I'm a Security Officer Sergeant trying to get into one of the Local Police Departments. Your Videos have been a huge treasure trove of information. Super informative and super helpful. I work with Cops at my site daily, and One of the PD Officers was saying that his department hired a guy that did the bare minimum on all his physical requirements once he entered the Police Academy. The Police Academy eventually contacted that Department and he was let go. I'm trying to be MORE than ready for my next Public Safety Test physically. I did Awesome on the writing, reading, and video testing. Anyhoo, keep doing what you're doing, your vids have been great! Thank you!
+TheFalconLair At the end of the day what makes a good cop are the same things that make good employees anywhere. Effort, common sense, self-supervision... If he didn't put forth the effort at the academy what does that say about how he is going to be when he gets out? I'm glad you like the videos brother. Keep your chin up and follow your dreams. It sounds like you already have the right attitude to succeed in any career path.
So in other words, if they want 1 miles... make it where you can do 2. If they want 50 push ups, get used to 100. If they want a 15 minute run, make it a 12
I just took the WA physical test and the OR test. I'll help give an idea of what you need to do. Roughly 30 sit ups in one minute Roughly 25 push ups 1.5 mile run in roughly 14:00 300 meter sprint in 55 seconds Take those and improve on them just to be safe ^^
+Champagne Levi yep, watch those pd's that only have an obstacle course though. I saw one guy who was jacked pass the obstacle course and get DQed at the academy because nobody told him he had to take a state test at the academy that involved a mile and a half run and sit and reach. Gotta do your homework.
free field training ha, that's terrible. The obstacle course was a little too relaxed IMO. I took the WA test and took the OR obstacle course 15 minutes later, I'm not in great shape but was able to pass easily. Definitely won't prepare me for 3 mile runs in the academy
That's more possible than I thought. Even a skinny dude like me can realistically improve and get to those levels and improve upon them with the dedication.
I've dropped a ton of weight since april 187 lbs to be exact so far. I'm pushing every day to be able to pass this physical test in the last week in April and it's because of you and a few other guys on here that I feel VERY WELL equipped for this situation. Thank you.
A quote from Quark "fission doesn't happen within planetary atmospheres... what? These stupid humans really pollute their own planet." Stop polluting your gut with all that power... look at how advanced and high tech I am. I. Inject. Glaze... Intravenously. It's safer and yields higher electric power.
This is literally the same PT test I took for the USAF, now just to get myself back in shape, thanks for the assist! Take care, stay safe, stay vigilant and have an outstanding day!
I passed the POWER test as part of my interview process with my local department. Now I am getting sworn in on the 17th and going later that day to take the certified test before I start at the academy in Champaign in 2 weeks. I’m not a runner so I’ve been pushing hard to beat the time that I thought was 12:45. But when you showed the form I realized that I had a whole extra minute to finish. I feel great now! Thanks for all the help. I’ve been binge watching your videos like crazy!
If you want to be a police officer in Southern California and pass the Academy... You better go into the Academy being able to run 5 miles at a 9 minute mile pace. You should be able to do 75 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and a minimum of 5 pull-ups... If you can do what I listed going into the Academy... Then you'll have no problems with the physical fitness part of the Academy.
I appreciate you making all the videos. It really means a lot. I'm in my 30's and hope to be able to exceed requirements next year at my local academy.
Great video! I highly recommend functional fitness exercises that don't require special equipment or facilities- body weight stuff like pushups, pullups, burpees, sprints, swimming etc. If it's too easy, then wearing a weight vest 20-30lbs and doing those same body weight exercises
+tactical veterinarian For guys who are on the job already doing body weight exercises with your gear on is a big help. "functional" with 40lbs of gear on is a whole diffrent story.
True, but if a middle aged busy family man (me) who works 70+ hours in a clinic can stay in shape and train along some local PD/SWAT, and in some cases outwork and outrun them, what excuse should those training for academy have?
Yes I know you are! I was just emphasizing to those viewers who make excuses or say they don't have time or special equipment. It's all about mentality and discipline. Keep up the great vids!
