I don't know what happened to the American kaiju movies. Godzilla (2014) had a very serious atmosphere surrounding the monsters and showed the aftermath of what such a creature was capable of. It felt grounded enough to be believable. Not to forget it having fantastic cinematography and incredible sound design. I just don't understand why they shifted the tone from Godzilla (2014) to, well, this cookie cutter ADHD explosion. It couldn't just be the money though

I think this is the current equivalent of the Michael Bay Transformers movies. Some people just want to see more of what they enjoy, while others will rightfully criticize what's wrong with it. Neither side is wrong or right about it. There's always going to be an audience who are going to see and support Kaiju movies like this in the theater.
I'm with you...and the thing is I think even hard-core fans would benefit from what I'm saying they should expect. There's no reason these movies can't have entertaining characters

Godzilla Minus One and The New Empire are on the complete opposite end of extremes, and I’m just sitting here wanting something that has a mix of both. Great characters and writing, but also plenty of kickass action. I don’t know why Hollywood can’t get it right
The problem isn't that they can't get it right, but that they know they don't need to. The G fandom has made it clear that they don't care about writing and demand dumbed down movies with nothing but action fights and pretty colors.
There's no reason for them to improve when the bare minimum is all that's needed to satisfy the fans.

Such a fun movie. Seeing Godzilla Mothra and Kong together for the first time in Kaiju history fighting skar king and shimo is just awesome. Seeing how the monsters interact with each other is so fun to watch. Gave me war of the Gargantuans/son of Godzilla vibes. This is definitely a showa era movie from the mid 60s and that's fun
Godzilla and Mothra have been in the same movie before. In King Of The Monsters, it had Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. I absolutely loved King Of The Monsters and I 💯 prefer Rodan and King Ghidorah over kong.
I wanted more Godzilla screen time and humenize him like Kong, but maybe in the next movie.
Dude, that doesn’t make the movie good. You can have Batman and Superman in the same movie together for the first time along with Wonder Woman to fight Doomsday and the movie would still suck.
The part where the spy returns to pride rock, the scar king should have sang ' be prepared ' would have made the movie 10/ 10

This was a VERY typical American monster action movie, if you are going into this movie expecting any more than that you are going to be disappointed and I think this is something we all expected to happen anyway, I don’t know why people are making a big deal about it when they knew exactly what they were going into!

The fight scenes were to short, and I'm tired of seeing Godzilla never having in struggle to overcome while Kong goes through hell in every movie while Godzilla walks through flowers

I adored Godzilla X Kong, but Mike isn’t wrong on alot of the stuff he says. It’s just that stuff doesn’t really matter to me personally. When you get a sorta showa Godzilla/Kong throwback, it makes me feel like a kid again and it’s great taking my kid to see big monster hit other big monster lol
I just wish they would go back to creating horror with these monsters, fuck the love story let's have Kong a horror.
This movie is loud, dumb, silly and colorful. All in a good awesome way!! This film is NOT for everybody! If you are looking for Godzilla Minus One plot, story and character development, you're not getting it. What you are getting is a monster mash tag team romp that will satisfy people looking to have a two hour amusement park ride. People should already know what they are walking into when you watch the trailer and TV spots of the film. After all, the people that walk out the film with a smile on their face are the winners!! Either way fans of both genre wins both Minus One and Godzilla X Kong. If you dislike it, that's fine, cannot please everyone, if you enjoyed it (coming from the majority of the audiences) then you are the real winners!

There are alot of people who have this notion that they need to go see every movie that comes out. When it comes to Godzilla movies, alot of people really just need to stay away from them. They're not Shakespeare, they're not trying to be, aside from 3 movies tops 97% of them aren't trying to be anything more than a dumb, entertaining, monster fight movie.
Some people just can't get past that not everything is made for everyone and that its OK..I've never seen one frame of those fucking hobbit movies outside of trailers that I was either forced to watch or were on television and its OK, I don't want them to try and make hobbit movies that appeal to me.
There are worse movies in the Toho movies that are far worse than anything Legendary has done with the Monsterverse.

Idk man I got what I wanted out of it. Sure, the script was incredibly dumb, could have taken out about 75% of anything having humans but when this movie is trying to cook, it cooks. I'd give it a 6.8 outta 10... It's all about setting your expectations properly before going in.
Well you only gave it a point or so higher than I did. And I had ZERO expectations going in. I think it should be about expecting them to make a better film with all the resources at their disposal. Accepting less when it'd be so easy to do more doesn't make sense to me.

