Among his many talents, Prince was one of the best Drum programmers ever. There are people to this day trying to emulate what he did in the 80s. He was at least in the top ten. Which is part of the reason DJ's were big fans of his and Prince was one of the influences on the inception of "House Music" genre and later "techno music". Just listen to the album "1999" and you can see why:
Preach!! Great musician/producer he was
Can u add of your own....... I'd luv to that with a baseline
That is absolutely correct I was spinning industrial, early house and early techno in the late 80s and we were continually overdubbing baselines and parts from several Prince songs which included controversy, A Love Bizarre with Sheila E, and of course EroticCity and When Doves Cry… Doves cry didn’t have much of a bass track but the percussion was insane and it worked beautifully with house and techno.
He was probably the 1st person to tune the bass drum to the key of the song
Facts💯
That flanged snare is crazyyyy! OMG. Gave me life
This is the type of thing that makes me in awe of musicians. The ability to pick up on things musically in Prince's music and recreate it. Much respect to the creator of this video. I can see why Prince rarely slept. The music was probably always calling out to him.
but seriously i remember when this song was launched in the UK,I was like what's this,it's totally different to anything else i've ever heard before. It was and still is an amazing song
SP330Y That's how I felt here in the US. There was nothing else like it on radio stations- both Black and White. It stood apart from everything else at the time...it still does.
He loved the colour purple, his bike, his movie, his clothes ,house, everything was purple.I think the colour is very powerful and even samuel l jackson loves it,its in lots of his movies, and morgan freeman always gets the word red in lots of his movies, but think of purple and you immediately think of Prince
Prince, played a bass line in the original song but decided to take it out. Notice the emphasis is in the kick drum to give it that bottom. He also did the same thing in the song Kiss which was originally inteded for the group Mazarati.
My band covers this song on acoustic like Shaman's Harvest and that explains why I couldn't find a bass part on the original song to use as a basis for our version!
Yep. Another dance type song that didn't have a bass line, was Madonna's song "Frozen".
@@kaleoy7584 ig it's kind of dancey, not really your traditional dance style more intelligent body music type stuff
Mannn I love that rimshot sound!! Yes, I think I remember that sound on Dreams records.
Nasty!!!! Making me miss Prince all over again bro.
I admire your musical confidence!!!
Awesome video. I love the sound of the Linn Machine. I'm a drummer and I always refer to that sound as "Prince Drums".
THey are!
This is so dope to see u throw this together! Great vid!
Nice work....The mystery has been solved.. I always wondered about Prince's drum method. #respect
Love your videos, and great to see such passion for sounds and the "science" of arranging them together.
This is amazing
I've always thought that tuned down rim shot on Let's Go Crazy was a ping pong ball. Prince played a lot of ping pong.
I spoke someone yesterday who used to call it 'the ping pong ball sound', so you may be onto something ;)
That tuned down rim shot though... it was the first thing I loved about Prince, and it's one of the most defining sounds that set his music apart
@Tony I don't know which is funnier. That story or the "-bass in his face" story.
Great job! I loved it! But I’ve heard once that Prince tried to put a bass line on it, actually, Dr. Fink asked him why. Prince answered: "I tried, but it didn't work."
It has been said that he recycled the baseline in another song. 17 days.
This was amazing. You deserve much more views. Very educational. I subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
Housequake beat???????
Man did I ever want to hear that synth solo at the end replayed. I can play most of it but towards the end I can't hear what he's playing. I spoke with Matt Fink and he modified for live. It's a great solo.
U spoke to Matt you said???
Thanks for leaving a dope comment on my video, Cori Jacobs
The LM-1 with the downtuned rimshots and all can also be heard on "1999" and on other releases from the parent album like "Let's pretend we're married", "Little red corvette" and "Automatic"
But he also used it post-Purple rain as it can be most clearly heard on "Raspberry beret", "America" and "U got the look"
If you look up the music videos of the "1999" era, take a good look at whenever Bobby Z. is shown, next to the Hi-hat is the LM-1 clearly visible. Look up live footage and you can see and hear Bobby, using the Simmons Synth drumkit to work with the LM-1, doing cymbal crashes and embellashing the beats with extra hits on the snare or the toms.