Pretty good advice for life tbh: anything is better than nothing. Physical fitness promotes mental fitness and vice versa. And you *do* want to be that cop that never lets the guy get away unless he/she is some kind of freak-of-nature ninja. It must be a huge blow to any LEO's self-esteem and working life to get beat down by a perp.
free field training Trust me to miss the key point: such a situation could end your career if said lunatic perp, like many career criminals, hate cops, they're not going to leave when they've got the opportunity to get away, they're gonna give you a beatdown long after you're rendered defenceless. Btw, I have a cousin in LE in the U.K. but no real direct connection, just all the respect in the world for what you do and why you do it. Just a few weeks into the job working the beat, my cousin saved the life of a bridge jumper by leaning out over and holding onto him for 20 mins til backup arrived, and, throughout, this guy is cussing and screaming "f**k off pig, just lemme go and die, f you!" Etc, etc. And when all was said and done, he wound with a Chief Constable's commendation - a seriously high honour award *and* on visiting the jumper he'd saved in hospital, the guy thanked him (after hurling all that abuse) for saving his life. I bow my head to every single one of you for what is so often a thankless task.
I feel running/cardio is especially important in physical fitness. I run a LOT and have been in multiple physical altercations. In some, the only reason l came out on top was because the dude gassed out before l did. Plus you're less likely to go into shock when the adrenaline dumps into your system.
I work rotating shift as a security officer while being on a diet and doing school full time and working out. I'm lucky to have figured out a good schedule. It just takes time.
thank you so very much for this video. i should already be working out considering that im a security officer in a bad area :/ thanks again and stay safe out there
I'm a firefighter. I ride to and from work on my bike. It gets 1 hour cardio to and from work. Get some dumbbells and use them while watching a movie. Do push-ups/sits-ups while watching TV. Heck, watch a movie and do core training with a theraband. It's always possible.
1. Lift heavy objects(strong people are harder to kill, and more useful in general) 2. Find a Jiu-Jitsu Academy near you and join( you'll get all the cardio you need, plus you'll understand hand2hand combat/ground combat while using less lethal force better than ever)
I have been trying to get into Law Enforcment for a couple years now, and I've had some pretty good interviews. The problem is, I'm only 22 and people tell me I'm too young and don't have enough "life experience". I went on a ride along and the lady officer kept telling me I need to go to school and apply again when I'm older, which is frustrating because I already know what I want to do with my life, so why would I wait? Is there anything I can do about this whole lack of "life experience" thing?
+Champagne Levi Get a real job. I think I talked about this quite a bit here: ua-cam.com/video/TJ1-YjAS34E/v-deo.html many places won't even think about hiring you until you are 23.
My fiancé just got accepted to an academy and well.., he hadn’t run in a while 😕 but he has a month before pre academy to prep then all of pre academy to get into physical shape for the actual academy in 3 months!
I’m not in the greatest of shape I’m 25 years old male 6’5 and around 320LBS , I’m trying to get in shape for the academy but I want to put my work outs around the PT training that they under go like pushups sit ups running etc
I can’t wait till I’m finally done all my school stuff so I can get into the police force with my dad. School means nothing to get in u only need certain stuff and what I do is absolutely useless for me. I can’t wait to try and get into the police force :)))
ZACKEEEBOYY firefighters need to wear heavier gear be able to break through walls carry people maybe eben more than one person. Lift boards off of people or yourself if they fall on you. Cops just have to occasionally chase, jump fences etc. But mostly just conduct traffic stops.
Basically what everyone said lol. But this job is more demanding even after the academy. You can choose to let your self go and become a fat cop or choose to be fit. Now I’m not saying everyone should be fit even though I believe there should be no excuse for anyone to be unfit but its the choice they’ll make but if you want to be fat and can’t hold your ground and get kill. That’s going to be on you because you chose not to be physically fit. There a saying that I was told from a Police Officer who said “fake it until you make it.”
Appreciate this video. Pursuing a Police career and worried about my physical fitness. I ain't a fatass, but I ain't a runner. This helps give me motivation to bust my ass.
I'm scheduled for a written and physical test to get into police academy next month. The physical is 20 pushups/situps a minute, 300 meter sprint in 80 sec, and 1.5 miles in 17 minutes. Working on that at the moment, but do you have any idea what the written test could involve? They said they will give me a study guide beforehand, but that doesn't explain much. Also, I am not very big; I stand 5'5 at like 125-130. Should I try and up my weight as well?
