I believe the camo was inspired from Dimebag, or if memory serves me correctly, Dime painted the first one and gifted it to Zakk. Dime would throw wild parties and they would break the camo out and play paintball. I have an older guitar world magazine where they talk about it. Will have to bust it out of the archives and give it a read. So I might be back with more info here sometime.
I had the Epiphone version of this guitar when I was a teenager. Only Les Paul I've ever owned, and I regret selling it every day. I've always been more of an SG guy but man, those Wylde Les Pauls are just something special.
I believe his original camo guitar is called Stormin’ Norman after General Schwarzkopf. It may be a refinished Norlin maple fretboard Custom, but don’t quote me on that.
Yeah, Zakk Wylde is certainly one in a Million, a Crazy Strong Player, a Crazy Great Player. Cool Guitars too. Not so much my style but there is no denying they are hot instruments. Great Review, Thank You. BTW, I watched the Video of Zakk shredding on an acoustic guitar, I wouldn't have been surprised to see that flattop guitar explode or burst into flames the way he was dominating it in every way possible.
@The Trogly's Guitar Show It is so cool watching your personal growth over time. * Playing improvement over the years * Better quality videos and productions * Better quality reviews *Awesome guitars This show was great in the beginning, I had no idea how GREAT it would become in time. My favorite, has got to be the Steve Howe ♥️ That guitar is so beautiful, awesome grain. Thanks for all that you do and share with us. Thanks.
Zakk originally wanted his Les Paul painted with a cool vertigo design so that when he hit the stage with Ozzy for the first time, he would not look too much like Randy Rhoads with his white Les Paul. He was presented the painted guitar just before he took the stage and saw that the guy had misunderstood him and painted a giant bullseye on the guitar. He completely hated it!!!! But he had to start the show so the guitar went on stage and quickly became his signature. The camouflage version was inspired by his friend Dimebag.
Zakk Wylde is a true original, he called Jim Marshall (Of Marshall Amps) "Dad" and refers to anyone he respects as "Father" (etc. Father Phil, Father Ed). I used to have a Zakk Wylde Epiphone bullseye that someone had modded with the proper EMG 81/85 set. I know what you mean about the "power" that thing sounded absolutely monstrous. Could've just be the pickups but hey-ho.
This signature guitar phenomenon he's talking about is so legit I got a John Mayer Silver Sky some time ago and even though I mostly play my partscaster I always feel significantly better when I pick up that Silver Sky it's a completely different world
I just picked up a 2006 Epiphone Les Paul Custom Zakk Wylde Camo Bullseye......and it's freaking awesome. Made in South Korea at the Saein plant. Has EMG HZ pickups. For a 2006.....this in in near perfect condition. Blessed to have it.
In late 98 or early 99, there was a Zakk signature Les Paul that was just a completely raw looking top. No bullseye graphic, looks almost unfinished. I think they came out right before, or at the same time as the grail bullseye Les Pauls, and I only remember seeing them on Japanese websites. So they may have only been sold for the Japanese market. Another little fun note - the "gumby zakk" on the back of the headstock was handdrawn by the original Black Label Society drummer Phil Ondich, who is a friend of mine. Never received a cent for it (or even a free guitar) lol But it's his artwork!
It's so cool to not only see the quality of your videos increase over the years, but also your watching your playing progress. I remember seeing an older video and all you cared about was clean finger style. Now you shred like a wylde man! Great job as always! I wish they would offer norlin era reissues with abr-1 bridges and maple necks. I would love one without a bullseye.
I love that you bring up the signature phenomenon. I have a Washburn Dime 333 that I've always wanted since I was a kid. Dimebag Darrell was always my hero. Every time I pick up that guitar I feel a sense of confidence. I always thought it was just me.... Great review!
Austin - You see those small scratches on this guitar? I am telling you buddy, buy some "Players Kit" guitar polish and you can remove most if not all of those!! I had a bunch on my Sully Erna and it took them right off!! Trust me, spend the $25 on Amazon and give it a try. Ya know, when you first showed is this in the other video I did not like it at all! But as soon as this video started and I saw it after you polished it up, I kind of dig it now! I love the maple neck Les Paul's and wish Gibson would go back to them!! Maple is a much harder wood than Mahogany and they may have played a role in why Gibson went to Mahogany, easier to tool.
@@pvtlehto lol.. now I wasn't meaning it like that. I have tried all kinds of polishes and stuff and this players kit blew my mind with how well it works and took off those annoying polishing scratches.
@@pvtlehto buy the players kit man I'm telling you it works great! You get two tubes of it, a red and s blue. The red is for like everyday use and the blue is for removing scratches. Only do a small section at a time. Apply the blue just like regular polish, then rub it off using some elbow grease. If there are still scratches do it again. I found it usually takes 3 or 4 times to get those polish scratches off. Then once they are gone use the red whenever you are going to polish it as normal. I have a couple of black guitars and it worked wonders. Amazon sells it for $25.
One of the things I love about the Zakk sig models is the maple instead of the mahogany necks. My favorite personal guitar is my modified ‘77 Les Paul Deluxe with a 3 piece maple neck. The awful finishes are the only thing that ever kept me from wanting a Zakk model. I much prefer the EMG 85 in the bridge and a 60 in neck.
Zakk got this guitar made and Dime had a camo Washburn signature made around the same time as well, they featured both together on the cover of Guitar World

These are pretty cool guitars!! I just saw a prototype epiphone version of this sell on ebay! I was going to bid on it but a day later it went up in price astronomically !! Never seen a proto of this before kinda cool but of course the gibby is better because it has the good active emg 81-85 and not the passive emg-hz's. Kinda like the buzzsaw too!! Nice review man!
I would like to see you do one of his own personal line of guitars. I'm really curious now. I've only seen Zakk play them online. And sounds good. But he can also rock on a "hello kitty" guitar.... Thanks Justin!
You missed 2 of his Epiphones, he had Custom Plus versions of the camo and bullseye that came with active EMGs vs the normal customs that had the HZ pickups.
It would be great if you could get his moderne model, it's straight up weird yet awesome. I think it's called like the moderne of doom or something, I can't remember, it's whacky!

Austin, what did you use to clean these raw maple fretboards? I just bought a used 2012 black beauty with a maple board and I’m sure it’ll need some cleaning. Thanks in advance!
I don't think I've ever thought that guitar looked good until I saw it shown under the light. Never noticed how intricate the paint and even the blending of the paint is under the bullseye. Kinda want one hahhahaha
It's sad that out of all of Zakk's signature models so few were his Les Pauls. His red bullseye, the Rebel, the Mirror, the Goldie, even the Buzzsaw didn't get a Gibson release.
I think the difference between the "normal" Gibson Bullseye and the more expensive custom was that the cheaper one is true white whereas the Custom is antique white/cream color like the original Bullseye.

This is the only Gibson Les Paul custom I'd purchase with the EMGs
I always love when you make the metal intros then it goes to acoustic 😂😂😂
Such a rad guitar. I think my KM has me sold on Maple necks on LP's

If I’m not mistaken I think the Camo was to honor Dime bag Darrell’s memory.
He had the camo while Dimebag was still alive
Was to honor his dad. Started using his around 1919 eternal era