Nobody talks about how good the 2014 Godzilla was. The tone, the mysterious cinematography, the way they use Godzilla sparingly, the way the direction shows his size, even the characters weren’t dumb as shit in that one. The recent monster verse movies are cool but they’re so goofy and over the top. Disappointing stuff

Apparently this film had the lowest budget out of all the Monsterverse films which explains why it comes off like a cheaply produced cash-grab.
Eh. These are those types of Movies where I'm perfectly fine with the same thing. I want a Godzilla Movie where Giant, Cool looking Monsters Fight and Kill each other. That's all I want. Hell, I want more of it during! 😆
I fell out of the _Transformers_ and _The Fast and The Furious_ Movies a *looong* time ago because they got ridiculous and the *exact* same... But for Godzilla (and Kong), that works. That's the point of Godzilla Movies, for them to be Awesome, yet mindlessly Destructive! I don't want an actual Script or Story for these Movies. A little extra Lore for Godzilla and Kong, their Monsters and Worlds are fine, But I just want to see them Fight and Destroy shit. Same works here - in my opinion. 🙂
But, for possible new stuff... Two things I think they should do for future Godzilla, Kong, Monsterverse Movies...
Either *completely* get rid of the Human Characters; other than possibly Nobody/No-Name Victims. We're *all* here for the Kickass Monsters beating the shit outta each other... *That's* it! We don't give a crap about the Humans and their lives/problems in these Movies!
Or... Make Jason Statham the Protagonist/Lead. Him/His Character made the Meg Movies Entertaining, because him/his *Character* was Entertaining! So a Godzilla and/or Kong Movie with him could be fun; where the Human Character's are actually as Entertaining as the Monsters!

I don't understand why people are mad about the movie for being dumb, it was a Godzilla homage to the showa era and you can literally check them out here in YT and see for yourself how dumb the showa era Godzilla and yet so much fun.
Maybe people are mad because it was dumb and bad movie and a waste of time? It’s not that hard to figure out, it’s just a bad movie and it being a homage to Shōwa era does not make it ok and is the problem when people point out they are copying and pasting from old Toho films instead of sticking with G14’s identity and set up. This is not Shōwa era and should not be trying to pay homage to it to the point that it’s just copying and pasting especially when most of them were not very good or aged well. This is Legendary Godzilla, it had its own identity, world building, set up, idea, style and knew what it’s trying to be. G14 had a serious, dark apocalyptic tone and because that’s what Legendary Godzilla started off as it should stick with that identity. Not keep going with this radical shift in tone and throwing stupid random ideas that it makes no sense or fits in to this universe. At this point the current direction the monsterverse is going in os stupid and full of bad and cringe ideas, the writing is cringe, the dialogue is really bad and this is really going to fan faction territory of bad writing. No movie should ever heavily rely on fan service like what’s going on in the current monsterverse, because it’s cringe and eye rolling and I don’t know how people keep enjoying these clearly bad movies and I’m sick of it. Everyone’s standards is this badly low that they’ll just eat up this boring slop that keeps being thrown into the script because the writers were sent a very bad message from the audience that they writers don’t have to try because they know everyone will just eat it up and not ever criticize it for making bad movies.

By your logic, basketball fans have lower standards in terms of entertainment, compared to chess fans. If it was a bad movie, the ratings from critics and audience would've been the same, and when I say audience, I meant people who watched it from around the world.

For once I actually agree with the critics that it’s not a very good movie and it got the score it deserves and Imo it should have been much lower. We really need to get out of this mindset of just because critics hate a movie must mean it’s actually good. What is Negro Society good now because critics hate it that too? At the end of the day a shit movie is still a shit movie regardless of what critics think. Look at a movie with an objective pair of lenses.
Taking into account that there will be a continuation, and if we look at the comics and novels that are canon, perhaps we have a beautiful story, BUT this story is not about or for humans (this is better worked on in series like the animation of Skull Island and Monarch legacy of monsters), and yes about the monsters, it's as if the monsters were the protagonists, antagonists, etc. Being humans, narrators not only of the fights but also of the lore of this universe, which by the way, has a lot of potential if they work on a film just about the monster war, how it happened, when, where, how it ends and what it has in store. in relation to the monsters in the present and finally, this film promised exactly what the trailers showed, for those who know the Godzilla franchise (and other monsters/giants too) will see this film as a child's dream coming true (it was showa , heisei, Millennium of ideas), I bet Toho had a lot of good memories of the old films.
And please, this comparison with minus one is ridiculous, completely different proposals, different paths, different focuses, and they both work and are good at that, even the director of minus one loved this film and I think it's good, even with zilla from 98 in which he didn't think it was as bad as people said, so why don't you open your bubble a little and have fun? I think it's possible to live with these two versions in hand, a wonderful feast for those who like monster films, especially for the fans, and I like that the first reviews that came out, the negative ones, although I have disagreements, they at least understand the proposal for this film and you know what it delivered, so much so that they apparently enjoyed the monster scenes and the story about them even though they didn't enjoy the film in general