+Sakurei don't worry about upping your weight. Every test is different but most of them have some sort of spacial reasoning test and memory component. Really nothing you can study for.
+mrsean209 pick something to be a trigger. Like with faces don't try to remember hair style as that changes (even on some tests) remember the nose or level of the ears.
Training to the standard does not prepare you for PT. The test is a cake walk when it comes to PT at least here it is. Also just because you're young and in decent shape does not mean you will pass the PT test, I learned this the hard way. Train, train and train.
There is a name for the type of exercises that are good for police training. It involves pushups sit ups squats etc, less emphasis on isolated exercises with dumbells like curls. You told us in a previous video but i cannot find it anymore. What is it called? Like you said, you are training to be a cop, not a body builder.
There wasn't any requirement for entering our academy but to graduate we must do 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, 33 push ups in 1 minute, 40 sit ups in 1 min, and 17" trunk flex. only 6.5 more weeks by the way ;) then hopefully I obtain a badge somewhere.
TIM MAURICE - MAGICIAN / ILLUSIONIST i did my junior police academy for grade 11-12( 16-17 years old) I am not that lean but i did my 1.5 mile run in 11:25 seconds with my asthma problem and did 40 pushup and 40 sit ups both in 1 minute, right now i have the academy starting next week and i am in it😂 i hope i gave you motivation ,have a nice one
I did the physical test to get accepted in the program and I failed the swimming part , I’ve been practicing but nothing has been working I just can’t meet that requirement . I aced everything else nicely and the swimming was horrible
I'm trying to become a police officer, but I'm pretty sure all the signs are pointing to no. I'm 5'0, I have glasses, and I'm 105lbs. My parents are telling me I'm too small, my sister's telling me I can't do it, and I know if I somehow managed to get in anyway, I'd have to work harder than I'm used to. I don't want to settle, I don't want to quit, but should I?
Great video very educational! Is there anything you can tell me about becoming a Texas state trooper education? Like going to school military or being a regular peace officer first?
I’m missing a PCL in my left leg with a torn ACL and meniscus from a football injury that I got my senior year of high school would I possibly need surgery because sometimes when I run I feel my left knee shift and it throw’s me off guard
Answer: I've seen a large city require little more than a heartbeat. I've also seen one tiny town with delusions of grandeur actually require US Army Ranger PFT standards and do bi-weekly PT. I'm not joking. That and other things about that dept. made me seriously suspect that chief had a personality disorder.
Would you recommend straight bodyweight workouts (push-ups, pull-ups, ect.) or weight training? The problem is I don't have a gym membership. Thanks Tommy.
+David DeBergh Most places weight training won't help much at the academy. Being strong and looking strong on the street has its advantages but at the academy you are going to need to do bodyweight workouts and cardio. Calisthenics is big at most police academies.
free field training I already live on my own with my son and wife and I do security. I will tell myself if I don't push myself I die. That usually works.
+Joshua McCoy there is actually a guy who does a whole playlist of that here named Dominic Izzo. Tell him I sent ya.... Izzo Warrior Academy: ua-cam.com/play/PLd512AaP4mrOsZwL6-wxtii7jnla5soOQ.html
Do you know if people with hydrocephalus or otherwise known as cerebral palsy can go into the police academy and try to at least pass it? I have hydrocephalus or otherwise known as cerebral palsy and that's the only reason why I was wondering if people with hydrocephalus or otherwise known as cerebral palsy can go into the police academy and at least try to pass it.
+Robert James Field I really don't know I don't know of anyone with cerebral palsy who is a police officer. Unfortunately like a lot of the medical disqualifiers questions two people have I have to refer you to your doctor to get a professional assessment of whether or not that's possible. Sorry I can't be of more help
I don't know if you can get it for me but I'm joining Alton police department in Illinois. is there anyway you could give me the physical fitness requirements
+Jonathan Carroll Should just be the power test requirements. Unless Alton does something different. I went to a couple female officers from Alton when I started and I don't remember them saying anything about a crazy wall climb or anything.
I watched this after the hands on confrontation with a homeless man in SF and an officer where citzens had to intervene to assist the officer. Link to article: www.ktvu.com/news/ktvu-local-news/237504920-story In a situation like this, do you think use of force policy played a hand, bad judgement, or physical fitness?