I recreated this recently. The keyboard sound is the DX7 Koto patch
Did you use presets from the TAL?
More from Prince, please!!! Your videos are amazing!
REST IN PEACE PRINCE THE LEGEND 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Really enjoyed this - many thanks! How about tackling 'Sexuality' off Controversy? Some truly extraordinary sounds on that one!
Prince sound came from the Linn LM-1 Drum Computer not the Linndrum, they are different machines, yes both made by Roger Linn. The Akai MPC was a designed by Roger Linn, he sold Linn electronics to Akai but still continue his work under Akai brand for a few years, the MPC was developed based on a model called Linn MidiStudio, that model apparently never came out to production but was the base for the MPC later.
Prince performed the track himself. Not with The Revolution. Just saying. Good job of remaking the track👍👍
@Tony the engineer who recorded and mixed it. 🤣🤣🤣
Man that was FANTASTIC.
U were ABSOLUTELY right, there was a loosening of his music.
He tracked at least 30 versions of Doves and he felt the bass didn't fit.. he struggled with it
Great video.
Actually, the song was recorded with a bass line.
Prince removed the bass line during the mix.
Correct!
Correct!!
"Ain't nobody gonna believe I do this."
Yes he removed prince play lead synths with oberheim obxa
Not from what I heard. I heard that Prince didn't even realize he left out the bass. He started adding bass, then realized the bass was too much, and left it out.
Man you make this look so easy - to a layman like me that is so impressive
You are amazing man! Keep doing what your doing. Hopefully you can make this your full time career soon! You should make some classic UK garage or DnB tracks. Like Craig David or Goldie. Bless up
How about Soul II Soul- Back to Life ?
Great channel by the way.
Yeah I would like to see that too
Make "Hypnotize" by Biggie Smalls please
Just sample the breakdown from Herb Alpert's "Rise" and double the bassline on a synth bass.
Mint !!! Love how you lay it all down so quick!!!! You know ye stuff dude. Keep the vids coming 👊🏻👊🏻
This remake is way off the mark. but not in a bad way. what's important is understanding the time period and what was being expressed through this beat. Prince was young at this time looking to appeal to the 18-24 age bracket. it was a hip hop track. all the mix DJs used this concept when doing party remixes. it's a DJ groove which why there's no bassline. this remake is distinctly different from the original. if this was done back in that time, many people would mistake it for a remix of the midnight star hit "no parking on the dance floor". the nuances of the meter mean a lot when programming those beats. the down and back beats were altered just enough for listeners to notice when doing certain dance moves. it's a dance party groove. the impact of the reverb was very important also. there's a lot missing in this remake. but as I said, not in a bad way. Dillio you are phenomenal at what you do. with the right amount of research and dedication I could see you taking tracks like this to even another level. wish I could work on these types of tracks with you. man you can be the next dr dre.
Man, I am gonna have to get me one of those drum machines.
Awesome video, I do love seeing these sort of... dismantling, for lack of a better word, of songs.
I was in the states when this tune got released, he took the the Thompson twins of the top spot both sides of the pond. And he produced it with no computers, thus sampling etc, and I wasnt a big prince fan! However this was a big Big BIG TUNE!
You did a great job, Stay encouraging yourself to get into music work mode after your day job. You're doing worthwhile work that the interweb world needs! :) (y) O(+> 4ever
Dillio that is Awesome!
omg dude ive been trying to figure out what the hell that rim shot sound was for years..thaaaaaank you how can i buy kymikals
It would be nice if you released a full instrumental for the remakes that you do, I enjoy listening to them, especially this one
Amsterdam is proud of you . Keep it up.
Hilarious, i remember for the life of me trying to figure out that same odd sound Prince always used. I made a Track called "Little Blue Chevette" in 2009 utilizing the LinnDrum as well. There were so many songs in the 80s that used it. From Phil Collins to Flashdance, but no one really made it their own like Prince did in that era. Anyways, love your Remakes. Great job. and Prince was huge for me as a kid in the 80s. Rest In Purple, dearly beloved
keep killing it bro
Cool track💣💣💣.
I'm recreating the beat on my TR-8, it's actually 126.4 bpm lol.... Took me a minute to get it to track
i used a similar method, but layered the keys a bit to try to get a different tone. this definitely is a fun song to work with
keep it up
How'd you get the 1st Juno sound? I have a Juno emulator but I can't seem to work the swithes so it has that plucky sound.