Thank you so much for this review. All the other youtubers I follow are being weirdly nice to this. Like, what else did you expect? Ummmm, I love dumb fun movies, but this isn't fun at all. My IMDb review echoes so many of your points:
I keep coming back to these movies. Over and over. I love monster movies and can enjoy dumb-fun action. I'm the exact target audience. How do they continue to fail? Aside from Godzilla (2014), they range from mediocre to terrible. And GxK is no different.
I know most reviews will compare this to Godzilla Minus One. But I have to. Every single Godzilla shot from Minus One is better than every single shot of him in GxK. Every single action scene in Minus One is better than every single one in GxK. Better story, characters, dialogue, emotional investment. Everything. Minus One is better in every way.
The worst thing I can say about GxK is... I was so bored. And I didn't care about anything that was happening. Zero investment. This is partly because it doesn't really have a story. Stuff just happens. Halfway through, I still didn't know what the story was about, what conflict we might be heading to, any kind of build up of a threat.
They continue with another useless human plot, completely formulaic and bland. One of the only positives is a highly talented cast. They're just not given anything to work with. Rebecca Hall is the only one who gets to show her talent.
Even worse is the 50+ comedic attempts. I laughed twice. The nearly sold out crowd laughed a few times. The rest made me cringe. They're like dad jokes. The entirety of the human story is basically a kids movie.
What about the titans? They rarely show the scale of these monsters. Most of the time it's from the perspective of the monsters, not the humans. So they always look like they're 6 feet tall, with everything around just smaller.
Even the movements are so fast like humans are fighting. When they fall, they fall in a second. No ground-shaking impact. It feels so fake and nowhere close to epic. I'm not anti-CGI, but the big action scenes are hectic gibberish.
I give up. It shouldn't be this difficult. I don't even need it to be a "good" movie. Just entertaining with good action. Instead I get forgettable and dumb.

Thank you SO MUCH for writing this comment. A lot nicer than I could've put it myself.. 😅 It's clear as day to see. One film is subjectively, esthetically, and artistically superior in every way. It's not about measuring straws. It's about which FILM was ultimately better. Which REPRESENTS The King of the Monsters better. It doesn't take much speculation to see. I saw Minus One 3x in theaters, and the third time, I was actually so PROUD of how far Godzilla has come. I actually was fighting back tears because I felt like Godzilla was FINALLY getting the respect and praise he so rightly deserved after been a huge fan since I was 10. About 2003 when Destroy All Monsters Melee was a popular fighter on Gamecube. I also knew that Toho would be the ONLY* creators to deliver that punch. It had to be the REAL Godzilla. Took a look at the title for the new monsterverse flick and immediately backed out! Saw fire-crotch Lanky Kong was the main villain.. 😬😬😬😬🙄🙄 "It's a no from me.." 💅🏻 💅🏻 Rip-off Rampage monsters don't belong in the same movie as Godzilla. This is also a KONG*** movie. It's not a Godzilla movie. That's why they're supposed to have their own separate films.. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

I honestly wasn’t expecting you to review this movie. Usually you and I’s opinions are relatively on the same page, but definitely not this time.
Now to be clear some of the stuff you’re saying about this movie isn’t necessarily wrong, but I think a lot of the critiques are very nitpicky for the most part. Especially given the type of movie you’re reviewing.
I definitely don’t think the CGI/special effects are nearly as bad as you’re implying. In fact I thought most of special effects were done pretty well.
As for the characters yeah they’re not going to impress you if the other MV films haven’t. They’re not the most interesting characters, but they serve their purpose. The narrative is clearly focused on the monsters and the story we do see revolving around them is done well in my opinion.
I think comparing this film to Minus One is done in bad faith. These two films are clearly trying to pay tribute to two very different aspects of the franchise’s legacy. If you went into this film with Minus One expectations then you only sabotaged your own experience. Not the directors or the rest of the team. I don’t think Takashi Yamazaki would approve of his work being used to discredit other works in the franchise.
Look, I still love you man. I still really love your content and look forward to watching more reviews, but I definitely couldn’t disagree with you more on this one.