Sometimes we just bite off more than we can chew. There is no outward way of telling (other than cauliflower ear) that someone is going to be a good fighter. A homeless guy could be a former army ranger or an ex store clerk and there is no way to tell until you go hands on. We also can't just wait until there are three cops there to engage every situation. That could have started off as a complaint about a vagrant begging for money. The cop might have disregarded his backup so they could deal with a more pressing call because he has dealt with that same hobo many times before and the bum had never been violent in the past. If you do the job long enough it will happen to you. I'm glad there were good people there to help and that nobody got seriously injured in the scuffle.
free field training sorry i meant is it extremely difficult or not as intense as the FBI training. I am asking because i want to join the Greek police special forces (similar to swat.) Ε.Κ.Α.Μ , and i want to start training.
+Owen Bunny I don't even know what that is. But it sounds like it excludes doughnuts and coffee at 3am while yelling at hookups over the loud speaker in the winter. So, I'm out.
the way i do it is to drink a big cup of black coffee when i wake up at 7. and 5 hours later (noon), i have a apple, snack withs alot of fibers to push it through. Then 10 hours after waking up (5pm). i have my big meal that contain 2000 cals. eating like a king bro.
i just don't have time to eat in the day time, school and stuff. With the help of black coffee and a lot of water, i don't feel hungry or tired most of the time. . It;s also called warrior diet (or caveman diet), you can check it out on the youtube.
I hate to butt in here and be the goat. But , I've been in the ghettos and I've seen the gangsta videos and I can tell you that the physical fitness of these people is far superior to most police officers. If I was going to be a peace officer I would make sure that I was in top physical condition at all times. Your personal safety and life depends on it. You can get mad at me if you want to but I'm just telling it like it is and speaking from real life experience.
That has far more to do with age than anything else. Your average new 23 year old cop or 19 year old soldier is in great physical shape too. Just like your average 40 year old criminal looks like crap.
I could easily argue against this. Even the military has acknowledged that the physical fitness of the new recruits is poor. I've been to some military bases right here in Texas and have seen young soldiers that are heavy. Granted, some of them are in outstanding physical condition. But I'm willing to settle this matter. Let me come to your police station and pick out a couple of fat cops and I bet I can do more push ups than they can and I'm almost 60 years old.
you have cheated your audience on this post. this is not only good advice for pd candidates, but sensible advice for everyone. i like the part where you talk about excelling the min requirements for actual pd prospects, but what you say about fitness in general = don't let perfect become the enemy of good. wonderful thinking for the rest of us. i HAVE considered possibly joining the sheriffs reserve in my local county. only to serve the community. i don't care if i get paid or not. what are your thoughts on that, and fitness in general? i'm 55 now, so this may not be practical. i DO like rocketing around on my bmw r1100r, though, so mebbe that factors in.
+skip davis Rreserve programs do lots of good out there. If you don't meet the requirements (some places have a max starting age of 35) there is always civil defense/ESDA. Nearly anyone can join that and be an asset to their community.
quit smoking. you can do a mile walking in 15. here they wanted 6 minutes. I beat a Marine who was smoking. but I did not beat the standard in being black.
"If I can't spend an hour at the gym it's not worth working out" To which I would reply: And yet, if you can't catch all the crooks it's not worth it going on patrol? Why are you in the force bub?
This information is legit. Don't train for the minimum to get in.
Train to pass the graduation minimum.
Build your cardio and endurance too.

I just took the WA physical test and the OR test. I'll help give an idea of what you need to do.
Roughly 30 sit ups in one minute
Roughly 25 push ups
1.5 mile run in roughly 14:00
300 meter sprint in 55 seconds
Take those and improve on them just to be safe ^^
Also, some departments just have an obstacle course. In Oregon they have the ORPAT, you can search it on UA-cam

ZACKEEEBOYY firefighters need to wear heavier gear be able to break through walls carry people maybe eben more than one person. Lift boards off of people or yourself if they fall on you. Cops just have to occasionally chase, jump fences etc. But mostly just conduct traffic stops.
it was rhetorical
+ZACKEEEBOYY You mean you didn't want to engage with the maker of the content and just wanted to be snarky.
Because police don’t have to carry around heavy gear and they spend a lot of time in cars.
Very good advice, thanks man!