Wassup dillio dope beat remakin game!
There’s still the chromatic melody on the “don’t make me chase you, even doves have pride” part.
true
what did baby face use on don't be cruel and keyboards was baby face using
good job in recreating a classic.
Good Stuff, thank you. Love your notes on drum sounds.
Only thing missing was fat gated reverb on the snare....not standard reverb....his drums were actually pretty dry, but in the amount of time you spent on this, im not gonna knock you for it. Great work...saw the talkbox cover, was dope af too....
Excellent tutorial well done.
make some dilla madlib knxledge 9th etc please and thank you
Yess!! Those are some of my favorite producers! I'd love to hear some Dilla, Madlib, Oddisee and 9th Wonder too!
Can you do some more prince or dream inspired beats that would great! You got great vids!
this is fire
Good job Dillio... Really good!!! :D
Where did you get the drum samples 😢😭😫
ADD a flanger to the out put.. He used a Boss flanger pedal..
Dude you are VERY talented but...it's well known that there was no "Prince Team".
The team was...Prince.
Mr. Purple met with Mo Ostin at Warner Bros after all of the main tracks for PURPLE RAIN were finished...and Mo said oddly enough "I don't hear a single". Prince went back into the studio...and in 16 hours HE wrote and recorded ALONE the song WHEN DOVES CRY...not "DOVES CRY" as so many people mistakenly call it.
In the process of making this track, he DID lay down a bass part. The story is that during mixing the next day...Jill Jones just kind of reached over to the mixing board and MUTED the bass line. It was only one channel and very easy to just turn it off by punching the MUTE button on that track. Prince loved how that suddenly sounded and kept it that way. Thank you, Ms. Jones.
But in other words, the entire thing was done...by one person and in about 16 hours tops. His name was Prince Rogers Nelson. Nobody else plays on the track. All instruments were played by him. All vocals were done by him. All guitar parts including the iconic opening lines. Him. Him. And Him.
There are NO OTHER MUSICIANS of any kind on this track. No other producers. No team. No nothing except the genius. WDC was made entirely by Prince. That's it. That IS why he is considered a genius. He didn't need what Beyonce and Kanye and Taylor all desperately must have: a team of 14 writers and producers and players.
Prince WAS the team. He made a masterpiece by himself. And that is...that.
Hey Arlin Godwin OFFICIAL, I appreciate you sharing some insight on the track!
Hey man---yeah I've read just about every book on Prince ever written---most of them many times. I enjoy the backstories behind the writing and recording of the tracks and this one about WHEN DOVES CRY is a famous one. The record was mostly done...all the other tracks were there...but for whatever reasons (Mo Austin usually gets credit for asking Prince for another track) Prince suddenly went back into recording mode one more time and quickly created this incredible track. One of the greatest of his career...and according to everything I've ever read he did it entirely alone. Most of the movie was cut at this time and finished...and in fact if you watch the film you'll notice that When Doves Cry is heard in the background of a montage of shots after the Kid has lost Apolonia to Morris...it was easier at that point in production to incorporate the new track in this way using it as background for a collection of shots.
The NEXT DAY after it was recorded there were folks around including Jill who supposedly just as a taunt or joke reached over and muted the bass track. Prince loved it and kept it that way...which caused a lot of trouble back at Warner Bros because they just couldn't imagine putting it out like that. But we all know what happened! A classic was born.
The sound was used in several ready for the world songs it's called the knock knock sound I think
Thats right
Nice discussion and parts, but it would be nice if you used the direct audio when you're playing the music.. listening to it in a mic over speakers is unpleasant (or if you have direct sound there's not enough of it)
do you prefer Maschine over MPC?
you are amazing
What type of Reverb Prince Used??? Plate , Large .... ???
He used gated reverb, specifically the AMS' Nonlinear reverb.
Could you do a remake of 'If I was your girlfriend' by Prince?
The first version Prince made was just him on the tuba and a washboard. These tapes were stolen by his bass player back then, and he decided to get his revenge by muting the bass in a new version. That is the version that ended up on Purple Rain.