I've been watching godzilla movies since I was a kid. To me, seeing godzilla in this way, and the monsters from the Japanese movies being exposed in big budget movies, it's just incredible.
I do see what you are saying, though. After a while, they do all become the same movie.
They need to surprise us with the next one, if there ever will be. As little as changing the tone and/or lighting.

I love these movies, but they're not everyone's Cup Of Joe.(so to speak) Going to watch this at the theatre this Tuesday.
Thought it was good I could’ve done with the people parts .. and winguard didn’t use Godzilla at all .. but it was fun and that’s what you want in a summer movie if ya want a great g movie see minus one the director blew it but it was still fun and I love Kong so I loved every time he was on screen
It could have been longer that's my only problem with the film.

Acho engraçada essa comparação do minus one com o Godzilla americano, porque parece que as pessoas estão enchendo esses filmes como se Hollywood tivesse abandonado tudo que o Godzilla era antes, enquanto o Toho já fez isso, tipo, ser herói, anti-herói, vilão, vítima, Godzilla já foi tudo isso nos filmes japoneses, desde a era Showa, Hensei, Millenium, curtas recentes, e o fato de Toho estar gostando e até ter respeito total pelo Monsterverse só torna essa situação ainda mais engraçada, pois ambos legendary (americanos) e Toho (japoneses), estão fazendo a mesma coisa atualmente, revivendo o passado com a tecnologia atual, a única diferença é que os americanos estão revivendo a era showa hensei Millenium etc., enquanto os japoneses estão revivendo os filmes solo, sério e pesado que se você comparar com toda a franquia é composta por 5 filmes ou mais, sei que o roteiro e os humanos (alguns pelo menos) dos filmes recentes do monsterverse são muito fracos, mas isso não faz do filme uma porcaria (pelo menos não para mim ), principalmente GvK em que a proposta, o foco daquele filme era o óbvio do título, e eles entregaram, o que virá nesse próximo filme pode não ter um tom sério como o de 2014 ou como o minus one, mas talvez para a história dos monstros, na perspectiva do Kong, possa ser bem pesada, quer dizer, você já viu a origem desse Kong? É triste cara, então parem gente, que isso tá feio já, vcs precisam começar a aprender a ter gosto da franquia geral do Godzilla, não tenho problema nenhum com preferências, mas tratar filmes insanos ou galhofas como se não servissem de nada, e só filmes como minus one presta, é pura tolisse, vcs tem que aprender a saber o que procura e entender que certos filmes não são para vcs. (detalhe, não estou dizendo que menos um é ruim, muito pelo contrário, é digno de Oscar, mas sabe, parece que subiu muito na cabeça das pessoas)
As someone who grew up watching old showa movies with my grandfather i loved it. Me and my grandpa connected through movies and this honestly made me feel like i was with him again watching his favorite giant lizard. Loved it. Plus its better than whatever marvel is doing now.

I do feel you at certains points. But the same could be said with the scream franchise and I hate saying that but there is a truth to that.
Not at all though....Scream is script and character driven. It's not just the same cgi monsters fighting with nothing interesting surrounding them
The first Godzilla was solid & Kong was alright. The rest have been terrible stories but solid monster mashes. Growing up with Godzilla, I've seen it all & boy was a lot of that s**t weird but I loved it all. I'm down for just a good monster movie & it looks just like that & nothing more. ALLLLL that said, would I love a good story AND good monster fights, of course! Godzilla is my one guilty pleasure where I just want my Godzilla to be a GOD! In regards to Halloween, DON'T f**k that s**t up!

Mike I think the reason people keep seeing these movies is because it's simply giant monsters on a giant screen. The music that accompanies the monsters is always great. The spectacle, as you said. Most people don't even expect the story to be good. Just gimme big meaty monsters slapping their meat together.

misconception every makes , the title suppose says Godzilla x Kong, the correct way to read it is Godzilla Kong so the x is silent because putting Godzilla and Kong doesn’t make sense because doesn’t look good same with a coma, and a indentation also x is used in many things like shoe company or a game or tv crossover so if you think sounds stupid then just read as Godzilla kong as there are teaming up to fight.

It really was real generic bullshit. The only thing of value in this movie is kong building a relationship. This movies are turning into what happens to the avengers. Same story different bad guys. Anti hero bs. And plot armored human characters