Am a hired Game Warden (cadet), waiting for the academy now!!
Appreciate this video. Pursuing a Police career and worried about my physical fitness. I ain't a fatass, but I ain't a runner. This helps give me motivation to bust my ass.
I am pretty overweight. This is the biggest obstacle that I have that’s in my way of becoming a police officer :(
Wow this is easy, once I’m done with my enlistment, I’ll try to get into the academy
I'm also 22, btw.
+Sakurei don't worry about upping your weight. Every test is different but most of them have some sort of spacial reasoning test and memory component. Really nothing you can study for.
I'm struggling with all those damned memory questions on the written. Any pointers, tips or ideas to get me through it?
+mrsean209 pick something to be a trigger. Like with faces don't try to remember hair style as that changes (even on some tests) remember the nose or level of the ears.
Ok. Thanks. I'll have to keep working with the memory segment. It's always great to receive some pointers. That's why I like your channel. :-)
Training to the standard does not prepare you for PT. The test is a cake walk when it comes to PT at least here it is. Also just because you're young and in decent shape does not mean you will pass the PT test, I learned this the hard way. Train, train and train.
+Ben Cunningham there is truth in the there words.
We always stay in shape because we work out on duty
+Engine 5er 👍👍👍
There is a name for the type of exercises that are good for police training. It involves pushups sit ups squats etc, less emphasis on isolated exercises with dumbells like curls. You told us in a previous video but i cannot find it anymore. What is it called? Like you said, you are training to be a cop, not a body builder.
+Adam G calisthenics
Thank you!
+Adam G np
Some of the police departments I’m applying to, give one hour of pay towards working out every shift, which is really nice.
Gotta bring a healthy meal to work....eating fast food and restaurants all the time will pack on the pounds and drain the bill fold.
Great Tips. Thank you.
Great vid man I'm 320 lbs and 6'4 gotta lose weight
+Bloodrampage11 Who among us couldn't stand to lose some weight?
Please stay fit guys, it will save your lives and help you save lives. A cop who isn't mentally and physically fit to do his or her job is dangerous.
+TIM MAURICE - MAGICIAN / ILLUSIONIST then I can say I knew you when!
Should do a Video on requirements for becoming a Supervisor
+Larry Sanders very area dependent.
nice info
+pharraway 🍩☕👍
I'm taking my polygraph, agility test, and written test on Feb 7 at 7:30 Waco Texas!! What do you advise me to ware I'm very nervous.
Great video very educational! Is there anything you can tell me about becoming a Texas state trooper education? Like going to school military or being a regular peace officer first?
+Saintsrow_boss2020 I don't know anything specifically about texas
Saintsrow_boss2020 I think Texas state troopers need an associates degree
Go to the departments website they should tell you the requirements there.
The fastest mile in a half run that I did was 13:12. Unfortunately I added nearly three minutes to my time. I'm goin to cut it the bext time, though.
+Maccabee Luke 22:36 go out and grab that brass ring brother!
Solid gym motivation
+P0NA yep, get out of the basement 101. Lol
Calisthenics is big at most police academies.
free field training 10-4 sir. I need to get motivated to train again. Yay for motivation
+David DeBergh just imagine yourself living in your parents basement forever....
free field training I already live on my own with my son and wife and I do security. I will tell myself if I don't push myself I die. That usually works.
+David DeBergh lol, whatever works for you man.
Good day Sir! What is the age limit to join a police dept in US? Coz Im planning of moving to US and one day join a police force thank you
"Oh no gender equality is not a thing for physical standards"
I am slightly less fit then a guy in most cases, its biology.
Can I transfer from England to America? Or do I have to be American
+James Beaver in most places you have to be a US citizen first. I think new york city may be taking permanent aliens.
can you do a video on police training martial arts off duty
Good info!
+alwaysrockn2009 glad to help
If I can already meet and surpass the physical standards I find online what should I focus on?
can you comment the link for the FBI study guide?
+okie cowboy sorry about that I fixed it now. www.fbijobs.gov/career-paths/special-agents
I’m in Illinois!
Awesome Thanks
Thank you
+Nicole Thomas-williams it is my pleasure Nicole.
My daughter wanted to go on a ride along with the local police department here but you have to be 18+. I now want to go on a ride along. Should I?