Lol
I love you. Can we please get married right now? Think it over. Meanwhile, thanks for this!
Nice vid... but how 'bout the damn *guitar solo* ?? and those string arpeggios, huh ?
Hermanovitz right
Dang man please dont stop making these!!! Could you do dance with somebody by whitney houston or man enough for me by toni braxton!? Or little red corvette by prince or kid cudi dat new new? Just a bunch of suggestions man ur beasting. Maybe even Better by banks? Or one dance by drake? Do em all man please! I'd share every last one. And definitely purchasing the sound bank
super cool. love the video. subbed.
Hey Dill! Can u also do some of the cheiron produced songs? Larger Than Life- BSB? Baby One More Time? Or some New Jack Swing?
Where'd you find the sounds if you don't mind me asking?
super master
OMG That’s Cool 😎
glad you came by
Good work... but the chords to "When Doves Cry" on piano aren't quite right. I'm not dissing you... but I have played with Prince and I play all the instruments as well.
Thanks. Playing with prince must of been an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing.
Stop Lying, Nicca. when did you play with Prince?
swifftouch last night in his damn dreams
Probably related to Stokley.
good job
There was a bassline. It was muted.
PRINCE FLANGE USAGE ON THIS RACK ACTUALLY IS USE ON 3 DIFFERENT SOUNDS. THE LYNN DRUM, HIGHHAT AND ALSO A LASER SOUND. I HATE IT THAT THIS SONG IS THE ONLY SONG LEAST PERFORMED LIVE BECAUSE IF HOW HARD IT WAS TO REPRODUCE THIS LIVE WITHOUT JUST RUNNING THE BACKING TRACK TO THE RELEASED LP VERSION. SOUNDMEN JUST COULD NOT GET IT ALL RIGHT DURING THE PURPLE RAIN TOUR AND IT WAS BELIEVED THAT HE WAS LIVID ABOUT IT. BUT THATS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU ARE TOO FAR AHEAD OF YOU TIME!! I HAVE EVEN SPENT YEARS FINDING THE LIVE FOOTAGE AND COMPILING MY OWN DOVES BEAT FROM ALL THE TOUR RECORDINGS. GOOD JOB FOR THIS VIDEO THOUGH. . . YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PUT IN COUNTLESS HOURS TO REPRODUCE JUST THE BEAT ALONE .
could you help me and subscribe my new youtube channel? ua-cam.com/channels/XDQI2RbxsMpEybi6pc5erg.html
I like it. But what I would also like is for you to put own bit to the song. Could you put a bass line to the song and add your own groove to it. If not then it is just a clone or as we say in the UK, 'you're just parrot playing'.
Straight from Bobbie Z, It's a Linn Drum while sending his 'side stick' and low toms through the Pearl Syncussion.. Syncussion handled all the Chorus-Phaser, Slap Backs (low toms), and the reverb....Just saying....Now if someone could just tell what in the ENTIRE fuck is going one with Bobbie Z's Kick drum from 1999 to the Revolution. Shit's weird man.
Hey d2tk where can i download it's FLP ?
I do prefer the radio version of this song without the bassline. Not only did I think it made it sound better in a real cool and funky way, but I felt it forced you to really pay attention to the lyrics at the same time. Live, I actually prefer the bassline added back in towards the end of it. Allows the song to be really extended in a way it probably couldn't be naturally.
Make "Hypnotize" by Biggie Smalls please please please
Nice vids ! Could you pls remake "Diamonds and Pearls" ? Greetings!
Ben Al aka Ene, Thanks for the request, I get a lot of them, whats a good way to prioritize them?
@@dilliot2k i guess after order of apperance and your Personal taste :D Greetings from Germany ps: kick Donald Trump put of the white house xD
where's the hi-hat & crashes dude? those are distinct components of this beat. There are also two differently pitched toms involved not just one. This is a general remake of this classic beat. I am a connoisseur of Prince's music & a musician myself. It's good as far as it goes but check it & see.
Pretty NICE! Could you also do, "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "Housequake", and the KILLER CLASSIC, "777-9311"?
Please do let's go crazy by prince absolutely love you 😘💖💖💋💋
+dilliot2k Dillio!!! Can u remake Juicy Fruit by Mtume!!! Another cut that used the Linndrum LM1
