shape. Putting an explorer-style shape and a V-style shape together sounds goofy until you play one. Gotta work on your rock stance for THAT video 😉
Been following Zakk since 87 roughly lol...that edge profile is called a chamfer, most are 45 deg..it's a crazy guitar, i played his Les Paul and the neck was massive and the guitar was heavy and if you add that chain strap he uses its gotta weigh 25 lb.. lol...
That toggle switch placement probably because zakk wylde love to use long strap like a punk rocker. It would be hard for him if the toggle switch placed in standard position
It makes me chuckle when you refer to ZW as "this guy". I mean, he's just a living legend of the metal guitar community, but hey, we have surely heard about this guy
Not usually a huge fan of EMG's but that sounded effing wicked. Trogly dude, you played better than I've heard in a while so it clearly resonated with you on some level. I agree about the design though, not my cup of tea. I prefer the 'Bullseye' LP too.
I remember before these were released a video surfaced of Zakk playing a Dean version with a splatter bullseye and then these just dropped and Dean released a “split tail” model that was similar
I can't speak for everyone who likes this shape, but the reason I like these X-shaped guitars is definitely because I like having that big shelf to rest my arm on, and they're better to sit with than a V would be. Personally, I prefer Ibanez's iteration (the Xiphos), because it has a larger chamfer on the sides which makes it more comfortable.
You should do epiphone's new prophecy range of sg's, lp's, v's and the new futura/ explorer mash up the Extura. I'd like to see you review the proprietary Fishman fluance pickups
I HAVE A QUESTION!!!! I am looking for a certain guitar or models similar and I was wondering if I had to pay you for help with that. I am very new to guitar and am very unfamiliar with models and such. So would I have to pay you like your website says or just email?
Actually I think the guy with the most Gibson signatures is this pretty good 50s guitarist named Les Paul. I’m pretty sure they started making his signature guitars in the early 50s and still do today.