+Mary Norha sure, why not?
What can I do if I have bad vision will I be able to use glasses if I'm a cop
+Elijah Grisanti yeah, you can wear glasses.
Sorry. What I meant was is being a type 2 diabetic a disqualification?
Amazing video ⚫️🔵⚫️ Keep it up !!
+Explorer Allie Thanks! I like the new avatar Allie.
free field training thank you 😊 made it myself ⚫️🔵⚫️
+Explorer Allie 🍩☕👍
The fitness requirement is usually being able to eat a 6 pack of donuts in 5 minutes
HereComeTheRooster that seems to be the case for eight years after the first hire.
Do cop patrol with partner or that mostly for city department ?
+Jake cop patrol wit partner when need for stuffs or danger. Main in city. Sometimes country if day doing hard thing. (lol, I couldn't resist)
Link to PFT guide not in description
+Splixxfire sorry about that I fixed it now...www.fbijobs.gov/career-paths/special-agents
also CPD has power test Sunday!
+Splixxfire Good luck!
What do you do in the force
+Seth Rippee I take probationary officers who are fresh out of the academy and teach them how to be cops.
so does the channel name free 'field training' come from the fact of you being a 'field training' officer?
+TIM MAURICE - MAGICIAN / ILLUSIONIST wow! I never thought of it that way. Thanks tim. I must have done that subconsciously. Lol
just makes it that much cooler when you realize it :)
+TIM MAURICE - MAGICIAN / ILLUSIONIST lop
Should i focus more on cardio?
+Nelson rodriguez If you can pass the other aspects then yes. Almost all academies are running heavy.
What about pushups they don't test you on that
I have PT in two weeks...I hope I pass
I know every department is different but on average how long can you have your hair.
+Nelson rodriguez facial hair is half an inch. The scalp must be above the collar
Where are you from in IL?
+Harrison L nestled between the South side of Chicago and Gary Indiana.
free field training wow I've been around that area my grandparents are from Hammond IN. That place went to shit
+Harrison L Welcome to my life.
the requirement, 1.5 in 12 minutes. In the academy, 3-5 miles.
I watched this after the hands on confrontation with a homeless man in SF and an officer where citzens had to intervene to assist the officer.

In a situation like this, do you think use of force policy played a hand, bad judgement, or physical fitness?
+P0NA I can't get the link to work on my phone.
I'm glad there were good people there to help and that nobody got seriously injured in the scuffle.
free field training Thank you for the insight on this. I never saw if that way at all, really good stuff to keep in mind going forward.
what about swat training ?
+MR .X what about it?
free field training sorry i meant is it extremely difficult or not as intense as the FBI training. I am asking because i want to join the Greek police special forces (similar to swat.) Ε.Κ.Α.Μ , and i want to start training.
+MR .X I've never been to Quantico for the Fbi Academy. But, when I did Swat school it was very difficult, both physically and mentally.
free field training thanks a lot for replying and thank you for your time.
+MR .X it is my immense pleasure
I feel like Physical fitness is the easiest part
+ARMYMP It certainly should be.
intermittent fast could be a good diet plan for police.
+Owen Bunny that sounds like it take lots of willpower
i just don't have time to eat in the day time, school and stuff.
Heck, in my state you can get hired and turn into a blob after your hired. Lowered expectations I guess ?
quit smoking. you can do a mile walking in 15. here they wanted 6 minutes. I beat a Marine who was smoking. but I did not beat the standard in being black.
+websuspect Yeah, the 90's were rough on some people
it was rough but things sometimes work out for the better.
+websuspect as long as you re happy with the outcome and paying the bills that is what matters.
Do you consider having a fatty liver would be a problem?
+GhostCrisp86 I haven't the foggiest idea.
"If I can't spend an hour at the gym it's not worth working out"
To which I would reply: And yet, if you can't catch all the crooks it's not worth it going on patrol? Why are you in the force bub?
+Nøderak lots of them out there though.
I’m 5.77” and 240lbs. Guess I’ll never make it
Nah its always possible. Always.
Shit. Bring it on. I'm damn near 40 but I can keep it with the 20 somethings and put them to shame. Thank heavens for good genetics.
My sea cadets pt test is harder than this
cool
+Seth Rippee 🍩☕😀
